I regularly feature products from LOTUS (Living Only Through Urban Sustainability) Farm and Garden in Asheville, NC in my videos. They are a family owned small shop in West Asheville that now has two other locations in Greenville, SC and Johnson City, TN.
https://lotusfarmandgarden.com
Some people drive 2 hours to see them because of the specialization of products they carry (like Dramm 1000 hole watering wands):
-Homesteading Supplies
-Organic & Non-GMO Animal Feed (New Country Organics and Sunrise)
-Soil Amendments
-Growing Media (Perlite, Vermiculite, Rice Hulls, Hydroton)
-Hydroponic Equipment
-Aquaponic Equipment
-Liquid Nutrition
-Garden Supplies
-MICROGREENS SUPPLIES
Most important, these guys have a vast breadth of knowledge in all manner of growing. You basically get free consultation information just by chatting with them.
Whenever I am turning over a garden bed and adding some trace minerals, fertilizer, or compost, this is where I go.
They have all the necessary equipment to start your own microgreen operation, minus the shelving unit.
If you are anywhere in the Western NC, Eastern TN, Northern GA, or Southern VA area, tell them you found them from Cultivated Change (or Alex Corey) and get
10% OFF YOU FIRST PURCHASE OF COMPOST/SOILS (and if they get to know you, they just start giving you random discounts ;)

I have mentioned this a couple times on Instagram, but this patch of butternut squash is out of control! I never reminder this crop vining for so long...it's literally overtaking entire beds in the garden. I will carve out a special spot for vining crops like this next year!

#resilience #microgreens #peashoots #tutorial
In this video, I go over a full week of growing pea shoots for indoor production in soil for harvesting on a consistent timeline. This is by far my favorite microgreen/shoot due to it's ease to grow and amount of food it produces. This crop is necessary if you are going start a microgreens farm. When I started growing I spent hours combing through the available video material to find seed densities, sanitization procedures, etc. I have attempted to answer all the questions I had when starting up growing on a small scale for radish, here. 7-10 days to food!
There are so many pea shoot varieties and everyone has their favorites and uses for specific purposes! We actually do multiple experiments with lights, varieties, and timelines here:
1. Growth speed difference of Speckled and Austrian Winter Pea
2. Growth speed difference with different amount of weight at germination
3. Growth speed difference with different light types (LED/Flourescents)

This is My Method for Flipping A Garden Bed in FULL | Tilthing, Amending, Composting, Seeding

#resilience #garden #bedprep #spring
This is my FULL PROCESS for turning a bed over from over-wintered cover crop to freshly seeded high rotation crop:
1. Turn under cover crop and remove any lingering root systems on surface
2. Amend (given in video) and till in a couple of inches deep
3. Level bed surface and remake edges of bed
4. Draw lines according to seed specifications
5. Seed and cover
6. Cover bed with protective fabric/netting (optional)
Everyone has their own way of prepping a bed but it's extremely contextual! I only have 600 sq ft to play with, so I have to sow relatively high turnover crops (short days to maturity - DTM.) Because of this, I am taxing the soil and pulling a lot out of it. My usual, generic bed prep:
1. Fertilizer (mild, slow release) 5-3-3
2. Calcium (usually alkalizing agent as well)
3. Long term phosphorus (rock phosphate)
4. Trace mineral source (usually potassium too)
5. Layer of compost to add organic matter (carbon)
These are different based off of what I've had in the beds and what I'm putting in the beds. There are some that don't get a ton of light so never get any heavy summer fruiting crops and don't need as much nitrogen or alkalizing agent.
This bed is baby root vegetables and spring greens, so not heavy feeders and I skipped the trace mineral source (because I ran out)and put less fertilizer on than I usually do. We should have greens in three weeks!

