Has Nintendo FINALLY Designed New Drift Free Joy-Cons??
No one can deny the absolute success that Nintendo has had with the Nintendo Switch family of consoles. Whether we're talking about the original, Switch Lite, or the Switch OLED, Nintendo has made an absolute juggernaut of a console. One thing that has affected all versions of their hardware, however, has been Joy-Con drift. Rumors have been picking up about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, and in September 2023 the rumors got some more heat to the fire with a new patent filing for a new style controller was revealed. Let's take a look at the patent to see Has Nintendo FINALLY Designed New Drift Free Joy-Cons?
The issue with the Joy-Cons on the Switch is the fact that they utilize potentiometers for the joysticks. They are cheap, but they are are also cheap, if that makes sense. They quickly develop slop, they can break, or otherwise have issues with accuracy. One of the best solutions is to replace the potentiometers with a hall effect sensor. This utilizes a magnetic design to determine the position of the stick relative to the center and the extreme travel rates. Since this does not have a physical switch or wiper, like a potentiometer does, these are much less prone to drifting and wear.
The US Patent was filed on May 11th, 2023, and was made public in September of that same year. While it seems like the rumor mill for the successor to the Nintendo Switch has been active for a long time, I see you HD version of the Switch, Super Switch, and others, we're now seeing actual patents that directly point to new hardware in development. What do you think? Is this something that you might like to see Nintendo incorporate into the next-generation system? Let me know in the comments section.

This Is The Most Famous Video Game Artist You Don't Know You Know
At the Utah Retro Game Swap, I had a chance to spend a good amount of time with Paul Niemeyer, Tim Kitzrow, Daniel and Carlos Pesidia, and John Riggs. One point Tim brought up was that Paul was probably the most famous Video Game Artist nobody knows that they know.
Paul E. Niemeyer started his career in video game art by illustrating for industry legend P. Farris in the art department at Bally/Midway from 1982-1984. At Bally/Midway, Paul did art on games like Tapper, PacMan Plus, Super PacMan, Professor PacMan, TRON, Satan's Hollow, Spy Hunter, WACKO, and an endless, anonymous list of prototype games. In 1984, Paul went freelance and had a dual career as an designer/illustrator in the Chicago ad agencies, and a game art designer/illustrator for the video game community. Paul worked on a number of gaming projects as a freelancer, but none was more prestigious, or well known as Mortal Kombat. In 1992, Paul did the final illustrations of the Mortal Kombat logo and the artwork on the cabinet, control panels, and the header for MORTAL KOMBAT!
Through out the 1990's, Paul worked on promotional campaigns for movie properties like Little Mermaid, Jurassic Park II, Men in Black, Demolition Man, to name a few, as well as a myriad of ad campaigns for international companies and corporations.
In 2000, Paul helped start Eagle Games, where he was the creative director and designed & illustrated art for the games. In 2006, Paul opened a top 10 rated haunted attraction known as ABYSS Haunted House and ran it successfully until 2014. Since then, Paul designs and builds props for escape rooms, theme parks, haunted attractions and fests all over the world, as well as getting to meet all the fans of all those great games from so long ago!

We Just Got the Coolest Gift Ever | Utah Retro Game Swap
In September 2023 I was able to attend the Utah retro game swap, where I had both a booth and co-hosted a panel. unbeknownst to me, there was an incredible gift waiting for me in the booth when I got there. I can't believe what they did for me, and this is really the coolest gift ever.
about 15 to 20 mi outside of salt Lake City is the city of Layton Utah. for the last few years they have hosted a video game convention called the Utah Retro Game swap. I was very lucky to be invited to attend, along with my good friend John Riggs. I co-hosted a panel with Ryan from arcades Games, had a booth where I was able to sell a number of different items, and generally got to meet amazing people and have a great time.
When I got to my booth I Saw something really cool hanging on the wall behind the table. to be honest, I saw the one behind John's table first, and I thought it was something he brought himself. then I saw the one for me. they printed out a huge banner with my channel name and logo on it, a picture of me, QR code linking people to my page, and much more. this was not a cheap production and they did this for me without my knowing. this absolutely shows what a class act this group is, that they take care of their guests, and then go above and beyond.
I was quite touched when they did this and it really made my morning start off terrifically. I was very thankful for all of the joy and hospitality throughout the entire day, and this just kicked things off the right way.

Ranking My 3 Favorite Star Trek Shows For Star Trek Day
Happy Star Trek Day! September the 8th marks the anniversary when Star Trek the original series debuted. In recent years there have been celebrations to mark the occasion. I recently talked about my favorite and least favorite Starfleet ships so I figured in this episode we would discuss what my three favorite Star Trek shows are.
Number three:
Star Trek Enterprise
Man, this show seemed to be cursed from the start but I had such an amazing cast. Scott Bakula is the first ever captain of the Enterprise was absolutely amazing. I got the sense watching him that he truly was an explorer, but he was also a badass too. The rest of the cast all were terrific as well, Trip Tucker is one of the best engineers in all of Star Trek history. The Xindi arc definitely raises Enterprise in my rankings and I truly wish we could have gotten a full seven seasons out of it.
Number two:
Star Trek: The Next generation
I have never been a fan of Star Trek The originals series television shows, however I have always enjoyed the movies. That being said, when Star Trek The Next Generation premiered that truly became my Star Trek. I loved the fact that the ship could separate, it seemed to be better written and acted than the original series, and we got so many amazing characters introduced here. From Q, the Borg, the Marquis, The Cardasians, these all started on the Next Generation.
Number one:
Deep Space Nine
I have been extremely vocal with my love of Deep Space Nine, and I truly believe it is some of the best sci-fi, not just Star Trek, ever written. There was something about this show from the very beginning that, even though my initial reaction was that I didn't like it, I could not not watch. The older I've got the more I appreciate the nuance that has gone into DS9, from the father-son relationship between Ben and Jake, the pain of losing a spouse, and much more, Deep Space Nine is simply phenomenal.
What is your favorite Star Trek series? Let me know in the comment section, I would love to hear your opinions.

