A Black Bear Hunt
Randy shares his story about black bear hunt. Many of you have requested more hunting stories, and we thank you. This bear hunt took place in NW WY when it was legal to bait bears. It is also the hunt where he decided carrying his Colt .38 Special, Officers Model, was not the handgun he’d take on a hunt again, because of lack of penetration in finishing off the bear. While the photo in the thumbnail is not the bear that this story is about, it is one of Randy’s black bear from back in the day

Specialty: Hunting Rifles
https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cathyselby Just started to help Cathy, The Real Gunsmith's Wife with production and all that entails.
Randy’s life has been hunting and building hunting rifles. As a young man he was passionate about hunting, for himself and guiding for the family business. He was also fascinated with all things to do with hunting rifles, ballistics, and accuracy.
He shows some of the rifles he’s owned and built over the years. And while the rifle he built for the cartridge he developed for himself is shown, he does not chamber to it for anyone else, as it is a multi-step process and at this time he cannot get the brass that is best for this cartridge. He also highlights his .338x.404 Wapiti Express. Both of these rifles are built with full custom wood stocks, all done by hand.
Besides the rifles he highlights, is a bonus slide show, as he talks, of a small sampling of the rifles Randy has built over the years. While he mostly builds hunting rifles, he also builds tactical rifles, bench rifles, and varmint rifles. All on stocks, not on chassis.

Randy's 2023 Public Land Bull Elk Hunt
Randy tells about using his custom 7MMx.404 Wapiti Express rifle, with 175 Partitions, pushing 3240 fps, to harvest his bull elk for the fall of 2023 on public lands.
Though he did not use the two mares we rented for the season, after we lost both of our mules last year, old age and accident, at one point he called the mare he rode, “he”. No, the mare doesn’t identify as a “he”, but we are so used to having gelding horses and mules for decades, that we both slip up once in a while and call the mares “he”.
Later in the video Randy goes into more detail about his rifle [and sorry, no, he won’t build any rifles on his custom wildcat 7MMx.404 Wapiti Express, we can’t get brass for it]. He also talks about the differences among the 7MM’s.
Randy and another gentleman were one of the first to try the 175 gr 7mm Spitzer bullets on elk.
We also share Cathy’s recipe, a blend of 4-5 recipes for corned wild game, for the corned heart he mentions.

CORNED WILD GAME from Cathy Selby’s Kitchen: The Real Gunsmith’s Wife
This is a combination of several recipes that I found for corned wild game.
In a saucepan combine ½ cup brown sugar and 8 Tablespoons Morton Tender Quick [The only place I found this, locally, was Albertson’s with the salt]. 2 cups water. Stir and bring to a boil. Stir until dissolved. Cool to room temperature.
Add:
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 Tablespoons pickling mix [. It may be available at Walmart or other stores with their canning supplies.]
2 teaspoons ground red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon fennel seed
3 bay leaves, crushed
2 quarts water [+ or -, enough to cover meat fully]. Stir well.
3-5lbs. deer, elk or antelope, sheep, moose, buffalo…you get the idea…roast or heart well-trimmed.
Place roasts in LARGE GLASS jar or container [never plastic, ceramic or metal] and pour brining solution over to cover. Place lid or plastic wrap over container. Place in refrigerator. The recipes I used to combine for this mixture said anywhere from 5 days to 12 days, one even said 21 days. I went with the 12 days. In the meantime, every other day turn the roast[s] or heart. Do not use plastic or metal utensils. I used a large wooden spoon. For heart, which is denser, two full weeks works best.
When ready to remove from the brine, drain the brine from the meat. Rinse well. If you are going to freeze to cook later, pat dry, wrap and freeze. I have a LARGE glass container, that was a 36-volt battery container, so it is square sided. It fits well in the back of the fridge. I have had up to 5 large roasts in it at a time. That makes for hard turning so I just reach in and turn by hand.
For cooking: Slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours. Add a touch of brown sugar to the top of roast if desired, a bit of your favorite seasonings. Add, as desired: Cubed potatoes, carrots, celery, onion and/or cabbage, seasoned and added to roast. The meat is quite red even after cooking, that is normal. ENJOY! It is fantastic!! Even the veggies have a different and great flavor!
We chose not to corn this elk heart. Instead, I put it in the Instant Pot, on Pressure, and because of our 6,000 ft altitude, put the pressure time to 1 hour and 40 min, 10 min. more than Instant Pot recipes for large beef heart recommended. The heart is cut in half, lengthwise. Sprinkled with two T of white vinegar [as a tenderizer], salt, pepper to taste, about 4 T of brown sugar sprinkled on the open heart, also as a tenderizer. Then a medium white onion sliced on top. About 3/4 cup of water below the meat trivet. Delicious and fork tender.

