WHAT IS THIS?!? An NES Advantage for Famicom - ASCII Stick Turbo Jr
I love the Famicom, the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System. I think it has an amazing style, it is ideally Japanese in every way. I love the look of the cartridges with the different art and colors from what we got in the US. One of the advantages, pun intended, that the NES had over the Famicom was in the controller options for the system. Nintendo themselves had the NES Advantage arcade-style joystick, but did you know that there was actually a version in Japan for the original Famicom? There was, and it was by the same manufacturer as the SNES Advantage, the ASCII Stick Turbo Jr!
Just like the NES Advantage, the Stick Turbo Jr is an arcade style controller manufactured by Asciiware and released for the Famicom. Designed to sit on a flat surface with your left hand using the joystick and the right hand operating the buttons. It features an adjustable Turbo functionality for the A and B buttons, and like the Advantage the speed is adjusted by rotating a dial to make the turbo faster or slower. There's also a Slow-Motion switch which rapidly pauses and un-pauses your game as you play.
Unlike the NES Advantage, there's no on/off switch for the turbo functionality. If you rotate the dials all the way counterclockwise it actually "clicks" to turn the turbo off versus the push button operation of the NES Advantage.
Also, unlike the NES Advantage, the ASCII Stick Turbo Jr doesn't have 2 controller plugs, as the Famicom only had 1 expansion port on the face of it (or side on the Famicom Turbo Twin systems from Sharp). This port can both work with Player 1 or Player 2, so a second connector was simply not necessary.
Did you ever know this was a thing? Do you own a Famicom? Have you ever wanted to get an NES Advantage-style controller for the Famicom? Share your thoughts in the Comments!

Sega Genesis VS Super Nintendo | Which Had the Best Controller?
During the 16-bit era, there were battles upon battles. From Blast Processing on the Genesis and Mega Drive to Mode 7 Graphics on the SNES, Sega CD versus, well, we all know what didn't happen with the Nintendo CD add-on. One of the things about both systems that people argued about was which controller was superior. While I think most will agree the 6 Button Sega Controller was superior to the 3 button one, what about comparing the 6 Button Genesis controller vs the Super Nintendo one? Both are awesome, but is one better than the other?
Genesis/Mega Drive:
The Genesis 6 button controller is an improvement over the original in every way. The controller is slightly smaller, which I prefer myself. The D-Pad still feels good, plus the A/B/C/ and X/Y/Z buttons all are placed well and super-responsive. It is well-balanced and laid out, and provides more buttons than the original did for better control. I do like that the A/B/C and X/Y/Z buttons are concave/convex to be easier to feel your way around as you play.
Super Nintendo/Super Famicom
The Super Nintendo Controller took the NES design and definitely addressed many people's complaints while keeping its strengths. The NES D-Pad was excellent, and the SNES' was as good. 2 additional face buttons were added, plus the L & R shoulder buttons for additional inputs and control. The Super Famicom buttons were all the same shape, but different colors, where the SNES controller had 2 shades of purple for the buttons but mixed concave and convex shapes.
My Favorite
Super Nintendo, all the way. I still would love to see an SNES controller button shape with the Super Famicom button colors, but I prefer Nintendo's option to Sega's. I think the shape fits my hand better, I like the D-Pad design more, and the shoulder buttons are easier for me to use consistently compared to the X and C buttons on the Genesis controllers. Both are good, and both are usable, but to me, the Super Nintendo Controller is the superior option.

3 Great NIntendo Switch Games For Younger Kids For Christmas Presents
It seems like kids are growing up faster and faster these days, and having technology in their hands at a younger and younger age is more common than ever. As such, more kids are getting their own Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED for the holidays, whether Christmas, Hanukkah, or other winter holidays. I often get asked this time of year for game recommendations appropriate for younger kids, under 8 years old or so. These are for less skilled kids, who haven't developed hand/eye coordination that the older kids have, or otherwise don't have experience with video games. Here are 3 great games that hold younger kiddos' hands and still are fun games for the entire family.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze:
Arctic invaders have turned Donkey Kong Island into their personal frozen fortress, and it’s up to you to save the day. Play as Donkey Kong in Original Mode and team up with Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong—each with unique abilities—to overcome platforming challenges and frosty foes.
For a more accessible experience, start a game in Funky Mode to enjoy a range of gameplay updates and a new main-character option, spectacular surfing simian Funky Kong! His extra hearts and unique abilities make for a more relaxed gaming experience. And no matter which mode you choose, a wealth of collectibles and two-player co-op round out the fun!
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:
Burn rubber across Mushroom Kingdom raceways—underwater, in the sky, upside-down in zero-g, and past the finish—for the win! Get revved up for local multiplayer, online in-game tournaments, a revamped battle mode, and more! With many control options and handheld mode, there’s always a way to play on the Nintendo Switch system!
Super Mario Wonder:
Mario and friends have been invited to visit the colorful Flower Kingdom, just a short hop away from the Mushroom Kingdom. Unfortunately, King Bowser has transformed into a flying castle and is causing chaos across their peaceful land. Now our heroes must save the day—and the Flower Kingdom—in this wonderous new adventure!
Nabbit and Yoshis won’t transform with power-ups, but they also don’t take damage from enemies, so they’re perfect for players who are just starting out. Whichever color Yoshi you choose, they can all eat enemies, spit out stuff (enemies, shells, and other items), flutter jump, and help carry other players—even ones in Elephant form! With Nabbit, this sneaky little fellow can turn any extra power-ups he finds into flower coins. Ka-ching!

