Water Heater and Sump Pump Outlets
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Joel takes a look at some heavy-load, water-related equipment: Water heaters & sump pumps. These kinds of equipment require a dedicated receptacle and GFCI protection for safety purposes. In some cases, fully-electric, heavy-load equipment may require a 30-amp feed and thicker wire gauge from the electrical box. Be sure to install a water level and power failure monitor for appliances that pose a flood risk.

Basement Electrical - Code Minimum
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Joel walks through the living spaces and unfinished spaces of a newly constructed home, clarifying the electrical needs of each space. The NEC makes more of its distinctions based on the presence of certain equipment, water, or foot traffic in a room or space, rather than the location in the house. This is particularly true in a basement, where the amount of finishing will vastly change the electrical requirements.
Joel will also include some recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

Outdoor Power - Code Minimum
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
Synopsis:
Joel gives a look inside a project assignment at Jefferson Electric before breaking down outdoor electrical code.
JE recommends thorough front-end communication and access to a communication software that allows for on-site feedback and leadership trust & mobility amongst multiple job sites. A team should be a body of different parts that value and honor one another equally.
The codes for outdoor spaces are often dependent on landmarks, like the front door and the AC unit; however, it is always important to remember that the code represents a minimum requirement, not necessarily optimal accessibility. If considering extensive yard lighting, pool equipment, a patio with electric cooking appliances, or other outdoor scenes, make sure to reach out to a local professional for power recommendations.

Three Way Switch Wiring
Electric Pro Academy - Real Skills to make real money.
• Before getting into the wiring check that the power it turned off using a non-contact voltage tester (link below). Make sure to test the tool on a known live circuit right before testing the wires to be worked.
• In switching applications the white wire isn't always a neutral wire. If it is part of the switched hot it must be "durably marked" generally with a flag of colored electrical tape (red, blue, brown, black, yellow are all acceptable).
• Mechanical connectors (crimp sleeves, wire nuts etc) are required by code for all wire connections.
• Code requirement to clean off the conductors (stripped ends of the wire) - clean off paint or wall mud using the correctly sized hole in your stripping tool.
• Always use the screw tightened fittings on the switch, push in connectors are not quality connections - wrap the wire around the screw in a CLOCKWISE direction, so the tightening of the screw pulls the wrapped wire in tightly.
• Tuck and fold the wires into the wire box - watch the location of the grounding conductor and make sure that it doesn't get any where near the switch terminals or other bare conductors.
• Secure but don't over tighten the switch so that it deforms.
• Make sure the box is within 1/4" of the surface of the drywall.
• Install the switch cover - finish by orienting the screw slot in a consistent direction.
