Destroyed Sherman Firefly Turret Bastogne #shorts 12
This old Belgium Sherman Firefly postwar turret can be found at the Nuts Castle Hotel at Bastogne.
After the service of the Firefly the vehicle was shipped to the Bastogne Barracks and the turret was placed at the Musee en Piconrue in Bastogne and was then placed here.
The turret probably came from the Sherman Firefly hull, that was used in the restoration of the Sherman tank at the Bastogne War Museum.

M16 Halftrack - Grand Bunker Museum - Normandy.
The M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage
also known as the M16 half-track
was an American
self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon built during WW II
It was equipped with four 50 caliber
M2 Browning machine guns in an M45 Quadmount
The chassis was derived from the T1E2 chassis
an earlier version of the M13
Based on an M3 half-track chassis
it replaced the M13 MGMC half-track after early 1944
This prototype was originally designated as the T61 MGMC
but after trials at Aberdeen it was accepted
as the M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage
A few corrections were made on a pilot vehicle in early 1943
before production started
2700 were produced by White Motor Company
from May 1943 to March 1944
with 568 M13 MGMCs
and 109 T10 half-tracks
being converted into M16s as well
As aircraft became more advanced
the usefulness of the M16 was reduced
The M16 saw service with U.S. forces
in the Italian Campaign
and Operation Overlord
and the Ardennes Offensive
In the Korean War it was relegated primarily
to the ground-support role
being put out of service in the U.S. Army in 1954
The M16 was also used by the
UK - Free French Forces - Nazi Germany
(Captured from the U.S.)
and in the Bundeswehr 1956 - 1962

Destroyed Sherman Turret at the Bunker Assenois Bastogne #shorts 11
This destroyed Sherman turret at the Bunker Assenois at Bastogne, the turret was one of a few placed at roads leading into Bastogne, these were place around Bastogne after the war, and all came from Sherman tanks found around Bastogne.
These Turrets would mark the frontlines during the Battle of the Bulge and would show how far
the Germans would have come.
Most of the turrets were removed over the years and relocated.
The Bunker Assenois is a pre-war Belgian Army bunker, that was the scene of the now famous breakthrough at Bastogne.
Here C Company, 37th Tank Battalion (4th Armored Division) joined elements of the 326th Airborne Engineers (101st Airborne Division).

M3A3 Stuart - Grand Bunker Museum - Normandy.
The M3 Light tank was developed after the American tank designers realized that the Light Tank M2 was becoming obsolete and set about improving it, the M2 was based upon the prototype T2 light tank built by Rock Island Arsenal, after it became clear that the US Army was ill-prepared as far as armored vehicles, training and tactics went. and in 1939 it became clear that a new model, which could be favorably compared to the European models, had to be studied for mass production.
The upgraded design, had thicker armor, and for the time the M3 was heavily armored for a Light Tank, it also had modified suspension and new gun recoil system and would be called the Light Tank M3. Production of the vehicle started in March 1941 and continued until October 1943.
The M3 was initially armed with a 37 mm M5 gun and five .30-06 Browning M1919A4 machine guns, on top of the turret in an M20 anti-aircraft mount, in a ball mount in right bow, and in the right and left hull sponsons. Later, the gun was replaced with the slightly longer M6, and the sponson machine guns were removed.
The M3A3 was a new design based on the experience made by the English in North Africa, The A3 would have a gyro-stabilizer, hydraulically controlled turret, and would have the side armament removed by a new frame made of welded steel sheets, with the Continental W-670 gasoline engine.
It would also get new access hatches on the top hull, and the radio equipment was moved to the rear of the turret.
It was supplied to British and other Commonwealth forces under lend-lease prior to the entry of the U.S. into the war, like the Free French Forces which used a lot of these tanks in the Battle of Normandy, Battle for Paris and in the Battle of The Bulge.
The A3 would only see a short production time and was discontinued for the M5 after 3,427 units build.