First Look Stream : Assault Suits Valken by Masaya Games and Retro-bit
Over the past 5 years, Retro-bit has had a beautiful tendency to bring some of the best games never to see their way out of Japan back out and localized for different regions. Whether we are talking about one of their first, Holy Diver, or their more recent, Assault Suits Valken, they have done amazing work to provide fans of long-lost games the versions they've been looking for.
One of the awesome things about this game is that they have offered me an opportunity to play and stream it and share my thoughts before the Pre-Order even closes! That's right, I actually am getting the opportunity to play test one of the earliest copies of Assault Suits Valken (aka Cybernator in the USA) while you can still pre-order it! How cool is that? We'll be streaming Assault Suits Valken, with a stream on our YouTube channel here at YouTube.com/@RoXolid/Live on Friday, November 3 2023, and on the Retro-bit Twitch channel! That's right, we're simulcasting! You'll want to make sure to join us as we're not only answering questions and giving you a look at the game, but Retro-bit will have a giveaway to give a copy away to one lucky viewer. I may even toss in some 3D printed items as well for giveaway! Like how cool is that, we get to help Retro-bit give away free video games!
Their latest release, Assault Suits Valken, comes in one of two different completion levels. They are:
Assault Suits Valken: Deluxe Edition
North America (NTSC) / Europe (PAL)
MSRP (NA/EU):
$79.99 / €89,99
Assault Suits Valken: Collectors Cartridge
North America (NTSC) / Europe (PAL)
MSRP (NA/EU):
$59.99 / €64,99
Have you heard of these games before? Have you played any of the subsequent re-releases? I'm definitely interested in picking up one of each set, one with the Super Famicom-shaped cartridge and one with the Super Nintendo-shaped cartridge since I have both systems. I also think the bronze and gold cartridge collars are an interesting idea to differentiate the two different completion levels. Let me know if this is something you would consider down on the comments.

CANCELLED! RoboCop: Rogue City No Longer Coming To Nintendo Switch! :(
As a child of the '80s, one of my favorite movies from the era has to be the original RoboCop. Seeing Alex Murphy whack people with that amazing gun, him driving like a lunatic, the satirical news stories, the 3000 SUX, what was there not to love? You can imagine my excitement when I heard that there was going to be a game set between the first two movies called RoboCop: Rogue City. Originally announced for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation, I was really excited to get it on the Switch. Well, the PlayStation and Xbox versions are out and unfortunately, it looks like the Switch version has been canceled.
Make sure to follow Gaming Off the Grid at https://www.youtube.com/@UC2CajRzsAdJZta2mgeZzpXg
According to Variety Magazine:
The game was first announced in July 2021 with a release set for June 2023. But, it was delayed and pushed back to November. In addition, Teyon and Nacon planned for “RoboCop: Rogue City” to be playable on the Nintendo Switch set for sometime in 2024. Nevertheless, the Nintendo release was cancelled altogether in Oct. 2023.
I'm not going to lie, I am really disappointed to hear this. I loved the RoboCop movies and was looking forward to the game. I will probably end up picking up now for the PlayStation 5, but I'm going to have to wait for it to go on sale. Well I love the series, I don't want to drop 60 bucks on this.
Have you played it yet? What do you think of it? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments.

Retro Games at Gamestop? We Just Scored 2 Great GameCube Deals!
I know that Gamestop, deservedly so, gets a ton of flack for being, well, Gamestop. The store in Champaign, IL used to be phenomenal. I've discussed how they called me the night before PS5 Pre-Orders opened and told me to get there in the AM to get one pre-ordered. Since then the manager, assistant manager, and all the old staff have left. That store is, well, not run well currently. However, I have been going to the store in Bloomington, IL lately and they are pretty cool guys, and they also now have Retro Games on-site. On my last visit I was shocked to see Retro Games back at Gamestop, and recently I scored 2 great GameCube game deals! Let's take a look!!
When I was in the store, I noticed right away that they had a few GameCube Games, but when I saw the prices I had to do a double take. They had both Mario Kart Double Dash and Super Mario Sunshine WITH the cases! Sunshine even had the insert, but both were missing the manuals. They had Super Mario Sunshine for $27.99, and Double Dash for $37.99. I just recently renewed my Pro membership, which meant I was going to get both of these for a lot less than normal!
Now, both game discs have some issues and need to be polished, but I can do that locally at Live Action Games for a few dollars. The cases are in great shape, and getting the insert with Sunshine is awesome. I've been looking at manuals on Ebay and they seem to be around the $15-$20 range, which still leaves me room to make a few bucks from these games.
Have you seen retro games showing up again in your local Gamestops? Would you have bought thes if you saw them in your local store? What do you think of Super Mario Sunshine (meh for me) and Mario Kart Double Dash (best in the series for me). Share your thoughts in the comments!

