Spring gardening has officially started! This video is a continuation of our last seeding video, filmed 2 days ago. We soaked the following seeds:
Sugar Anne Sweet Pea
Bloomsdale Spinach
Italian Giant Parsley
Spring Rapini Broccoli Raab
Enough taproots were visible where I was comfortable seeding them with some Mykos mycorrhizae inoculant
I also go over what I used for a germination/blackout chamber if you have shelving units and some black plastic lying around--helps to combat 30% humidity in my house!
These should germinate (hopefully) in a week and we'll check back then!

Growing Food Forest Abundance & Freedom | The New Model for Sovereignty w/Jim Gale
Jim Gale is the Chief Storyteller and fire behind Food Forest Abundance
They are building a new prototype of abundance and community just south of Orlando, FL on 50+ acres of private land that closely resembles my vision of heaven. The visionaries here are growing a massive network of support using permaculture principles to exist completely free of the matrix: growing food everywhere in natural cycles of the ecosystem, reclaiming earth-based education through Freedom Farm Academy, commerce via voluntary exchange, off-grid energy production, natural water systems, and human healing & regeneration. See the links below to connect with our vision

Grow Food Around Asheville, NC (Contact Me below)
I first learned of Food Forest Abundance in the summer of 2022 and Jim's passion for living freely and growing an insane amount of food reignited my drive to build a farm using permaculture and bio-dynamic growing principles.
Food security is the central aspect of any attempt at self-sufficiency or self-reliance and was the first true skill I traveled to learn in an attempt to be more sovereign and be less dependent upon government systems.
I had the pleasure of visiting Food Forest Abundance headquarters and seeing how this new model for a working community focused around food and freedom is being built from the ground up, starting by flying under a flag that we seldom see anymore.
Jim describes his journey exploring and living in multiple climates of the world and with multiple cultures, before finding the perfect slice of land in Central Florida to start building a decentralized center for human growth and flourishing using the principles of permanent agriculture, or permaculture outside of established government systems.
His dream is now very real with tour groups of 40-50 people and world leaders/visionaries in agriculture, military, economics, passionate about freedom for the future visiting everyday.

#21days #garden #growyourgreens
Lots of people talking about food shortages at the moment. This should encourage everyone to use WHATEVER space you have and GROW THE EXPENSIVE STUFF. Grow your greens! Let the farmers grow the bulky, cheap, hard to harvest stuff that takes months and lots of space (carrots, potatoes, onions, etc)
A 1 lb bag of seed may last 2 years if you aren't farming and will cost about $10-20 and give you salad for MONTHS OR YEARS.
All these are great and easy to grow in the fall:
-Spinach
-Kales
-Head Lettuce/Lettuce Mix
-Asian Greens (Pak/Bok Choi & Mizunas, etc)
Arugula
Have extra?? Start selling to your neighbors or trade for whatever you don't have (eggs, meat, milk, etc)
Gardening isn't just during the summer. Grow as long as you can!

How I Prep My Garden Beds for Spring Planting | Tests, Amendments, Crop Considerations

#resilience #garden #bedprep #spring
Continuing our Spring garden series: a nice afternoon had me inspired to start turning beds over since I won't be around next week when I would have time to do it. I have never actually done a pH test on this soil (rented land) so we go through doing a real basic one! You can find liquid or test strips at your local farm/garden store.
Everyone has their own way of prepping a bed but it's extremely contextual! I only have 600 sq ft to play with, so I have to sow relatively high turnover crops (short days to maturity - DTM.) Because of this, I am taxing the soil and pulling a lot out of it. My usual, generic bed prep:
1. Fertilizer (mind, slow release) 5-3-3
2. Calcium (usually alkalizing agent as well)
3. Long term phosphorus (rock phosphate)
4. Trace mineral source (usually potassium too)
5. Layer of compost to add organic matter (carbon)
These are different based off of what I've had in the beds and what I'm putting in the beds. There are some that don't get a ton of light so never get any heavy summer fruiting crops and don't need as much nitrogen or alkalizing agent.
Remember, ideal soil pH is 6.2 -6.5 (chart in video)
https://www.agrobest.com.au/news/How-Soil-pH-affects-availability-of-plant-nutrients-7.htm
Make sure you know what your tap is! Some people are surprised to find out that their municipal water is highly alkaline (not the best.)
Some people like to do their bed prep at the same time they seed, but I like to give all the amendments a head start so the plethora of microbial life gets to settle at the depth the root systems will be. This book changed my perspective on gardening:
https://www.workman.com/products/teaming-with-microbes
I don't finish the beds in this video because my compost is still pretty chilly and the video was long enough. Will do another one when I'm going to direct seed on March 1st!
Happy Growing!