Look inside the Sherman M4A2 'Massaouah' - Normandy.
Production of the M4A2 tank began in June 1942 it would have had a welded hull and one piece cast nose, with a 75mm cannon.
And was manufactured by Fisher Tank Arsenal It would have had a GM 6046 twin diesel engine.
This version was produced with all the improvements the other types got, like the large hatch hull.
M4A2 was mostly supplied to other Allied countries under Lend-Lease.
The M4A2 would see limited combat in the US Army
and the French and British, would use them the most
and then the Russians and USMC in the Pacific.
The M4A2 would perform fairly welland would see service
after the war and would see many upgrades
Like the HVSS E8 tracks and, the 76mm M1 gun.
This Sherman tank named Massaouah belonged to the
1st Company of the 501st Combat Tank Regiment (RCC) of the 2nd DB.
It was knocked out in the town of Ecouche on August 15, 1944 .
On August 13, the tank takes position in the west of the city
to intercept retreating German troops.
At one point, the 'Massaouah' comes across a
German Panzer IV from the 116th Pantzer,
which is maneuvering into position to fire on the 'Massaouah'.
But it will never come to a shot, from 800 meters
the 'Massaouah' disables the Panzer.
On August 15, the 'Massaouah' and the M4A2 'Bir Hakeim' are still in the same location togheter with other tanks which are being serviced. Suddenly, hidden on the other side of the Orne in the woods, north-east of Ecouché,
German tanks open fire.
The first shot that comes in misses the tanks, but the second hits the 'Bir Hakeim'.
A third shell penetrates the 'Massaouah' where the ammunition is stored and catches fire.
Sergeant Major Mahaeo is thrown from the turret on impact, but is uninjured.
The gunner is wounded in the chest and the radio operator/gunner, Leonard, breaks his leg. Ancel, the driver is not injured.
Because of the damaged the tank was never recovered and would become a monument after the war.
Today you can still see the battle and fire damaged on the tank.

2x Renault FT - Walkaround - Saumur.
Originally Uploaded 25 aug. 2018.
The Renault FT, (later called the FT17 in WWII) was a French light tank that was among the most revolutionary and influential tank designs in history.
The FT was the first production tank to have its armament within a fully rotating turret.
The FT was developed in started in 1915, Renault would actually decline to develop the FT and Schneider company, would start on the development of the Schneider CA, which became the first French operational tank.
But in 1916 Renault started on the design of the FT, Louis Renault himself conceived the new tank's overall design and set its basic specifications.
The prototype did have some problems and only 84 were produced in 1917, some problems would never be solved and the FT would be plagued by radiator fan belt problems throughout the war.
These two FT tanks were restored in 2008, the FT now named Le Tigre was recovered by French Military Special Forces in Afghanistan and brought back to France in 2007, after the French discovered several FT Tanks in and around Kabul.
Several of these tanks went to America and one went to Poland.
Le Tigre originally carried a 37mm gun, but was restored with a machine-gun from the Ft next to it named La Victoire

Char B1 Wreck - Walkaround - MM Park La Wantzenau.
Originally uploaded on 18 Apr. 2018
History Video Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLYxgPA_GJc
The Char B1 was a French heavy
break-through vehicle,
originally conceived as a self-propelled gun
witha 75mm howitzer in the hull,
it was later redesigned
with a turret and a 47 mm gun,
to allow it to function as a Char de Bataille
(battle tank) for fighting enemy armour.
The Char B1 would be developed In January 1921 out
of the concept conceived by
General Jean Baptiste Eugène Estienne in 1919
On 6 April 1934, the first order was made
for seven tanks of a Char B1.
The Char B1 bis also has a APX turret with a
longer-barrelled (L/32) 47mm
SA 35 gun, to give the tank a real anti-tank capacity.
The Char B1 and Bis were expensive to build
andFrance simply lacked
the production capacity
to build a sufficient number of heavy tanks.
so there were only 405 produced.
Still the Char B1 Bis was the most powerful armed and
armoured tank of its day,
the type was very effective in direct confrontations
with German armour in 1940,
but slow speed and
high fuel consumption was a major disadvantage and
a made it a east target.
After the defeat of France, captured Char B1's
would be used by Germany, and they would be rebuild as
a flamethrowers or mechanized artillery.
This Char B1 BIS has no recorded history.
It was probably used by the Germans after the war
and ended up on a target range were
all the damaged you see today was done.
It was on display at Fort de Seclin in France,
together with the only B1 Char left in the world,
both were sent to MM Park Museum,
were there are now waiting for restoration.
(The B1 Char is not on display)

