Setting Up Wires for Switches in a 3 Gang Switch Box
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
Residential New work 3 gang switch box wire setup
- Hot feed black wire is marked with colored tape (NOT white, grey, or green per code)
- All hot feed conductors are stripped extra long
- Make sure that the wiring for each switch postiion is located in the corresponding knockout in the box - don't zigzag or cross wires in the box if possible, it makes a mess.
Generally the first switch should be the main light, second switch the accessory lights, and third switch the ceiling fan.
- Start by routing all grounding conductors to a common location to be mechanically connected by twisting them in a clock-wise direction, then cutting and removing the excess and installing a green grounding wire nut with a hole in the top for passing the grounding pigtail. Keep twisting the wire nut until the grounding wires are well twisted.
- White conductors are not always neutral conductors - if they are not neutral they must be marked accordingly.
- Tuck the wires vertically into their corresponding switch positions and overlay the hot feed power line over the other conductors horizontally.

Installing a Temporary GFCI
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
Installing a temporary GFCI for job site power supply.
Wiring details:
- Black, flagged wire (hot) to "line" in side of the GFCI, line neutral to the line side silver screw.
- Load black wire to load side gold screw, load neutral to load side silver screw.
- Ground to green ground screw
- Apply three wraps of electrical tape around the screws for temporary installation where a face plate will not be installed
Marking and labeling wires correctly for easy identification on finish out. Finishing out a new build electrical installation happens after drywall and painting. The electrician comes back to the job site and terminates all the sockets, switches, and light fixtures. Correct wire labeling is a must for a quick and easy finishout without having to trace down and trouble shoot each electrical box.

Terminating Wire in a Round Box
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
- After running wires the job site is turned over to drywall and paint. If you don't correctly manage your wires inside the box it is highly probable that the drywall installers will tear up your wires with their wallzip tools. Then on finishout you will have to spend more time repairing and possibly even re-running wire wasting your time and money
- Leave 9 inches of cable inside the box.
- Fold don't stuff your wires

Install gang box level and in the wall plane for a clean and easy finish-out.
Leave a 7 inch service loop.
If the box has a clamp the wire should be supported within 12 inches (of wire) from the box exit. Install the wire staple closer than 12" to account for the service loop length.