FORGET THE MARKETING! Comparing pH, ORP, Ionization of the TOP "HEALTHY" Waters Out There
Do you think that fancy bottled mineral water is better for you than tap water?
Have you found better health stepping up your hydration game? Did you land on bottled water or Reverse Osmosis water and think that was good enough?
That's what most of us do, filter water at a basic water and call it good.
Join Ashley DeMarco and Alex Corey as we do a deep dive into the critical nature and electrical properties of our most precious resource, water.
We will be going over the fundamentals of hydration, why pH doesn't tell the whole story, and using a series of easy tests to compare the top mineral waters in the US to Living, Kangen (Electrolyzed Reduced) Water.
NOTE: Yes, we are aware that the ORP reading during the experiment are not absolute readings since we did not reset the meter to baseline with distilled water after each time. Give a +/- 50 mV margin of error with each reading as we also didn't let the probe sit for 1 min in each solution. You will also see why it doesn't matter :)

Microgreens Masterclass | Common Varieties | Full Week of Growing - What I Wish I Had When I Started
In this video, I go over a full week of growing microgreens for indoor production in soil for harvesting on a consistent timeline. When I started growing, I spent hours combing the internet for specific processes that were missing (seed densities, soil types, lighting types) from most people's videos (excluding expensive online courses, which have their place.) I have attempted to answer all the questions I had when starting up growing on a small scale.
We go over the most commonly grown varieties: Pea Shoots, Sunflower Shoots, Radish, and Brassicaes (broc, cabbage, chois) and the various pressures each has and what to watch out for!

MICROGREEN SHIPPING NIGHTMARES | BULK ORGANIC BLACK OIL SUNFLOWERS SECURED FOR WNC
Our urban microgreen farm, KC Gardens, has had a rough time getting organic black oil sunflower seed that we use for our sunflower shoots. Shipping times have been a month delayed or entire seed warehouses have been emptied out. We have recently gotten a hold of large (enough) quantities of Sunflower for our demand and have partnered with LOTUS Farm and Garden in WAVL to carry and hold bulk quantities of these seeds as I'm sure other micro farmers have run into this issue and won't necessarily have the cash flow in winter months to order pallets of sunflower to hold them through the slow months.
They also carry bulk Austrian Winter Pea that can be used as a reliable Pea Shoot!
I have put up links to my Masterclass with QRCodes and printable guides for starting growing your own micros there as well!
Stop in to LOTUS to chat about growing micros and get supplies.

Microgreens are the perfect crop for running experiments. With most of the common crops cranking out a generation every 7 and 10 days, half the fun with growing is the trial process!
Things we are playing with are :
Electrifying soil/water
pH testing
Wavelength Testing
Some Hydroponic Crops

Christmas in February! Seeds just came in. We unbox my spring seed order and go over the difficulty I'm seeing in finding non-gmo/heirloom/hybridized seed again, reminiscent of the 2020 seed panic. I encourage everyone to START LOOKING IF YOU HAVE NOT. I show you at the end the companies that are restricting buying or are severely backlogged along with the guides I use for seeding and transplanting dates.
Spring transplanting date is March 15 for Zone 6b/7a so it's time to seed and start the process with all the Spring favorites: kales, collards, broc, chard, pea, asian greens, etc. Direct seeding in 3 weeks!
We briefly go over how to find your agricultural zone and local resources for your gardening needs including: supplies (trays/lights,) information, and seed companies, listed blow:

Spring is officially here and any lessons learned about how much work gardening is at the end of summer is officially gone as my enthusiasm is at an all time high.
Buoyed by all the new gardener energy I'm around all week, I decided to chop up more lawn. Let's get seeding and take a tour of what I'm going to do differently this year.

Second in our series of home workouts for beginners/intermediate levels with bio-mechanics and exercise progressions explained.
Part of resilience is physical fitness - your body's ability to cope and adapt when put under stress. There is no better way to teach your physiology to thrive under pressure than to put it there, VOLUNTARILY.
This routine takes no more than 20 minutes and can be customized for your level of joint health and mobility as well as your current strength levels. #goals #futureauthoring #permaculture
Do you have specific goals and visions for yourself and your future or have you just gone with a stable approach of waiting for opportunity for most of your life? I have spent a good amount of time experimenting with growing approaches and all pathways that revolve around health but never written them down and concretely committed to any achievements around health, wealth, relationships, and community.
In this episode I review my 3 year goals revolving around growing, sustainability, future planning, and holding myself accountable.
I will also be starting a couple podcasts this year and want to know who you guys would like to see!

