Was the Ukrainian military’s last minute efforts to modernize enough to deter a Russian invasion? Will I ever learn to stop saying ‘the Ukraine’ and just say Ukraine? When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 the 2nd largest former territory they lost with 44 million people was the country of Ukraine. They voted overwhelmingly for independence.
This was a major blow to the Soviet Union’s chances of consolidating power. What’s crazy though is that all of those former Soviet military forces that were still left on Ukrainian soil were instantly inherited by Ukraine

Worst Ambush of the Afghanistan War
The True Story of how US Army Sgt. Giunta of the 173rd Airborne Infantry fought to survive one of the worst close ambushes in the Afghanistan War. He was the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War. His act of Bravery and Valor helped save many of his buddies lives that day during Rock Avalanche in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan.
These are the soldiers you might remember from Restrepo. He did a text book react to near ambush battle drill against the enemy.

Lebanon’s Army Needs to Chill Out
Is Lebanon's official military destined to play second fiddle to an armed militia group? In this video we analyze Lebanon's Armed Forces and infantry to see if their army can upgrade into the future.

Lebanon is a beautiful country with a population of 6.8 million citizens. The entire country is smaller than the US State of Connecticut but they play an outsized massive role in world geopolitics and military affairs, far more than say the state of Connecticut does. No disrespect to our nutmeg state. This is because Lebanon's geographic location is very strategically important: they’re right on the key economic trade route of the Mediterranean sea.
They share a land border with Syria to the North and east that stretches 375 kilometers. To the south they share a border with Israel covering 75 kilometers. Not exactly living next to your best friends but that's okay they’re going to make this living situation work.

How Camouflage Evolved
How did we go from bright red coats to digital patterned uniforms? Camouflaged uniforms are basically patterns scientifically and artistically designed to deceive your eye. It’s a jedi mind trick on your eyeballs to make them think there really is no danger in right front of you.
When military camouflage is done correctly it's capable of making even the least stealthy of soldiers practically invisible to our perceptions. But today we take this “craft” naye!...this artform for granted, we act like camo has been around forever when the fact is it’s still a relatively new battlefield development….for humans anyway. For centuries troops wore bright red colors into the fight, British Troops fought in bright red coats as recently as 1885.

South Korean Army's K-2 Rifle Needs to Chill Out
The K-2 ended up in the hands of a lot of bad guys, how did that happen?! In this video we dive into the South Korean Armies primary weapon the K-2 rifle. Lets find out what are the origins of this weapon why was it made? At the end of world war 2 Korea ended up being divided along the 38th parallel into two countries one being north Korea backed by the soviet union and the other is south Korea backed by Nato.

The cold war had begun and communist east squared off against the capitalist west. Choose your side wisely! In June of 1950 the North Koreans attacked South Korea beginning the Korean war. Which would drag the major superpowers in. Eventually the war ended not far from where it started with both north and south in ruins. Sometime after the war South Korea began to look for a new rifle for their military. At the time the South Koreans had a large supply of American made weapons like the M1 Garand and M2 Carbine.
These weapons however were starting to fall behind the times. However some Korean units had received the M16 after assisting America in the Vietnam war. In 1974 they got a license from Colt to produce the M16A1 but they found that the license was too much money and as industry grew throughout South Korea the military higher ups wanted to make weapons in house and be able to mass produce and store enough rifles in case of another large scale war. In Particular President Park Chung-Hee pushed hard for self-reliance and was one of the major voices behind the creation of a South Korean rifle. He is quoted by saying “If an independent country cannot protect itself with its military, it is not an independent country.” Can you blame them though?

Why Every Military Needs the Javelin Missile Launcher
This is an informative video about the FMG-148 Javelin top attack missile system. I'm your average infantryman Chris Cappy here to examine my top favorite Infrared Guided Anti-Tank Missile and 11th favorite Olympic sport, the Javelin. The FGM-148 Javelin for those of you who don’t know is America’s predominant man portable guided anti-tank weapon. It uses infrared tracking in order to guide itself to the target, making it not only easy to use, but highly effective and accurate against enemy armored threats.

