Can You Legally Download Games? We Asked A Copyright Lawyer
In this episode, we sit down with a trademark and copyright attorney to discuss the legality of making your own video game backups from games you physically own, downloading games from the internet, and enforcement of copyright and trademark dependent on whether or not the original company that produced said content still exists, and more.
One position I often get criticized for is my take on emulation, piracy, and downloading video games from the internet.
"What harm is it?"
"Who's getting hurt?"
"The publisher already made their money so why does it matter?"
These are all arguments I have heard over the years. I personally do not download and play games off of the internet, I don't believe that it is right, I believe it is a violation of trademark and copyright, and I have a moral issue with stealing content that I did not pay for. These are my personal opinions and beliefs, and how I conduct myself. Others, however, have taken issue with this, assuming that I am gatekeeping or otherwise trying to prevent them from enjoying reliving their childhood. Nothing could be further from the truth, but I wanted to get some legal expertise involved in this. As such, we actually interviewed a legal expert to ask some questions too.
Myth: If a company is no longer in business the copyright is no longer enforceable and I can download that content.
Truth: Whether a company that produced a game or not is still in business is irrelevant to the enforcement of legal copyright enforcement. As David mentioned, someone probably purchased the assets of that company out of business or filed for bankruptcy. For example, simply because Hudson no longer exists does not mean no one owns their copyrights anymore. On the contrary, Konami bought them, which is why Konami was the one who released the TurboGrafx 16 Mini.
Myth: The company isn't producing the game I want to play any longer so it's perfectly okay to download the content.
Truth: whether or not a copyright holder decides to cease production and sale of a copyrighted work has no factor regarding the legality or the enforcement of the copyright. Simply because someone ceases the distribution of copyrighted works does not make the copyright invalid.
Myth: retro games are too expensive now, so it's okay to just pirate them off the internet.
Truth: Things are more expensive today, nothing you can do about that. Just because something is expensive does not make it legal to download the software and use it as you see fit.
Myth: I used to own a copy of Super Mario Brothers, so I can download a copy of the ROM and play it and be okay
Truth: No, you can't. If you make a backup of a game, you have to actually make a backup from the game you physically have possession of. You also must maintain ownership and possession of the original copy that you backed up. For example, if you had a ROM dumper and dump the ROM of every Nintendo game that you own, and then sold those games, technically you are violating copyright law.
Myth: The publishers already got their money, So my downloading games from the internet doesn't hurt anybody.
Truth: You potentially hurt people now and in the future. We've seen in recent generations of gaming that manufacturers have gone back and re-released collections of older games on new platforms. Some individuals own and run video game resale stores that buy, sell, and trade retro video games. You are hurting those people and those businesses.
Myth: You're just a gatekeeper and don't want me to play my games
Truth: I don't care how you play your games. I don't care how you get your games. I'm explaining why I do things FOR ME. You can do whatever you want. You can choose to ignore copyright law, or you can choose to follow copyright law. I don't care, it doesn't affect me. And my opinions and moral belief should have no effect on you.
Myth: The online store that sold the digital version of the game no longer sells the game, so I can just download it.
Truth: If the method of distribution that you purchased your games through previously no longer exists, you have no legal right to download content from any other source. You may not like it, and this is one of the reasons why I prefer owning physical versions of games versus digital because this type of thing can happen. Look at the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS eShops, they are all done selling new content. On the Wii U and the 3DS at least you can still re-download things for a while, but you can't even do that with the Wii at this point.
I hope this explains to some people why I don't download games, also how I do support making legal backups of your video game library. In the end, you do what you feel is right by you, I'm going to do what I feel is right by me, and I'm just going to go have fun and play the games that I physically own.

Presenting Video Game Summit Game Con Custom 3D Printed Logo Signs
One of the things that I love doing is attending different video game conventions. Not only do I love going to conventions but I also love being able to help out the organizers or otherwise support the events. I've wanted to get to Video Games Summit for several years, and in 2023 I finally had the opportunity to do so. Not only was I able to attend, but I also was able to present them with something unique and special that I designed and created for them.
As I've shared for some time, I have actually been designing and printing LED light boxes with my 3D printers. I was able to utilize the video game Summit logo, edit one of the existing templates that I have for my 3D printed light boxes, and design a few different light boxes for them to have on display at different events. This is one of those things that was also made possible by the fact that I just recently bought a bamboo Labs P1P printer, which allows me to go ahead and print multi colors at the same time and not have to manually change the colors.
I was able to go ahead and attend the event thanks to Todd Friedman, the organizer of the event. I've known Todd for quite some time, and run into him at several different conventions from Midwest Gaming Classic, Portland Retro Gaming Expo, and most recently the Illinois Game Con. Todd does so very much for the modern and retro Video Gaming Community, not only with this event but also just in general that I wanted to make sure that he knew how much the community appreciated all of his efforts. The light box itself took me about 2 hours to design and get rolling, and then it took about 4 hours total per box to print.
If you host or are a participant in a modern retro video game convention, make sure you reach out to me. I would love to go ahead and design something with your logo that you can go ahead and display for the people who come and visit your event. I would also like to go ahead and be able to design things that you can give out to people who sign up for VIP or Early Access as well.
Thanks again to Todd and everybody with video games Summit for running a super fun event, I cannot wait to attend again next year.