Must-Play Halloween Video Games | Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Today is the day, all Hallows Eve, and throughout October 2023 we have been discussing some of our favorite games to play around the Halloween season. Now it is time to reveal our favorite of all of our Halloween games.
I will admit that Halloween is not one of my favorite times of the year. As such, I'm particular in the Halloween-themed games that I play each October. As such, I wanted to share some of my favorite games to play around Halloween with you. I don't dig a ton of blood, guts, and gore, but one series that is full of all of that has won me over. That is why Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition is not just a must-play game for Halloween, but it's a must-play if you own a Wii!
As I generally do not like slasher movies, I don't like gory movies or movies with tons of violence, it may come as a surprise that my favorite game to play this time of year is Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition. I had no experience in this franchise before Resident Evil 4, and looking back at previous games I'm glad this was my entry point. Knowing nothing about the franchise or characters, I just knew that it was an action third-person shooter with a really interesting story.
I know many people were not very excited about waggle controls or motion controls on the Wii, but I have to say that Resident Evil plays phenomenally on this platform, perhaps one of the best to ever utilize motion controls. Using the Wii remote gave you precision and accuracy that simply was not available on the PlayStation at the time, and it also provided a visual upgrade over the GameCube.
Through Resident Evil 4, I've actually dove into other games in the series. I've gone back to play Resident Evil 1 through 3, and I will tell you they were disappointing compared to Resident Evil 4. I thought Resident Evil 5 was decent, 6 was not so good. I have not played Resident Evil VILLage as of yet, it is something I own but have not had a chance to get to.
What is your favorite game to play around Halloween? How do my games rank up compared to yours? Let me know in the comments

Instant Buyer's Remorse | I've Preordered a PlayStation Portal
There are many things I have bought over the years that I have not loved after the fact. But there are few things I have pre-ordered that I know going into it I'm going to probably not care for. One of the latest I just recently preordered is a Sony PlayStation Portal, and I had instant buyer's remorse after I preordered. So why did I do it? Let's dive into it.
First and foremost, I am not the biggest handheld gamer. I love my older, retro handhelds but I rarely, if ever, play the Switch in Handheld Mode. For me, I need a larger screen at this point in my life, so having a smaller screen on a Switch, Switch Lite, or even sometimes the Switch OLED leaves me squinting or wanting more. While the screen size will be closer to the Switch OLED's, I'm still not looking forward to playing on that small of a screen.
Secondly, I just canceled my PlayStation+ subscription, so I will not have access to the online streaming games from the retro library. As such, I am also wondering what parts of my library, if any, will I be able to access? Can I play a disc-based game if the disc is the system? I don't know.
Third, I am concerned about the analog sticks. Stick drift with potentiometers is real. I can't use my launch day DualSense controller because it drifts. I did pick up the PlayStation Edge controller, and it's fantastic, but I don't want to have to drop another $200 if the Portal develops stick drift. Can you swap the sticks? I don't know.
Finally, I want to see how the Portal performs if I connect to my cell phone outside of my home network. I know that my home network, with 1 gig fiber internet, I cannot play cloud-based gaming reliably through PSN on my PS4 or PS5. How is a 5G cellular connection going to be able to handle this? I don't know and I am legit concerned.
If not for this channel, I don't know that I would buy one of these, but I am committed to bringing you the best content possible. Let me know if you have any specific games you want to see tested. I'd also like to know if you are getting a Portal as well.

Nintendo Switch Nyxi Hyperion Joy-Con Grips | Underwhelming but Flashy
In this episode, we unbox and test out the Nyxi Hyperion Joy-Con controllers for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite.
The Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, people love them, and they love to hate them. Almost as soon as the Switch was announced, companies went to work to develop third party replacements. This became even more important when Joy-Con drift became a thing. Nyxi has produced a number of different options for years, and we just received their Hyperion controllers to test.
This version that they sent me features a transparent case so you can see all the inner workings. Something I actually really enjoy. The outer shell is a very smooth plastic, a little bit too slippery for my taste. Designed to be much larger in size than the original Joy-Cons, the left controller even features a traditional D-Pad instead of the up, down, left, right, buttons. The back of the controllers have been molded in such a way to give you a more positive grip without needing to utilize any sort of external case.
The Hyperion controllers include a number of interesting features. A set of LED lights are included for each of the controllers and can be changed from a constant color to a breathing mode where the LEDs fade in and out. You can also turn them off all together to save battery life. Each controller also includes turbo functionality, and back buttons.
Pairing to the Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED is fairly easy. Simply slide the controllers onto your Switch rails and they connect. You can now remove them to use them in the included joiner to create a pseudo wireless Pro Controller. While connected to the rails, the Hyperion controllers will charge, but they also both feature a USB-C port on the underside so you can charge them separately from the system.
Upon getting them paired and fired up I got to some handheld gameplay. One thing of note, this does make your Nintendo Switch considerably wider, so if you don't like how large the Switch is to begin with this makes it even more so.
Using my Street Fighter 2 test, both the analog stick and D-Pad seem to work okay, however I could not pull off the dragon uppercut consistently at all. It did not matter if I used the analog stick or the D-Pad, it just could not interpret the inputs correctly to pull off the move. This is kind of disappointing.
Next, I moved over to Super Mario 3D World, a game that is much less intensive for controller inputs. With a traditional 3D platformer, I had no issues whatsoever with the Hyperion. Mario jumped, bounced, and stomped enemies precisely as he should.
Next up, I wanted to put the turbo to the test with Star Fox on the Super Nintendo Switch online. This underscore to me how the left and the right Joy-Cons have no direct communication with each other, as I had to hit the turbo button on the corresponding right Joy-Con along with the fire button to get it to work properly. It's a minor annoyance, but something I wish they would improve. This also made me notice the fact that the LED breathing patterns were not synchronized from the left to the right controller.
In Star Fox, the turbo and autofire worked great, when it worked. I had more than a few occasions where the auto fire just stopped autofiring. I have no idea why this did this, and it was more than a little annoying.
Why it RoX:
- Feature packed
- Neat-looking LED lights
- Includes joiner to be used as a pro controller
- D-Pad instead of up down left right buttons on left Joy-Con
- Programmable back buttons
- Turbo
What could be improved
- Sticks do not utilize hall effect sensors
- Inconsistent performance in Street Fighter
- Left and right controllers do not communicate with each other to sync
- Over slippery design
- Does not wake Switch from sleep
- Not compatible with amiibo
Should you buy one?
While I have generally been a fan of Nyxi products in the past, this version of the Hyperion controller leaves quite a bit to be desired. The inconsistent performance of the analog stick and the D-Pad in fighting games is definitely noticeable. This version also does not include Hall effect sensors on the analog sticks, however, they do offer a version which does. In the grand scheme of things, I still think these are better than the split pad or the split pad proof by hori, but there are few too many things going on here for me to strongly recommend them at this time. In the end, I think they are Underwhelming but Flashy.

