Troubleshooting Confused Light Switches
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
For those hoping to see inside the mind of a master electrician as he visualizes and manipulates wire behind finished walls and between floors with x-ray precision, prepare to be…
…disappointed. While EPRO exists to make “electrical best practice” readily accessible for the good of the trade and future generations, we have to admit that we’re hoping to make our lives a little easier, too. Join us on the wrong side of the drywall, fidgeting with confused three-way switches and scratching our heads attempting to achieve functionality and safety, as Joel asks himself: “Why is a downstairs living room switch operating an upstairs bedroom?!” If you’re considering some electrical “exceptions” in your own home, please watch and learn what questionable wiring choices can mean for future residents and servicemen. At the same time, here’s a few ideas and diagnostic tools to consider if you’re in our position.
…Better yet, get a 15-year professional electrician’s expertise directly via video or voice call to overcome your home project obstacle! EPro’s own Joel Walsman is available for any electrical question, with complete transparency & full-bodied advice for the seasoned or novice DIYer here: https://electric-pro-academy.square.site/

Installing A Receptacle For Any Major Electrical Appliance
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
At EPRO, we have fond childhood memories of grabbing a box of popsicles from the basement freezer on a hot summer day, or bringing the clean laundry basket up those treacherous wooden stairs…. Ok, maybe not the latter, but as adults, we recognize the value of keeping a handful of major appliances down in the basement: Backup fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, sump pump, etc.
Today, Joel needs to get power to his home’s water softener. The process, code requirements, and materials will be nearly identical for any of the appliances referenced above, so if you feel handy enough to do it yourself, we think we can walk you through it!
Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.
If you’ve got the tools and the willingness but are held up by a couple ominous details, rather than hiring out the whole project, we’d love to give you personalized expertise via video or voice call to overcome your home project obstacle. EPro’s own Joel Walsman is available for any electrical question, with complete transparency & full-bodied advice for the seasoned or novice DIYer.

Full Hot Tub Electrical Install - Start To Finish
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
You called, we answered: A hot tub installation is one of the most requested videos from our viewers, so we were excited when church friends gave us the green light to film the process at their home. While we will be showing everything step-by-step, we need to stress that our definitive recommendation is that a professional perform this installation because hot tubs 1) have high power draw, 2) are full of WATER which pairs very harmfully with electricity, 3) require mastery of indoor and outdoor electrical and building codes, & 4) are an expensive investment that we do not want to be held responsible for! If you’ve got the tools and the willingness to attempt this behemoth, but would like some “targeted expertise” without hiring out the whole project, Joel Walsman can be contacted directly via video or voice call through this link: https://electric-pro-academy.square.site/. Otherwise, we welcome your thoughts on this latest high-power episode at EPRO!

Hot Tub Electrical - Code Minimum
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
There are 2 types of hot tubs: The warm, refreshing variety and the more jolting & shocking kind. If you are planning to wire up your own hot tub there are 5 key code references which will inevitably ramp up the cost of the project materials and require some location planning, so keeping them front of mind can alleviate significant stress at the end of the project. While our other hot tub videos (including our own) will provide more step-by-step instructions for the electrical, this one is a quick-hitter for those who already have the mechanical skills and knowledge, but may lack NEC experience.

Your Office Space Needs LED Panels
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Retrofitting LED tubes into fluorescent fixtures is often a worthwhile investment (we’ve done it previously on this channel!), but another option are LED panels, which replace the entire fixture in indoor settings. In this video we’ll show you how to swap out the old for the new and save yourself long-term money in energy costs, maintenance, and repairs. We’ll be utilizing the existing MC cable in the ceilings, but you can use non-metallic Romex in a similar fashion.
Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

Installing LED Tube Lighting In Metal Framing
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.

The Jefferson Electric Off-Grid Warehouse needed some light, so we installed 8’ LED tube lights in fluorescent fixtures and thought we’d bring you all along. Given the metallic structure of the shop, we’re using MC cable and being especially mindful of our grounding practices. If you’re curious about what it takes to mount fixtures to metal struts, calculate continuous loads for proper circuit sizing, or when to call for an extra hand, this video is for you.