New NES, Famicom, and Super Famicom Games Added to Switch Online
Do you subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online Service or the Expansion Pack? If so, there are new games hitting the service for the NES, Famicom, Super NES and Super Famicom. Let's take a look at what we got!
Super Nintendo:
Kirby's Star Stacker
This never saw a release outside of Japan, but this Super Famicom original is now available on the Switch Online service. Similar to a Panel De Pon, Kirby has to match 3 characters to clear lines. If you are a fan of puzzle games you definitely want to check this out.
NES:
Joy Mech Fight
One of the last games released for the Famicom, Joy Mech Fight, or also called Joy Mecha Fight, was released after the Super Famicom had already been out for some time. A late release, it truly utilized the console's audio and visual capabilities to the fullest extent.
Downtown Nekketsu March: Super-Awesome Field Day!
Made by Technos Japan, this is the direct sequel to River City Rampage. Up to 4 players can play simultaneously in four different events using four different teams. The objective of the game is to win events by scoring the most amount of points. As a sequel to River City Ransom, the game shares a similar control scheme and gameplay and players are encouraged to use violence during the non-fighting events to score points.
Super Famicom
Super Ultra Baseball (Super Baseball Simulator 1.000)
I didn't realize the next 2 titles had been out for a little bit of time, but Super Ultra Baseball is one of the games I've actually been looking for physically! I know Jay from Square Pegs loves this series, and I'd like to spend more time with it myself.
Famicom
Babel no Tō (The Tower of Babel )
The game's goal is to solve the puzzle of each of the 64 levels of the ancient Tower of Babel and reach the top of the tower. The player controls the protagonist, Indy Borgnine, who must avoid enemies while rearranging L-shaped blocks in order to reach each level's exit.

1 Of The Best Blind Box Draws We've Ever Gotten | Video Games Monthly
In this episode, we unbox, evaluate, clean, and rate games that we purchased from Video Games Monthly for September of 2023.
What do you do if you don't have video game conventions, swap meets, flea markets, or retro video game stores in your area and you want to collect retro video games? Well, Video Games Monthly is here to deliver a solution right to your doorstep. With Video Games Monthly you can select games from a number of different systems, all the way back to the Intellivision and Atari 2600 forward to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The best thing about it, this is not a rental service, you get to keep the games.
There are four different tiers of service you can sign up for, three games for $34.99 a month, four games for $44.99 a month, five games for $54.99 a month, and 10 games for $74.99 a month. We subscribe to the $ 34.99-a-month plan, and with tax and shipping, it costs us about $45. My goal with each box is to at least break even, so if I'm spending $45 I want to get $45 worth of games. Some months they hit that mark, some months they just miss it, and other months they exceed it.
What we got:
Super Famicom:
Super Donkey Kong (Loose)
Value: $9
Nintendo Entertainment System
Airwolf (Loose)
Value: $8
Wii U
Gianna Sisters: Twisted Dreams Director's Cut (SEALED)
Value: $14
Nintendo Wii
Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (CIB)
Value:$8
Nintendo GameCube
Crash Nitro Kart (Game & Case)
Value: $12
Value for all games:
$51
What do we think:
In terms of the quality of games, this is probably one of the best boxes I've ever gotten from Video Games Monthly. There's something here that I would play from every game. While the dollar value isn't high on the individual games, these are not terrible games. Probably the only thing I would call a stinker would be Airwolf, and even that is a halfway decent game.
One of the issues I have had with Video Games Monthly over the years is the cleanliness of the games, whether that be the pins on cartridges or discs. The Airwolf game looked beautiful, and I was extremely happy with the condition of that. Super Donkey Kong definitely needed some extra TLC with all the gunk and junk that was on the pins. I know they indicate that they do a cursory cleaning of all their games before they ship them out, and quite honestly standard cleaning would not have gotten these pins cleaner than what they were out of the box. Thankfully I was able to use Bright Boy to get off the extra carbon buildup and dirt to prevent that from getting into my system.
The disc-based games were a mixed bag. Obviously, Gianna Sisters is sealed so that disc should not have any issues whatsoever. Both LEGO Star Wars and the Crash Nitro Kart game had signs of disk polishing fluid buildup around the center hole. I really wish they would do a better job of wiping that off the discs. Crash Nitro Kart also had a few leftover smudges and scratches on the face of the disc, which left me concerned about whether or not the game would actually play. Thankfully it did, but that initial concern was still real.
From a value standpoint, I'd rate this month's box a solid B, cleanliness I would put a C, and value I would put at a B-. In recent months they have increased their shipping charges, meaning they need to improve the quality of games included to make sure that people get value for what they're paying for.
What do you think of our Video Games Monthly box this month? Are there any of these games that you've played or that you like or dislike? Let me know in the comment section.

