Is spanking children as a punishment godly and something Jesus commands us to do, as parents? Whenever we read the Old Testament, we need to read it in light of what Jesus did on the cross - on His Finished Work on the cross. We need to remember that we are His disciples and we made the commitment to follow Him, meaning, to do what *He commands us to do. He teaches us in His Word to us, the New Testament of the Bible, that we do not follow the Law of God given to Moses for the children of Israel, but we are to pick up our own cross, let go of all the things we think are right, and choose to do the things He tells us are right - and spanking children as a punishment is not one of them. As Jesus' disciples, we need to understand how He explains the "rod of correction" referred to in the Book of Proverbs, in the Old Testament. If we look at Jesus’ earthly Teachings, we see that He corrected the religious leaders of His day all the time – even though they had access to God’s Word, even though they were required to memorize it, even though their lives were supposedly solely dedicated to God, according to Jesus, they completely misunderstood God’s Word. So if they didn’t understand what God meant – if Jesus (the Second Person of God, who is Omniscient) explained the Law and what God wants from us, if He risked His Life many times to deliver to us His Word (the Word of God), it isn’t wise at all for any of us to take the Book of Proverbs out of context, project our misunderstanding of it on God and declare “This is what God wants parents to do – to hit their children and make them understand”, and to literally disregard Jesus’ Word to us, His disciples when the commitment we made was to follow *Him. Thinking critically is essential when making decisions, and of course, Jesus teaches us exactly how to do that! The enemy's preferred method to attack us is with a distortion of God's Word, but Jesus makes us the Promise that if we do what He says, we WILL know the Truth, and the Truth WILL make us free! He teaches us exactly how to read the Bible - specifically because sin is blinding us to the truth, and the enemy will come at us with his distortions. Jesus teaches us that the enemy is the father of lies and there is not truth in him, but also that it's our part to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and be ready to punish ALL disobedience: be ready to get rid of ALL the enemy's lies that we have been believing and that have been keeping us away from living the life more abundantly that Jesus came and gifted us! Because of their abuse, I ended up suffering for a long time from complex post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia, until I turned to Jesus, started doing what He commands us to, and, as He promises to us, He healed me and set me free! The "Unoffendable" book by Brant Hansen is teaching us the truth about human anger and forgiveness! I picked up this book because when I turned to God in April 2019, I learned how to forgive from the heart from Jesus' Teaching in Matthew 5:44, which healed me of most of my symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia. But forgiveness was still a process for me, and I wanted to learn more about what Jesus teaches us about it, and about human anger - and whether there is righteous human anger or not! For most of my life, I used to believe punishment was the key to change and to do the right thing - but it never worked. I never got the results I wanted, as much as I tried. When I turned to Jesus and found out God doesn't punish even though He corrects us, I was surprised. Punishment is always about paying a debt - it is not a tool to bring change into the future. So God doesn't correct or discipline us by punishing us - but He does correct and does discipline us. On Judgment Day, He is going to settle all of our accounts and we will be rewarded or not, together with Him forever more or not! The most important relationship in our lives is our relationship with God. The way we relate to Him is essential to everything else, that’s why the enemy works overtime to distort His Word to us so that we misunderstand who God is and relate to Him based on the enemy’s lies, and not the Truth of God’s Word! We need to understand disassociate God from our sinful nature and see Him the Way He wants us to - based on His Word to us! We need to understand that God does not chastise us the way we think He does, but that His Discipline and Correction are very different than what we know from other people what discipline and correction is! Even though we, as humans, think correction and punishment are the same, God doesn't - and we need to learn from Him why that is! Learning the difference between love and codependency is the key to a healthy marriage and healthy relationships! One of my many symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia used to be codependency. In short, being codependent means the reason I was saying or doing something was to get a specific response from the other person – for example to avoid conflict, to make them feel a certain way so that then they would give me something or love me back. But then I met Jesus when I hit my rock bottom, right after my husband asked me for a divorce. And that’s when I started learning about unconditional love, which is, technically the only form of love that is actually love. Jesus gives us a powerful example of what it looks like to process our emotions as well as to not process our emotions in this parable! Processing our emotions is key in our lives as disciples of Jesus because the enemy has access to our fallen (unprocessed) emotions. Jesus teaches us exactly how to handle each situation, depending on what it is. In terms of anger – it is a God-given emotional response whenever sin is involved, but we must remember that emotions are responses to our perception of the reality, and not necessarily to the actual reality. Not only that, but we must process our anger right away or else it will turn into bitterness and wrath – and those are sins, according to Jesus’ Teachings, which means we are venturing out into the enemy’s territory, and he has the right to oppress us when we do! In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus teaches us what processing our emotions looks like, practically, and also what it looks like when we don’t go through these steps He teaches us we ought to. When someone does the wrong thing – how and when do we tell them? Jesus teaches us that it is impossible to not get offended in relationships, but when this happens, we must forgive the other person whether they apologize or not for offending us. Once we’ve forgiven them and have processed our emotions, Jesus teaches us exactly how to bring up this offense with the other person, and this Commandment is to us, individually, but it is for the benefit of the other person, and not our own. Once we processed our emotions and forgiven from the heart, the question is do we break up or continue the relationship? How do we know when to continue a relationship with someone who offended us, and when to stop contact? Of course, Jesus teaches us this, and reconciliation is one of the most impactful skills we can ever learn and it does start with forgiving from the heart. We need to keep in mind that Jesus came to bring us the Sword of the Spirit because we can’t figure out what the right thing to is on our own. But we can have total confidence that this is a skill we can master – as we are becoming God’s Masterpiece – by the Power of the Holy Spirit! The Seven Money Types is an awesome book that explains how God wired us, individually, to relate to money and bless others through it! I picked up this book because I wanted to know more about how God wired us differently to see money. The Seven Money Types is an awesome book that explains how God wired us, individually, to relate to money and bless others through it! I picked up this book because I wanted to know more about how God wired us differently to see money. Sometimes we’re told there’s just one way to look at money, but we are far too complex for that to be true. I lived most of my life having all sorts of toxic beliefs about money, so my intention was to find out what God says about it. The author has done a great job at not only explaining what the seven money types are, but really digging into our own types, including learning about our shadow side – the tendency for sin, and he also teaches us what to do about it instead! What about payback? When someone hurts us, they owe us a debt, and Jesus teaches us what to do about it! For the most part, when someone offends us, we feel like they owe us something now, at the very least an apology. And if they don’t apologize, we may start to think about how to pay them back – we may think it’s ok to withhold affection, be hostile, or passive-aggressive towards them. Of course, Jesus teaches us exactly what to do in this situation so that we stay in agreement with God and not venture into enemy territory!
