How An Electrician Installs A Bathroom Exhaust Fan
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
A ceiling exhaust fan in a bathroom minimizes humidity, improves air circulation, and provides an added sound barrier for privacy. Admittedly, there is a wide variety of exhaust fans including lighting, speakers, and even smart home virtual assistants these days, but in this video we’ll stick to the basics. Compared to most electrical installations, mounting a fan requires more attention to weight, ducting, and room size, but is electrically very similar. Feel free to pre-watch, re-watch, or co-watch this video with your project!
Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
TelaTrades Beta:
You’ve heard of TelaDocs giving you access to medical experts from the comfort of your own home, now get a licensed electrician on the phone to help with a house project or relevant business inquiry. EPro’s own Joel Walsman is available for any question, with complete transparency & full-bodied advice for the electrical business owner, small electrical contractor, and DIYer alike. Get the certainty of a pro’s past experience, present eye looking over your shoulder, and knack for the future!

Synopsis:
Unlike the average white collar professional who works for one boss or needs to re-sell themself to a new job market, electricians have a strong voice in determining which general contractor they will work for, if any at all! There is a wide spectrum of general contractors in the workforce and aligning yourself as a subcontractor with the right ones will pay dividends in work satisfaction, profitability, simplicity, and dignity. In this video, Joel Walsman will share his observations of good and bad contractors throughout his 15-year career, the little clues to big inefficiencies, and how to diversify your workload to ensure peace and stability.
Though targeted more to the electrical business owner, we think these recommendations and points of professionalism are employable by electrical masters, journeymen, & apprentices alike.

Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to Make Real Money
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Electric Pro Academy was born in downtown Indianapolis as Jefferson Electric CEO Joel Walsman prepared for a nationwide master electrician workforce nosedive. For a job that technically requires zero education or prior experience, we believe the educational landscape for electrical apprentices is too complex, theoretical, and impractical. We've sought to give a clear window into typical residential electrical work to educate and entertain viewers into joining the force! We welcome your feedback and hope you'll subscribe and follow along with us.

Upgrade Your Fluorescent Lights To Wafer LEDs
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Work-From-Home life has so many benefits and oddities! If you’re like us, that beloved family of yours welcomed group lunchtime and extra hugs and smooches, but then subsequently voted your new “office” into an alcove in the basement with no windows, that damp concrete smell, & buzzing, fluorescent lighting. Well… we can fix one of those problems!
In this video, Joel is upgrading fluorescents to recessed LED wafer lights in a master closet. Wafer lights are different from can lights in that they don’t require any ceiling clearance, making them better suited to remodel projects. In addition to an updated aesthetic, the upgrade to LED lighting will greatly reduce this homeowner’s energy and maintenance costs, and provide truer color accuracy for picking out the day’s outfit. We welcome you to follow along.

Are you an electrician who seems to be wearing the “businessman” hat more than you anticipated? Are customer interactions wearing down your patience and energy with your team? Are you disqualifying any of your customers before you write a contract? Are you disqualifying half of them? We hope so.

In this video, Joel talks about his transition from apprentice to electrical business owner, and the standards which give him and his team peace in job selection & coordination. 120 Year-Old Building Electrical Tour
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
As a life-long electrician, Joel’s seen a lot of unique electrical devices and practices, but nothing quite like the relics found in the 120 years-old Neidhammer building in Indianapolis. Inside are several large lighting control devices that are a welcome invitation into the electrical past of the area. We’d welcome historians’, experts’ & hobbyists’ input in figuring out how these massive obelisks may have served a 19th century venue.
There’s also some work to be done to air-block the updated electrical panel in the basement, which is a simple fix that takes just 2 tools. If you’re experiencing irregularities or corrosion in your panel, residential or commercial, this is a quick fix that you’ll definitely want to find time for!

Understanding Your Electrical Home Inspection
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
“Joel, you cite a different National Electrical Code reference every video! How can I, as a homebuyer, know enough to dialogue with my inspector?”
Given that buying a home is the largest financial decision a person can make, it’s wise to educate yourself on the common processes and on some red flags. In this video, Joel reviews an EPRO teammates recent home project and the various electrical elements in a home inspection that should and shouldn’t cause alarm, or at least consideration. We hope this can be a helpful negotiation tool for our viewers who want to flip an old home on a budget.

Replacing My Floor Outlet Receptacle
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Some DIYers and handymen can bypass key safety measures without realizing (and some realize it but do it anyway!). A pretty frequent culprit of neglect is floor-mounted outlet receptacles. While it might seem like the same old boxes and devices can fit in the floor just as easily as they fit in the wall, the key difference is weight-ratings. Floor-mounted receptacles are specifically designed to withstand heavy load, which protects inhabitants from shock and arc hazards.
Joel wears his husband, dad, and electrician hats in this video as he upgrades an out-of-code floor-mounted receptacle with a proper floor-rated outlet receptacle in his own home. Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

Protecting My Whole Home From Electrical Surge
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Do you find yourself replacing light bulbs too often? Are you worried about your TV & appliances operating correctly for their full life? Have you noticed that your phone & computer batteries have drained significantly, despite constant charging? All of these things may be good reasons for a whole home surge protector.
In this video Joel will demonstrate 2 types of surge protectors that install directly into a home’s electrical panel to provide protection for all circuits. This is a home upgrade with significant long-term benefit, especially in tandem with surge protector strips in outlet receptacles throughout the home.
Though step-by-step and widely available, we’d rank this as an intermediate-level DIY project due to the discomfort of some when working in their electrical panel. We hope to relieve your stress during and after the installation!

Replacing My Whole Electrical Panel
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Joel and his family recently moved into a 1938 home in Indianapolis, Indiana. Unfortunately, they bought the property knowing that many electrical upgrades would need to be made, but fortunately, Joel was up to the challenge and willing to bring viewers along. In this video, Joel will be replacing one of several out-of-code electrical sub-panels throughout the home. He’ll run into several electrical issues, dated practices & components, and nightmares including back-fed neutral current, BX wiring, tinned copper, narrow stud cavities, wire connections in the panel, grounding circuits through conduit, AFCI breakers, and more! While our content is mostly targeted to electrical apprentices, we hope it can be helpful to DIYers, hobbyists, & home project enthusiasts as well.

Wiring An Outdoor AC Unit
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Utility equipment may seem like a daunting DIY task, but with the exception of larger wire gauge, wiring an outdoor AC unit is little different than wiring a light switch. Mounting the components will differ from case-to-case, but in this video Joel will demonstrate how to mount an AC disconnect to brick, run THHN wire through PVC liquid-tight conduit, and make all the necessary electrical connections. Along the way he’ll make recommendations and point out professional details employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices that give lifelong certainty to the integrity of the job.