Can we Save This $2 Japanese Copy Of Kirby on the Game Boy?!?
Have you ever tried to get something on the cheap that you knew was broken but you thought you could fix? I've done it many times in the past when it comes to video games and game systems. Sometimes a game just needs to be cleaned. Sometimes a system needs a part replaced. Recently, I saw a Japanese copy of Kirby for the Game Boy for under $2. The listing said that it did not work, but I had confidence that I could get it working once again. Let's see if we can Save This $2 Japanese Copy Of Kirby on the Game Boy.
Once the game arrived, the first thing I did was just throw it in one of my systems. As expected, it did not work. From here I grabbed a 3.8 mm game bit and opened up the game itself. Unlike other game cartridges, Game Boy cartridges only have one side of pins to them. Upon inspection, these pins were pretty rough-looking. The first step was to take a 1Up Cleaning Card and isopropyl alcohol and try to clean the pins. One of the cool things is the fact that 1Up Card offers a mini-size card designed specifically for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. I gave it a thorough scrub and cleaning, put it in my system, and still nothing.
Now it was time to roll up my sleeves. The next step in the cleaning side of things was a solution called Bright Boy. This was something that was discovered back in the late 1990s when I was competing in the Tamiya Championship Series. The crew from the Northwest in Burien, Washington discovered Bright Boy would do a great job cleaning sealed endbell motors that we used as spec motors. I placed a few drops on the pins, gave it a scrub with a cotton swab, and got a lot of dirt off of it. After the Bright Boy, I once again used a 1Up Cleaning Card to clean the pins and remove any residual material left behind. I put the game in my system, and still nothing.
The last step was to break out the soldering iron. Our good friend John Riggs has done many an open cart surgery where he has reflowed the solder on the chips inside of a game. I grabbed some no-clean solder Flux, applied it to the pins on the chips, applied a little bit of solder to my soldering iron tip, and reflowed the solder on all of the pins. Once this was done, I took a little bit of isopropyl alcohol and cleaned up any flux residue left on the board, reassembled the cartridge, and put it in my system.
Upon flipping on the power switch, I saw the Nintendo logo. Then I heard the music. It had worked! I managed to resurrect this copy of Kirby for the Game Boy, and in the end, all it took me was about 15 minutes of labor and $2. This is such a fantastic game, even all these many years later.
Let me know if you have had similar success saving a game that no longer worked when you got it. Have you had other similar experiences? Share what games they were and how you got them working again in the comments!

We're Sorry Mario, Your Drink Doesn't Just Go On The Table!
If you have been a fan of the channel for any point in time you know that I have a definite passion for 3D printing. I love to design different things that are both useful and practical. As I prepare to attend the Utah Retro Game Swap for the first time, I want to bring something unique with me that I've never had at any show before. The more I thought about it the more I knew I wanted to do something for in the living room, and then it hit me. Coasters! Let's take a look at the coaster set that I have designed and will be selling on-site at the Utah Retro Game Swap, and will be on my 3D printer site soon.
Each set comes with nine total coasters and a coaster holder. Each coaster features a different character or item from the Super Mario series of games. There's Paper Mario, Paper Luigi, Paper Peach, the power-up mushroom, the invincibility star, question block, Yoshi, Mario silhouette, and the moon sprite. Each one of these is inset into the face of the coaster itself and really gives each piece its own personality.
One of the things I did with the set was I also printed the coasters using multiple colors. Peach is pink, Luigi and Yoshi are green, the 2 Marios are red, the question block, invincibility star, and Moon are all yellow, you get that sort of thing. I wanted something that not only had different shapes but different colors to represent what you were looking at.
To keep things neat and organized, I actually took and designed a tower that looks like it's right out of the Mushroom Kingdom. It holds all nine coasters beautifully within it, so that way you have a wonderful conversation piece that helps you keep everything neat and organized.
As I mentioned, I will have these for sale at the Utah Retro Game Swap on September 9th. I'm bringing four sets of these, and they will be available for sale on my website shortly after the show. Let me know what you think of these, is this something you would pick up? What do you think is a reasonable price?

3 Great Games You Need To Play On N64 Online On Nintendo Switch!
Through the Nintendo Switch Online Service and the Expansion Pack, more people than ever are able to go back and play some of the greatest video games of all time. Systems such as the Nintendo 64 have amazing libraries that some people never experienced. With that in mind, let's take a look at 3 great games you need to play on the N64 Online Service on the Nintendo Switch that isn't Mario 64 that I think you need to play.
Number 3
Mario Kart 64
This game isn't as pretty as it once was, but man, it's still as brutal as ever! With 4-player simultaneous gamer play, this is the game that settles scores and puts friendships to the test! With amazingly tight play control, including the introduction of the power sliding mechanism to boost your speed, I still love playing Mario Kart 64. Oh, and there's no Blue Shell.
Number 2
StarFox 64
Basically, a remaster of the original game for the N64, StarFox 64 still introduced a number of excellent new features. All range modes, the powered-up shot, voice actors, and more all debuted on StarFox 64. This was the first time we heard any of the voices of the StarFox squad, and they all became instant classics.
Number 1
Yoshi's Story
Ok, I know I harass Jay at @SquarePegs over his dislike of the theme of Yoshi's Story, I legit think this is a fantastic platformer. Yes, the title screen music can get to be a bit much, but the overall level design and game play is amazing. Yes, there was Yoshi's Island, but this to me is truly Yoshi's first stand-alone adventure. This is still a challenging game all these years later, I truly think this is a great 2.5D adventure and, in my opinion, a must play on the service.
What are your favorite games to play on the N64 Online Service on the Nintendo Switch? Sin & Punishment is another terrific game to consider, Goldeneye of course, and more. Let me know your favorites in the comments!