Must-Play Halloween Video Games | Ghosts 'N Goblins | Ghouls 'N Ghosts
I will admit that Halloween is not one of my favorite times of the year. As such, I'm kind of particular in the Halloween-themed games that I play each October. As such, I wanted to share some of my favorite games to play around Halloween with you. I don't dig a ton of blood, guts, and gore, but one series I cannot deny is both awesome and awesomely difficult is Capcom's Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Ghosts 'N Goblins. Let's take a closer look at why I believe Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Ghosts 'N Goblins are must-play Halloween video games.
In Ghosts 'n Goblins, the player assumes the role of Arthur, a knight who must venture into the Demon Realm village in order to rescue his princess sweetheart. Arthur uses a variety of projectile weapons such as lances, axes, and daggers to eliminate anything that stands in his way.
In Ghouls 'N Ghosts which is set three years after Ghosts 'n Goblins, Lucifer, the ruler of the Demon Realm, takes away the souls of everyone in the kingdom, including Princess Prin Prin. It's up to Arthur to save his beloved princess again, and return the souls back to the people of the kingdom.
In most of the main series, once completing the game the player is forced to re-play the game's stages at a higher difficulty level in order to receive the game's "true" ending. The series has gained a reputation among gamers for its high level of difficulty.
I have never beaten any of the Ghouls 'N Ghosts or Ghosts 'N Goblins games, and I probably never will. What about you, have you ever beaten any of the games in the series? Let me know in the comments!

EXTREME SOLDERING CLOSE UP 10 Inch Digital JOYALENS JL249MS Microscope
In the past, one of my favorite things about retro gaming was seeing what sorts of mods I could install to improve the visual quality of different video game systems. HDMI Mods in my NES, RGB Mods to my SNES Jr, Super Famicom Jr, and Nintendo 64, are all great and relatively easy to install. Since my Bells palsy in 2021, however, my vision has been negatively affected and I can no longer see close-up details of PCBs. I've searched for a number of solutions and JOYALENS has just sent us their JL249MS 10-inch LCD Monitor Digitial Microscope.
There are a variety of these sorts of devices out there, some that have a 4.3" display, some that feature a 7" display. This 10-inch display is one of the biggest I've seen out there! Not only that, it outputs via HDMI so technically I could connect it to my 32" gaming monitor for even a larger display!
It comes with 3 lenses depending on your application and need, 60-240x, 18-720x, 1800-2040x. It can capture video recordings at 288x2160 (odd aspect ratio) or it can capture 24MB Photos at 5600x4200. It includes a 32GB Micro SD Card for both photo capturing and video recordings.
Inside the box we received the Digital Microscope itself, Metal stand, 3 Lenses (Lens A x1, Lens D x1, Lens Lx1), USB cable, Switch cable, HDMI cable, Remote control, Slide holder, Slides kit, Observation box, Tweezers, 32GMicro SD card, and the Instruction sheet.
I have a number of Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP mods I need to work on, so I am really excited for the timing of this. Let me know in the comments if you've ever used (or needed to use) a digital microscope to be able to compensate for other visual issues!