Sherman M4A4(75) DD Tank - Walkaround - Juno Beach.
The Sherman DD (duplex Drive) was a
Hobart’s Funnies tank developed after
the disastrous Dieppe Raid of August 19th, 1942.
These vehicles would allow crew to carry
out their objectives, but remain protected.
A prototype of a DD Valentine tank began trials
on 21 May 1942, although it subsequently sank.
In June 1942, permission was given by the Ministry
of Supply for the manufacture of 450 Valentine DDs.
It later became clear that the Sherman was more
suitable for use with a screen than the Valentine and
the DD screen was adapted for the Sherman by April 1943.
The DD canvas was attached to this boat shaped
metal platform welded to the tank hull.
One reason for this was that the Sherman could move in
the water with its gun
forward ready to fire as soon as land was reached.
The whole idea behind the Duplex Drive tanks was
the science of displacement.
If you can push out enough water, roughly 30 tonnes of water,
the same weight of the Sherman tank, then the tank will float.
Propellers were added at the back of the tank
to propel the tank to shore.
Two propeller drives were added at the rear of the tank
and two propellers were fixed onto the drive units.
The lower hull was sealed
and the canvas screen was attached to a new metal boat
shaped platform that went around the tanks hull.
Once the tank was on the beach the canvas screen
would be collapsed
and the tank would be able to engage enemy targets.
A system of compressed air bottles were used to inflate
the rubber tubes to give the canvas curtain rigidity.
Additional metal hinged arms and props were attached
to the tank hull
to assist keeping the canvas in the correct position
This Sherman DD has been used by the
Canadian 6th Armoured Regiment.
It would have been launched at 07:45,
3000 meters from the coast.
But this one and several DD tanks immediately sank to the bottom.
On this other DD tanks were unloaded at a shorter distance
(800 meters) from their Landingcraft Tank.
These tanks did what they came for, they fired on the German positions.
Despite the resistance,
the landing here went quite well. In the evening, 21,500 men
and 3,200 vehicles had landed on Juno Beach.
It was recovered in 1970 with several other tanks with a
recover lead by Leo Gariepy and placed here at
the memorial to the 1 st Hussars.
The tank also bears the insignias of the Canadian regiments
which took part in the D-Day landings and the Battle Normandy.

Sherman M4A2 Berry-au-Bac - Rainy Walkaround - Arromanches.
This Sherman is located on top of a Wn 43 bunker. on June 1944 this bunker was fitted with a 10.5cm gun, and until 1995 a Pak 40 could be seen in this bunker, until it was closed up.
This M4A2 Sherman is not the original Berry-au-Bac and has Serial Number 8887, and was built by Fisher in January, 1943.
It was used as a range wreck in the 60's, it was restored in the 70's and placed here as a monument.

SdKfz 2 Kettenkraftrad - Walkaround.
The Sd.Kfz.2 was designed and built
by the NSU Werke AG at Neckarsulm,
Germany. Patented in June 1939,
it was first used in the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.
Most Kettenkräder saw service on the Eastern Front,
where they were used to lay communication cables,
pull heavy loads and carry soldiers through
the deep Russian mud.
Later in the war, Kettenkräder were used
as runway tugs for aircraft
The Sd.Kfz.2 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 2) is a
half-track motorcycle with a single front wheel,
better known as the Kleines Kettenkraftrad HK 101
or Kettenkrad for short.
The Kettenkrad started its life as a light tractor
for airborne troops.
The vehicle was designed to be delivered
by Junkers Ju 52 aircraft, though not by parachute.
The vehicle had the advantage of being
the only gun tractor small enough
to fit inside the hold of the Ju 52,
and was the lightest mass-produced German military
vehicle to use the complex Schachtellaufwerk overlapped
and interleaved road wheels used on almost all
German military half-tracked vehicles of WWII.
Steering the Kettenkrad was accomplished
by turning the handlebars.
Up to a certain point, only the front wheel would steer the vehicle.
A motion of the handlebars beyond that point would
engage the track brakes to help make turns sharper.
It was also possible to run the vehicle
without the front wheel installed and this was recommended
in extreme off-road conditions where speed would be kept low.
Production of the vehicle was stopped in 1944,
at which time 8,345 had been built.
After the war, production resumed at NSU. Around 550 Ketten
were built for agricultural use, with production ending in 1948/49.

