North Signal Box of Kaohsiung Port Station 🇹🇼 (2023-04)
North Signal Box (notes from the official leaflet)
高雄港車站 北號誌樓
The Core Value of North Signal Box (NSB)
The most essential and complicated function of NSB is to achieve the "signal-signal", "signal-turnout", "turnout-turnout" interlocking. Wit the interlocking bed ensuring the coordination between levers, levers can in turn "remote control" the turnouts and signals in electrical and mechanical ways so as to coordinate operations of these devices. Before radio was available, the employees could also control and monitor the train dispatching by using the yard inter-phone.
NSB
The air traffic control tower directs takeoff and landing of aircraft, and the lighthouse guides ships to safety, while the signal box is the hub of train dispatching. Through sophisticated mechanical interlocking, the signal box controls the switches on the distant ground to ensure the efficient and safe operation of train arrivals and departures at the station.
During Japanese Colonial Era, signal boxes could be found at various larger train stations with complicated tracks layout, but as of today, only four of them are preserved. Among them, NSB of Kaohsiung Port Station, a two-story modest structure, has been left intact by chance, as passenger trains do not go through this station and, therefore, modernization has not been necessary. Now it is the only signal box in Taiwan with a complete interlocking system and operational capability.
The NSB was decommissioned in November 2008. Not only was the structure preserved at the original spot, but the equipment was also largely preserved, including the mechanical lever, the electric lever, interlocking bed, the electric locked box, display board, the electric tablet block instrument, the yard inter-phone, and the mechanical interlocking system connected to the signal box, iron bars connected to the switches, and other related mechanical instruments. For this preservation project, Kaohsiung Light Rail line near the site was also redesigned. NSB is a beautiful demonstration of the cutting edge of mechanical technology in the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
NSB, along with the old train station house, was listed as a Kaohsiung historic site named Takao Railway Station in July 2010, and was further incorporated into the cultural landscape "Kaohsiung Port Station and Old Harbor Area - Railway Tracks and Architecture Group" in 2018.
1st Floor Employee Break Room
To the south of the machine room was an employee break room, which was a later addition to the building out of the necessity of a space for the on-duty staff to take a break and get ready for next shift.
1st Floor Machine Room
The iron bars connected to the levers travel downward through the floor to this machine room, turn horizontal, closely parallel to the ground floor, then pass through the front wall bottom to outside the house, and eventually connect to various switches to control the turnouts around the station.
2nd Floor Balcony
All four walls of the 2nd floor are installed with continuous large sliding windows with the glass windowpanes offering greater penetration of natural light. There are doors open to the east and the south, so that the employees could step outside onto the balcony to observe the operations at the station, and to use flag signals to direct train dispatching.
2nd Floor Operations Control Room
The second floor, whose floor, walls and roof are made of wood, is an open space office without any partition walls. In the north part of the room are the switch levers, signal levers, and the interlocking bed which coordinates all the levers. All these are linked to the machine room down below. Above the levers is the display board, which shows the service status of each switch. The south part used to be the working space, equipped with things such as the electric tablet block instrument linked to Qianzhen Depot, train approaching warning system, and the switchboard of yard inter-phones.
Exhibition Area
1. Daily Duties of Signal Box Staff
Employee break room, located on the first floor of NSB, was where the staff took a break. The interview video clips broadcast here focus on the daily routines of the staff, and the instruments they used plus their mechanism.
2. Past Glories of NSB
The second floor of NSB has been restored to the former state and now houses precious artifacts that show its cultural heritage value. This area exhibits the preserved artifacts, supplemented with a building model, and AR technology, giving the visitors a glimpse into the past glories of trains arriving at and departing from Kaohsiung Port Station.
3. NSB - Workmanship of the Times
The mechanism of railways and the signal box is further illustrated through images, graphics, texts, as well as animations.

Applying for a national park drone operation permit 🇹🇼 (2021-10)
How to apply for a Kenting National Park 墾丁國家公園 drone operation permit?
Preparations for aerial filming (drone) at Kenting National Park as a hobbyist are as follows. Register the drone online with Civil Aeronautics Administration Drone Office of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the Republic of China at https://drone.caa.gov.tw/en-US .
Select tentative locations that promise nice imagery as an advance planing of the shoot areas.
A (free) permit is required for drone operation within the park boundaries. Related information is available on the Kenting National Park website https://www.ktnp.gov.tw/ (Chinese only).
The drone operation permit application form can be downloaded from the Kenting National Park website https://www.ktnp.gov.tw/ (Chinese language only).
The filled out drone operation permit application form then needs to be mailed to the Kenting National Park headquarters. This should be done at least one week ahead of the intended park visit.
The drone operation permit will then be mailed back to you. It includes some rules as well (Chinese language only).
Besides following the National Park rules for drone operation the CAA regulations apply of course as well. See in particular the airspace query section at https://drone.caa.gov.tw/ .
Notes:
1) The national park drone operation permit application process appears to be currently available in
Chinese language only.
2) Permit application involves mailing letters back and forth instead of an online procedure.
3) Consequently, weather conditions may have changed significantly between start of the application process and actual flight operation. Strong winds and precipitation are common in this coastal region at times.
4) Information provided in this video is indicative only. Rules and regulations are subject to change. Get valid information from the related authorities directly!

