Tianliao Moon World Landscape Park 月世界地景公園 🇹🇼 (2020-06) {aerial}
Aerial views of Moon World, Tianliao District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.
Moon World is part of a stretch of badlands that cover a large swath of southern Taiwan near the central mountain range. Typical badlands are found in dryer climates, are composed of sedimentary rocks, typically have very little vegetation, and have deep valleys or ravines. The badlands in Taiwan are unique in that they are in a tropical rain forest. The rocks at Moon World are composed of mudstone, sandstone, shale, and chalk. Because of high alkaline levels due to chalk in the soil, trees and grass cannot grow, and basically the only plant that can grow in the soil is spiny bamboo. The lack of vegetation as well as high rainfall gives way to quick eroding hills, or badlands. The Caoshan River and the Ganglin River also helped to carve out the landscape and bare hills.

Huwei Steel Bridge 虎尾鐵橋 🇹🇼 (2021-02) {aerial}
Aerial views of historic Huwei Steel Bridge, Huwei Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan.
The multi-span steel bridge spans the Huwei River near Huwei Sugar Factory Park. Financed by Dai-Nippon Sugar Co., the British-designed bridge consists of three steel truss sections of different depths and is supported by ten hollow arched piers. There are some nine more spans with associated piers towards the east bank of the river. A plaque reads: Kisha Seizo Kwaisha Osaka 1913. The track is dual gauge 762 mm & 1067 mm. The spur line once connected the sugar refinery with Dounan Station. No trains run on the bridge anymore.

Tsengwen Reservoir 曾文水庫 drought 🇹🇼 (2021-05-01) {aerial}
Views of the low water level and sediment removal works at Tsengwen Reservoir, Dapu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan. It is the biggest reservoir in Taiwan by volume. The reservoir stores water for irrigation of the Chianan Plain, Taiwan's most productive agricultural region, and provides flood control along the Zengwen River. The dam supports a 50 megawatt hydroelectric power station.
Due to lack of precipitation in 2020/early 2021 (drought) the water level is rather low beginning of May 2021 (about 37 metres below max).
The reservoir has suffered severe siltation (sedimentation) from the watershed comprising steep slopes of high mountain ranges (~2500 m MSL), which has caused a large reduction in its capacity. Siltation has reduced the volume of water available for irrigation and hydropower, as well as reducing the effectiveness of the Zengwen reservoir to control flooding.
Sediment removal works at the dry lakebed adjacent to Dapu Lakeside Park can be seen in this video. An armada of excavators is loading the soil onto trucks. The fleet of trucks transport the sediment to an nearby onshore soil disposal site. The sediment removal is a huge never ending reservoir maintenance work.

2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival - Kaohsiung 🇹🇼 (2022-02) {slide show}
Still images of 2022 台灣燈會在高雄Taiwan Lantern Festival In Kaohsiung, at Weiwuying and Love River Bay
"Introduction to the Taiwan Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival begins on the 15th day of the first month of the new Lunar Year. It’s also traditionally the last day of the Lunar New Year Festival. On the Lantern Festival evening, households go outside to enjoy lanterns, solve lantern riddles, and set off firecrackers. Sometimes performers entertain the crowds, such as by walking on stilts. The spirit of all these activities is to usher in the New Year with a spirit of peace and prosperity, and to bring the entire community together to have fun.
In order to bring this traditional Taiwanese folk activity to the international stage, and pass on the craftsmanship of lantern making, the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation & Communications began organizing an annual “Taipei Lantern Festival" in 1990. The festival was enlarged in 2001, and renamed the “Taiwan Lantern Festival.” As part of this transition, the Tourism Bureau began rotating the location of the main festival among Taiwan’s various cities and counties. The festival is co-organized with the host city/county. One goal is to spread the festival’s economic benefits more widely. The Lantern Festival has received much positive recognition in the international media, and it has become a strong brand for Taiwan. This year represents the 33rd Taiwan Lantern Festival. The success of the festival has helped pave the way for increasing global recognition of Taiwan’s broad range of folk festivals." (Courtesy of https://tw-light.tw/en/)

English description below this video https://youtu.be/r_a9oC5tMXs

Visiting Exotenwald and Wachenburg in Weinheim 🇩🇪 (2022-09)
Footage of a walk through Exotenwald (forest) and at Wachenburg (castle), Weinheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Weinheim, a charming town located in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is known for its beautiful natural scenery and impressive architecture. Among the town's most famous landmarks are the two castles, Windeck and Wachenburg, which have very different histories but offer breathtaking views of the Rhine Valley and the Palatinate Forest. The town's nickname is Zweiburgenstadt, which means "the town of two castles."
One of the town's most visited attractions is the Exotenwald Weinheim, a forest arboretum located beside the Schlosspark. The arboretum spans about 60 hectares and is open daily to visitors free of charge. Established in 1871 by Christian Friedrich Gustav Freiherr von Berckheim, former Minister of State and Großhofmeister at the court in Karlsruhe, the arboretum is home to a vast collection of exotic trees and plants from around the world. The Exotenwald Weinheim is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, especially during the fall season when the forest transforms into a magical and enchanting place.
The Wachenburg, on the other hand, is a castle built at the beginning of the 20th century and is not an "old" castle built for military purposes but a gathering place for corps students. It is located above the town and offers stunning views of Weinheim, Rhine river plain and the surrounding area. The castle is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike to enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee in a romantic setting. The Wachenburg also houses a decent restaurant and hosts various events throughout the year.
Overall, Weinheim's Exotenwald and Wachenburg are two must-visit destinations for anyone visiting the town. The Exotenwald offers a unique opportunity to explore a vast collection of exotic trees and plants from around the world, while the Wachenburg offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area and a chance to enjoy a romantic meal or coffee in a beautiful setting. Whether you're a nature lover or a history buff, Weinheim has something to offer for everyone.
