Grizzly Tales, Part 1
Thumbnail image generated by Cathy on Bing AI image generator, using a prompt of “mountain man being charged by a grizzly bear in the mountains”
Randy tells of an old friend, Roy Glasgow that had a run in with a grizzly bear and saved himself with his Bausch & Lomb binoculars back in the day! Bausch & Lomb even made an ad, featured at least in American Rifleman years ago.
Also, another grizzly attack happened when Roy was hunting with friend, Vern Spencer. Vern was attacked, and lived.
Finally, a friend of ours, Nate Vance, an outfitter, was attacked, and lived, through a middle of the night grizzly attack in their hunting camp a couple of decades ago.

Measuring for Pressure
“Today we are going to talk about measuring cases.”
An update on measuring cases, as there have been questions I want to address, though there is also a video on Patreon on this subject
This video goes into further detail.
This method of measuring for pressure was developed over 70 years ago by the late Vernon Speer. I’ve not found any better way to do so.
Sit down, take notes.
Whether you have a 1 inch tenth micrometer or a flat anvil micrometer, Randy instructs on the best method for measuring cases, rimmed or unrimmed, magnum or not, it is all done the same place, in the same way.

Words Have Meaning
Randy discusses how words should be used with their proper meaning, so there is clearer understanding of what is being discussed, in regards to reloading components, or factory ammo. Words and their meaning matter. For instance, loaded cartridges are not bullets, nor are they cases. They are cartridges.
Then another area were words have meaning is when people that should know better, i.e. hunters, outdoorsmen and women, use the terms antler and horns interchangeably. Poppy cock! There is a difference between the two. But consistently we hear them interchanged in hunting shows, talk about “horn hunting” [when they are looking for deer and elk ANTLERS]. In one case a deer was described, within minutes of each other, by same hunter on a hunting show, as having first horns, then antlers and back to horns. SMH!!

Cathy apologies for poor video contrast. It honestly, to my eye, didn’t seem that much different when I was filming. [Cataracts to blame I suppose?] I have adjusted as I could. The content is very good, so again, forgive my lack of good lighting.

.300's Compared
Randy starts off with a series of talks comparing similar cartridges, with a comparison of 4 of the .300 calibers: .300 Win., .300 PRC, .300 Wby., and .300 RUM.
How do they compare, given all using the same or similar loads?

New Action Offering
We are now offering another custom package [note: package means it is all-inclusive, no changes, other than caliber will be made] that will appeal to those many potential clients that have contacted us for a custom rifle, only to realize that is out of their budget.
With the economy in the shape it is in, we want to make a custom rifle option that is more budget friendly, WITHOUT sacrificing accuracy and quality.
We have found an action, Mack Brothers action, in long and short to be able to cover a wide range of calibers. Paired with the always top of the line Hart stainless match barrels, McMillan fiberglass stock [two options] and a Patriot Swampfox scope [please, don’t start on the China made comments, listen to the content on this video!] and Randy’s attention to custom load development, a client may have a full custom The Real Gunsmith/Randy’s Custom Rifle rifle, at a cost anywhere from $1000-$2000 less than the other current options.
Remember, not everyone has big bucks to spend for a full custom rifle, or expensive scope, but still want top accuracy and to “get in the game”. That is who we are reaching out to with this custom offering.
Contact us for current pricing and turnaround time.

Load Density is Just One Aspect of Accuracy
Much has been made lately of loading density, and some claiming it is “the” top aspect for accurate loads. However it is just one of many aspects that all need to meld together to make up an accurate load for any caliber.

Why I Love What I Do
Randy has been building rifles, working up loads, experimenting with new calibers since he was a whippersnapper. And he still loves what he does. He says a day is wasted if he is not learning something new, but so far, no day is wasted. Much of what he has done over the years has not gone unnoticed and a friend coined the name “The Real Gunsmith” based on his experience, knowledge and expertise. This video is a bit of “the rest of the story” from his first video ever produced, about his life experiences.
Randy learned from some of the old top hands in the business, had great mentors, and learned to work on all types of actions, Springfields, Enfields, Mausers, Winchesters as well as Remington actions and many others. Sadly, most ‘smiths only know how to work on Rem. or Rem. foot print actions.
He enjoys a variety of jobs each day, has the blessing of living where he loves, with his wife of nearly 46 years.