Our Biggest Video Game Hunting Win Ever? 200+ Games! NES | XBOX | MORE
To be able to play games, you need to find them. Sometimes that's easier said than done, especially if you have great stores in your area, swap meets, or conventions. Well, my area is normally pretty dry when it comes to finding games at rummage sales, but my wife sent me a link this morning to a local rummage sale SPECIFICALLY calling out nerds and video game fans. Ok, this had my attention. It happened to be just about 5 minutes from the office I work at, so I decided to check it out over my lunch hour.
And it didn't start until 3. Rats. Ok, point taken, I needed to come back after work.
When I got there, I was greeted with a "Gary Katzer!". This was a shock as, while I have a decent following I don't get recognized in the wild. Then I realized who it was, a former co-worker who I hadn't seen in about 18-months! This was his rummage, with is wife, and they had boxes and totes of games for sale. Now, I knew his stuff would be decent, but there was a ton of filler here. Filler isn't terrible, most games were in the $6-$10 range and he was only asking $3 for most. He also had some Xboxes, a Wii U without a Gamepad, and several Wiis in various states of disassembly and need of repair. A few games caught my eye, Sonic 2 for the Sega Game Gear, TMNT for the Wii, and Crimson Skies for the original Xbox. I was going to shoot him an offer for just these, but then I saw he was selling an NES as well. OK, the plot thickened.
The other thing in the back of my mind was the fact that I am going to be selling at 2 conventions the next 2 weekends. If I could get a good enough price could I get just one of the totes of games? I asked what his best price would be for 1 tote and the NES, and he shot me a really good price so I took it. We shook hands, I paid him and I was on my way. Until..
There was still 1 tote of games, what would it take to clear him out? So I stopped as I was leaving the driveway, turned around and asked what his best number on the rest was. I happened to have a box for an N64 in my car he had seen and taken a liking too, and he wound up trading me the box for the rest of the games!
This was a tremendous haul and I am thankful for the awesome deal, as this was one of it not Our Biggest Video Game Hunting Win Ever.

Use Nintendo 64 Switch Online Controller on an Actual N64!
In this episode, we unbox and check out the Retro Time adapter dongle from 8BitMods for the Nintendo 64 which promises to allow you to use practically any Bluetooth controller on the N64.
People have a love-hate relationship with the controller for the N64. Some people love to hate it, and others hate to love it. The trident design is definitely controversial, but it makes some logical sense. Some. Compared to modern controller aesthetics, however, better options have been released since then. The team at 8BitMods has come out with a dongle that will allow you to use Bluetooth controllers with retro consoles, such as the GameCube and now the Nintendo 64. We picked up one of their Retro Time and 64 adapters from Castlemania games and put it through its paces.
The overall design is pretty simple. It's essentially just a Bluetooth dongle with a single button and an LED on it. You plug it into a controller port, and the LED starts to flash. After a few seconds, it goes into auto-pairing mode, and then you can pair your controller to it. It also has a browser interface or you can do things such as update firmware and customized button mappings if you so wish.
The fitment of the dongle into our Nintendo 64 was a little bit on the tight side, but not a death grip. I would call it secure. I was able to install and remove it from a few different N64s, both US and Japanese, and it worked perfectly with all of them.
I started out my testing with the Retro Fighters Duelist controller, designed for the Nintendo Switch to give you somewhat of a GameCube controller layout. It paired up beautifully and worked perfectly. I was able to fly my Arwing around Corneria City without any issues and blast the bad guys. Even Falcon appreciated what I was able to accomplish.
Next up, I paired a Sony DualShock 4 controller to it and decided to play some GoldenEye. Man, I wish we had modern controllers back during GoldenEye because it would have been so much better. I also wish we had more button mapping options! Once again, everything worked as it should, even though I could not get it to function like a traditional first-person shooter would on a modern platform. All the button presses registered exactly as they should, and the analog sticks worked as well. Two for two.
My next test was with a favorite game of Jay from Square Pegs, Yoshi's story. But this time I wanted to throw something at it that I was really curious to see if it would work, the Nintendo Switch N64 online controller. I did not know if this was compatible with all Bluetooth devices or if Nintendo locked it down to simply work with the Switch. I am pleased to say it paired up wonderfully and I was able to quickly and easily get playing. Just like the previous games, it worked exactly as intended, although I will say I still have no love for the Switch Online N64 controller. But this works perfectly, for those looking for a truly authentic 100% wireless solution for their m64, this is it!
Why it RoX:
- Only $30
- Pairs beautifully with Bluetooth controllers
- Rumble works with compatible controllers
- Upgradable firmware
- Did I mention it's only 30 bucks?
What could be improved?
- No memory card integrated
- More colors would be great
Should you buy one?
If you are looking for a plug-and-play wireless controller solution for your Nintendo 64, look no further. This is a practically perfect device, and I don't say that lightly. It just works and does exactly what you would want it to. I did not notice any lag or latency introduced while playing this, and I was able to pair it with every controller I tried. This is a truly terrific option and 8-bit mods have made it super easy for you to go wireless. I truly cannot recommend this highly enough.

Clean Your Famicom, Master System, & N64 with 1Up Cleaning Cards!
How do you keep your retro video game systems clean? For me, I have turned to Adam at 1Up Card for years, as he offers a full line of options for cleaning just about all of my systems. From NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari, and more, he's had me covered. He recently expanded into some other systems and accessory cleaners I need to have added in my life!
First up is his Nintendo Famicom system cleaner. This is a newly manufactured console cleaner that gets inside the 60-pin connector of your system and allows you to clean your pin connector quickly and easily. The outer shroud is designed to help you get a good grip on the cleaner as you insert and remove it from the pins in your system.
Up next is the Sega Master System console cleaner. Much like the Famicom cleaner, this has been designed to be easy to hold, insert, and remove from your system as you remove years of dirt, grime, and other gunk from your system. After all, having a clean console is just as important as clean games.
Finally, I had forgotten but he recently released a cleaner for the Nintendo 64, but this is different. Unlike other cleaners which clean the systems, this actually cleans the port on the controller that your Rumble Pack or Memory Card inserts into. This is a brilliant idea as not only can dirt and grime get into that connector while being stored, oils and other contaminants from your hands can get into this port and cause issues.
These are awesome and Adam continues to do amazing work. I am definitely going to be picking these up for myself, and you can too at the links below:

Is It a $200 Improvement? PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge Review
In this episode, we unbox, test out, and evaluate whether or not the PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge controller is worth the $200 price tag.
When a modern video game controller feature that I don't think anyone has enjoyed has been a stick drift. First becoming prominent with the Nintendo Switch and now affecting other systems, stick drift is where an analog stick on a controller reads inputs even when at neutral. It is an annoying issue that can absolutely frustrate gamers during gameplay. While I have never encountered it with the Nintendo Switch, my launch day PS5 has most definitely suffered from stick drift.
The solution most people follow is to simply replace the controller. There are guides on how you can "repair" drifting controllers, but most of these are Band-Aid fixes at most. And any guide that tells you to use WD-40 as a solution should be ignored immediately! WD-40 is not a cleaner as much as it is a lubricant!
When Sony announced that they were going to release a pro-level controller I was not interested. At least at first. And when I saw that controller was going to have replaceable sticks, and those sticks would only be 20 bucks, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try. That controller is called the DualSense Edge, and it does look like a standard DualSense controller with a few minor tweaks.
On the face of it, you'll notice two additional buttons towards the center of the grip. These are essentially user-programmable macro buttons that can be used for just about anything on your system. Speaking of which, you can reprogram the entire button layout on this thing! If you want circle to act like triangle and triangle to act like cross and cross to act like square, go ahead and have at it. There's also user installable back paddles for those who do like to use that sort of thing (I don't). You can also adjust the throw of the l2 and r2 triggers via a series of convenient slide switches.
The ergonomics are virtually identical to the original DualSense controller, and that's a good thing as I love that controller. The Edge variant does feel a little bit heavier in the hands, and there's something about the buttons I just can't put my hands on but it feels different. It's almost like they're grinding or have additional resistance somewhere during the travel path as you press them. It's not something I like.
I charged it up on my KMD PS5 controller stand, my favorite one I've ever tested, and when it was done I plugged it in via USB-C cable to my PS5. Upon detecting the controller it also detected that there was a firmware update which took just a few minutes to go through. From there it walked me through a quick setup tutorial and we are on the gameplay.
I play a lot of racing games on my PS5, from Formula 1 to NASCAR to Sprint cars It's one of my favorite genres. Upon diving into NASCAR Heat 5, I did limit the L2 trigger travel In an effort to not lock up the brakes as frequently. And I'll tell you what, it worked! The analog sticks felt smooth and precise, and the throttle and brake felt great as well.
I went down to test many games with this, MLB The Show, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, Street Fighter 2 HD, and many more. The triggers, d-pad & analog sticks are the definite strong suits of this controller, they work so well. As I mentioned earlier, there's something about the button presses I just don't care for. There's something wrong here, something that grabs or grinds and I don't like it.
Why it RoX:
- Incredible quality
- Smooth analog sticks
- User-replaceable analog sticks
- Fully remappable
- Compatible with existing PS5 DualSense controller chargers
- Optional back paddles
- Storage and transport case included
What could be improved:
- Give me a version of the DualSense controller that just has this user-replaceable stick configuration
- Way expensive
- Face buttons don't feel great
- Only one color option
Should you buy one?
For the average consumer, I don't know that this is a must-own. I mean you basically have to replace your DualSense controller three times over to equal the value that this delivers for the price. That's four DualSense controllers to equal one of these. That being said, you cannot deny the quality of this unit, the ease with which you can replace the sticks, and all the optional features that Sony has baked into it. This is perhaps the finest controller they have ever produced, I just really wish they would produce one for the masses that essentially just added the user-replaceable stick option. That's all I want and honestly, all I need, unfortunately, I know that will never come.

WOW! WE Just Upgraded Our 3D PRINTER! The P1P is SO FAST!
One of the things I've taken an active interest in over the course of the last year and a half to two years has been 3D printing. What started out as a single ANET ET4 3D printer to do occasional prints here and there has turned into a printer farm. One of the printers I have really wanted for quite some time has been a Bambu Labs P1P, and I am happy to say I finally pulled the trigger and now own one. That's right, I just upgraded our 3D Printer and print farm to a Bambu Labs P1P! Let's take a look at the initial print quality and speed of this amazing machine.
For starters, the P1P is considerably faster than the other printers I have in my printer farm. It is able to do so thanks to a number of different development advancements. It also features something called an AMS, or an Automatic Material System, which allows me to print multiple colors all at the same time. That is one of the biggest reasons I wanted one of these printers, as I manually change the filament from one color to the next while I am printing.
I ran a test print just using one of the default programs that the printer came with, a Benchy. This is a sort of calibration print that allows you to check and see how your prints do and can regularly flag faults within your system. On my previous fastest printer a benchy would print in about 45 to 50 minutes. This one printed in only 18 minutes. Oh, and the quality was vastly superior to what I had used up to this point.
I'm currently working on printing signs for the Video Game Summit convention in Chicago, along with the Southeast Game Exchange and Greenville, South Carolina. Beyond that, I am working to expand my offerings on my 3D printer site. I am hoping that not only does this allow me to print faster, but with better quality, at a lower price, and be able to ship things out on a more timely basis. This thing is just so fast, I am so glad I upgraded to the P1P at this point!
Let me know if you have ever had any interest in 3D printing. Do you own a 3D printer, and if so what do you have? Let me know in the comments!