So what kind of DARPA space magic makes this thing work? How is it used on a Modern Battlefield? What are the pros and cons of using it vs. something like an AT4 or Carl Gustav? And why didn’t my squad leader ever let me play with one?
Prototype development began for the Javelin launcher in 1989. But you’re probably thinking, when was the last time the US military faced off against a column of enemy tanks, what have all these soldiers been firing $100K dollar missiles at the sides of mountains? And that's not far from the case.

M109 Self Propelled Artillery Vehicle Tactics Explained
M109 is the American military's king of battle; it's a highly protected fast moving mobile 155mm yeet machine. But it’s been around since 1963 at this point and some military analysts believe it’s fast becoming obsolete So where did the self propelled M109 artillery vehicle come from and what are some of the tactics and procedures they’ve used over the years? Better yet can it lower its cannon down 45 degrees so it can be used like a tank with a massive cannon?

In World War I we first saw the rise of tank warfare. I can picture the military designer Walter Gordon Wilson sitting there in 1917 looking at the new armored tanks then looking at static cannon artillery pieces, then looking back at the tank. The gears in his head are slowly turning as he has an epiphany and puts two and two together.
The howitzer uses a main gun that fires a 155mm shell with a separate bagged charge. It is powered by a diesel engine and has a secondary M2 50 Cal machine gun. The M109 weighs 27 tons which is actually relatively light weight for an armored tank. They sacrifice some armor to keep it mobile since its not meant as a direct combat vehicle. It has a max rate of fire at 6 rounds per minute if you’re really gunning and a sustained realistic rate of fire of 3 rounds per minute.
This is a terrain denial weapon. It can be used to create dead zones in a battlespace. For instance instead of having to place a whole infantry company of over 100 soldiers to guard a border you can put a platoon of four M109 artillery pieces there. The self propelled artillery vehicles need even less soldiers than fixed artillery positions which require 9 soldiers.

Where did the need for this weapon originally come from? Well we can trace its roots all the way back to the year 1965 and the US Military was unhappy with the belt fed machines they were using at the time, the M60 and the M2 Browning. Both of these solutions technically required a crew of two in order to properly operate.
The military was acting like goldilocks here. They wanted a belt fed machine gun that was just right, not too big, not too small. They were looking for a middle child to add to the family and the M249 was just the problem child to fit that role. Just like a failing marriage, bringing in another child always solves the problem.

Why Russian Army switched to the AK-74 Primary Rifle
Its not as famous as the AK-47 but the AK-74 changed Russia's tactics and have a profound impact on firearms. When Russian soldiers stormed Crimea in 2014 everyone in the media said they were carrying AK47s which I’m sure probably triggered a lot of you out there because those were actually the much underappreciated AK74! Way to go media get it together out there. But make no mistake the rifle definitely continued the mythic-like status and tradition of its predecessor.

Hopefully, even if you’re familiar with the rifle you’ll learn something new here! If you like getting your defense information from a washed up former average infantryman, fire an Ak74 round at the like and subscribe button.
Since its creation in 1974 the Russian military has manufactured an outstanding 5 million AK74. Yes, its safe to say they love this weapon system. It was actually mandatory in the 1980s for young Russian in school to know how to fieldstrip and assemble one of these within a standard amount of time.

Future of Combat Helmets - Can it Stop Rifle Rounds?
Can the new Polymer Helmets actually stop rifle rounds? I want to know if the next generation combat helmets are a giant step forward or a big ol’ hype train to absolutely nowhere. For the first time ever my brain bucket claims to be able to protect me from incoming rifle rounds which is crazy if that’s true. So apparently there’s a giant misconception floating around out there that soldiers wear helmets to mainly protect against bullets when that has never been the case before.