Most Anticipated Gaming Releases Coming in 2023! PlayStation | Nintendo | Evercade
We have had some amazing gaming releases in 2023, but there is still greatness yet to come. Nintendo, Sony, and others all have some excellent products that will be coming. Let's take a quick look at the 3 gaming releases that will ship in Q4 2023 that I can't wait for.
Number 3 -
Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation 5
The first Spider-Man game by Insomniac Games was nothing short of amazing when it premiered on the PS4, and the PS5 upgrade was even better. When the PS5 launched, there was also Spider-Man: Miles Morales which added to the overall mythos. When the proper sequel, Spider-Man 2 was announced, I was very excited. I love the fact that this is expanding the universe, we're going to get Venom, and that it's the first proper fully designed for the PS5 Spider-Man Game. I can't wait!
Number Two -
HyperMegaTech! Super Pocket Capcom Edition
This was a weird one when it was announced, but the more I looked into it the more I dug what I saw. This is basically a Game Boy-style handheld that not only plays the 12-included Capcom classics, but it's also compatible with the Evercade Library of cartridges! I've always wanted to get my hands on an Evercade Vs, but also wasn't sure if I would like the form factor. I think I will be much happier with this overall design and will actually play this more. You can currently pre-order it from Rondo Products, formerly Castlemania Games, and for only $60 this is a heck of a value.
Preorder Link: https://collabs.shop/4edojm
Number One-
Super Mario Wonder
I will probably buy 4 copies of this, one for me, one for my wife, one for my oldest daughter, and one for my youngest daughter, this way we can all play online together. Super Mario Bros: Wonder looks like so much fun, and it looks like such a natural progression from New Super Mario Bros. We're getting so many new power-ups and new abilities. I mean Mario gets to become an elephant! For someone with a daughter who loves Mario and elephants, that's a home run! I love the animation style so much, it feels so natural. And while I myself don't like the fact that the Yoshi's and Nabbit are invincible, it will make co-op playing with my 4-year-old a lot easier.

It's On Like Donkey Kong! 3 Donkey Kong Games You NEED to Play!
One of the first, and perhaps biggest opponents, ever for Mario has to be Donkey Kong. Miyamoto used "donkey" to convey "stubborn" in English; while "Kong" was simply to imply him being a "large ape", the name Donkey Kong was intended to convey "stubborn ape" to the American audience. When he suggested this name to Nintendo of America, people laughed, but the name stuck. Since the original Donkey Kong, DK has featured in many different games. Intitially he was of course the villain, but he eventually became the hero of his own adventures. That being said, if you were looking for 3 amazing Donkey Kong Games you need to play, it is on like Donkey Kong and we're going to recommend 3 of our favorites.
Donkey Kong
Game Boy
DK on the Game Boy was something pretty special. Donkey Kong begins with the four levels found in the original arcade game, in which Mario must reach the top of the level and save Pauline. After these four initial stages are completed, the usual arcade ending begins, but after a few notes of the "victory theme" Donkey Kong revives, grabs Pauline again, and takes off with her, with Mario giving chase. The player is then presented with 97 additional stages spanning nine worlds, for a total of 101 stages with the very last one a fight against a mutated, larger Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Nintendo Wii
Donkey Kong Country Returns was the first installment of the Donkey Kong Country series to not involve the original series developer Rare. Instead, it was Revolution Studios. Similar to our next game, in Donkey Kong Country Returns you get to play as DK and Diddy Kong through a number of levels, collecting KONG letters, bananas, and more. It has amazing graphics, gameplay, and music, and a MUST PLAY!
Donkey Kong Country
Super Nintendo
DKC is the one game that relaunched DK as not just a top Nintendo Character, but a hero. Developed towards the end of the SNES life cycle, it introduced so much newness to the system and gameplay. I love this game so much, one of the finest ever produced on any platform.
What's your favorite Donkey Kong game? Let me know in the comments!

Star Trek Starfleet Ship Designs I Like vs Don't Like
In addition to loving video games, I've been a Sci-Fi fan for almost all my life. I started watching Star Wars when I was very young, and enjoyed the Star Trek Movies. When Star Trek: The Next Generation came around I fell in love all over again. Based off some recent conversations on Twitter, I thought it would be fun to share some of the Star Trek Starfleet Ship Designs I like Vs ones I don't like.
NX-01 Enterprise
I think this is a beautifully classic design, and it shows the military background of Starfleet. I liked the fact that the ship felt like a submarine, much more simple and basic in its design. Compared to other ships we would see, this made a ton of sense for the era.
Excelsior Class
I don't know why but the Excelsior class has just never struck a cord with me. I don't think it did with the designers either as it was constantly being revised and changed. Look at the bridge from Wrath of Khan to Undiscovered Country, it's totally different. And don't get me started on the Enterprise-B.
Sovereign Class
Best known as the class of the Enterprise-E, this was one bad ship. It had the capability to take on AND DEFEAT the Borg, featured Quantum Torpedoes, and was the first time we ever saw the Captain's Yacht used. This is one of my favorite designs.
Galaxy Class
While I thought it was neat it returned in Season 3 of Picard, I was never the biggest fan of the Galaxy Class. I think it just felt off, it had way too much-wasted space overall and was not an efficient design.
Intrepid Class
The Voyager's design didn't make a lot of sense to me. The whole pivoting nacelles, what was up with that? I also think the bio-neural gel packs were a dumb idea, and what was up with the never-ending supply of shuttlecraft? But without the Intrepid class would the Sovereign class look as it does?
Nebula Class
The Next Gen version of the Miranda, I did like the Nebula Class. I thought this was a tough-looking ship and eliminated the "hotel in space" Design of the Galaxy Class. I would have liked it if this had been the Enterprise D!
Constitution Class
I don't care if it's the original, the Refit or the JJ Verse version, I don't have the love for the Constitution class others do. When you hear that the original design was upside down from what we came to know, it makes sense that this was not the best it could have been.
Defiant Class
What @LoreReloaded once christened the "USS Pimphand", the USS Defiant on DS9 is one of my favorite ship designs of any sci-fi anywhere. This ship was designed for one thing, to win wars, and with the best captain in all of Star Trek, Benjamin Sisko, she was key to winning the Dominion War. I love so much about this ship, and smile every time it is on screen.
What do you think about these rankings? Did your favorite make the cut? Let me know in the comments!

