Ep 45-Essentials for Thriving-Putting Your Needs First-Part 4 of 5-Health Coach Karin Del Maestro
From Karin Del Maestro, Integrative Nutrition/Health Coach:
You may have this little voice in your head whispering “you really need to take better care of yourself you know”
But that little whisper is most often followed by, yeah right!!
• With what time? Give me another 5 hours in the day!
• How am I supposed to juggle everything I’m already trying to do and add something else?
• Where do I find the energy to take better care of me?
• Isn’t that selfish? What about everyone else?
It can be hard to make the shift to focusing on your own needs first…especially when we’ve grown up just automatically taking care of everyone else.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
1. The link between lack of self-care and breast cancer, that you DO NOT want to miss!
2. Why it’s NOT selfish to take better care of yourself!
3. How to change the habit of a lifetime, so that you can have more energy for everyone around you and massively improve your quality of life…Every. Single. Day!

Ep 44 - Essentials for Thriving-Managing Stress-Part 3 of 5-Health Coach Karin Del Maestro
From Karin Del Maestro, Integrative Nutrition/Health Coach:
Have you ever wondered if stress causes cancer?
You may have even asked Dr. Google … with the answer being a resounding NO.
But I didn’t stop at that answer…because what I know from my extensive background in hormone health…I know what happens in our body when we get stressed.
Now, this episode is especially for you, if you experienced a big stressful time (not traffic on the way home from work…but the kind of stress that keeps you up at night!) 12-48 months prior to your breast cancer diagnosis.
And…if you were diagnosed with hormone receptive breast cancer.
You see, what you’ll learn in this episode is:
1. How STRESS impacts our body
2. How we cope with stress and how that can affect our risk factors
3. PLUS, what you can do differently, so that you don’t keep repeating the same things and expect a different outcome.

Ep 43 - Essentials for Thriving-Reducing Toxins-Part 2 of 5-Health Coach Karin Del Maestro
From Karin Del Maestro, Integrative Nutrition/Health Coach:
Did you know that the air in your home is up to 500 times more toxic than the air outside?
And yet, we are rarely told by our doctors that this EASY action of reducing toxins in our homes can have a HUGE impact on our health, including, yes…our breast health!
This, for me, is one of the easiest shifts we can make…after all, we are all buying products already to:
• Clean our homes
• Do laundry
• Wash our faces and hair
• Make-up
• Brush our teeth
• Store our food
So wouldn’t it make sense that if we are buying something anyway, why not make a safer choice, that could help boost your energy, minimize side-effects from medications and lower your risk of recurrence?
But it can feel overwhelming and knowing where to even start … can feel like a lot!
In this episode, I’ll be sharing:
1. The impact that these toxins can have on your health
2. Where to find these harmful chemicals
3. PLUS, the best next step to begin making the shift to safer…effortlessly!!!

What a DELIGHT and HONOR to talk with urologist, intimacy expert, top international podcaster, and bestselling author Dr. Kelly Casperson! We had a wide-ranging discussion about sex after breast cancer and had some fun, too!
Main Topics:
• YOU ARE NOT BROKEN – This is the name of Kelly’s podcast and book. From her website: “The thing I say all the time, you are not broken! There is absolutely zero upside to telling ourselves that we are deficient or lesser than. Why would we want to tell our bodies that? They’re wonderful as they are. They are good enough and lovable as they are. You might have a medical condition, and you are not broken.”
• Limiting beliefs about our sexuality
• Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
• What you should know about VET (Vaginal Estrogen Therapy) and MHT (Menopausal Hormone Therapy)

More and more success stories are being told in our private Sex After Breast Cancer support group! Our women are learning about solutions that are available to them to treat painful intercourse and lack of libido from our incredible group of Contributing Experts.
Today’s podcast features one of our women and a newlywed, Erin, who was struggling with both painful intercourse and lack of libido early in her marriage.
Through the encouragement of the women in our support group and the education she was able to get through our team of Contributing Experts, Erin felt empowered to talk to her providers about potential solutions to her issues. As she tried options along the way (including vaginal laser treatment and pelvic floor therapy), her gynecologist suggested that Erin see a different gynecologist who worked more often with women who take hormone blockers.
Erin tells the story of how that new gyny was able to specifically identify why intercourse was painful and how just a tiny bit of topical hormone cream applied a couple of times a week restored her tissue and took away her pain quickly!
And on the libido front, it was recommended that Erin try using a prescription medication Addyi that works in pre-menopausal women to treat decreased sexual desire. Her gyny said 70% of the women she prescribes it to had great results, and Erin was one of those. Although her gyny said it would take three months to have results, Erin experienced increase desire in the first month! (Note that there is one other prescription medication given by injection for pre-menopausal women who have low sexual desire called Vyleesi).
As it is with all of us, friends, painful intercourse and lack of libido is most likely caused by a combination of medical conditions that can be treated. Take Erin’s advice and ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF with your providers to find the answers you need. THERE IS HOPE.