Terminus Action Rifle Build
An update on the custom rifle builds we offer based on the excellent Terminus Kratos Lite action, 3 lug bolt, receiver and bolt finished with DLC treatment which makes it very durable, very smooth and sharp looking. McMillan Hunter stock in McWoody marble shown here; Hart match stainless barrel, our muzzle brake, quick release floor plate, Talley scope rings, Picatinny scope bases and, as always, our preferred choice of a Leupold scope.
This rifle shot a .342 group with a handload made for this rifle.
All of Randy’s rifle builds are offered with a complete load work up, specifically for that individual rifle. Not something that is just worked up for any rifle of that caliber.
Randy is not confined to just this action. His offering is so much different, as he can and has built rifles on Rem or Rem foot print action, but he also builds on any type of action. Mauser, Springfield, Enfield, Win actions, pre and post 64, etc.
He will build rifles with McMillan stocks, [no chassis, please!], other options, such as laminate stocks, but also makes full custom wood stocks, pieces of art work that will be heirlooms to pass on, checkered or not. He takes pride in his work.
Rifles in light weight, heavy weight, bench, takedown, heavy game, and has a wide selection of configurations toto choose from, in a wide variety of calibers.
Send an email to Randy at randyselby@randyscustomrifles.com to discuss with Randy an option for YOUR rifle build.

Sheep Hunt with Sons
Randy tells about hunting sheep with both of our sons, for youngest son’s sheep tag a number of years ago.
The three of them, Randy, Flint and Landon, with their 8 horses and one mule, head to the back country of WY for Landon’s sheep hunt. That was unsuccessful, just didn’t see an animal he wanted. Later Landon and Randy went back in, but not quite so far, and Landon filled his first sheep tag.
Included are photos from their hunt.

No More Car Sick Dog
Does your dog get car sick? THIS IS NOT A PAID PROMOTION! Our dog, Anson Eddy, now a 9 year, 4 month old bluetick hound, [April 2023] was rescued with a brother in the summer of 2013. The poor pup got violently ill on the way home. And despite all of the old-wife tale remedies, many, many tries of holistic and Rx [over the counter and prescribed] meds, he would get terribly car sick. Within ¼ of a mile the drool, in buckets, would start. Depending on the remedy tried, he’d vomit at least twice, with dry and not so dry heaves. Yet he always wanted to go with us on a ride in the vehicle. However, the only time he got to go was to the vet. He had to be doctored up 45 minutes before leaving, and on an empty stomach. Still, lots of upchucking. He gets to go on walks, or along on mule/horse rides behind the place when we don’t have to use a vehicle. In December of 2022 Cathy came upon an ad for NoMoNausea bands for dogs on Amazon. For the price, it was decided “what the heck”. And it works MIRACULOUSLY!! He even went on a 250 mile Jeep ride with us recently, no car sickness at all. The band fits on a foreleg, between the tendons, about 2” above the wrist [and above the dew pad to keep it from slipping down]. Again, this is NOT a paid promotion by the company. We just want others that may have a dog that uncontrolled car sickness to benefit as much as Anson Eddy has. https://nomonausea.com/collections/dog It can be purchased on Amazon, also.

Shop History & Knowledge Base
FYI: Photos never shared before, throughout the video.
It seems that some keyboard warriors have recently decided, after watching Randy working at a lathe, that he has no knowledge of how to operate a lathe or chamber a barrel using 3 lug center chucks.
That is absolutely so far from the truth. Unfortunately, too many “machinists” have some areas lacking in their education and don’t understand the methods that Randy uses, which are, frankly, spot on, top accurate method for chambering barrels.
So Randy put together this video, for those who think he may not know what he is doing, after decades of running a lathe for his shop, but also for shops like Burris Scope Company, and Speer, CCI. Where, son of a gun, they found out his method of chambering barrels was much better than the methods they’d used over the years for their test rifles.
A bit more of a history of Randy’s experience than shared before. He is one of the few gunsmiths that builds custom rifles on a wide range of action types. He offers a wide range of rifle types and calibers for clients to choose from.