I'm Super Stoked For Super Mario Wonder on Switch
In June 2023, Nintendo held one of their Nintendo Direct broadcasts where they announced a new 2D Side Scrolling adventure for Mario and friends called Super Mario Wonder. Well, I have been super stoked for Super Mario Wonder on Switch since I heard the announcement, and in August 2023 Nintendo held another Direct to feed the hype train. All aboard as I cannot wait to play this game.
In addition to Super Mario Wonder, Nintendo also took the wraps off a new version of the Switch OLED model. Much like they did with the release of Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo is releasing a Super Mario Themed Switch OLED right before the game's release. This version is all red, including the dock and joycons. It also has a Mario hidden in the back and coins under the Switch Dock Door. These are neat Easter Eggs, but I would have liked to have a bit more pronounced theming, similar to what Tears of the Kingdom got.
What do you think of the game from what you've seen so far? Do you plan on picking it up? Also, what do you think of the Mario-themed Switch OLED? For me, Super Mario Bros Wonder just looks like it would be a whole lot of fun and I cannot wait to play it in October 2023.

Battletoads & Double Dragon Return to the Super Nintendo!
In this episode, we unbox and play test the Battletoads & Double Dragon special edition from rare, Arc systems, and retro bit designed for the Super Nintendo and Super Famicom.
Two of the greatest beat-em-ups to ever come out of the 1980s has to be Battletoads and Double Dragons. It features tight controls, high levels of difficulty (I see you turbo tunnel), and great replayability. It only made sense for the two games to have a mashup, first on the NES and later on the Super Nintendo. While the gameplay was virtually identical between the two, the Super Nintendo version featured enhanced audio, better graphics, larger characters, and much more. When Retro-bit announced that they were going to partner with Rare and Microsoft to bring not only the NES version back out in a limited release but the Super Nintendo version I got very excited. This is one of the few games they've announced that I actually had an original copy of, so I would be able to have more insight to compare this to the original than others I reviewed.
Out of the box, you get a beautiful custom game sleeve, a great-looking display box that features both the Battletoads and Double Dragon logos, a green cartridge with what seems to be embossed lettering on the logo, and a full-color manual. Unlike other releases this did not feature a certificate of authenticity or any other pack-ins, you're literally getting the game and the basic items a game would have come with back in the day.
One of the first things I wanted to test out was whether or not it would work with a Game Genie. This is something a lot of people ask me and I always forget that I have one to test! I never used one! So I will say, initially, everything worked wonderfully with the Game Genie. It recognized it, it started the game, I was able to enter codes. When I got to the second part of level 2 and my character exited the elevator, the character just disappeared. It was as if it got stuck behind the background but the foreground characters could still interact with it. It was really bizarre and I could not find a way to go ahead and bypass this.
I removed the Game Genie and just got to regular gameplay. I will say that if you had handed me a controller with this on screen and told me to play it I would not have been able to tell the difference between this and the original cartridge. The gameplay is as hard as ever, the characters look terrific, and the soundtrack just slaps. I definitely found the game much easier with the Game Genie attached and the make enemies weaker code, as there were a couple of times that I didn't even get to level 1-2!
Why it RoX:
- ROM is completely accurate from the original release
- Amazing graphics and audio
- Beautiful artwork on box and slipcover
- Full-color manual
- Reasonably priced
- Works with Game Genie... kinda
What could be improved:
- Not fully compatible with Game Genie
- No extra pack ends like other retro bit re-releases
- Game is still super hard
Should you buy one?
If you are a fan of Double Dragon and Battletoads then the Battletoads & Double Dragon on the Super Nintendo is pretty much a no-brainer. At this point, you needed to have pre-ordered it as it is a very limited release, but stores that carry Retro-bit products may have some open stock such as Rondo Products and Live Action Games in Champaign, Illinois. I do wish that they gave this a little bit more love as far as pack-ins, I can understand no game stand but no certificate of authenticity? That left me feeling a bit empty. But this is as accurate of a recreation as you are going to find and I absolutely loved how much I hated dying in this game.

How Do You Store Your Retro Video Game Disk & Cartridge Collection?!?
One of the biggest challenges of owning a physical video game collection is determining how you store it. I mean if you are like me and have hundreds of physical disks, cartridges, boxes, and more, how do you store your retro video game collection? While I do use 3D Printing as a partial solution, I have found some pretty awesome CD racks that work great with many different types of games.
For me, I have a ton of NES, SNES, Genesis, and Master System games, along with a fair amount of Virtual Boy, GameCube, and other games. I happened to find a local seller on our Facebook Marketplace who was selling 2 CD-style storage racks, and she only wanted $20 for the pair.
I initially was going to try to load this up with Nintendo Switch Games, but I had far too many cases for one rack, and I didn't want to put one system's games in multiple racks. Next, I tried SNES games, but quickly found the cases I have are far too tall for these stands. Finally, I decided to use one rack for DS and 3DS games, along with GameCube and Virtual Boy games, while the other rack I used for Genesis and 32x Games. I was also able to use the tops of both of the shelving units for different things, as the GameCube Rack has my WaveBird 3D Printed stand on it, and the Genesis stand has my Genesis Mini 1 Tower of Power on it.
What is great about this is they have now opened up storage on the shelving units I was using so that I can make more logical choices regarding what goes where. I've been collecting more and more original Xbox games, so I now have enough storage for that, along with PS5 and Switch titles. I do wish these were a tick wider, and they had more support as they like to tip backward. But for $20 I can't complain a lot.
How do you store your physical video game disks and cartridges? Do you actively display them? Share your storage solutions down in the comments sections!