Another Elk Hunt
https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cathyselby This has just started to help Cathy, The Real Gunsmith's Wife with production and all that entails.
Randy shares another memorable elk hunt with his custom .280 Rem., loaded with 160 gr. Nosler Partition, from some years ago. He had to stalk the elk for some time to get a good shot, for a successful hunt on a good, high 345 6 point bull.
The elk piled up in a snow chute, with lots of ice. Probably the hardest elk he’s had to get processed in the field!

Mack Brother's Action
A short video on the Mack Brother’s action we are using for many builds. Not only is it very well made, functions wonderfully, but it is the most reasonably priced action of any we offer. Also, the turnaround time is now quicker than it was earlier.
Some to the great custom actions we love to offer have gotten ridiculously long on turnaround time from point of order.
This action is a great alternative, and on one ordering a custom rifle built around this action will be disappointed.

6.5x.300 Wby
Randy talks about the origins of the 6.5x.300 Wby. This includes those early on, including Mary Louise DiVito, Howard Wolfe, the 6.5x300 WWH or Weatherby Wright Hoyer cartridge and others. Are they finicky, as some have reported? Are there limitations?
A bit of history on the 6.5 x 300 Wby.

Start of 7MM for Big Game
Randy talks about some of the history about 7mm’s being used for big game hunting. He was great friends with Les Bowman, who was instrumental in starting the use of the caliber for hunting big game in North America and later around the world.
Les worked with Remington to bring the 7MM out in 1962.
In 1984 Randy also created and developed his own 7mmx.404 Wapiti Express.
This is a longer video, watch it in segments if you must, to take full advantage of information shared.
Thanks for your support.

Predation on our Wildlife
Randy talks about how the effects of mismanagement of the large predatory animals specifically the Grizzly Bear and the Wolf in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has resulted in a severely diminished population of ungulate species, specifically moose and elk. If we don't do something the animals will be gone and so will hunting. Who else is willing to stand up and say/do something about this issue? NOTE: UPDATE: We had hoped to get this out before the WY primaries, however that didn’t happen, life got in the way. Unfortunately for WY and our wildlife, and many other aspects of WY that we hold dear, will be under the governorship of a Democrat in Republican clothing once again. Mark Gordon has ties to Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, to name a few very leftist groups. Harriet Hagamen will still be working on our behalf, in as yet unidentified capacity. Also, on Aug. 31st a Federal judge in MT put a stay on the first grizzly hunt in decades for 21 days, when he will issue another stay, it is anticipated. All based on emotions, not science.
UPDATE: A stay on hunting grizzlies has been ordered more than once since the publication of this video.
There is a trophy hunting season for wolves in NW WY, with limited quotas in different areas. The remainder of WY wolves are listed as predator and there is no license needed, nor any season, but open all year.

He goes on to make suggestions for the reloader on the best powders, bullets and weights, as well as cases to use to load for full potential. Please excuse that groaning in the background. Bullet Technology
Today Randy talks about bullet technology, using properly constructed bullets for hunting and shows us with cross sectioned bullets from different manufacturers why certain bullets are better than others to effectively and ethically take game. Randy also has examples of bullets recovered from game to show the difference on how proper hunting bullets perform in comparison to match grade target bullets that have become popular "hunting" bullets due to high ballistic coefficients. In Randy's long hunting career, he has experienced the harvesting of game with all sorts of bullets and has gained irreplaceable insight on which bullets work and which ones don't and shouldn't be used for taking game.

Bullets: Near, Far, Good & Bad
Randy’s focus is on the best bullets for taking game animals, the pros and cons of different bullet construction for nearer shots, and at longer distance, but with the condition that the extreme long range is not hunting but sniping.
Berger bullets and any target bullets are not the ideal hunting bullets.
While Randy mentions several videos or shows that have shown poor results shooting multiple times at game animals we WILL NOT share the links to those videos to only give them more views.
He mentions a very ethical outfitter that used to live near us and outfitted in this area. Both of our sons actually guided hunts for him and his wife. Griz and Ginger Turner are owners and outfitters of Raven’s Throat Outfitters of NW Territories. A big shout out to them for their ethical hunting practice of getting their hunters within 250 yards. Their hunting concession is over 6,000 square miles and their hunters have tremendous success. Check them out. https://www.ravensthroat.com/