The fact is helmets are mostly worn to prevent non combat related injuries that us lower enlisted are famous for. Since the inception of the ballistic helmet in the year 2000 they’ve only really been rated to stop small pistol calibers and tiny pieces of metal shrapnel from explosives, which statistically is actually the biggest threat to your head on the battlefield. And yes, It's true there are some isolated stories where the old ACH did successfully deflect a rifle round if the stars aligned just right and the angle of impact was perfect - but to be clear - stopping a direct hit was never in the cards, that is until now with the Integrated Head Protection System or IHPS for everyone who can’t resist a good military acronym.
So what changed in the past ten years that allowed for this major advancement where head gear can finally stop rifle calibers? Are the biggest advancements with this headgear possibly not even related to ballistic protection? And is this new tech still unrealistically expensive to be used in any meaningful way?
#HELMET #TECHNOLOGY #MILITARY
The development of the Future Assault Shell Technology or FAST helmet began In the year 2007 when the US Army’s Natick Soldier Center started researching ways to improve the old last generation ACH. This was born partly out of the fact that when the Army tracked all the casualty data from 2005 to 2009 in Iraq and Afghanistan and they discovered that 28% of injuries were to the head and neck. The army gave 8 million bucks to five different defense companies to try to create a new helmet all of which failed their initial prototype tests. According to the Navy, those initial tests were actually flawed though. If the military actually wanted to get those tests correct they should have just consulted Matt from Demolition ranch.

Why the Israeli Army Created the Galil Rifle
The IDF crossed the AK-47 / M-16 and a bottle opener to make the IMI Galil. But Why doesn't the Israeli Military use the 5.56mm Galil rifle anymore? The Israeli Defense Forces used the Galil as their primary combat rifle from 1972 - 2000. But can the new Galil ACE that was recently resurrected give this legendary weapon the comeback its always deserved?
Follow the Host:

The one I’m holding here is an older model Galil. It had a long 18 inch barrel. One thing that hasn’t changed since its creation is that it's always featured a full send mode with a high rate of fire at 650 rounds per minute. I was able to dump the entire clip before I could say shalom! That means hello. One of the distinguishing features that you’ll notice right away is its long curved magazines that its often seen with. I think this comes from the IDF’s dislike for their old FN FAL which could only carry 20 rounds. You’ll see a lot of design choices in the Galil are a direct consequence of the bad taste left in their mouth from the FAL.
This was one of the first military weapons adopted to fire the accurate small NATO 5.56mm from the reliable AK47 style action. The AR Galil has an impressive muzzle velocity of 950 meters per second and an extended max effective range of 500 meters. The IDF made this as a purpose built solution for close range desert fighting that didn’t require a whole lot of love and care in regards to maintenance.
You have to remember at the time of its development in the late 1960’s the Galil was a very novel idea. If you think about it, two years after it went into service the Soviet Army made a version of the AK that fired a smaller round that was very similar to the Galil. It also had a foldable stock just like the Galil. Coincidence, maybe! But I still think the Israelis were inspired by the Soviets AK who were then inspired by the Israelis Galil. Isn’t the circle of firearms life fascinating?

XM5 Raptor US Army’s Prototype
This is a very unusual full powered battle rifle with an impossibly short barrel. Find out how this US Army prototype M4 replacement is able to achieve a high muzzle velocity in this video. It fires the very high powered 68 x 51 mm cartridge from the shortest barrel configuration that I’ve ever seen for this kind of weapon. Normally this kind of large caliber is reserved for barrels longer than at least 13 inches so that it can have enough muzzle velocity to hit targets at 800 meters.

So what’s different here, why does the NGSW Raptor work where others have failed? If you tried making a high powered gun with a short barrel in the past it was impossible to reach the necessary muzzle velocity from an impossibly short 8 inch barrel. But Thanks to advances in modern ammo technology that’s no longer the case!
Firing the gun felt great because of its compact size this meant that the center of gravity was is in closer to my body so I was able to easily control it. The trigger pull felt very similar to the trigger on the M4 in a good way, it’s very responsive and doesn’t require too much pressure to engage.

The Truth About Russia’s AK-12 - is it over hyped?
The Regular Russian Infantry are getting issued a brand new primary weapon for the first time since 1974. The new features on the Next Generation AK-12 tells us a ton about how the Russian military is planning to adjust their fighting doctrine for their next potential conflict.
Vladimir Zlobin became the chief designer. Zlobin’s visionary prototype was a revolutionary departure from the AK series. On 6 September 2016 Sergey unveiled his version of the Ak-12 and what we ended up getting after all that media hype was actually just a pretty modest small improvement over the AK74. It weighed 7.7 lbs unloaded which is very slightly less than the AK-74 it had a slightly increased effective range to 440 meters and its felt recoil is slightly lower thanks to buttstock being inline with the new free floated barrel. This version had the really unusual strange 2 round burst mode so I guess we’re just arbitrarily picking our burst numbers now? What’s next, a 12 round burst? I give up.