T-26 M1939 wreck - Walkaround - MM Park.
Originally uploaded on 14 jul. 2018.
History video here https://youtu.be/7ukXxn0uUvo
The T-26 tank was a Soviet light tank used during many
conflicts of the Interwar period and in WWII.
It was a development of the British Vickers 6-Ton tank
which was designed by the Vickers-Armstrongs
company in 1928–29.
This would be one of the most successful
tank designs of the 1930s until its light armour became
vulnerable to newer anti-tank guns.
The Soviets did not simply replicate the Vickers 6-Ton.
However, like its British counterpart,
the T-26 mod. 1931 had a twin-turreted configuration and
was designed to carry two machine guns,
mounting one in each turret.
A major difference was that the Soviet T-26 mod. 1
931 had higher turrets
than the British 6-Ton.
Beginning in 1937, there was an effort to equip many tanks
with a second machine gun in the rear of the turret
and an anti-aircraft machine gun on top of it,
as well as the addition of two searchlights above
the gun for night gunnery, a new VKU-3 command system,
and a TPU-3 intercom. Some tanks had a vertically
stabilised TOP-1 gun telescopic sight.
The T-26 was superior to anything in the
Spanish Civil War, they were also used in the
Second Sino-Japanese War, were they where less successful.
In the Winter War from December 1939 – March 1940.
the T-26 proved to be obsolete. In the beginning of WWII,
T-26s served mainly in separate light tank brigades
and in separate tank battalions of the rifle divisions.
most of the Red Army's vast numbers of tanks were suffering from
serious wear and tear. Poor quality roads, the vulnerabilities of track
design in the early 1930s and inadequate maintenance, recovery
and repair services all took their toll.
But the T-26 could still withstand most German tanks in 1941
but were inferior to the Panzer III and Panzer IV
participating in Operation Barbarossa in June 1941.
The T-26 would be produced until February 1941,
but would see action until August 1945.
This T-26 probably participated in the
Leningrad Blockade in 1941-42
and was knocked out or abandoned standing on
the frozen Ladoga lake,
after the ice started to melt the tank disappeared into the lake.
It was found again in 1998 on the bottom of the Ladoga lake,
near the city of Pitkyaranta.
It was supposed to be used in a monument to the RKKA,
but a replica took it's place and they sold this one,
to probably fund the build of the monument.
It was then sold again and ended up in the
MM Park, Museum in France.

Churchill Mk IV AVRE - Sword Beach - Walkaround.
The Churchill AVRE was a Hobart’s Funnies tank
developed after the disastrous Dieppe Raid of
August 19th, 1942.
These vehicles would allow crew to carry
out their objectives, but remain protected.
the Churchill entered service with the
British Armoured Forces in 1941.
Though it was slow and heavy,
the Churchill made a name for itself as being one of
the best cross-country tanks ever built
and could climb higher gradients or
cross harder obstacles
impassible to most other tanks then in service.
Development started on modifying
the Churchill in October 1942.
It was decided not only to
make the vehicle a kind of armored personnel carrier
but also give the Engineers the ability to project a
large high-explosive charge, giving the crew
the ability to destroy targets without having
to dismount the tank.
The Churchill normally needed a 5 man crew, commander,
gunner, loader/radio operator,
driver, co-driver/machine gunner.
The AVRE versions of the tank often
had a sixth crew member to manage
the additional engineering equipment.
It was armed with a 290mm Petard Spigot Mortar intended
for demolition work.
I was also fitted a hull mounted 7.29mm Besa Machine gun.
A disadvantage to the Petard, was the fact that the loader
would have to be exposed when reloading the mortar.
AVREs would also carry various other pieces of equipment
to assist their comrades on the battlefield.
Vehicles would have a wooden fascines, a small box girder bridge,
carpet layer and a mine plow.
This Churchill AVRE was restored in 1994
by the 15 Field Workshop.
(It was restored several times, in 2000 and 2010)
It was then left outside without any upkeep.
and because of this almost all external parts,
were restored with plastic parts.
like the mudflaps are restored with plastic mudflaps.
In 2014 it was restored again, with a terrible green
candy color.
Today its in a rusty state, because of no cleaning and
upkeep.
You can find this tank near the memorial
for the 41ste Royal Marine Commandos.

This Churchill Mk IV AVRE called Avenger
belonging to the British 26th Engineer Squadron was lost during
the landing on Juno Beach on 6 June 1944.
It slipped in a crater filled with water,
the crew bailed out 4 members of its 6 man crew were killed by
German machinegun and rifle fire.
Bill Hawkins, the demolitions NCO in the AVRE,
George Dunn, its driver survived.
A bridge element was placed on the roof of the tank, and gradually
the crater was filled and later covered with concrete.
The tank was found in November 1976, buried under
the sand and recovered.
It was then restored by the French army workshops in Caen and
put on display on a concrete plinth by the beach exit road,
on 15 October 1977.
During that time it was visited by RE veterans
including Bill Hawkins,and George Dunn.
When Bill Dunn died in 2014 in accordance
with his last wishes his ashes
were scattered next to his tank,
One Charlie on 8th November 2014.

Flammpanzer III Ausf M Driving around - Walkaround.
This Panzer III was made at the Muhlenbau-Industrie AG, Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, Germany. It was converted to a Flammepanzer at Wegmann & Co, Kassel,Nordehessen, Germany. This Flammepanzer has almost no history recorded, it was probably a prototype and found on a testing ground by the alies. It is unusual in having towing lugs welded to the front nose plate. Panzer III's from Ausf. J onwards dispensed with these in favour of ones formed from extensions of the hull side armour. It does, however, retain other Ausf. M features.