Retro Frog ROTATE for Nintendo Switch Switch OLED
In this episode, we test out the RoTATE by Retro Frog, designed to allow you to play Arcade Classic Games that have been ported to the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED in the proper orientation and aspect ratio.
Moment of truth here, when I first got back into retro gaming I wanted full-screen display for my games. Yup, I was one of those who couldn't stand having those bars on either side of my game, so I would play 4:3 games in 16:9. Well, you live, you grow, you learn, and so did I, and as such I can no longer play retro games in the wrong aspect ratio.
I suspect that was the same mindset Todd Gill from Retro Frog had when he designed the RoTATE. As he says in his own words from his Kickstarter campaign:
"I was sitting out in my garage running a garage sale and found myself bored as the sale was going slow with a customer maybe every 15 or 20 minutes. I thought about bringing my Nintendo Switch out there with me and playing in between customers. However I largely play the Switch in console mode attached to a monitor in my office. I've personally found that, due to the large size and weight of the Switch, my hands would begin cramping up. Sure, the Switch has a kickstand built in, but, depending on which version you have, it ranges from not very useful to somewhat useful. So I gave up on playing the Switch while I was out there."
"Later that night, I started thinking about it again. We like to travel and the idea of bringing the switch along is really appealing. So I set out to design a stand that could hold the Switch with the ability to adjust tilt AND rotation as many Nintendo Switch games including vertical or TATE orientation display options. Hence RoTATE was born. "
Todd did go through a few production delays, as he had intended to ship in December 2022. I received my RoTATE from Kickstarter (yes, I did back the project and this was not provided for review) in mid-2023. When I received it, the final assembly was quite easy. I had to attach the main part to the base with the included thumbscrew, adjust the angle of the neck, and I was ready to go!
While Todd had discussed the Nintendo Switch in the Kickstarter, I was curious to see if it would fit the Switch Lite. I had thought the Lite was shorter, and within seconds it was confirmed that it would not fit. However, the RoTATE does fit the original Switch and Switch OLED beautifully. I especially appreciate the alignment posts at the bottom of the mount, along with the "USB ↓" that he added to the print. Thanks, Todd, I needed that! However not only does it tell the mounting orientation, the pegs hold the Switch in place so it doesn't slide side-to-side while playing. It also maintains the proper balance while you're playing.
The base and mount are both pretty cleverly designed as well. You can adjust the viewing angle in 18-degree increments, so it is easier to get the right angle (not 90 degrees) for your viewing comfort. The ball-bearing supported mounting block locks into position every 90 degrees with to lock it into place. This is a very well-thought-out and simple design!
There are a ton of shooters on the Switch that feature TATE mode, but for me the only thing I really have is Donkey Kong. I went through the menu and set up TATE mode and got to playing, and man, this was wonderful! The game was no longer restricted by the height of the Switch display, it now took up the display much more fully! Now, DK isn't the exact right aspect ratio to be full screen in TATE mode on the Switch, but it's pretty close.
Why It RoX:
- Well-thought-out design
- Ball Bearing Supported
- Disassembles for easy transport
- Much more sturdy than the stock Switch kickstand
- Unlocks proper aspect ratios for certain games
- Supports a small business
What could be improved:
- 3D Printed instead of injection molded
- Not compatible with Switch Lite (would require a redesign)
- Not as appealing for those who don't need Tate Mode
Should you buy one?
Todd has created a really neat stand here for the Switch and does address a need for some. TATE mode has been baked into the Evercade EXP and original handheld, so there is an audience for it. How large is that audience, however? I have 1 game, Donkey Kong, that supports TATE mode, although I do still want to get the physical Switch Version of Ikaruga ($$$). I think if you know what TATE mode is, this is a must-buy. If you know of it but not what it's called, this may go over your head. Even if you don't need TATE mode, this is an awesome tabletop stand for the Switch and Switch OLED, and something you should consider.
This is available on Kickstarter at this time but will be coming to Stone Age Gamer soon.

Must-Play Halloween Video Games | Luigi's Mansion Gamecube 3DS Switch
I will admit that Halloween is not one of my favorite times of the year. As such, I'm kind of particular in the Halloween-themed games that I play each October. As such, I wanted to share some of my favorite games to play around Halloween with you. I don't dig a ton of blood, guts, and gore, but one game I get gleeful delight from every time I play, and a game I consider one of the Must-play Series to play for Halloween is Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo Gamecube, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for the 3DS (and soon the Nintendo Switch), and Luigi's Manion 3 for the Nintendo Switch. Let's take a closer look.
At it's core, the Luigi's Manion Series is more of a puzzle game than an action game or a platformer. It's interesting that it was a launch title for the GameCube and not a Mario Game, but it definitely paved the way for an amazing series.
In the first game, Luigi gets a letter about winning a mansion in a contest he did not enter. He informs Mario and they agree to meet up outside the mansion that evening. Luigi follows a map to the mansion, located in a dark forest, and finds it more sinister-looking than the supplied photo. With Mario nowhere to be found, Luigi enters the mansion alone to try to find and rescue Mario.
There are staples of the series, such as the helpful but slightly odd Professor E.Gadd, the Poltergust Ghost Vacuum, and Luigi's charming humming of the main theme. We've also got the addition of King Boo to the series through Luigi's Mansion.
Luigi's Mansion was followed up years later with a Nintendo 3DS Sequel which was very similar to the first game, and it will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2024 reportedly as a remastered version. Finally, Luigi's Mansion 3 was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and is a wonderful addition to the series.
Which is your favorite Luigi's Mansion game? Did you ever get past that creepy baby? Share your thoughts in the comments!

An EDIBLE Retro Nintendo NES Console? HECK YES! Just Take Small Bytes!
An Edible Nintendo NES Console? But how do you eat an NES? The answer? You Just Take Small Bytes! I'm sure many of you have heard the term hunting widow, some of you may have even heard the term gaming widow. My wife, however, gets to be a YouTube widow, especially as I spend hours filming and editing content for you to enjoy. One of the coolest things that she's ever done, and she, herself, is not a gamer, happened on our wedding night. Get your head out of the gutter.
One of the things that she was adamant about was for me to have a groom's cake. I had no need or desire for one But she really wanted me to have one. I relented and let her do it, and what she did completely outdid anything that I could have expected.
While my wife is a kid or by trade she does not consider herself to be a baker. But she has many friends who are. So what she wound up doing was to get a friend of hers to make the groom's cake, but it was not just any groom's cake. It was an NES groom's cake. Complete with the proper branding, logos, and controller ports, it even had AV ports and an RF output on the back. The attention to detail here was superb. It was so good that my stepmother even asked me to move the video game off of the dessert table because we needed that for dessert stuff. I eventually had to explain to her that that was one of the desserts.
Four years since we've been married, 6 years since I really dedicated myself towards making this channel a go we are still going strong. The last year has definitely had its ups and downs. From losing our bestest boy Murphey Mayhem in January, helping our youngest as she started in her new school, dealing with sick parents, surgery, adding 2 new juvenile delinquents to the house, changing careers again, and going on far fewer adventures than we planned, there's no one I'd rather have by my side through it all. Here's the thing, I get to have my wife by my side, she's stuck with me! That seems unfair, but she signed the contract, to take backs!
To my amazingly supportive wife, I love you, happy anniversary, and I'm sorry that I'll probably be editing more videos coming up. In the end, she is the reason I can say I have Eaten an NES. I Did, You Just Take Small Bytes! Sorry not sorry for the dad joke.

