Tom Arrives at The Nest 🌲 05/01/23 09:40
Tom flies onto the nest and sees his second hawklet (eyas) for the first time. Things go a bit rough, as Tom being a young Hawk and a first-time Dad is a bit confused. He grabs at the hatchling a few times a bit rough, but also shows he knows the proper actions to do by sitting down on the nest over the hawklet (eyas) for warmth while doing a little preening. Angel arrives back at the nest and gives Tom another talking to as food is needed, then Tom flies off.
FYI: As there could be many different reasons for the actions we see out of Angel's mate, Tom, we have to remember he is a young Hawk and a first-time father. Each bird is different, and their behavior also depends on the amount of testosterone they have. Obviously, if they carry a high level of testosterone they will be more aggressive. With Tom, we have seen both sides. While he was rough with his hawklet, he also showed a soft and nurturing side. There is not one species of creature that I have seen through the years, that hasn't shown one side or the other, nurturing or aggressive. The reason for that is that it all depends on DNA and hormones, with various sub-factors along the way. This is a short article explaining the difference testosterone makes in a bird. There were other papers as well, but they were extremely technical and long and can be researched if needed. https://news.virginia.edu/content/study-shows-costs-and-benefits-testosterone-birds

Angel - Female, 7+ years of age, Leucistic (White)
Unnamed Mate- Male, 3+ years of age, Normal Coloration
Nest: 40 feet tall, 3 feet long x 1.5 feet wide, human-reinforced nest
Cams: Above the nest is a tiny pinhole cam so we don't intrude into the small nest, this cam does not have IR (night vision). We have a long-range PTZ cam in a distant tree, with IR and Mic.
Angel's Story (from cam link above):
Angel is a very rare Leucistic Red-Tailed Hawk. 2 years ago, Angel & Mohawk (no longer around) raised 3 chicks and they fledged successfully. Last year Angel chose a new mate and he was still a subadult. Since the new male was not fully mature, they did not have eggs last year. This year he has fully matured and their bond seems strong. Will post a view soon about the history of Angel and how we came to put in this very unique and rare camera.

WARNING-Difficult To Watch: Tom Returns To Make Amends 🌲 04/2923 08:06
After his prior actions at the nest, Tom returns to prove he has realized the mistake he has made by doing the most heartwarming action to prove he truly wants to be a good father, provider, and mate.
How the event unfolded as in a prior video posted on the channel:
Angel had left the nest when Tom arrives and sees his newly hatched hawklet (eyass) for the first time. With his back to the camera, he apparently moved the hatchling out of the nest bole when Angel arrives and proceeds to scream at him until he leaves the nest. This was done out of instinct as he is a new father and this was his first baby. He originally had to learn how to incubate as well. He is a good provider and a fast learner and sometimes in nature, we experience things we don't want to see but are necessary as a learning experience for an inexperienced parent. The good news is we now know the pair are fertile together and hopefully, we will see the second egg pip soon.

Dinnertime For The Owlets 🦉 04/27/23 19:22
The oldest owlet had been eating for quite a while, now it's time to feed the other two owlets and the baby makes sure to get its fair share. Trying to swallow a piece a bit too big several times, Mom lets the youngest owlet know to take the piece from her instead. As long as there is a sufficient supply of prey, a mother Great Horned Owl will always make sure each owlet is fed fairly. Feeding the first, and usually, the more aggressive owlet before the others will help to fill it up first, so feeding the remainder of the owlets will be less interrupted and also make sure they get a sufficient amount.

Ellie Shows Off Her Semiplume Feathers 🦉 04/19/23 18:28
Something sure has Ms. Ellie's feathers ruffled. 😄 As she sits there showing us a full view of the feathers underneath her tail, we see that they are the Semiplume feathers that help her to stay insulated and warm. Unlike the tail feathers, they lack the hook on the barbule part of the feather. Giving it that downey appearance. The tail feathers have a microscopic hook on the barbules to form a wind and waterproof barrier and also keep the feather contoured and uniform to help steer her in flight.

Ellie Rides Out a Sleet Storm 🦉 04/17/23 14:59
A spring storm hits the area bringing wind and sleet to the nest. Once more, Ellie endures the bad weather like a champ. Never once letting her owlets get cold or wet. Even as the sleet balls bounced off of her head. It's a good thing she has all those feathers to protect her. Over 10,000 of them in all.

Venturing Out From Under Mom 🐥 04/16/23 05:18
The oldest owlet ventures out from underneath Mom when Dad starts hooting off-cam from the branch. Today marks 8 days since the owlet hatched and the eye slits are starting to move. It usually takes 10 days to open their eyes and this little owlet is right on schedule. The Egg Tooth is still visible and should fall off in 1-2 weeks. What a Cutie! 😊