Better than Split Pad? ECHZOVE Dobe Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED Grip
In this episode, we unbox and test out the ECHZOVE Dobe Enhanced Eggshell controller grip designed for the Nintendo Switch and the Switch OLED.
I've talked at length about my dislike of the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. I don't like playing with Joy-Cons, I think the analog sticks are too small, they don't have enough throw, they don't feel precise, and don't get me started on the lack of a d-pad on the left side and how small the buttons are on the right. This is just part of the reason why I rarely play my Switch and handheld mode. But the team at ECHZOVE has once again sent us one of their grips for the Switch and Switch OLED, and it looks quite promising. Let's take a look.
There are quite a few standard features here that are an improvement over even their own previous generation rep for the Switch. The normal stuff is here, Rumble support, 6-axis gyro support, etc, but they've added a few things here that are nice. There are four total mappable back buttons, two on the left grip and two on the right. You can also turn on turbo fire or AutoFire if you would like as well. It also incorporates storage for four separate cartridges in the top of the grip, and a really nice kickstand if you want to plan tabletop mode.
A direct competitor to the Hori Split Pad Pro, this grip takes a slightly different direction and its design. Where the Split Pad is set up as two different pieces, this is one solid, molded piece. They give it some extra benefits from a form factor standpoint. First and foremost, they don't flex in your hands like the Split Pads do in the rails. This feels much more substantial in the hands. I also don't like the size of the grips on the Split Pad, these are smaller and more compact, and overall more comfortable. One benefit that the Split Pad does have is the fact that you can still dock your Switch with them on, you can't do that with this particular grip.
I started my testing with my original Switch, and while it was a loose sort of fit, it wasn't anything where I was afraid my system was going to fall out. I loaded up Street Fighter 30th Anniversary edition and got to playing. The analog sticks felt smooth and I was able to pull off all of the rolling sort of attacks like normal. The spinning sidekick and the Hadouken was just fine. I couldn't pull off moves that required a zigzag sort of input, so like the Shuriken I couldn't do with the analog stick. The D-pad, however, worked perfectly. It felt a little bit stiff so it wasn't as easy to roll with the Hadouken but I could pull off the Shuriken almost every time. Interesting.
I fired up the Switch online service and Star Fox on the Super Nintendo to test out the turbo and auto-fire. To enable turbo you hold the turbo button and press the button you want to have turbo functionality. Do this a second time and you get auto fire. I launched initially with auto fire on the blaster and it was perfect. This was exactly what I wanted it to do. Later on, I disabled that functionality and just use the normal fire buttons and it was great.
One of the most recent games that I've gotten is AEW Fight Forever, so I wanted to see how this would handle a straight-up fighting or wrestling game. Once again, the performance was wonderful. Button presses were exactly as they should be, the analog sticks work just fine. One thing I wish would be a little bit more impressive was the rumble. I'd say Rumble is more on par with a Joy-Con than a Pro Controller for example.
Why it RoX:
- Under $50
- Multiple color options are available
- Works with Switch and Switch OLED
- Built-in cartridge storage
- Nice kickstand
- D-pad integrated into left joy-con
- Better than the Split Pad
What could be improved:
- You cannot dock your system with this on it
- Rumble is a little bit weak
- Give me a cheaper version of this identical to it but minus the back buttons
- No USB-C Passthrough for power while playing
Should you buy one?
If you play your Switch and handheld mode a lot, this is definitely something you should consider. It's more comfortable than even their own previous generation grip, and in my opinion, blows the Split Pad out of the water. Additional features such as the cartridge storage and the robust kickstand are very much appreciated. I do wish the rumble was stronger, and I could do without the back buttons myself. Beyond these minor issues, however, this is a really stout grip that should be on your shopping list.

Use Any BlueTooth Controller with the N64! Even SWITCH ONLINE!
One of the things about the N64 is the fact that, while some love the controller, many do not. The N64 was the last generation of systems from Nintendo that didn't have an OEM wireless controller option. Well, Blue Retro has a wireless Bluetooth option which 8BitMods has put into a handy case, and man, this is promising.
Blue Retro has been working on some really cool adapters to allow you to use wireless controllers with a number of different systems. I recently saw that they had plans to release an N64 Bluetooth adapter, and knowing how well the GameCube mod worked I wanted to pick one of these up. For around $30 this should let us use just about any wireless Bluetooth controller with the Nintendo 64. I am going to test this out with a number of different options, including the N64 online controller for the Nintendo Switch. Another cool thing, I believe this also has a built-in memory card, super cool!
The one thing I wanted to check out was whether or not the Switch Online N64 controller could be paired to the adapter. The Nintendo 64 wireless controller is a full-size Nintendo 64-style controller! This controller is designed to be the perfect way to explore 3D worlds that debuted on the Nintendo 64 system. The built-in rumble functionality for compatible games works perfectly, and it was designed to be used with the Nintendo Switch Online library of games But what if you could use it on an actual N64?
Well, in our initial tests, yes, this does work! That's right, you can use the Switch Online N64 controller with the actual N64!
As always make sure you check out all the cool stuff going on at Castlemania Games. You can use promo code RoXolid0 to save 10% off of most items on the website. Some exclusions do apply, but thanks to Ryan for providing this awesome promotion to all of you our viewers.

What Was Sega Thinking With This Joystick?!? Sega Control Stick
During the '80s, joystick controllers were all the rage. The reasoning was sound, as that's what was found in the arcades and what people were used to playing games with them. So much so that Atari used joysticks with the 2600, 5200, and 7800. This led many to create joystick controllers for other systems as well. One of them, the Sega Master System, had one of the most odd joysticks ever made, the Sega Control Stick. It looks decent, but upon closer inspection, you can't help but wonder what was Sega thinking with this joystick.
The joystick itself works just like a standard Sega Master System Controller, but it was designed in such a way to give better theoretical control to players. A large joystick is on the right side of the controller, while larger 1 and 2 buttons were on the left side. That's right, unlike the majority of other controllers on the market which were designed for left-handed use of the control side of things, on the Control Stick players used their RIGHT hand for the joystick while the left hand operated the buttons.
Back in the day, you could pick up a Sega Control Stick for about $30 new, but there were also versions bundled with OutRun which sold for around $65. Another version was bundled with Sega's Rapid Fire Unit as well. Today, you can find these loose for about $15-$20.
The overall ergonomics on the Control Stick are ok, but I don't think they are great. I do appreciate the fact that the Joystick is not an uber-clicky microswitch setup as that annoys me to no end. While it only has 2 buttons, you can use the control stick on some Sega Genesis titles with limited success. It can also work with an Atari 2600 in a pinch.
I, personally, cannot get past the reversed layout of the Control Stick. AS such this has mostly collected dust since I bought it. Let me know if you've ever seen or used one of these and, if so, what did you think about it!