Did The Super Nintendo Switch Online Controller Have A Hidden Home Button?
In this episode, we unbox and test out the Nintendo Switch Online controllers designed for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as I Finally Bought a Nintendo Switch Super NES Online Controller.
It's no secret that the Super NES is one of my favorite consoles, if not my favorite console of all time. The library of the games and the memories I have of playing it in high school are absolutely amazing. When I heard that Nintendo was going to release Super NES games to the Nintendo Switch through the Switch online service, I was sold. One of the interesting features is that they promised controllers dedicated to the specific systems available to Switch Online members. At $30 for a single controller, I had hesitated to purchase the Super NES one. After all, I had third-party alternatives that were good enough, right? Well, I finally pulled the trigger and dropped the 30 bucks, and let's see how it comes out of the box.
Similar conceptually to the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Genesis Switch Online controllers, the Super NES controller is only available as a single unit in a package. Inside the box, you will get the controller itself and a nice, durable Nintendo USB-A to USB-C cable. Unlike the NES online controller which came out previously, you cannot charge the super NES controllers by sliding them into the rails on the Nintendo Switch, you HAVE to plug them in via USB cable.
The overall design and layout are virtually identical to the original Super NES controller. The face buttons are the same concave and convex design as the original, the d-pad is the same size, the shoulder buttons are the same size, and they also added a ZL and ZR button closer to the center line of the controller. In the middle of the top of the controller you have a USB-C charging port, and the bottom of the controller features your pairing button, along with player indicator LED lights.
Pairing to my Super Mario Nintendo Switch OLED was super easy. I used another controller to navigate to the controller screen, selected change grip order, and entered the pairing mode on the controller. With a quick press of the L & R shoulder buttons, I was paired. Pretty easy!
What is one of the cool things that Nintendo has done with their Switch online controllers is when you use them and launch a Switch Online service game that is compatible you get different audio cues. The same is true of the Super Nintendo controller, and in fact the background on the menu changes from red to gray and purple to match the Super NES color scheme. It's the subtle things that make it worthwhile.
Diving into the Super NES online, I started a game of Super Mario World. I know this game extremely well and everything functioned exactly like it should. Button presses were great, the d-pad felt really good, and overall I was very pleased with the results. I also played Star Fox, Yoshi's Island, and others with similar experiences.
I played a few additional Super NES online games with it, but then I decided to test out some other titles that weren't a part of the Super NES online catalog. I've had issues with button mappings in the past for these games, but I was pleasantly surprised here. Street Fighter 2 Turbo was fantastic, as was Castlevania 4 in the Castlevania collection. literally, everything that I played was terrific that could be played with a Super NES controller. One bummer, however, is the fact there is no dedicated home button. So if you're playing something other than a switch online game you have no way to get back to the main menu.
Why it RoX:
- Virtually identical and design to the original
- Great functionality and responsiveness
- Only $30
- Unlocks special menu noises and switch online games
- Good battery life
What could be improved:
- Cannot be charged on the Switch itself
- Only sold in single packs
- Must be a Switch Online member to order
- No dedicated home button
- Only available online
Should you buy one?
If you're a fan of the Super Nintendo like I am, and if you are a Switch online member then what are you waiting for? I'm kicking myself that I waited so long to finally pick one of these up. This is a damn fine controller and Nintendo has knocked this one out of the ballpark. My few complaints and things I wish could be improved are more gripes and# Super NES Online Controller, it's so good.

I Just Scored One Of My Favorite Retro Gaming Pickups EVER!
It's not every day that I get to add one of my most sought-after items to my video game collection, but I was able to do that. In Bloomington, Illinois, is The Item Shop. This is a retro video game store that features a ton of excellent items. I was in here a few weeks ago to talk to them about a few other things, and I noticed something that I had to come back and get. What was it? Well it was one of my favorite retro gaming pickups ever, we managed to get R.O.B. the Robot from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, and it's mostly complete.
I never really owned a R.O.B. back in the day. How can you never really own something? You either own it or you don't, right? Well, before I actually had an NES, one of my middle brother's friends lent us his NES for over a year. And he had R.O.B. the Robot that he lent us at the same time. I got to mess around with it quite a bit, I played quite a bit of Gyromite with it, but when I had to give the system back to my brother's friend he also took R.O.B.. When I finally got my NES, it was the Challenge Set that did not feature R.O.B. the Robot.
This R.O.B. does have some yellowing, one of the battery contacts needs to be cleaned up, and the labels on top of the gyro spinners are bubbling. But for a 40-year-old toy, this is in pretty beautiful condition. I don't have a CRT to play him on, so what I may end up doing is simply cleaning him up for display, because he won't work on a modern flat panel.
In addition to R.O.B., The Item Shop had a number of other excellent-looking items. They had the very first issue of Nintendo Power, an AV Famicom (which I absolutely want both of these). They had a number of great handheld games too, including Metroid Zero Mission. I always think it's cool when I see them having manuals for people to purchase as well, this way they can complete their collection.
One of the cool things about Ryan from The Item Shop is the fact that he also puts on the Illinois Game Con. Located at the Interstate Center in Bloomington Illinois, we have been there as a vendor for the last 3 years, and we will be there June the 1st, 2024. Mark your calendars as this is going to be a tremendous event you will not want to miss.