MICROGREEN MISTAKES | Sunflower Shoot Problems with Pressure and Heat | Learn from My Errors

#resilience #microgreens #sunflowershoots #heat
In my years growing Sunflower Shoots I have never run into this! I recently purchased another germination mat (heating pad) to put under a stack of sunflower to encourage prompt germination since they really like summer time root zone temperatures. I placed a stack of 3 sunflower shoots on it, with a paver on the top like usual. I didn't peek at the bottom tray like I usually do because I didn't want to disturb the seeds while germinating. Whoops!
When I uncovered them 4 days in, the bottom tray had a massive baked/moldy section in the middle, where the most pressure had been. That part of the tray was toast. Apparently the new heating pad puts out A TON OF HEAT. I had heard about this in a discussion between Donny Greens and Curtis Stone (The Urban Farmer) in a From the Field episode, but I had never encountered this. Don't let it happen to you! Test new products (especially from different manufactures) before using them in your production!

#resilience #garden #lights #spring
Continuing our Spring seeding series: we seeded our cold weather crops about 2 weeks ago. Some of the faster germinating crops (lettuce, kale) popped first and were already put under light and have been growing for a couple of weeks. Some of the Chard, Kale, and Peas have been being moved in and out of a small greenhouse outside every morning and evening.
It's been extremely cold at night and pretty cold and overcast during the day here in zone 6b/7a. The constant moving stresses the more slowly growing seedlings out and makes them more likely to become spindly and not as robust as we would like for when they go outside in a couple weeks.
My friends at LOTUS weren't using a pair of LumiGrow LumiBars and lent them to me. An extra shelf of artificial sunlight! These guys are bright!!! They are also programmable. Seedlings only need blue and white light (red for fruit/flower). We will see how this affects some of the more long term, formerly outdoor crops. Maybe they will go back outside next week with some sunshine.

#resilience #garden #mulching #weedsuppression
Most of the time the garden teaches you delayed gratification and patience. Today is probably the one thing that is instantly gratifying, MULCHING! This is definitely not the "permaculture" way to deep mulch, but I am renting this property so I don't do "do it once and never again" techniques because at any time I might have to lose all my hard work. That being said, I do like having the garden look clean. Although weed suppression is usually a futile effort, it's worth have the odds stacked in your favor at least for a little while.
It's easy enough to find cardboard and peel the tape off of it, and it will turn into mulch pretty quickly, so I do like layering types of mulch, and the mulch yard is about 5 minutes away from my house! Let's see how long this keeps the weeds at bay.
Happy Growing!

Rebuilding Soil for Seven Generations with Syntropics, Agroforestry, and Water w/AJ Olsen
AJ Olsen is the founder of Restructured Water Regeneration Australia. This Aussie born Sunshine Coast farmer is committed to rebuilding ecology and topsoil en-masse using syntropics, a form of agroforestry, and electrolyzed water.
Connect with AJ and RWR:
IG: https://www.instagram.com/aj_olsen1/
RWR: https://msha.ke/restructuredwaterregeneration
AJ was exposed to natural farming and permaculture techniques growing up in his family and found his current journey when he experienced a mature syntropic (rainforest) food forest. He employs medical-grade ionization and electrolyzed water machines to help Australian farmers move from industrial petrochemicals to chemical and contamination free farming practices.
The 7 water types generated by our Electrolyzed Reduced Water machines and water filters replace almost all need for Integrated Pest Management products, Herbicides, Fungicides, pH buffers, sanitization, disinfection, germination, and nutrient bioavailability products. In combination with regenerative land stewardship practices pulling from all culture's historical farming techniques, this presents a massive opportunity to avoid environmental contamination and set up thousands of acres to rebuild soil as quickly as possible.
He believes that a combination of a regenerative mindset, regenerative water, and regenerative soil building practices are necessary as a way to honor and return to Indigenous philosophy of land stewardship and sustainability for the next Seven Generations.
We touch on a little of everything in this podcast:
-What regeneration means to us
-Soil and Mycelial communication networks
-Degradation of Soil
-Market Gardening, Permaculture, Syntropics, Agroforestry, Microgreens
-Feeding and getting clean water to Southern India Ashrams
-Source water contamination & industrial accidents
-Indigenous ethos and philosophy
-Building human, ecosystem, and financial health simultaneously

Spring is upon us here in Zone 6b! A rash of really nice days motivated me to change my Pea trellis and make some new area! Peas are one of the easiest crops to grow (usually) - just put them 1-2" in some fertile soil and let nature do the rest!
I didn't use any fertilizer this year because I am using my own compost (unknown water soluble nitrogen content.) I applied fairly liberally.
I also decided to see how much difference soaking overnight has on germination or growth so we soaked some Sugar Daddy and Sugar Snap and are doing a comparison for unsoaked for a future video!