We SCORED a GRAIL GAME At the 2023 Illinois GameCon!
In this episode, we visit the 2023 Illinois GameCon in Bloomington-Normal Illinois where we sold a lot of stuff, bought a couple of things, made some trades, gave some folks a few gifts, and we received an award. Let's take a look.
For the last several years, we have participated in the Bloomington-Normal GameCon. We went first as shoppers, and for the last 3 years, we've actually helped our local store, Live Action Games, run their booth and sold products ourselves. This year, we once again shared our booth with Live Action Games, but we also shared part of our booth with Robert from Gaming off the Grid. This year also marked a slight name change for the convention, as it is officially the largest gaming convention in the state of Illinois it is now officially the Illinois GameCon.
I have been so busy lately, as you probably have noticed by the inconsistent uploads to the channel. As such, I hadn't even thought of things that I was looking for or hunting for at the convention. Looking back to what I was hunting for at Midwest Gaming Classic in April 2023, I wanted to see if I could find any of the Rock Man games for the Game Boy, and that was really about it. If something caught my attention I was of course going to give it some consideration but that was the main thing I was on the hunt for. It wasn't until later that I thought that I should see if I could find any Jaguar games. Dummy.
The setup for the show started on Friday afternoon. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend were actually with me as she made a number of crocheted characters and figures that she wanted to sell at the show. They have both been with me at Midwest Gaming Classic, but this was the first time they would actually be vendors at a show.
After set up, we headed back home, about 45 minutes away. There we waited for Kris from Game Dad and Jay from Square Pegs to show up. We met up with them At a local pizzeria and then headed back to the house to decompress and just hang out. I don't get many people down into the game room, but with both these guys coming I knew I had some gifts to bestow upon them.
I often mock Kris that he does not have a JVC X'EYE, and recently I traded for a second one. The idea was to give it to Jay, and while he appreciated it, he wasn't really excited about it. What he was excited about was my Sega Nomad which I received as a gift from Vorenge several years ago. I didn't play it, and since it was such a generous gift to me I didn't feel right selling it, so it got gifted to Jay. Kris, unfortunately, well I gave him the X'Eye.
As Saturday morning rolled around we were out the door before 7:00 a.m. as there was a VIP early entry to the show at 8:00 I needed to be ready for. We made final tweaks to our displays and got ready for the guest to come out in. Before the flood of people, I did have a chance to visit one of my favorite vendors who always has amazing import titles on his table. His brother has been in Japan for a number of years, which is where he is able to get great titles and send them back over here. I ended up picking up three games from him, Rock Man 3 for the Game Boy, Bonk's Adventure for the Game Boy, and a Grail that I never thought that I would own. He had the Japanese version of DuckTales 2, and the US version goes for silly money. I was able to bundle a few things, traded one of my LED lights that I sell, and we walked away with great deals on all three. In fact, these were the only three games I picked up all day long.
Around 1:00 Adrian and I had to go to the main stage to receive our 2023 Superstars of gaming awards from Walter Day. It's a bit surreal to think that I am now a member of an exclusive club that includes some of my best friends. I've also been able to talk with Walter quite a bit in the past, and I've always enjoyed his company. To be able to receive this was quite the honor and I really appreciate it.
Our final trade of the day came with one of our favorite people. He had a number of wood art an gaming signs that I was really digging, especially the Super Mario Bros one. He had come to our booth to check out our wares and wanted one of our TurboGrafx 16 LED signs. We worked a trade where he got one of my signs and I got one of his, and we were both thrilled.
We talked to so many people throughout the day at our booth, and we had a great time. I think my oldest daughter learned quite a bit about what it's like to be a vendor at one of these shows, not just a shopper. But she's already talking about going to the next one, planning to tweak her designs and make new ones.
Thanks to everybody who put on this event, it was once again amazing and has me excited to go to a few more conventions later this year I hope.

Ranking More Video Game Controllers | SEGA | Xbox | Nintendo
Regardless of the system you play on or the games you play, one thing is relatively constant: the controller you use to play the system and games. Over the years I have bought or avoided certain systems solely on the controller and whether I liked how it felt in my hands or not. What are some of my favorites? And least favorites? We take you through just a few of the best and worst video game controllers in our opinion.
Nintendo Wavebird:
One of my favorite controllers of all time is the Gamecube's, so when they made it wireless I was sold. The Wavebird is comfortable, it has good battery life, and it cut the cord! The only downside is the lack of rumble.
Atari 2600
I hated this controller so much! The rubber sleeve always came off, they always broke down, and they weren't comfortable! The day I discovered you could use the Genesis controllers with the Atari was a very good day indeed! Speaking of Sega...
Master System
This was a very good controller in my opinion, almost as good as the original NES controller. The one thing that holds it back in my opinion was the lack of a start or pause button on it. But it did not dig into your palm like the NES controller could.
Saturn 3D Controller
This is the basis for the Dreamcast controller and the Xbox Duke, and it should come as no surprise as I hate those controllers and also dislike this one. It's better than those others but it just feels like I am using a saucer to play games. Not good man!
Xbox 360 Controller
Out of all these controllers, this one is my least favorite. I've never liked the 360 controller, it is why I never bought a 360 back in the day! I still don't get Microsoft's infatuation with AA batteries either.
TurboGrafx 16 controller
Take everything I said about the Master System controller and the same holds true here, BUT it has a start/pause button AND integrated Turbo! Such a great controller!
Wii U Gamepad
Man, this thing is terrible. And it's less about the layout and more about how Nintendo made devs use it. I hated the Motion Controls on it, it ruined Starfox on the Wii U!
NES Dogbone Controller
One of the finest controllers ever made! I know some people don't like the angled buttons, but I like them. In fact, the B & A Buttons are angled like that to this day on the Nintendo Switch!