We're Getting Ready For Your Tiny Home
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
While Romex works great for interior residential work, metallic structures often require metallic boxes and cabling. As we outfit the Off-Grid warehouse behind the new HQ we’ll show you how to select and prepare the right materials, run MC cable, ground everything properly, & accomplish all of your power needs. If you’ve got a shop, garage, or other metallic structure that needs a more commercial finish, we hope this video shows you what you need to see from main panel, to sub-panel, to receptacle.
For Jefferson Electric’s Off-Grid needs, our circuitry will be overpowered in order to increase mobility, modularity, and power in day-to-day operations. Feel free to scale down to your needs if you are in a smaller and/or DIY space.
Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

Rewiring A Kitchen With An Extra Light
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Sometimes the customer is right! These recent customers had functional kitchen lighting, but its aesthetic characteristics were lacking: Color temperatures were different, switch locations were odd, and the distribution of light was not optimal for working at the counters or filling the room. They requested recessed lighting and needed a pendant light mounted that they’d matched to the breakfast nook. From there, we just did what we were told!

Should I keep using broken drill bits or saws?
#Shorts
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Should I keep using broken drill bits or saws? Can I recommission them for other use? The short answer is no. We unashamedly develop relationships with our tools, but construction & the trades, as an industry, realy so heavily on their functionality that keeping damaged parts around threatens worker safety, work efficiency, and functional profit. Give that 10 year-old bit a proper send off and then enjoy your next upgrade.
Want to be in a YouTube Short? Send us your electrical questions in 10 seconds or less and we’ll splice in a master electrician’s less than 50 second answer (as best as we can). If this short is unclear or skew to what you are looking for, feel free to comment below for additional assistance. Got a question or ideas for a future video? Estimating for developers is an almost entirely different ballgame than estimating for homeowners due to the very different working conditions and administrative tasks required, and the large & future scale of such work. We’ll walk through this one together and breakdown our biggest considerations.

Correcting An Electrical Commercial...Residence?!?
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:

Not only did Jefferson identify the anomaly, which was missed by an inspector and an engineer, but they were also tasked with remediating the issue and upgrading the service to 400-amps for this large home with electric vehicle charging needs. Here’s how the pros safely fix a high-power, utility-related situation with efficiency & thoroughness.

Installing Residential Solar In One Day
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
We experimented with our filming style in this one a bit. Not sure we love it… Let us know your honest feedback in the comments!
Jefferson Electric knocks out most of its solar installations in one day; but don’t be fooled, it takes a large team of diverse electricians to make it happen. Installing the solar array requires precision measurement to provide a crisp finish and lots of team coordination & muscle to get unruly, window-sized panels to their spots on the roof. Trenching and long, underground wire runs require knowledge of the National Electrical Code and skill in minimally invasive landscaping. Connecting power to the inverters and electrical panel inside the home requires technical training and wisdom dealing with high-voltage DC power from solar. Here’s how we break up those responsibilities at Jefferson and joyfully provide sustainable power for the Indianapolis region.
While we don’t endorse this video as instructional or educational, we do hope it informs viewers of the full scope of solar work and the costs and skills required to do it well.
Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

0079 Adding external disconnect
Electric Pro Academy - Real skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment purposes only and should not be attempted by homeowners, DIYers, or other electricians without utility permission. Doing so may result in fines in many jurisdictions.
There are 2 main reasons or advantages to having an external electrical disconnect: 1) According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the main electrical panel of the home should be in close proximity to the entrance of the electrical utility service; however, if this is not possible, a main disconnect needs to be installed in a readily accessible place near the utility service. 2) An external disconnect enables the homeowner to cut off power to the main panel lugs, which would otherwise remain energized and dangerous even if the main breaker was turned off inside the panel. This can give greater peace of mind for future panel servicing.
In this video, Joel will safely install an external electrical disconnect in a historic home’s operational electrical system, due to a code violation identified by a modern inspector long after the installation. Within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.