3 Amazing NES Soundtracks On Games I Don't Actually Like
The Nintendo Entertainment System had amazing games, from Mario to Zelda, Metroid to Kirby. While there were many classics on the system, there were more than a few games that I loved the soundtrack but didn't care for the game itself. Let's take a look at 3 Amazing NES Soundtracks On Games I Don't Actually Like.
StarTropics
I've really tried to like this game, as I know many people love it. I just.. I can't. I don't like the movement of the characters, the RPG aspects, I just don't care for StarTropics (or the sequel for that matter). One thing that StarTropics really does well, however, is the music. I think the soundtrack is one of the best on the NES, and something I use regularly in videos.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
People have a love/hate relationship with Zelda 2, and I fall on the Hate side of it. I didn't care for the change in gameplay to a side scroller, or the change to the overworld map that made it more like a traditional RPG. But man, I love this soundtrack! If you have never had a chance to hear it I cannot recommend the Famicom Disk System audio enough, it sounds SO GOOD!
Anticipation
Originally developed by RARE, of course, Anticipation was going to have an awesome soundtrack. I did have this back when I was a kid, but I got is as either a bonus from Nintendo Power or as a call-in prize for Double Dare (I know I got Bugs Bunny's Birthday game this way). This knock-off of Trivial Pursuit looks and plays decently enough for what it is, but where it really shines is the soundtrack. A video board game doesn't deserve to sound as good as Anticipation sounds, but it's so good! It has a great mix of genres, from rock to do-wop and more. I think this is one of the least fun games I've ever played, but I can't deny how good the soundtrack is.
What are some games you don't enjoy but think has killer music? Share your favorites in the comments!

Star Wars Puppies | Bigger Brother Has the High Ground
I love Star Wars, at least the first 6 movies. One of the most frequently quoted lines is when Obi-Wan tells Anakin that it's over and that he has the high ground. Well, our new puppies have clearly been watching the first six movies, specifically Revenge of the Sith (the BEST opening of ANY Star Wars movie, fight me!). Recently. I've noticed that they have been recreating the end of Revenge of the Sith, and being black labs they both appear to be channeling part of the dark side.

The Best Custom Tabletop Switch Stand? RoTate from Retro Frog
In addition to creating 3D prints myself, I also back others who make cool things too. One such creator is Todd Gill from Retro Frog. In 2022 he announced a new stand for the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED, which captured my attention. It looked like it could become the best custom tabletop switch stand on the market. What I'm talking about here is the RoTate from Retro Frog.
In Todd's own words:
The Origins of RoTATE
A few months ago I was sitting out in my garage running a garage sale and found myself bored as the sale was going slow with a customer maybe every 15 or 20 minutes. I thought about bringing my Nintendo Switch out there with me and playing in between customers. However I largely play the Switch in console mode attached to a monitor in my office. I've personally found that, due to the large size and weight of the Switch, my hands would begin cramping up. Sure, the Switch has a kickstand built in, but, depending on which version you have, it ranges from not very useful to somewhat useful. So I gave up on playing the Switch while I was out there.
Later that night, I started thinking about it again. We like to travel and the idea of bringing the switch along is really appealing. So I set out to design a stand that could hold the Switch with the ability to adjust tilt AND rotation as many Nintendo Switch games including vertical or TATE orientation display options. Hence RoTATE was born.
Features:
- Adjust tilt in 18 degree increments.
- 360 degree rotation with notches at every 90 degrees to lock it into place
- Securely holds the Switch in place and the console can't slip out
- Fits both the original and OLED Switch models
- Removable base to allow easier transport. Pop it in your luggage for a trip!
- USB-C charging cable still easily plugs into the console
- Full access to all of the original Switch buttons and controls
- No slip rubber feet on bottom of RoTATE
- Play the Switch with any original or 3rd party controller that you want to. No longer will you be forced to use the Joycons
What do you think? Is this something you'd try?

Battletoads & Double Dragon (SNES) - Collector’s Edition
Worlds collide in Battletoads & Double Dragon in an officially-licensed limited collector’s cartridge re-release of the classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System brawler from Retro-Bit Publishing. When a massive rat ship comes crashing out of the moon with a massive weapon aimed at planet Earth, the ‘toadacious trio Battletoads answered the call. But the dreaded Dark Queen has brought on the shady Shadow Boss on board. This dastardly duo definitely means business so it was only fair for Rash, Zitz, and Pimple to team up with Billy and Jimmy Lee to bring the pain!
This 16-bit excursion will take the furious five across seven sinister stages to take on the likes of Abobo, Big Blag, Guido, Roper, Robo-Manus, and even the Colossus rat ship. You can either save the world on your own or get some couch co-op in 2-player mode. It’s time to get mean and green!
Gley Lancer - Collector’s Edition
In 2025, aliens have encroached into our solar system only to be met by the United Earth Federation Navy. There Was a RoboCop vs The Terminator Game for Sega Master System?!?
What did Bob Ross call them, happy little accidents? Well, I had a happy little accident recently when I was out game hunting when I discovered a game I literally had no idea existed on a specific platform. As a child of the 1980s I loved the Terminator and Robocop movies, so you can imagine my shock when I discovered that there was a Robocop vs the Terminator Game for, of all things, the Sega Master System! Who knew?!?
The story is pretty simple. In the near future, the worlds of Robocop and The Terminator merge into a single reality. You, as Robocop, must save mankind by destroying the Skynet supercomputer in the possible future in which machines rule the earth and Skynet is supreme.
The story is set a few years after RoboCop is created. SAC-NORAD contracts Cyberdyne Systems to build Skynet, which is modeled after RoboCop's neural networks. When activated, Skynet becomes self-aware and launches a war against mankind. In the future, Skynet sends several Terminators back to the past to cripple the Resistance.
RoboCop destroys one of the Terminators and travels to the headquarters of Omni Consumer Products (OCP), the technology firm that created him. After defeating an ED-209 unit reprogrammed by the Terminators, RoboCop plugs himself into the OCP computer system, which allows him to reassemble himself in the future. Now RoboCop must fight through the Terminator outposts and make his way to Skynet to destroy it.
I cannot wait to spend time with this title as the description looks and sounds amazing. I've not played the 16-bit versions on the SNES or Sega Genesis so I am going in completely blind. My expectations are pretty high, as I know the comic books which are the source materials for this game are fairly highly regarded.
Have you ever seen a game out in the wild you didn't know existed? What title was that? Let me know by leaving a comment!