Hundreds of Dollars of Sega Games Added To Switch Online Service!
Nintendo has done kind of a mediocre job in adding games to the Switch Online Service from their own catalog, but thankfully Sega continues to deliver bangers with their contribution to the service. If you haven't launched it in a bit, you need to as 4 amazing titles just got added. Let's take a look:
Revenge of Shinobi
The Revenge of Shinobi was the first Shinobi game developed for the Sega Genesis. Alongside Shadow Dancer, the game is a sequel to Shinobi and features an original score by Yuzo Koshiro. Taking place three years after the first game, the criminal organization Zeed from the original game has since reformed and have renamed themselves "Neo Zeed". They decide to have their revenge on the Oboro Ninja clan and Joe Musashi by killing his master and kidnapping Joe's bride, Naoko. Joe, having reached the clan too late, manages to learn about Neo Zeed's plot by his dying master. Joe decides to travel the world to gain his revenge on Neo Zeed as well as try to save Naoko before it is too late.
Landstalker
Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole is an action-adventure game that was released for the Sega Genesis. Players take on the role of a treasure hunter named Nigel as he navigates a three-dimensional world through an isometric viewpoint, solving puzzles and fighting enemies.
Ghouls'N Ghosts
Three years after the events of Ghosts 'n Goblins, the Ghosts have returned with Ghouls for revenge, initiating a mortal holocaust on the Princess' kingdom as beams of light struck through countless villagers. When Sir Arthur returns to the village, his rescue attempt was too soon as his beloved Princess Prin-Prin also has her soul taken away from her body in front of his very eyes. Now it's up to the heroic knight once again to slay his way to the hellish castle to defeat the evil Lucifer and his legion of demons and restore the souls of Prin-Prin and every mortal.
Crusader of Centy
This action-adventure game for the Genesis centers on Corona, a boy who has just turned 14 years of age and must inherit his late father's sword to fight the monsters that threaten the human race's existence. Gameplay uses an overhead perspective and focuses on exploring, battling enemies with a sword, and solving puzzles. As the story progresses, numerous animals join the hero and aid him. They are used in gameplay like weapons or tools, which often grant passage to previously inaccessible areas.
These are all amazing games and worth it alone to get the Expansion Pass. Which of these 4 are your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Needs More Time in Developmental - AEW Fight Forever Switch | PS5 | Xbox
Back in the day there was one company that really led the charge when it came to wrestling games on systems such as the Nintendo 64 and the Sony PlayStation. I'm talking about THQ as they were the absolute kings of the mountain. For many years they had the licenses to WCW and the WWE games, but in recent years WWE has gone in a different direction. THQ is now back with a new tag team partner to try to take on the wrestling world and their first entry together is AEW Fight Forever.
This is a game that has seen its fair share of troubles before it even came out. It has been delayed multiple times, so much so that the roster is not 100% accurate. We have some pretty significant missing competitors such as Keith Lee, but we have some characters who have left AEW who are still in the game such as Cody Rhodes and William Regal. EVP Kenny Omega was actually one of the lead testers of this game before it came out, so I was hoping for something excellent as a wrestler had direct input on the finished product. Originally supposed to release earlier in 2023, it was delayed and pushed back a few times, we did not exactly have a release date for the longest time, but in late June of 2023, it is here on the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.
There are a few different gameplay modes that you can take part in regardless of which platform you are playing on. There are 1-on-1 matches, Lights Out matches, 2-on-2 matches, 3-way matches, 4-way matches, Casino Battle Royales, Exploding Barbed Wire Death Matches, Ladder Matches, mini-games, and a training area. You can play single-player locally, multiplayer locally, and multiplayer online. At this time I have not been able to determine whether or not there is cross-platform compatibility as we have not been able to test that functionality out at this time.
The Nintendo Switch version definitely has a reduced graphical quality versus the PS5 version. I would say the difference is very similar to MLB the Show on the Xbox and PlayStation 5 versus what's on the Switch. Certain things are just not as crisp, the character models look a little bit more plasticky, hair is a little bit less natural, and it's just not as polished on the Switch. There are also certain graphical issues that pop up on the Switch, including lag, delay, and physics issues. The physics of the ring ropes get really weird when you have more than two characters on screen at a time.
The different gameplay options that the game offers are quite fun, even if frustrating. Hit detection is not what it should be, and things like throwing your opponent over the ropes is not as fluent and intuitive as it should be. There are times when you go to throw your opponent over the rope and instead of doing so, you go behind them. It's just a weird way that it works and only happens in the casino battle Royale.
The audio in the game is pretty good, at least what's there. There is no running commentary whatsoever during any of the matches. There's no Jim Ross, there's no Tony Schiavone, there's no Excalibur, there's no Taz. All that you get is crowd noise and background music. The presentation is also limited by the very short wrestler entrances for each competitor. You get maybe 10 or 15 seconds of their entrance and that's it. That would be great if that was an option, just like you can turn entrances off, but give me the option for a full-blown entrance from the back to the ring. Speaking of the music, one thing that we were warned about was to make sure that we had certain music turned down because of the potential for content ID and copyright match issues. For the average game player that's not going to be a problem, but if you are a content creator and want to stream, that's a serious issue.
Why it RoX:
- Brings AW to the video game world
- Good selection for the roster
- Still offers the option to play as Cody Rhodes
- Player controls the pyro
- Interesting match choices
What Could Be Improved:
- Not a significant improvement in graphical fidelity from the switch to the play station
- Physics are not terrific in the Switch version
- No full entrances
- Where's the commentary?
- Long load times on the switch
- It's just not as good as what else is out there
Should You Buy It?
I was excitedly looking forward to AEW Fight Forever, and I have to admit I'm thrilled that I got a chance to get my hands on a couple of reviewed codes. I would have been frustrated if this would have been the game that I bought as it's just not ready even with the delays. I see promise here, and I see what they're going for and attempting but they just did not execute it well. And in a genre of games where I am looking for the excellence in execution I feel like I have been short changed slightly. I'm hoping that THQ can release patches to improve the overall performance on the Switch and the graphical fidelity on the PlayStation 5, but I would say right now wait for a sale.

What was YOUR First Launch Day Gaming System?
Over the years, I've had many different video game systems from Atari, Nintendo, Sony, and others. But there can only be one first, so what was the very first gaming system I got on the launch day? Was it the Super Nintendo? The NES? What about the Dreamcast? The results may surprise you.
In 2006, I was working for my first company in a non-retail role and making pretty decent money. As such when Nintendo announced the Wii at E3, I knew I had to have one. The day pre-orders opened I went to my local Gamestop to order, but the pre-orders were gone. Then I went to the next Gamestop, but that one was full too. I had one last chance, and I had to go somewhere I hated going. I had to go to Downtown Champaign, Illinois to Campustown, and there laid my last, best hope for a launch day Wii.
I hate one-way streets, which is part of the reason I hate going to Downtown Champaign. But this was a situation where I had to suck it up to get my launch day Wii, just like Cartman! When I got to the store I asked if there were any preorders available, and sure enough, there were! I managed to order my Nintendo Wii, a Classic Controller, and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel. I figured between those two and Wii Sports, I'd be golden for quite some time.
When I got my Wii, I also did something dumb. I traded in my PS2 and a bunch of games toward my Wii. Yea, I wasn't very smart about that. But man, I had so much fun with my Wii, and even play the same system 23 years later. I still have the original system, all the cords, my Wii Remote, and Nunchuck, however, I long since pitched the box.
What was the first system you got the day it first came out and was available? Did you get it yourself or was it a gift? Do you still have that system today? Let me know by commenting below!