There are so many composting options out there! Plastic/Ceramic turning 50 gal barrels, vermiculture, mesh bags, etc. Composting should be to your context. If you have no space or animals that roam around, perhaps a smaller contained option is the way to go.
For me, having a little outside space, and a massive amount of spent microgreen trays, pallets are the way to go. Most stores will be happy if you take their old pallets off their hands. These just provide a barrier to soil to not spill over. I fill up a 4 x 4 x 4 space in about 3 weeks, so I need have a quickly scalable solutions. In this video, we go over various considerations for building your compost.
SPOILER: use way more dry material than wet.

Intercropping for Maximal Use of Garden Space and Time - Practical Applications of Permaculture

#garden #intercropping #permaculture #frenchmarketgardening
Intercropping is a technique generated from both French Intensive Market Gardening and permaculture. Basically, in a garden with not a ton of growing room, quick growing crops such as greens, herbs, and edible/medicinal flowers are used to cover the ground and fill the space between longer maturation plants such as Nightshades. Most of the time, this serves as the best use of growing time and can double as companion planting for protection against pests and pathogens. Good resources to reference specifics below:

Spring gardening has officially started! I am only a week behind schedule this year, which is different from my usual schedule of frantically playing catchup. Got the bulk of my cold weather seeding done today and took advantage of some bits of sunshine. Come seed with me!
I'll be putting up videos each step of the process. Today we seeded Cherokee Red Lettuce and Paris Island Green Romaine from Sow True, and Bright Lights Swiss Chard and Vates Curly Kale from True Leaf Market. These can all go out between March 1 and March 15 depending on if you are zone 6b or 7a (I am 6b) and most will take 30 to 45 days to reach mature transplanting size.
We also soaked some old seed to hedge our bets (no, not GameStop) on germination:
Sugar Ann Snap Peas
Bloomsdale Spinach
Spring Rapina Broc Raab
Italian Giant Parsley (never grown from seed before)
I also go over what I used for a germination/blackout chamber if you have shelving units and some black plastic lying around--helps to combat 30% humidity in my house!
These should be ready to go under lights in a week. I'll have another video up about seeding the soaked seeds tomorrow--hopefully we will be able to see taproots!

I have been getting some very detailed questions from new microgreen growers recently about nuanced approaches.
If you are a new grower (still a couple of months in) and you don't have a solid baseline to work from yet, perfect these fundamentals first!

Day 1 of Habit Change VLOG
Many people make New Year's resolutions for the start of a fresh year. Some people make changes all thoughout the year. Whatever your style, the finer points of breaking habits and forming new ones are the same. In this series, we are going to take a peek into the micro-processes of recognizing what cues repetitive neurological pathways and how to anticipate them and work around road blocks that are keeping you from your goals.
My chosen habit for this series is drinking coffee, or stimulants (caffeine containing products) in general. Not the worst habit to have, but detrimental to existing quick metabolisms and those prone to anxiety!

Sprouting a Culture for the Next Generation of Conscious Consumers through MICROGREENS w/Jesah Segal
Have you ever heard of microgreens?
Many of you will know that I have had the pleasure of serving the Asheville, NC area with fresh, living microgreens over the past 5 years through my farm, KC Gardens.
Microgreens are so nutrient rich, have such a low cost of entry, and are so widely enjoyed by the family that I've put out full tutorials on how to grow them in as little as 7 days. You can find all that information in the notes at the very bottom.
Today, I would like to introduce the man and company that my microgreens farm is merging with to continue to impact and educate anyone who wants to take their nutrition and sovereignty to the next level through living food and microgreens. Our stories are quite similar and his origin story is pretty incredible.
Jesah was born for this.
Jesal Segal of Sprout Culture:
Jesah Segal is on a mission to raise health consciousness. He is the Owner-Operator of Sprout Culture, an urban farm that grows organic microgreen in Asheville, North Carolina.
Jesah grew up in the unique culture of his parents' greenhouse located in southern California where they ran a sprout and microgreen business. This culture emerged out of his parents' celebration of living foods and the life-giving powers they provide. Jesah's higher purpose is to support the emergence of this same living-food culture, locally, and globally. Jesah's career has included military service, corporate consultant, and Digital Marketing Strategy.
He was a resident for over a year at Karme Choling, a Buddhist retreat center. He has spent 2 months in solitary mediation retreat Nepal, and a number of 1 month of meditation retreats. He is an Amani Institute Fellow and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Social Innovation Management. He spent 3-years as co-founder of Plastic Fantastic Kenya, a social change venture based in Kenya. He has traveled to 26 foreign countries, and holds the esteemed Eagle Scout award. A life-long fitness, health, and martial arts enthusiast, he holds a 1st-degree black belt in Taekwondo, a purple belt in Jiu Jitsu, and is a former amateur MMA fighter.
He is the proud, full-time, single father, and steward to his amazing 6-year-old daughter, Ami.
I'm sure you will hear the enthusiasm and raw appreciation to be able to serve this community with living greens in this interview.
You can learn more about Sprout Culture, KC Gardens, microgreens, and sovereignty below!