#resistancebands #train #homeworkout
I've had a number of requests for a resistance band workout for some of my clients to do at home when they don't have a ton of time and can't make it to the gym. We are using our trusty broken resistance band for this brutal 20 minute circuit.
Resistance Bands offer the benefit of constant, adjustable tension with multiple angles to target the muscles exactly how you want. Instead of "just moving weight" as you would with a machine or free weights even, you can focus on that peak contraction and really squeezing on each rep. It's like having a cable machine in your house! I was sore for 2 days after this (I also had to do some exercises 5 times to get my form right)
Adjust each exercise as you need to for your compensations and don't forget to brace your core!

Pain Education Podcast: Scoliosis as a Self-Correcting Mechanism - Detect, Manage, Posture
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine and affects 2-3 million people in the US. Did you know that you can develop Scoliosis (and lower back pain) through chronic tension patterns? Co-host Alex Corey was informed he had Grade 1 Scoliosis in his early 20s via an unrelated X-ray and has dealt with lower back pain when awareness slips from posture, mobility, and core strength ever since.
Join Alex Corey and Bill Parravano in discussing that Scoliosis can be derived from a tension pattern and the body's self-correcting mechanism to keep level eyes on the horizon, not just purely anatomical (distorted bone from birth)
In this episode, we discuss
How Scoliosis can originate via chronic automatic self-correcting mechanisms
Awareness and Self-Discovery as keys to empowering your body to recover
Practices and Modalities to discover tension patterns that may be showing up elsewhere in your body
Considerations for strength and conditioning or athletic training
Where the Allopathic Medical Model shines and abysmally fails
Mobility and Range of Motion as the most important factors in functional movement
Exercises/Techniques for Postural Correction

#resilience #microgreens #masterclass #broccoli
In this video, I go over a full seed to harvest cycle of growing organic broccoli, cabbage, and mustard microgreens for indoor production in soil for harvesting on a consistent timeline. This family (brassicae) of microgreens is one of the broadest and most widely used for growing different flavors, colors, and leaf structures.
Each variety requires experimenting to see how densely you can seed to get the most out of any tray without running into problems. When I started growing I spent hours combing through the available video material to find seed densities, sanitization procedures, etc. I have attempted to answer all the questions I had when starting up growing on a small scale for my commonly used brassicaes, here. 10 days to food!
My favorite varieties we cover in this video are:
1. Red Acre Cabbage: https://bit.ly/3cNT7xh
2. Di Ciccio Broccoli: https://bit.ly/3cCH2L2
3. Ruby Streaks Mustard: https://bit.ly/30U2K7Z

In this podcast, Alex Corey and Jamie Bennet of the Functional Wellness Collective dive through Jamie's 10+ plus year journey of experiencing the amorphous mysterious symptoms of Lyme disease since high school without a proper diagnosis. She went through almost every specialist imaginable and was diagnosed with Parkinson's, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and ALS before a random visit to get her husband's sudden Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever led their doctor to ask some very precise questions.
Jamie's perseverance to help herself and her children (who also received Lyme at birth) heal led her down the rabbit hole of learning how to help clients with other chronic inflammatory conditions such as Hashimotos, Mycotoxin (mold poisoning), and a range of other autoimmune conditions.
Jamie uses anti-inflammatory, low carb, gut-healing foods along with intermittent fasting, lifestyle, and mindset modifications, to make healing possible at a cost and pace for everyone. A Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, supplement specialist, dedicated wife, mother, and entrepreneur, for the past decade Jamie has devoted her life to helping people all over the world reclaim their health and learn to live again.