We love seeing Retro-bit continue to work on releasing classic games from the past so current generation gamers can get their hands on them and play physical copies at a reasonable price. They also put so much care and attention into these sets to ensure that those who have the physical originals don't see the value of their games go down. These both look amazing and for me, I am really looking forward to testing these out!

WHOA! We Just Became One Of Walter Day's Video Game SuperStars!
At the 2023 Illinois Game Con, I had quite an honor bestowed upon me by someone I hold in high regard and esteem. I'm talking about Walter Day and the Walter Day SuperStars, receiving our own Video Game & Pinball Trading Card. That's right, We Just Became One Of Walter Day's Video Game SuperStars!
As the founder of Twin Galaxies, the oldest video game scorekeeping and adjudication service in history, Walter Day is known as the creator of e-sports and has often been called The Patron Saint of Video Games. His remarkable efforts to find, verify, and catalog video game world records has led to a decades-long partnership with The Guinness Book of World Records. He's been featured in the documentary "King of Kong", and also was immortalized in the Disney and Pixar movie "Wreck-It Ralph".
I was nominated for the award by Ryan Tauscher, who owns The Item Shop game store in Bloomington, IL and has been the organizer of the Bloomington-Normal Game Con, now the Illinois Game Con. Walter and I had originally discussed adding me way back in 2021 at the Pinball Expo. I was on a panel where several others were getting their awards and he asked me if I had been included yet. I mentioned I had not, and said he'd fix that. This would have happened much sooner, however, I kept dropping the ball and did not get them a photo or biography in a timely manor. As such, my induction and inclusion didn't happen until June 2023.
The Biography section of my card reads as follows:
A fan of video games since the original Atari 2600, Gary Katzer has been a lifelong fan of video games. In 2017, he took his passion and interest in gaming and content creation and launched RoXolid Productions. Focusing on modern and retro video games, accessories, tutorials, and product reviews, he strives to contribute in a positive way to the gaming community. He shares his passion for the hobby with others in a friendly, engaging, and easy-to-follow manner. Gary credits "Mr. Baseball" Bob Uecker, the voice of his hometown Milwaukee Brewers, for helping inspire his broadcast style.
Thanks to all those who have watched and supported the channel over the years. Also thanks to Todd Friedman and Walter Day for making this happen.

Budget Price, Pro Features: Mytrix Switch Pro Controller Review
In this episode, we unbox and test out the Mytrix Pro Controller designed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, Nintendo Switch Lite, iOS, and Android to see if this budget price controller has Pro features.
Playing the Nintendo Switch in docked mode with the Joy-Cons is just not a pleasant experience. The sticks are way too small, they tend to drift, and the buttons are too small, and it's just not a great way to play. A solution many people, including myself, have gone with has been the Switch Pro Controller which delivers a much better experience but is also fairly expensive. If you have multiple people in your home who are going to play, what are you going to do if you need more than one Pro Controller? The team at Mytrix is hoping to deliver a solution with their controller, featured here.
Out of the box, the overall shape and design I would say is closer to the Xbox Series S and X controller than the Switch Pro Controller. They offer a number of different colors and schemes with this particular model, and we went with the Zero-Kirin version that features a Gundam on the face. Charging is done by an included USB-C cable, and The controller features a 600mAh battery pack. Most of the major features from the Switch Pro Controller are here, wake from sleep which many budget controllers omit, Rumble, RGB lights behind both the sticks and the buttons that are independently controllable, and gyroscopic controls. One feature which is missing is NFC for Amiibo support.
In the hand, the controller feels very good. It doesn't feel budget or cheap, it actually feels quality. The one thing I will say is the surface of the plastics feel rather smooth and slick, some sort of texturing here would have improved that feature in the hands. The face buttons all feel very clicky, and even though the analog sticks are not all effect sensors, they are still very smooth. The D-pad feels very similar to a Sega Genesis D-pad and again felt very smooth and precise during initial testing.
I started out testing with the Super Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, as this is a good test for lag, latency, and delay. I personally prefer using the analog stick myself over the D-Pad with Street Fighter so that's what I started with, and within 20 seconds I was able to pull off all of Ryu's moves. The analog stick impressed me immediately, I must say that. The button presses were all terrific as well. It was so good that on the very first round with this controller I got a perfect score against Zangief. I almost duplicated that in the second round using the D-pad, but I missed one of my inputs and he got a hit in on me. He only got one other hit on me the entire round while using the D-pad, so far so good.
Next up was Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, definitely a less challenging game as far as the controls and putting them through their paces but still something that many people will play with this controller. Once again everything worked well, even the tilt controls for steering even though I did not show them on screen. The one thing I did not realize was someone had used my profile since the last time I had played so the auto accelerate and auto steering assist were both turned on. I turn those off and it worked beautifully.
Everything that I threw at this controller worked beautifully. Kirby and the Forgotten Land, ideal. The rumble is absolutely phenomenal and I really felt it while playing Kirby. The auto and turbo fire works perfectly too, as playing any of the on-rail shooters, shmups, or anything along those lines worked great as well. Star Fox was a perfect example of this. And the D-pad worked great for the Nintendo Switch Online games, like Super Mario World, Metroid, Yoshi's Island, and Mario 64.
Why it RoX:
- Only $40
- Multiple styles and colors available
- RGB lights
- Precise sticks
- USB-C for charging
- Turbo and AutoFire
- Integrated headphone jack
- Programmable back buttons
What could be improved:
- Typos in the instruction manual
- Not compatible with the fixture gaming S1 or S2
- I would prefer that the back buttons would not be programmed to anything out of the box
Should you buy one?
This is an exceptional controller for the money! For only $40 you get a lot of terrific features. It is well-balanced, precise, and comfortable, and it just works. Myself, I'm not a big fan of the back buttons, but I know that I'm a bit odd as far as that goes. Beyond that, the typos in the instruction manual made setting up and controlling the lights a little bit more challenging initially, and it simply does not work with the Fixture Gaming S1 or S2. Beyond those most minor of nitpicks this is definitely a controller which you should have on your shopping list if you are looking to pick up something to replace a broken controller, Joy-Cons, or just need additional controllers for your Nintendo Switch.