TRIGGER WARNING! 3 Video Game Hot Takes That May Shock You!
I have plenty of gaming takes that, well, they're not exactly mainstream. Generally, I wouldn't say I like RPGs, I'm not big into first-person shooters, I think Zelda: Breath of the Wild is vastly over-rated, and I hate most early XBox controllers. But a post from @PKInTheUniverse got me thinking about a few other possible controversial takes I have about different things in gaming. So let's take a look at these Video Game Hot takes, but a trigger warning, these may shock you.
Number 3:
Mario Kart Double Dash is the Best, Most Innovative Mario Kart Game Ever Made!
Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 and 8 Deluxe on the Wii U and Switch, but something about the driver-swap feature changed the dynamic immensely for me. You could be more strategic about when and how you use weapons, and different pairings deliver different handling characteristics. Other games may look better, but Double Dash is the GOAT.
Mario RPG Isn't A Mainline Mario Game
This is the post that PK shared that influenced this short. He shared a meme that he believed that while Mario Wonder is a great game, "real" Mario Fans now have the stage as Mario RPG is being remastered for the Switch. Nintendo didn't have much to do with the original development of Mario RPG, it was Square who did. Honestly, I think you could swap all the Mario characters out with any generic RPG characters, replace the Mushroom Kingdom with and generic fantasy world, and you have basically the same game.
While Both are Underrated, the Wii U Is Superior to the Sega Dreamcast
I've talked about my dislike for the Dreamcast controller, it's right up there with my dislike for the Xbox Duke Controller, but my statement is about more than the controller. I think the library is without a doubt much better on the Wii U than the Dreamcast's library. It's just so much deeper! Look at all the most-loved Switch Games! They're from the Wii U! If you like fighters, the DC has something, sure, but the depth just isn't there.
Which of these, if any, do you agree with? Let me know what you think in the comments!

An Ultra Switch Pro Controller?!? BinBok Ultra Pro Controller Review
In this episode, we unbox and test out the Binbok Ultra Pro Controller designed for the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Windows, Android, and Mac.
When it comes to the Nintendo Switch, there's no shortage of controller options out there. Binbok has been busy for years making excellent third-party joy-con replacements, and in recent years they've also made full-fledge controllers. What we have here today is what they are calling the Ultra Pro controller, it has a number of unique features all under the hood.
This is one of the most versatile controllers when it comes to connectivity I've ever seen. It works with Bluetooth wireless, and USB wired, but also includes a 2.4GHz dongle, so you can use it with Mac and PC. While I did not test it I would imagine that you could even use it on the Switch itself, but I've never personally felt a big latency difference between Bluetooth and 2.4GHz.
There are a ton of programmable features. You can turn the Six-Axis gyroscopic mode on and off, there is a zero deadband mode and a high precision mode. You also have programmable L4 and R4 triggers at the top of the controller. I don't know that I would find these comfortable to use but they are there. There's a series of LED lights around the controller itself, and I have to say this is one of the easiest controllers to adjust LED lighting that I've ever utilized. It has a dedicated light button!
I did my testing with my Super Mario Edition Nintendo Switch OLED that we recently unboxed as this has been my Switch of choice lately. Sometimes on third-party controllers pairing can be hit or miss, some requiring you to actually connect the controller to the Switch via USB cable, while others pair perfectly via the pairing button. I'm pleased to say pairing was a breeze, all I had to do was move the system selector switch to switch mode, hit the pairing button, and then hit the L & R triggers to initiate pairing.
While many controllers have gone the route of utilizing hall effect sensors, the Ultra controller uses traditional potentiometers. I thought the sticks felt smooth, and Binbok even included extra caps for those who would like to customize the feel. I stuck with the stock ones as they were pretty comfortable for me. The d-pad is a bizarre sort of design. It almost reminds me of the D-pad on the Genesis, but even that isn't accurate. It's almost as if the d-pad is itself on an analog potentiometer similar to the sticks.
The A/B/X/Y buttons are actually micro switches,. They felt precise, they also felt like there was a little bit of extra resistance to them. Not saying that was a good thing or a bad thing, it was just a thing. I, personally am not a huge fan of micro switches simply because of the noise they make, but these were definitely very functional.
Getting into gameplay, I started out on Super Mario 3D World as I've been playing that quite a bit with my youngest daughter lately. I was able to traverse around the world beautifully, every button press and trigger movement responded exactly as it should, and I was able to precisely walk around the world.
From here I fired up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and put the gyroscope controls to their test. I will tell you I was very successful in using them. I felt stupid flailing my arms around staring, drifting, counter steering, but I was able to get around the track with the motion controls!
Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Edition is where I ran into a few issues with the control. I was able to pull off the spinning sidekick and the Hadouken, but I could not pull off the Shoryuken consistently with either the d-pad or the analog stick. I tried on a couple different versions of Street Fighter as well as sometimes I can go through the motions too quickly and it doesn't register the inputs. No matter what, it was consistently inconsistent.
Why it RoX:
- Feature packed
- Excellent rumble
- Easy to adjust LED lighting
- Built in turbo
- Textured grip
- USB-C
What could be improved:
- Not all effect sensors
- D-pad could use some work
- I'm not a fan of microswitches
- Not a huge price difference between this and the OEM pro controller
Should you buy one?
I will say if Hall effect sensors are not a big thing to you, there's a lot to like here about the Binbok Ultra Pro controller. The extra features that it has packed in are really nice, but will you use them all? That's what you have to decide. I never really came around to liking the D-pad, I just disliked it less. The analog stick did not seem like it could keep up with fast-paced movements very well and Street Fighter, but for standard platformers, puzzlers, and action-adventure games it should be just fine. At $57, you're less than $13 away from a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, so you have to decide whether or not having all the extra features is worth sacrificing a little bit in terms of the d-pad and the analog stick performance.

