Extended footage covers a stretch of Provincial Highway No. 20 starting about 30 km down to the west from Tianchi. The mountain road provides magnificent views into the valley of Laonong River and to adjacent mountain scenery. Between August 6, 2009, and August 10, 2009, Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot, which brought about unprecedented rainfall and flooding across the country. Kaohsiung saw over 2,500 millimeters of rainfall within three days. Many people died in this devastating flooding incident. Huge damage occurred to the infrastructure, including in the valley of Laonong River. The Southern Cross-Island Highway 南橫公路, also known as Provincial Highway No. 20, links Tainan City on the west coast to Taitung City on the east coast of Taiwan. The highest point of the road, Yakou, is 2,722 m above sea level. The route was cut through the mountains in the early 1970s, but the highest sections were not properly paved until 1992. The highway was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and has been closed ever since. At time of filming, the road was open from west to Tianchi at an elevation of 2,280 m (on certain days and hours). Heaven’s pond, Tianchi 天池 and Changqing Shrine 長青祠 are the furthermost point accessible from west on highway no. 20 currently (2020 May). The single pylon unsymmetrical cable-stayed bridge over Gaoping River is connecting Dashu, Kaohsiung City and Jiuru, Pingtung County. Construction period: 1996 April 29 ~ 1999 December 30. The bridge carries the Freeway #3 and was opened for traffic in 2000. The superstructure is made of steel and post-tensioned concrete. Dimensions: total length 2,617 m width 34.4 m height of the pylon 183.5 m main span 330 m side span 184.4 m The bridge consists of a single pylon with an inverted Y-frame and a single central plane cable system including 28 cable stays. The longitudinal arrangement of the bridge has an unsymmetrical configuration with a main span of 330 m and a side span of 184.4 m. The deck structure of the bridge is constructed with a single steel box girder in the main span and a single reinforced concrete box girder in the side span in order to balance the loads acting on the pylon. Views of the sediment removal works at Tsengwen Reservoir, Dapu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan. It is the biggest reservoir in Taiwan by volume. The reservoir stores water for irrigation of the Chianan Plain, Taiwan's most productive agricultural region, and provides flood control along the Zengwen River. The dam supports a 50 megawatt hydroelectric power station. Due to lack of precipitation in 2020/early 2021 (drought) the water level is rather low beginning of May 2021 (about 37 metres below max). The reservoir has suffered severe siltation (sedimentation) from the watershed comprising steep slopes of high mountain ranges (~2500 m MSL), which has caused a large reduction in its capacity. Siltation has reduced the volume of water available for irrigation and hydropower, as well as the effectiveness of the Zengwen reservoir to control flooding. Sediment removal works at the dry lakebed adjacent to Dapu Lakeside Park can be seen in this video. An armada of excavators is loading the soil onto trucks. The fleet of trucks transport the sediment to an nearby onshore soil disposal site. The sediment removal is a huge never ending reservoir maintenance work. Footage covers apartment buildings in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Recently, a construction boom of tall apartment buildings in otherwise mainly low rise residential neighborhoods can be observed in the city. The buildings are mushrooming at many locations. Urban planning appears to provide not many restrictions for such buildings e. g. regarding spacing to adjacent houses and height of the high-rises. Also, this urban consolidation means an increase of population and road traffic in neighborhoods with only narrow streets.