#plantstarts #fallgarden #roots #greens
Fall is another crazy time in the garden and I forgot to prep in July for it! Mid-August here in Zone 6b is the time to get all the heavy, long term brassicaes in (cabbage, broccolis, collards, kales, etc) and direct seed all that can be (carrots, beets, spinach, peas, lettuce.)
Roots and Greens Season, Part 2!
The only real difference between Spring and Fall is the type of crops due to the reduced daylight and colder nights on the tail end of the season. Choose "storage" type cultivars for beets and carrots and more cold hardy Spinach and Lettuces to get a couple extra weeks/months before everything freezes for the winter.

Have I been chatting with people about microgreens all wrong for this many years? I recently had a good number of people I see on a daily basis tell me the sole reason they don't eat as many vegetables that they think they should was because of the texture and strong flavors.
Could microgreens be the solution to this dilemma?

Remember to Do This Mid-Spring Step for Maximum Summer Tomato Yields!

#resilience #garden #stepup #tomatoes
When everything is growing in mid-Spring and the summer nightshades are getting overcrowded in their initial containers, take some time to step them up! I only seeded tomatoes and peppers for my nightshades this year, I don't like growing okra or eggplant and my other summer stuff will just be able to go right in the ground.
You can tell when something is ready by giving the base of the stem a little tug. You should be able to feel the entire root-ball come up with your pull. If it feels like something is going to rip, it's not ready!
I used Happy Frog potting soil from LOTUS in this video because I didn't have a ton of time. I would usually make a mix of pea, compost, and some long term fertilizer, but that's basically what Happy Frog is! When filling the trays, make sure to give the roots fresh soil on the bottom and sides (most important) to grow into. I had some concentrated Humic Acid lying around so I used that, but compost tea or just plain de-chlorinated water works as well! These guys will be ready to grow in the ground in about 3 weeks.
Happy Growing!

The great and powerful Dr. Steven Gundry and Sean Stevenson just sat down to chat about new research and massive studies regarding the microbiome and its control over your body.
At first this may seem disheartening - other organisms are dictating basic biologic processes within your body. - but then you realize you ARE IN COMPLETE control of your microbiome with your food and lifestyle choices.
Between studies coming out about EPIGENETICS and the MICROBIOME, there has never been a better time to be on a journey to Fundamental Health!

Regenerate Health and Wealth with Living Water | with Ashley DeMarco
When you think of the fundamental elements of life, what comes to mind? Sunlight, Oxygen, Energy, and WATER. My guest today is a Holistic Hydration Specialist who has found her path to radical health through this liquid essence of life.
Ashley S DeMarco has found her calling to revolutionize collective health, optimize time, regenerate her body on a cellular level, guide farmers towards sustainable and bio-available agriculture, and build communities that support each other to thrive.
Put more simply, she is here on a mission to help people and the planet return to origin. Water reminds us of "currentsea". It really is meant to flow in and out, just like the sea.
The community she is a part of is building the way forward that fuels the dreams and passions of so many amazing human beings.
We are part of a revolution to take back our freedom and sovereignty. We collectively get to create solutions for many of the worlds greatest problems.
One of the largest contributing factors to disease is environmental. There are so many toxins that you have to consciously choose to avoid every single day.
Drinking clean, Living water helps to balance the body, brain, hormones, emotions. It helps restore the body to origin. We are self healing. We have a choice every single day what we are consuming and what we are bathing in.

#resilience #microgreens #radish #tutorial
In this video, I go over a full week of growing non-gmo radish microgreens for indoor production in soil for harvesting on a consistent timeline. This is by far the easiest microgreen and necessary if you are going start a microgreens farm. When I started growing I spent hours combing through the available video material to find seed densities, sanitization procedures, etc. I have attempted to answer all the questions I had when starting up growing on a small scale for radish, here. 7 days to food!
There are so many radish varieties and everyone has their favorites and uses for specific purposes! We actually do multiple experiments with lights, varieties, and timelines here:
1. Growth speed difference of Red Arrow and Champion Radish
2. Growth speed difference with different amount of weight at germination
3. Growth speed difference with different light types (LED/Flourescents)