Sexuality Counselor and Contributing Expert Traci Owen discusses "the conversation we should have had" when we were diagnosed with breast cancer. Sexuality issues should have been discussed, as well as ways to minimize the effects treatment has on your lady bits.
Traci discusses vaginal hydration which can mitigate the loss of estrogen most of us experience. There are also solutions for lack of libido, and she discusses the pros and cons of each.
There is no one-size-fits all way to go, friends. As Traci tells us, "You're trying to find what will work for YOU—you have to find YOUR solution."

Being a part of breast cancer support groups can be a wonderful experience, learning from one another, being wrapped in the love and support of women who "get it." But one of the downsides is that a breast cancer support group is full of women who have breast cancer. And some will die.
As part of my ongoing conversation with our Hope After Breast Cancer expert, Professional Counselor Cinthia Hiett, we talk about why we feel guilty when one of our pink sisters dies and how to respond in a healthy way to that passing. I hope you find it valuable.

Major topics covered—
Caring for your sexual body
• Caring for your sexual body does not require a partner! That is something that you have ownership of. You are a sexual woman whether or not you are sharing sex with a partner.
• It is so much easier to maintain vaginal health than it is to recover vaginal health. Maybe just start with some proactive vaginal hydration every week. This is about health in your body.
• Our urinary system, our vulva (outside), our vagina (inside), and the pelvic floor muscles are all impacted by the loss of estrogen in our systems.
• Using a full-sized vibrator with penetration at least twice a week to promote blood flow to the vagina will help maintain vaginal health, in the flexibility, in the length of its accommodation, and in the circumference of the accommodation.
• Listen to your body and be proactive!
If you have painful intercourse, hydrate for at least two weeks, then move to dilation.
Vaginal moisturizing/hydration (hydrates the tissue and promotes vaginal health)
• Vaginal estrogen
• Oral estrogen
• Oral estrogen combined with a non-hormonal gel
• Non-hormonal (hyaluronic acid products Traci recommends:
o Hyalo Gen
o Revaree
o Gynatrof
Dilation (work) / Vibrators (fun)
• If sex is painful, go for a dilator
o Traci likes the Dr. Laura Berman Intimate Basics - Dilator Set
• Vibrators can be used to promote blood flow, to relax the muscles, and for pleasure
o Start simple until you can figure out what you like.
o https://www.rosetoy-official.com/ is the website mentioned, but it’s certainly not the only one!
Lubricants (reduces friction) - Traci recommends the following lubes
• Water-based lubes: Good Clean Love, Enchanted Rose, Velvet Rose
• Silicone-based lubes aren’t recommended—they can degrade a vibrator so don’t use together.
• Hybrid lubes: Naked Silk, Wet Gold
Vaginal pH
• Prevention (these things will maintain a healthy environment in the vagina): Probiotics (research the biome’s relationship to the vagina), vaginal estrogen, hyaluronic acid
• When you have recurrent bacterial infections in your vagina, Traci prescribes boric acid.
• Please don’t use products that have fragrances!
Urethral prolapse
• Can be caused by a combination of loss of estrogen, chronic constipation, overweight, pregnancy, childbirth, weak pelvic floor muscles, pelvic trauma.
• Typical treatment plan
o Vaginal estrogen
o Hydration of vaginal walls with dilation
o Pelvic floor therapy to strengthen muscles
Use of Cialis in women
• FDA hasn’t been approved for women.
• Option is to use cuddle cream / scream cream. It’s easy. Put it where you want it without systemic effect.
Vaginal exams
• Pediatric speculums are available if you are concerned about adult-sized speculums
• Feel free to ask if you can remain clothed to have a conversation with your gynecologist before your exam. Great idea! Advocate for yourself!
Women’s Healthcare Provider Worksheet
• Download here – https://sexafterbreastcancer.com/
Medications and sex
• All the meds that impact the central nervous system may impact you sexually.
• SSRIs have a pretty high impact on desire (diminished or inability to orgasm OR persistent genital arousal). SSRIs approved to treat depression are Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Pexeva, Zoloft.
• Play with the timing of your meds
• See if you can lower the dosage
• Some anti-depressants that have fewer sexual side effects: Wellbutrin, Remeron, Viibryd, Trintellix

Ep 31 - Mindful Eating Tips and Fearless Eating with Dawn Hopkins - Hope After Breast Cancer LIVE!
If you didn’t see Part 1 of this two-part interview, consider watching this for an introduction to mindful eating!
https://rumble.com/v1ugcbm-ep-30-hope-after-breast-cancer-live-am-i-hungry-mindful-eating-with-dawn-ho.html
Our second interview with Mindful Eating Facilitator Dawn Hopkins did not disappoint! Topics covered—
*Mindful/intentional eating
*The Am I Hungry Hunger Scale is a great tool to incorporate into your eating habits. It’s time to eat when you’re around a 2 or 3 on the ten-point scale—and it’s time to stop around a 5 or 6.
*Dawn taught us the “Mind/Body/Heart” exercise to take a pause before eating and getting into the mindful mindset.
*Dawn walked us through important considerations around our eating experience: environment, breathing, aromas, small bites, gratitude, putting the fork down, staying present and aware during the meal, pausing to reassess hunger in the middle of the meal.
*We went through a “fearless eating” exercise to fully experience eating for enjoyment, not just nourishment. What FUN!
Dawn is planning an eight-week Mindful Eating Workshop starting in February 2022. To be sure you are informed of the details about that workshop, contact Jan James through our website (https://www.hopeafterbreastcancer.com/contact-us)