Giant Spherical Bearing 🇨🇳 (2017-06)
Impressions from a large size spherical bearing
The temporary bearing is being used to rotate a bridge during its construction. It is at a railway bridge construction site. A large bearing is being lifted by a mobile crane. Precisely, the calotte is being hoisted by a mobile crane. It is part of a temporary spherical bearing. The bearing is used for the swivel construction method of a cast-in-place railway bridge, which is part of a new high-speed railway line in China. The new line has to pass over existing railway lines and highways in the area of Shangqiu City.
Bridge swivel construction refers to a construction method in which the bridge structure is built at a temporary axis alignment and then positioned in the final location by swivel action. The swivel construction method can reduce dangers to an operational railway line/highway through building a bridge superstructure at the side of the existing line (railway, highway). Dangers of falling objects and interference with train operation during the construction process can be vastly reduced. The actual rotation process takes only a short period of time.
On top of the foundation of the bridge pier a spherical bearing is placed and the pier construction continues afterwards on top of the bearing. The (upper) spherical part (calotte) of the bearing is placed on the lower concave counterpart at site. The void in the calotte has to meet the center pin of the lower part. Then it can be completely lowered down. To reduce friction PTFE elements and grease are used in combination with a very smooth surface of the calotte. The bridge superstructure will be built using the balanced cantilever method (in this case). The bridge construction does not interfere with the train operation of the existing electrified railway. Once the bridge pier and superstructure have been build the bridge will be rotated to its final alignment around a vertical axis. Then the moving function of the bearing is no longer needed. A permanent rigid connection between bridge pier and foundation is being established then. The two parts of the bridge superstructure will be stitched together once the final position is reached.
Details of the parts of the (temporary) spherical bearing and adjacent structural members are shown in this video. The footage covers various locations (i. e. different bridges). The spherical bearing is arriving at site by truck. Then the lower part of the bearing is placed on the pile cap of the bridge pier. It is going to be surrounded by reinforced concrete. The calotte of the bearing gets temporarily stored at site. The same happens to temporary sand pot bearings. They are needed for additional support of the bridge during construction. The concave part of the bearing is lubricated with grease. PTFE elements that work as sliding elements in contact with the calotte are placed into machined recesses. A thick grease layer on the lower bearing part covers the PTFE elements as well. On top of the spherical bearing bridge pier construction continues. Post-tensioned concrete member (pier base) follows on top of the spherical bearing. It is cast on a scaffolding. Starter bars from pier foundation and pier base will be connected after rotation process. Concrete anchor points for the hydraulic jacks that pull strands horizontally to achieve the rotation of the pier will be prepared. Pre-rotation situation: The bridge superstructure is aligned roughly parallel to the existing railway line. Due to balanced cantilever construction method there is a temporarily rigid connection between bridge superstructure and pier. Monitoring of the achieved rotation angle between foundation and pier is done via a large scale placed on the structure. After rotation a rigid connection is being created to permanently block the spherical bearing and to allow for transfer of the forces from the pier to the foundation. A monolithic connection is achieved. The newly aligned bridge superstructures need to be connected by a closure segment in the center of the bridge.

Earthquake Damage and Mitigation in Taiwan 🇹🇼 (2022-09-18)
On September 17 and 18, 2022 two major earthquakes occurred, followed by many aftershocks. Epicenter was at Taitung County in the east of Taiwan. Magnitudes were 6.5 and 6.9 respectively (Richter magnitude scale). Main affected areas were Taitung County, Hualien County (and Pingtung County). The epicenter of Sunday's quake was in Chishang Township at a depth of 7.0 kilometers and 42.7 km north of Taitung County Hall. The tremors could be well felt all over the island though.
The observed damages highlight the challenges that seismic events provide to a country's infrastructure. Buildings, bridges, railways, roads, dams, power lines etc. need to be designed and constructed to withstand those particular dynamic loads of seismic events. Design standards are being adjusted and amended based on previous earthquake events (lessons learned).
► The toppled three-story building in Yuli Township, Hualien County did not collapse like a stack of pancakes but instead, provided cavities for trapped people to survive.
► The collapsed concrete bridges reveal a weak structural member, the piers, which crushed in the lower section.
► Observed roadway damage (buckling, cracking) is generally caused by ground failure, or faulting. Ground failure includes events such as differential settling and loss of soil strength. Roads depend on the strength of the soil below them for support. If the soil below them loses strength or is ripped apart, the roads will follow suit. Faulting occurs when surface faults coincide with the roadway surface, causing it to shift, and potentially buckle.
► The train derailment at Dongli Station, Hualien County, was apparently caused by a collapsed platform roof that interfered with the train.
► Falling objects inside buildings and adjacent to buildings pose dangers to people (search cover).
► In mountainous regions, earthquake triggered rock slides may pose special dangers to the people there (pedestrians as well as motorists).
► Temporary works on construction sites need to be designed for seismic loads as well where applicable.
Thanks go to all those people who captured the events (please use landscape mode on your device in future) and to all the helpers and rescue personnel who help mitigating the aftermath of the earthquake. Detailed inspection for damages of rail and road networks will take some time.

