Northern Lights Highlights-Finland 🌟 09/14/23 01:05
We start off with beams of pink and white, with swirls of green, dancing across the sky. An hour goes by when darker shades of pink, yellow, and green shoot up beams. Lastly, we are delighted by spectacular shades of yellow and orange with a hint of turquoise lighting up the starlit skies of Finland.

The Great Horned Owl pair returned to the nest with territory calls heard off-cam. The female arrives first at the support branch and shortly after, the male drops down to the nest. An intruder is spotted flying around and above their heads, so more territorial calls are needed. It is possible that it could be the Barred Owl, off-cam, which has also staked claim to this territory as well. The Barred Owl is heard yearly from this cam site and has also met its demise once with the Great Horned Owls. The intruder, off-cam, continues to taunt the pair for a few minutes before leaving them alone. A few nestorations are done by the male before the female finally decides to check out the nest for herself. The usual pine cone pecking happens before the female poses for a close-up and then departs from the nest.

Savannah Great Horned Owls Are Back-Cam Two 🦉 08/31/23 05:55
After a long vacation, the Great Horned Owls return to the nest. Off-cam they make territorial calls to let all those around know that this is their claimed territory which can reach up to 5 miles around the surrounding area. The male arrives first at the nest. While still doing their territorial calls back and forth, he checks around a bit and does some nestorations. After a while, the female drops down from the Fairway Branch as the male flies back up. She only stays long enough to look around, and then she flies up on the branch with her mate. The two then depart out of the cam range. The male will take her to several locations and it will be up to the female as to which place she feels the most comfortable to brood her eggs.

Adorable Hawklet Eats Dinner 🐥 05/01/23 05:07
It's time for our adorable little hawklet (eyas) to eat dinner and this time we get a full view of the little cutie being fed by his/her beautiful majestic mom.
FYI: As there could be many different reasons for the actions we see out of Angel's mate, Tom, we have to remember he is a young Hawk and a first-time father. Each bird is different, and their behavior also depends on the amount of testosterone they have. Obviously, if they carry a high level of testosterone they will be more aggressive. With Tom, we have seen both sides. While he was rough with his hawklet, he also showed a soft and nurturing side. There is not one species of creature that I have seen through the years, that hasn't shown one side or the other, nurturing or aggressive. The reason for that is that it all depends on DNA and hormones, with various sub-factors along the way. This is a short article explaining the difference testosterone makes in a bird. There were other papers as well, but they were extremely technical and long and can be researched if needed. https://news.virginia.edu/content/study-shows-costs-and-benefits-testosterone-birds

Stats (from cam link above):
Location- Tennessee (exact location cannot be given for her safety)
Angel - Female, 7+ years of age, Leucistic (White)
Unnamed Mate- Male, 3+ years of age, Normal Coloration
Nest: 40 feet tall, 3 feet long x 1.5 feet wide, human-reinforced nest
Cams: Above the nest is a tiny pinhole cam so we don't intrude into the small nest, this cam does not have IR (night vision). We have a long-range PTZ cam in a distant tree, with IR and Mic.
Angel's Story (from cam link above):
Angel is a very rare Leucistic Red-Tailed Hawk. 2 years ago, Angel & Mohawk (no longer around) raised 3 chicks and they fledged successfully. Last year Angel chose a new mate and he was still a subadult. Since the new male was not fully mature, they did not have eggs last year. This year he has fully matured and their bond seems strong. Will post a view soon about the history of Angel and how we came to put in this very unique and rare camera.

Tom Brings In a Second Opossum 🌲 05/01/23 03:27
Tom shows up back to the nest with another baby Opossum. He places the Opossum down on the nest, next to the first one, then flies up to a branch off-cam. A few seconds later, he flies back to the nest, observes what he has brought, and takes off again. The hawklet (eyas) and Angel now have plenty of food for the night.
Baby's First Meal 🐥 05/01/23 02:59
After Tom brings the Opossum, Angel starts feeding her baby. Unfortunately, on the Overhead Cam, her back was to the camera obstructing the view, but on the Long Range Cam, the cam operator was able to zoom in for a minute to give us a peek of the feeding. With the wind being so strong, it was impossible to keep the cam zoomed in and them in view for long, but at least we know the Hawklet (eyas) has been fed and all is well at the nest.

Tom Brings an Opossum to The Nest 🌲 05/01/23 02:51
Tom flies in with a baby Opossum for Angel and his Hawklet (eyas). His instincts have now guided him in the right direction to be a good provider for his family.