WUT?!?! Ducktails 2 for under $50 at Illinois Game Con!?!
One of the most sought-after games for the NES is Ducktales 2. This is a game that was released late in the life of the Nintendo Entertainment System, which led to fewer copies being made and sold, which is why it now commonly sells for over $200 on the low side. Well, what if I told you I got a legit copy of Ducktales 2 for under $50 at the 2023 Illinois Game Con? Here's how we picked up an authentic Ducktales 2 cartridge for under $50.
For years, I have been a huge proponent of importing video games as they are often the same as their US Counterparts, but available for much less. I own multiple Famicom consoles, and also a Sharp Famicom Twin Turbo. Finally, I have a 60-to-72-pin adapter so I can play imports on my NES, and I have multiple clone systems which can play Famicom cartridges directly. This was my secret for getting Ducktales 2 for under $50.
One of the vendors I had bought from in the past had another great table with import games for the Famicom and Super Famicom, Japanese Game Boy, Famicom Disk System, and other Japanese games. Unlike European games, Japanese games utilize the NTSC video format, the same as in the USA. This means that you can play a Japanese game on the same system as long as the pins match. For NES Games, you can get an adapter that will let you play these imported Famicom games on a US NES or NES-compatible system, and those adapters are really inexpensive.
If you don't have a local store or swap meet to get import games for the Famicom, Super Famicom, or other systems, where can you find them? I will say I highly recommend Japan Retro Direct as they are the unofficial-official import online store of our channel. Vinnk from @FamicomDojo runs the site and has amazing games at very fair pricing. I cannot recommend his site highly enough as it's simply amazing.
Have you ever purchased anything along these lines? Have you ever gone to a video game convention? Let me know in the comments!

YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS AMAZING CUSTOM SUPER MARIO BROS WOODWORK!
For the last five or six years I have visited the Bloomington normal GameCon, first as a patron in the last few years as a vendor. In 2023, we had our biggest year at the show, meeting some amazing people, displaying some super fun 3D-printed items, and making a lot of new friends. We actually met up with one of our old friends from the very first year that we were down at the Missouri game con, and he was doing some really creative signage with wood burning. Let's take a look at what we got because you won't believe this amazing custom Super Mario Bros woodwork we came home with!
So I met this particular vendor back at the MoGameCon in 2018, and he was selling reproductions of Splatterhouse for the NES. This was a game that was never released on the NES, so I was definitely intrigued. I picked one up and I still have it sealed in the game room. Nonetheless, every time I see him at a show I always make sure that I go and say hi to him and we connect even for just a few minutes because he is just a really cool dude.
At the 2023 Illinois Game Con, he had some of his typical retro gaming stuff for sale but he also had a number of really beautiful wood-burned and wood-carved signs. They had a three-dimensional sort of shadow box look to them and they looked absolutely phenomenal. I looked at them several times when I took a break from my booth, and I really liked them. He came by our booth as we were shutting down and took a liking to some of our light boxes. We started discussing things and I asked him if he would be interested in a trade, one of his signs for one of my signs. And the deal was done.
The one I decided to go with was the Super Mario Bros one that he had on the booth, and I absolutely love the caricatures he went with. I love the detail of both Mario and Luigi and the Super Mario Brothers logo at the top of the box. Overall it was just a really neat piece, and I am looking forward to displaying it now in our game room.
When I got home and showed my youngest daughter, she absolutely flipped as she is completely enthralled with the Super Mario Bros movie right now. She is super excited for us to mount this downstairs in her part of our basement in her playroom, and to be honest with you, that may be where I put it.
Have you ever purchased anything along these lines? Have you ever gone to a video game convention? Let me know in the comments!

Our Booth Is Ready To Sell At The Illinois Gamecon 2023!
What do you do when you need to unload some excess gaming gear? What about if you have crafts to sell? What if you just want to meet some of the best people in the gaming hobby? Well for us, we set up a booth and get ready to sell at the Illinois Gamecon. Let's take a look at our setup this year as Our Booth Is Ready To Sell At The Illinois Gamecon 2023!.
When people ask me what my hometown convention is, my answer is a bit strange because I don't have just one. Being from Milwaukee, the Midwest Gaming Classic is my hometown convention. It is 3 hours away but the MoGameCon was the first convention I ever attended, the first convention I was ever on a panel on, and we have very special memories of it, so in a way that's also my home convention. But my closest convention is one that has really blossomed the last several years, and that is 45 minutes from my home at the Illinois Game con.
Previously known as the Bloomington-Normal GameCon, the Illinois Game Con has returned to the Interstate Center, but this year is even larger. The main hall footprint of the area is actually very similar to the MoGameCon, however, I would say this hall is a bit deeper, whereas MoGameCon is a bit wider. Vendors from all over the country are in attendance, along with terrific guests. Walter Day was on hand, Daniel Pesina from Mortal Kombat, Tim Kitzrow who was the voice of NBA jam, and many more. I will be on hand this year to once again support our local store, Live Action Games, also selling as well. I have some of my commons and duplicates for sale, extra systems that I had purchased on Facebook marketplace with the idea to flip, and a ton of 3D prints.
Doors open at 9:00 a.m. for the general public, and 8am for those who have bought the VIP pass. It is great to see this convention get this type of support. I talked to many people that had no idea that conventions such as this were a thing and this was their first event. It's great to see something like this grow the interest in the hobby so well.