Electron Shepherd Budget-Friendly OG Xbox Xbox2HDMI Adapter!
In this episode, we test out the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI dongle, which promises to provide clean, crisp, digital HDMI output from an unmodified original Xbox.
Features:
Size: 58mm x 33mm x 12.6mm
Supply Voltage: 5V
Video Input: Component
Audio Input: Digital Surround Sound
Video Output: HDMI
Latency: LAG FREE!!
The original Xbox was the only one in the series that did not include an HDMI output. They did provide quality component video cables, as did Monster Cable, but for today's modern flat panel TVs, many people don't want to go through that hassle. There are companies that provide Xbox to HDMI cables, but generally speaking those tap into either the composite or S-Video output, and they don't look very good. In early 2023 we reviewed the Xedusa, designed to plug into your original Xbox and give you component, composite, optical audio output, and HDMI video output. It's a great device, but for some people, it might be overkill. Enter in the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI dongle, a budget-friendly XBox2HDMI adapter that is under $50 and may be the ultimate solution for those looking for a simple yet good HDMI output for the Xbox.
The overall design of the Xbox2HDMI is very simple. You have a metal connector that goes into the multi-output on the back of your Xbox, a shroud around a PCB, and an HDMI output. The whole thing is only a few inches long, but much like the Xedusa it relies on the connector to provide strength and support for the cable. I'm going to look to 3D print something that will provide support down the road. The connector going into the system is fairly robust, and good quality, and the HDMI connector seems to be as well. I did feel like the HDMI connector was a little bit on the tight side, but I'd rather have that than have it flop around loose where could provide an intermittent connection.
I've been playing more and more of my Xbox lately, mostly thanks to the fact that I can now use other controllers with it. I started out by playing Star Wars Republic Commando, and I thought that the initial splash screen looked kind of grainy. When I got into the gameplay, however, I thought it looked really good. It very much reminded me of the visuals that I got out of like the Retro-bit Prism HDMI adapter or the Carby from Insurrection Industries for the GameCube. It wasn't doing any upscaling, it was giving me just a clean crisp 720p signal out of the system which is exactly what I wanted. It CAN technically output 1080i, but I feel 720p looks a lot better.
I moved on and played a number of games through this, one of my favorites is IndyCar Racing. I know, I know, in 50 ft make a left turn. At 50 more feet make another left-hand turn. While the character models and the cars were a bit boxy-looking, I thought everything looked super sharp. Best of all I didn't feel any lag or latency as I played.
I continued on and played several more games, Conkers Live and Reloaded, Doom 3, Ninja Gaiden, and they all had very similar performances. The color levels were accurate, the blacks were not overly soft or blown out, and I didn't notice any extreme jaggedness around anything, this is a pretty good solution in my opinion.
Why it RoX:
- Under $50
- Gives you a direct HDMI connection
- Very good performance
- Continually being updated
What could be improved:
- No external support for the weight of the dongle
- My HDMI port was a bit tight
- Still takes a while to ship
- Does not provide any upscaling
Should you buy one?
If your goal is to simply get a good, clean HDMI signal out of an original Xbox to connect to your modern TV I don't know that you're going to find a much better value than the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI adapter. It's quite good in what it does and how it does it. When I originally ordered mine it was under $35, but it is since he had a price increase to push it north of $40. That's still about $20 less than the Xedusa, but the Xedusa does offer additional features. You can connect it to a RetroTink 2x Multiformat or 5x and get ine multiplication out of it, which the Xbox2HDMI does not do. The only way you can get any kind of line multiplication is by plugging it into something such as the upcoming RetroTink 4K, but if you're going to do that you'd be better off buying a 5X and a Xedusa. For the average consumer, however, I can't think of a much better way to connect your OG Xbox to a modern flat-panel television, it just works that well.

We Need To Discuss Who The PlayStation Portal is For!
In the first half of 2023, Sony announced Project Q. Designed to be a handheld tablet to play PlayStation 5 games on, we were definitely left with more questions than answers. Towards the end of August 2023, we got several answers including the official name and pricing information. Let's take a closer look at whether the PlayStation Portal is a Killer Accessory for the PS5 or whether it'll be dead on arrival. We Need To Discuss Who The PlayStation Portal is For because I honestly do not understand this thing.
Name:
The official name of the device is the PlayStation Portal, and I have to admit when I saw this trending I thought there was a remake of the Portal games coming to the PlayStation. I think it's very strange that yet again Sony will have something that can be called the PSP, PlayStation Portable versus PlayStation Portal. I don't love the name but I don't entirely hate it either.
Display:
This was information already provided but the PlayStation portal uses an 8-in LCD display with a 1080p 60 Hz refresh rate. Quite honestly, the display is slightly better than what Nintendo used for the Switch OLED as that was only 720P, but at this size the resolution difference is minimal.
Usage:
The PlayStation portal is designed to be used while connected to your PlayStation 5 via Wi-Fi remote play. It can play any disc game remotely along with any digital games that you have purchased. What it cannot do is play cloud-based games through PlayStation Plus, which is a definite minus. I'm sure it has to do with the throughput of the connection, streaming games down on top of streaming them to a handheld device. We do know you can be tethered to a cell phone or other Wi-Fi hotspot to be able to play remotely.
Bluetooth audio:
Sony continues its infuriating trend of equipping their devices with Bluetooth yet not making them Bluetooth compatible. You cannot use just any old set of Bluetooth headphones with the PlayStation portal, you have to use their PlayStation headphones. This is infuriating and when people talk about anti-consumer moves this is one of the most egregious offenses. Even Nintendo allows you to use any Bluetooth earphone with the switch.
Pricing:
There are a lot of people speculating about what the price could be, some are thinking it could be north of $300, something it would be around $150. Much like the name, the pricing is okay but not great at $199 USD.
What we don't know:
There are still a lot of questions that we have about the PlayStation Portal. Are the analog sticks Hall effect sensors or are they standard potentiometers? Are they user-replaceable? What's the battery size and what is its expected play time? And finally, what's the exact release date? We still don't know when it is coming out.
At $200 I'm somewhat intrigued by the PlayStation portal, but I'm not motivated to buy one. It's an interesting idea but has far too many limitations for me to really have much interest in it. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments.