I would argue the most important part of the AK-12 system is the 1P87 red dot holographic sight and the 1PN38 thermal sight that they are going to issue to all front line soldiers. This is a major departure in Russian doctrine and will provide the biggest performance boost to Russian infantry since the Ak74.

Can this NEW Attack Helicopter Defeat China's Anti Air?
The Bell 360 Invictus is part of the US Army Aviation's Future Vertical Lift program. They've been trying to replace the OH-58 Kiowa helicopter for years. The Commanche RAH-66 failed to deliver in 2004 due to its 20mm autocannon being inaccurate and its engine not having enough power. But the lessons learned there are being applied to the 360 Invictus. Will its new fly by wire low maintenance be enough to make it the infantry's go to "over the shoulder" close air support system? The newest Generation 3 version of Ratnik looks like a power ranger and claims to be able to stop a 50 BMG but before we unpack whether thats true or not we need to look at where this whole idea came from. Ratnik is important to study because this is one of the United States biggest potential threats and there might be something valuable we can learn and use ourselves from Russia's state of the art infantry modernization program.
#SOLDIER #ARMY #MILITARY
I don’t know about you but I’m noticing a pattern here. Every single major world power for the past decade has been working on a program similar to Ratnik. The US Forces have their Nett Warrior the French call it the Feline system and the British are working on the FIST program but no matter what odd name choice you go with they all have the same exact goal in common: connect the regular infantryman to all of the enhancements that the digital world has brought to other jobs. We’ve seen how recent technological advancements have completely changed the way pilots, artillery and tankers operate but at the same time all of those digital benefits seem to have eluded the infantry until now. Why is that? Is it because us ground pounders are complete idiots who can barely figure out how to send an email? Wait, don’t answer that.
The goal for Ratnik and indeed for all the worlds military forces right now is to figure out a way to get every soldier a GPS, a heads up augmented reality system, ballistic computer smart optics, new uniforms, and even some good old fashioned new hardware in the form of an upgraded primary weapon. Ratnik appears on the surface to check all the boxes. Another common denominator between the Ratnik program and the other military modernization programs around the world is they require the suite of systems to be easily adjusted based on a wide range of missions.
Throughout the modern era, Russia has a reputation for lagging behind its Western competitors in technical prowess, they’ve instead been relying on rugged simplicity, sheer numbers and a good old fashioned love for the motherland. Nostrovia. Not to mention they’ve had some help from their brutal Winters. From rifles to tanks, the history record of the Russia Military has proven time and time again that they know what they’re doing when it comes to designing effective military equipment based around the keep it simple stupid premise. But no one has ever accused them of being cutting edge. Ratnik may just prove the exception.

Is the Iron Man Ammo Pack Ready Yet?
The way this Iron Man ammo backpack works is the feed chute attaches to your extra rounds. This military technology has the purpose is to remove the need for an assistant gunner on the battlefield. AG’s traditionally have to deal with carrying some of the ammunition and helping their designated gunner with reloading while on patrol. So this could be used with either the M249 or M240 potentially freeing up as many as 8 separate soldiers per platoon from having to assist gunners.
Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cappyarmy/
Merchandise T shirts: https://cappysoutpost.myspreadshop.com/
The system was invented in 2011 when three soldiers from the Iowa Army National Guard submitted their idea for an ammo backpack concept. These soldiers were dealing with a problem where they didn’t have enough soldiers in their small team to carry the ammo. That’s when they thought of Jesse Ventura's ammo backpack in the movie predator. I hope those soldiers got a nice payout for helping to develop this idea and not just another AAM pinned on their chest and a handshake from some representatives in Washington DC.
That original soldier rigged up ammo can version of a prototype has since been retooled by the US army's Natick soldier research center. If you want to go digging you can find a whole bunch of arguments on the internet about whether they stole the idea from another company that was already doing something similar at the time. I’m not going into that.