Friends, I am so very excited to bring you this training about “Mindful Eating.” Our Contributing Expert Dawn Hopkins is, among other things, a Licensed Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating Facilitator.
“Mindful eating”? What the heck is THAT? From the Am I Hungry? website:
You were born with a natural, instinctive relationship with food.
As a young child, you knew when you were hungry and when you were full.
You ate what you loved without guilt. And when you were done eating, food was no longer your focus. You turned your attention to playing, exploring, and growing while your body used the fuel for energy.
Along the way, you probably picked up messages about food and your body from family, friends, healthcare, and the media. For example, you were told that certain foods are “bad,” and when you eat them, you are “bad” too.
Instead of play, exercise became punishment for eating or for earning the right to eat. Your body was somehow wrong, creating an intense longing to change it to earn acceptance and approval.
This set you up for a life-long pattern we call the eat-repent-repeat cycle.
It’s time to heal your relationship with food.
When you stop obsessing about food and your body and heal your relationship with food, you free your energy to live the big, vibrant life you crave!
Dawn is a world-class “trainer of trainers” in the yoga community. But she’s also passionate about the way the Am I Hungry? Program helped her change her relationship with food and heal deep-seated issues from an eating disorder. As a breast cancer survivor herself, she wants to bring what she’s learned to our community! Please join us—we’re waiting for you!

I believe it's rare that a woman who has had breast cancer really tackles the wounds that grief and loss leave after a life-altering diagnosis. After all, there are tons of physical issues that need to be handled as quickly as possible with cancer—most of us don't have enough bandwidth to work on emotional issues at the same time.
But in order to live a thriving life, it's important that we don't brush grief and loss under the rug. At Hope After Breast Cancer, we've added a few new experts to our team to help women discuss, recognize, and heal their unseen wounds from the losses they've experienced.
Meet our Contributing Expert, Carla Mannes. Carla is a Holistic Therapist who specializes in grief and loss counseling with adults, teens, and families. And Carla is a two-time breast cancer thriver. She's actually walked the road you've been on.
We're so grateful for all the knowledge and expertise that Carla is bringing to our community, both in recorded interviews on our website and live interviews inside our THRIVER NATION membership group. THANK YOU, Carla!

Courage for our ancestors typically meant physicality. But in today’s society, courage takes on different forms. These days we are often fighting a war of words. It takes courage to create healthy boundaries. Nothing is truly “dangerous” right now except getting your feelings hurt or being disappointed.
Other topics:
• Being brave in sharing your faith
• Courtesy is the #1 way to settle agitated people down
• What is the cost of being brave? The cost is risk—but the payoff is HUGE
• The best way to settle down fight or flight stress is to BREATHE
• Evangelism today—Any time we take risks for God, He loves to see us growing
• Be honest. Take risks. Depend on Him!

Before breast cancer, I had no idea there was a long list of conditions that are associated with the disease. Many of us are thrown into medically-induced menopause, while others go through chronological menopause. Either way, we need to be aware of a condition called vaginal atrophy.
Mayo Clinic says, "Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) is thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls that may occur when your body has less estrogen. Vaginal atrophy occurs most often after menopause. For many women, vaginal atrophy not only makes intercourse painful but also leads to distressing urinary symptoms."
This video will help you determine if you may be fighting vaginal atrophy and give you information to discuss with your personal provider.

Many breast cancer fighters struggle with taking hormone blockers. Back in 2018, I did a live video on the Booby Buddies group page on Facebook to tell my hormone blocker story. I hope you get a chuckle out of it!

Shortly after I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was surprised at how much I felt like I was being followed around by a dark cloud. That was something I had never experienced before.
I was even more surprised to being diagnosed with clinical depression soon after that. It turns out that getting a life-threatening diagnosis causes most people to be depressed—it's totally normal!
My longtime counselor and life coach Cinthia Hiett worked with me through that season to make sense of it all. She had some tremendously great advice that she gave me, and I asked her to share it with you here. I hope you find it helpful!

The beautiful Pamela Powers has had a dramatic transformation since her breast cancer diagnosis. One of the most significant things that happened is that she changed her self-talk. For years, her words about herself and to herself were negative and even hateful. Today Pamela says, "I'm showering myself with words of love every day now!"
You're going to love hearing from Pamela, a single mom of three children. She has an incredibly positive attitude and is so inspiring! THANK YOU, Pamela!