No Station Piano 🇹🇼 (2022-07) {music}
There is currently no public piano available at Kaohsiung Main Station 高雄車站, Sanmin District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The TRA station is connected to the KRTC MRT Red Line station. The concourses on several levels provide plenty of open space. Other international cities (e. g. London, UK) have made available public pianos at public spaces. At Kaohsiung National Center for the Arts - Weiwuying a public piano is available. Such a piano gives musicians the opportunity to share their skills with a random audience. And it can be a stage for content creators to interact with their followers. The passers by (travelers) may enjoy a short stop at a free concert. I believe there are many young people in Taiwan who took piano lessons and feel confident to promote the art of music. Of course, a public piano would match very well the beautiful new station building (under construction).

Key event is the begin of dismantling Zhongbo Bridge 中博高架橋. The steel-concrete composite road bridge connected Jhongshan 1st Road in the south and Boai 1st Road in the north of the station's track and platform area. The temporary bridge went into operation in May 2003 and was closed for traffic at 00:00 o'clock of 27 February 2021. The bridge once had taken the vehicular traffic from a tunnel under the railway tracks, which was permanently closed in connection with the MRT station construction works. 06:00 o'clock on 2021-03-08 newly built Jhansi Road 站西路 was opened for traffic (west side of the new station building). The works for rerouting the traffic from the bridge to the street have been carried out within a tight schedule of about nine days. This became possible due to good planning of the activities and mobilization of plenty of construction equipment (including mobile cranes, excavators, asphalt milling machines, rollers, pavers, and rollers).

Aerial views of civil structures of South-North Water Transfer Project (南水北调工程) central route at Fangcheng County, Henan, People's Republic of China.
The South–North Water Transfer Project is a infrastructure mega-project in the People's Republic of China. It aims to channel fresh water from the Yangtze River in southern China to the more arid and industrialized north through three canal systems. The central, or middle, route runs from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Han river, a tributary of the Yangtze River, to Beijing. The canal was constructed so that gravity is the force pushing the flow of the water all the way from the Danjiangkou Reservoir to Beijing, without the need for pumping stations.

A ride with the handcar, episode 1/2 🇩🇪 (2022-10)
Real time full length footage of a ride on the handcar from Mörlenbach to Wald-Michelbach, Bergstrasse District, Hesse, Germany (on an about 10 km section of the former Überwald railway line).
Nowadays, only tourist solar handcars operate on the standard gauge track. Each handcar can carry a maximum of eight people. The maximum speed is 15 km/h. The vehicles are powered by an electric motor. Electricity is supplied by rechargeable batteries (recharged from the grid overnight), solar panels on the roof, recuperation at downhill sections, and by pedal-powered generators. The pedaling action of the driver creates propulsion via an electric drivetrain system. Faster pedaling means higher driving speed. Stopping to pedal stops the vehicle. Four seats are equipped with pedals. There is an additional handbrake and an off-switch for the whole system.
Handcars leave from one end of the line one after the other with a minimum headway of 100 m. When all cars have reached the destination at the end of the line they can take the trip back in the same way. There are two level crossings with signals that have to be triggered manually. Several cattle crossings and farm road crossings are just indicated by signage.
The legal regulation for operation of this railway is the 'Verordnung über den Bau und Betrieb der Straßenbahnen' ("Regulation on the Construction and Operation of Light Railways"), abbreviated as BOStrab.
We faced serious skidding of the wheels at two locations. Probably the rails were still wet from autumnal morning dew that created traction problems. In addition, there were only three persons on board the vehicle preventing firm wheel/rail contact. Staff of the rail operator provided support by manually pushing the handcar.

History of the Überwald railway
The Überwaldbahn is a standard gauge spur line running originally from Mörlenbach via Weiler, Kreidach, Wald-Michelbach, Unter-Wald-Michelbach, Aschbach, and Affolterbach to Wahlen. It started operation in 1901. The hilly topography required construction of two tunnels and three larger and two small viaducts. It was connected to the railway line Weinheim - Fürth at Mörlenbach station. The complete line had freight and passenger traffic until March 1, 1984. At that date train operation ceased on the Unter-Wald-Michelbach - Wahlen section and the track was disassembled the following year and the alignment was converted into a bicycle path in the year 2000. The section Mörlenbach - Wald-Michelbach was closed on March 31, 1994. The tourist handcar operation commenced on August 18, 2013 after a hefty investment in track refurbishment.