Atari Is Updating the Atari 2600 for Modern Gamers with HDMI!
When it comes to how I got into video gaming, after playing in the arcades I cut my gaming teeth on the Atari 2600. Playing games like Night Driver, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Adventure were part of my formative years. While I played a lot of Atari 2600 Games, I've never had the love for that system that others have. Well, Atari is hoping to reach out to the masses again with the 2600, but expand it to include the 7800, a system I never played. Atari Is Updating the Atari 2600 for Modern Gamers, and this is the Atari 2600+ coming in November 2023.
From Atari:
Enjoy your favorite Atari 2600 and 7800 games on one system! Not only does the Atari 2600+ pull double cartridge duty, it also features HDMI and widescreen mode for easy connectivity to modern TVs.
Jump right in with the included CX40+ Joystick and a 10-in-1 game cartridge that features some of Atari’s most famous games like Adventure®, Missile Command®, and Yars' Revenge®.
Features
The Atari 2600+ is an updated version of the iconic Atari 2600 and has been enhanced in the following ways:
- Plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges
- HDMI output makes it easy to connect
- Widescreen mode
- Enlarged cartridge socket reduces sticking
- Atari logo lights up when being played
Ready to Play
Comes with a 10-in-1 cartridge so you can dive into your favorite titles right away.
2 Systems in 1
Plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges.
HDMI-Ready
Easily connects via HDMI so you can enjoy every last pixel.
I have pre-ordered one for myself, and at $130 It was a pretty easy decision to make. I will be curious to see how this compares to the Hyperkin Retro77, a system that greatly disappointed me. Much like that system, the Atari 2600+ uses emulation technology to play game cartridges. The 2600+ is powered by a Rockchip 3128 SOC, which means the odds are that it will dump the ROM before playing.
What do you think of the Atari 2600+? Is this something you would be interested in? Let us know in the comments!

Hyperkin PlayStation-Style symmetrical Stick Xbox Controller!
In this episode, we discuss updates from Hyperkin regarding their Competitor Controller coming to the Xbox, featuring a PlayStation-Style symmetrical stick layout.
WAY back at E3 in 2019, Hyperkin teased a new controller for the Xbox One S and X at the time called the Competitor. Featuring a design closer to what fans of PlayStation Controllers might prefer, this was something I was immediately interested in and reached out to my Hyperkin contacts to learn more about. It has been almost 4 years since that initial tease, and now Hyperkin has more information to share.
From Hyperkin's official press release:
Hyperkin's the Competitor Controller Will Now Include Hall Effect Sticks and Hall Effect Impulse Triggers
August 23, 2023 (Los Angeles, Calif.) Hyperkin has announced that the previously announced Competitor - an officially Xbox-licensed wired controller for Xbox Series X|S/ Xbox One / Windows 10|11 – will now include hall effect analog sticks and hall effect impulse triggers. The Competitor also has a symmetrical, side-by-side analog stick layout. Xbox controllers traditionally have an asymmetrical offset layout. The Competitor will be available for a first look/hands-on at Gamescom 2023 by appointment only.
What is Hall Effect Technology?
The biggest update to the controller is the inclusion of hall effect analog sticks and hall effect impulse triggers. Hall effect sensors use magnets in their design to detect movement, meaning high-precision gameplay without risk of deterioration. Say goodbye to stick drift and trigger wear!
Hall Effect Sticks: Ensures quick, accurate, and responsive control, giving you a competitive edge in every game.
Hall Effect Impulse Triggers: Experience realistic feedback as you feel every shot, explosion, and impact, with hall effect precision.
Additional Features:
• Modern amenities for Xbox Series X|S: Menu, View and Share buttons
• Vibration feedback for realistic experiences
• 3.5 mm headset jack
• Detachable Type-C cable
Details regarding the launch date and MSRP will be revealed at a later date.
My initial thoughts:
First and foremost, I am THRILLED to see that this controller has not been forgotten about. The was teased about 7 months before the pandemic, so things definitely were affected there. The fact that this is now getting an update makes me very happy.
I'll say that the mold for the Contender does appear to be slightly updated. The grips remind me more now of the Switch Pro Controller than previously. I am also glad to see that, much like their Xenon Controller, this is including a detachable USB-C and not a Micro USB cable. That is something that has likely been changed due to the delay, as in 2019 the odds of Micro USB would be fairly high.
While I am glad to see USB-C, I'm a bit bummed that this is a wired controller. In 2023 I don't want to be tied down with a wired cable between me and my system, especially with a preschooler, a dog, cat, and 2 puppies running around. I want to cut the cord. I am not sure if that is not something that can be done due to licensing agreements with Microsoft, however.
That is also an important feature to note. The Competitor controller IS actually officially licensed by Microsoft for use on the Xbox Series S, Series X, One X, One S, and Windows 10/11 machines.
Having used a number of controllers in recent months with Hall Effect Sensors I am a big fan myself. They are so precise and smooth, plus you just don't have the wear and tear concerns like with traditional Potentiometer controllers. I don't have any information regarding the price, but I would assume that $40-to-$60 would be about where these will land. ETA is still to be determined, but I for one cannot wait to get my hands on one of these!
Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments! Do you prefer the symmetrical or asymmetrical stick layout on your controllers? Do you plan on ordering one of these? Did you remember this being teased?