Are You Even A Retro Gamer If You Never Did THIS In Tecmo Bowl On NES?
One of the greatest games of all time for the Original Nintendo Entertainment System had to be Tecmo Bowl. You had all the teams from the NFL at the time, even with player names and numbers. As a child of the '80s, I loved Tecmo Bowl because my team of choice, the Chicago Bears, was amazing in this game. One of the things I loved to do was something that, if you didn't do yourself, can you even call yourself a retro video gamer if you never did THIS?
Just like in actual football, Tecmo Bowl mixed up running and passing plays. While Walter Payton wasn't in the game, Chicago still had a great running back at the time. They also had a certain Punky QB, aka Jim McMahon. McMahon was many things, a cannon-armed quarterback wasn't one of them. But, there was a trick in Tecmo Bowl that would make it look like he was the precursor to Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers, and that was the Tecmo Bowl Deep Fade!
See, with only 4 plays on offense and defense to choose from, the defense would select what specific play to defend. As such if you chose the wrong play you could get burned, or really, really burned. If you chose a running play to defend and the other team ran to the other side of the field, they'd get a decent gain. Now if the defense selected to defend a run and it was a pass play, there could be some real fireworks!
On these blown coverage plays, you can see where the defenders are in relation to your wide receivers via an arrow. If your deep threat was undefended, you could just fade way back with your quarterback until you were about to get sacked, throw the ball at the last minute, and have a super crazy deep pass and completion! This was something that was literally indefensible as I would Super Bowl Shuffle all the way to the end zone!!
I did this all the time and won many a game thanks to it. Did you ever do this trick? Did you ever get mad when someone would do it to you? Let me know in the comments!

Super Mario World is a Halloween Must Play Game? ABSOLUTELY!
I will admit that Halloween is not one of my favorite times of the year. As such, I'm kind of particular in the Halloween-themed games that I play each October. As such, I wanted to share some of my favorite games to play around Halloween with you. I don't dig a ton of blood, guts, and gore, but one game I get gleeful delight from every time I play, and a game I consider one of the Must-play games to play for Halloween is Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo (or Super Mario Bros 4 for the Super Famicom).
I know what many are thinking. How in the world is Super Mario World a Halloween game? Well there are a few ways in which Super Mario World actually fits the Halloween theming perfectly. First of all, we have ghost houses. I mean are there characters that go with Halloween much more than Ghosts? Boo isn't just any Ghost either, he actually is rather shy and turns away when you look at him. There are also Boo Buddies, Big Boo, Boo Buddy Block, Boo Buddy Snake, Boo Crew, Fishin' Boo, and Eerie. These are all amazing ghost characters that are sprinkled all around the game.
There's also the ghost house itself, a sort of haunted house which are also placed all around the world. The Ghost Houses may look innocent enough, but it is incredibly haunted. So much so that Mario's trusty companion, Yoshi, won't even go inside!
Finally, there's the Pumpkin Jumping Piranha Plant and the Pumpkin Jumping Fire Piranha Plant. These are sprite swaps that you unlock once you beat the game. It is a fun and cute addition to the game, along with the Mario-headed Koopa Troopas you also unlock when you beat the game.
Super Mario World isn't just a great game to play around Halloween, it's simply one of the greatest games ever created in my opinion. As such I will always look for any reason to sing its praises.

Giving Mario Wonder For Christmas? 3 Mario Games to Play While Waiting
One of the hardest struggles as a parent who plays video games is having to wait to play a game you know you're either giving or receiving as a gift. At our house, we know that we're going to give our youngest a copy, along with her first Switch. That being said I can't buy a copy or play it now because, well, reasons. If you are giving or receiving a copy of Mario Wonder for Christmas what 3 Mario games should you play while waiting 2 months. Let's take a look.
Number 3:
Super Mario Bros
The original Super Mario Bros is an absolute classic and many of the different ways we play now can be traced back to the original. From the gameplay basics, powering up, avoiding enemies, and more, the original Super Mario Bros provides a great foundation to start with.
Number 2:
Super Mario World
Not only my favorite Mario game but quite possibly my favorite game of all time, Super Mario World (in Japan it was also called Super Mario Bros 4) has some of the best of the entire series. We get new power-ups, new suits, and a new friend in Yoshi to help us through the Mushroom Kingdom, there is nothing about this game I don't love. And you should too!!
Number 1:
Super Mario 3D World
My youngest LOVES this game, from the Cat Suit, the music, the adventure, but I think mostly because I can carry her character around and make up for some of her lack of skill as a game player. That's right, I have literally carried Princess Peach around as Mario in Super Mario 3D World to help my youngest feel like she's "Playing". I quite enjoy 3D World myself, I actually own the original on the Wii U, and I think this will be our most-played mainline Mario game we play until Christmas when I, erm, I mean she, gets it under the same Christmas Tree I got my NES under all those many years ago when I was a kid.
What about you? Are you a gamer parent who also has to wait? Let me know how you're going to cope in the comments!