Lower Back Pain! Corrective and Preventative Exercises to Get You Back to Your Program

#fitness #lowerbackpain #homeworkout #personaltraining
Inevitably, on your pursuit towards strength and overall fitness, you will tweak your lower back. It doesn't take much: a rushed warmup, lack of dynamic stretching, lower barometric pressure, Mercury in retrograde, doesn't matter! I tend to tweak mine from a rushed warmup prior to a heavy leg or back day every couple of months. I've been out of the gym for a week letting it heal, but that's no excuse not to perform active recovery. If you can, get a walk, bike, or jog in--anything that you can move some blood around without a ton of pain.
I detail 3 key exercises that I use for overall muscular balancing (active recovery) since I'm like everyone else and end up sitting more than I would like.
Warmup Cat/Cow pose to test lumbar spine mobility/pain
1. 45 sec x 3 Quadruped Opposite Arm/Leg Reach to active our Posterior Chain and train the backside muscles to fire together and warm up our Glutes.
2. 3 x 45 sec Hip Trust/Bridge: the glutes are massive muscles and are usually stretched most of the day from sitting. This contributes to anterior pelvic tilt (flexed low back). Strengthen them with thrust to pull them under your thorax and into a more neutral position where they can assist the lumbar spine.
3. 20 reps Band Walk or Lying Leg Raise to target the Glute Medius which is responsible for hip external rotation and full hip extension. Usually underactive in most people.
4. Face Pull: Not responsible for lower back pain but since we are doing correctives, the best corrective upper body exercise in my opinion to strengthen the second most underactive part of the body that contributes to injury, the Rotator Cuff!
We build these into our training programs spread out throughout the week to ensure that we are not creating muscle imbalances with only the "heavy hitting" exercises. Low Back Pain is the single most common injury in adults under 45, and only second to Arthritis for older adults. It's worth taking care of!
Part of resilience is physical fitness - your body's ability to cope and adapt when put under stress. There is no better way to teach your physiology to thrive under pressure than to put it there, VOLUNTARILY.
This routine takes no more than 10 minutes and can be customized for your level of joint health and mobility as well as your current strength levels. We take the same care when training our clients, in person and virtually. No body is the same and everyone has their own neuromuscular habits and compensations that we make sure to program around and build in exercises to slowly bring the body back into balance.

#paleo #fatadapted #nomoregrazing
For the entirely of my life, I've eaten a high carbohydrate rich diet and grazed or snacked for the entire day. I used to eat every 3 hours to keep myself from getting shaky and hangry. I always thought it was "just my metabolism."
That's the normal tendency of people with my body type: ectomorph - tall, lanky, fast metabolism, always hungry
Last year, I started eating a more ancestral diet. Lots of well-sourced fatty animal products (or lean with added fat) and after about 2 weeks of my body adapting (more in video) to that way of eating, things started to change.
Yesterday was the first day where I just forgot to eat lunch (had a crazy busy day) and I didn't notice . That may be normal for some people, but that's a game changer for me (and probably everyone else tied to their hunger) and worth exploring!

Every Spring and Fall I try Carrots and every Spring and Fall I get maybe a 50% germination rate and go "better luck next year" (the gardener's motto.) This year I am actually going to put in the work to have successful carrots. I have a 4 x12 raised bed that came with this house that I have never fully overhauled with soil amendments so it's going to be our test bed. The process:
1. Dump Hi-Cal Lime (calcium source, less Mg)
2. Dump 5-3-3- fertilizer
3. Dump Greensand (carrots love sandy soil + trace minerals)
4. Dump ALOT of Rice Hulls for soil aeration (they will compost)
5. Till everything in to work into soil and break up compaction
6. Soak well (I live in a very windy area and beds dry out)
7. Cover with Insect cover to prevent wind/squirrels/birds from wrecking
the bed
Carrots take about 8 weeks to grow to maturity, although I may use some of them as baby carrots.