Rebore, Rerifle and Rechamber

The Grizzly Conundrum
Really, Randy? Yellowstone National Park killed enough grizzlies to lead to the need for them to be put on the Endangered list? Yes. Read Playing God in Yellowstone Park by Alston Chase, available on Amazon and from other book sellers.
Though the # of our grizzlies that are growing all of the time, there is also a # of the grizzlies killed each year by USFWS, State Game departments, and accidents, the conundrum of “when to delist” will not be reached by game management practices, but through the courts or legislation.
There is also the conundrum of “do as I say, not as I do” mentality of FWS and Game departments.
In the meantime, the grizzlies are expanding their range all of the time, because of the sheer number of them. It is not, as some claim, to be a human conflict issue because of “encroaching development” because the size of the National Forests and the size of the National Parks they live in have NOT shrunk, nor do they have “encroaching development”.
In the last “season” from mid-May, through mid-Oct we either saw or saw evidence of 6 grizzlies and 2 black bear, within 100 yards of the house. That is more than the previous 29 years, combined.
A post script by Cathy.

A Takedown in .338 Win. & .416 Ruger
Randy shows a two barrel/fore end laminate stocked rifle he made for a client in .338 Win. and .416 Ruger on a Ruger 77 Mark II action, left hand Both barrels are equipped with a muzzle brakes machined into the barrels, as with an 8 lb rifle, they will be needed to handle the kick. Both barrels are equipped with sights The action is double square bridge action to accept Ruger rings. As always, Randy recommends a scope for each barrel/caliber, with Q. D. rings, so the scope will be sighted in for the particular barrel/caliber, for no fuss transfer. This set is sufficient for taking nearly all game that any hunter would like to harvest. This is a Boyd’s laminated rosewood stock [well, two stocks, as we needed the second one for the second fore end].
As with all multi-barrel takedown rifles, the calibers must be of the same case head size to fit the bolt.
See this video on how the takedown for instructions on how it is “taken down” and reassembled.

Let Freedom Ring
[Apology for the blooper, left it in for comedic relief, CS.] Randy and Cathy, both, urge you all to get busy checking out each and every political leader in your area, state, and federal representatives. The “I don’t need to get involved” mantra has to be trashed and we ALL need to hold those in service accountable.
The ABC agents that are descending on different gun shops, we know of in MT and FL, so it is probably happening other places because Brandon wants to eliminate our 2nd Amendment rights.
Not mentioned, consider, if you don’t like the way things are going on the local, state or federal level to run for county/parish commission, school board, Precinct Committee Man or Woman and DO SOMETHING. Write, call, query, challenge them all. Hold them accountable. Let them know what you want to see done.
Be respectful [it is HARD with some of them!] but firm.
We cannot be waiting for someone else to do it all. It is late, but not too late. Remember those that come after us, our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. We owe our own generations and those coming up to return our country to greatness.
And vote! No candidate is going to be perfect. But vote to contain and reverse evil.
God bless the USA! Let Freedom Ring!
Thank you all for your support.

Pioneers of Long Range Hunting
Randy delves into the true pioneers of long-range hunting, not the johnny-come-lately entities that are claiming that status. Randy tells of the early long range and extreme long range hunting pioneers, started way back in the 1950’s.
Do your own research and you will find modern companies aren’t the pioneers in this field.
And is this a field to brag about? Hardly. Leave the long-range shots to inanimate targets, not our game animals or even varmints. Too often those animals suffer.

Sheep hunt with Flint
In the summer of 1988 Yellowstone National Park was hit with the worst wildfire season in recorded history. A total of 793,880 acres were burned, not counting the 10’s of thousands of acres burned in the surrounding forests. It was into this smoke-filled landscape that Randy guided our oldest son, Flint, on his first sheep hunt.
At that time, youth could not apply for big game licenses until they would be 14 during the hunting season. Flint didn’t turn 14 until a few days into October, so he missed out on the first month of the big horn sheep hunt. Much of the hunt was undertaken in very poor conditions with thick smoke and low visibility.
Randy shares their adventures. He also praises Flint’s passion for hunting big horn sheep to lead him to become a great big horn sheep guide for several of the local outfitters for a number of years, before one died in a tragic accident. Later he moved to Alaska and it is hoped he’ll eventually have a chance to add an Alaska sheep hunt to his credit. Flint shares some of his photos. One is of the sheep he got on this hunt, two are of from scouting trips he and Randy took years later, and others from a few of his other adventures scouting and guiding for sheep hunts.

A Black Bear Hunt
Randy shares his story about black bear hunt. Many of you have requested more hunting stories, and we thank you. This bear hunt took place in NW WY when it was legal to bait bears. It is also the hunt where he decided carrying his Colt .38 Special, Officers Model, was not the handgun he’d take on a hunt again, because of lack of penetration in finishing off the bear. While the photo in the thumbnail is not the bear that this story is about, it is one of Randy’s black bear from back in the day
