Ultralight Rifle with Defiant Action
Randy shows his Ultra Light hunting rifle in 7mm x .300 Wby. built on a #Defiant Anti action, with a #McMillan Edge, light weight stock, and a Leupold Freedom scope. This is built with function, durability, and precision for a great rifle a hunter can pack around all day without the fatigue of carrying a rifle even just a few pounds heavier. He does not sacrifice accuracy, however, with a super-light weight, thin barrel. In all the entire package comes in at 7 lbs, 3 oz. God bless!

More Important Than BC
Bullet construction, sectional density, hunting ability, common sense and other aspects count a lot more in importance in your hunting situations than BC does.
Honoring the animal you are going to harvest is more important. The logistics and not ego [which is driving most if not all of the extreme long range “hunting”, i.e., sniping] is what is much more important than BC.
If you are JUST target shooting, consider it. But those targets aren’t moving, living animals that can be wounded.
Randy segues into your responsibility to hunt with the welfare of the hunting community in general, but mostly for the welfare and respect for our game animals. Hunters need to leave their egos at home, the desire to see themselves on social media for “taking that extreme long-range shot”.
Where are the game departments, conservation organizations, magazines, hunters groups standing up for the dignity of the game that is being exploited in the extreme long range “sniping” craze?
Randy is not the only one upset with the WY Game and Fish:

6 8 Westerner vs .270 Win. SM
With the new 6.8 Westerner the company and some gun writers would have you think the two are totally different. But are they? Are they close enough to be interchangeable? Randy has some answers and some cautionary warnings.
And, yes, Randy calls it a "Westerner" rather than a Western, as it is so much hype, that is his way of mocking their hype.

Mind Boggling Misinformation
Randy shares some mind-boggling misinformation he’s been confronted with lately. We know if we are hearing this, others are, too. How wide spread it is, is anyone’s guess. But some misinformation can be very dangerous to the uninformed. If you know someone who doesn’t understand ballistics and firearms but wants to be a shooter, become a mentor or point them to the nearest shooting range admin. Help save someone!

Merry Christmas 2021
No, there are NO quality, professional videos/stills on this video. A few clips of deer sparing, birds feeding from a dish in my hands, mother and cub grizzly wrestling [from some distance with Park Ranger telling people to not stray from cars], big horn sheep lambs playing king of the mountain, and OH, Jubal with gloves on his ears. Just a bit of fun to share and wish you all the best. Thanks for following, viewing and being a part of our lives.

Ruger #1 and Sharps Actions
Randy shows his Ruger #1 with modification for top accuracy, as well as his Sharps 7x300 Wby made on an early Sharp’s action. Note that the rings he made for this Ruger were done over 30 years ago and he no longer offers this service.
Les Bowman, Randy’s mentor, and Bill Ruger worked on the early Ruger actions and Bill wanted Les to do a write up on them. Les refused as he saw some problems with the early models. Les and Randy discussed the issues and Randy came up with a way, using his own Ruger #1, to modify parts of the build
In 1969 Les was once again brought into the early development of the Sharp’s single shot action in the transition from Sharp-Borchardt rifle. Les and Mike Keesey from Sharp’s with Randy at the bench, tested out a number of the protypes at the range outside of Cody.

Randy's Trapping Stories
Randy tells a few stories of his trapping years, starting at 12, through his teens. The highlight was being pants by a coyote! He gives credit to the old-time trappers in the area, who made their living trapping, for passing on their knowledge to him. A later story, not of trapping, but of an antelope protecting her fawn from a coyote, is told.

Best LR Bullets for Game
Randy is often asked, though emails, comments, or calls, about the best bullets to use for long range hunting. As you know, his idea of long range and many others differs greatly.
He gives his recommendations and reasoning behind the recommendations.
Yes, you will hear “popping” noises from the fire in the fireplace behind him.

Pine Siskins & Rosy Finches
Cathy was excited to see the return of the pine siskins to the feeders, last seen in late fall. Because of the brisk temps and wind, they were not shy about fighting off the rosy finches. The pine siskins weigh in from 0.4 to 0.6 ounces versus the rosy finches can weigh, as adults, up to 2.11 ounces. That does not deter the pine siskins that wanted food, despite being greatly outweighed and out numbered. I hope you have as much fun watching the brief interlude this morning as I did feeding them. To feel their trust to eat off of plate and hand is thrilling. The siskins frequently lit on the hand on the camera and even on the camera strap. The finch lit on my feeding hand, as well as on shoulder and head. I was surprised to realize after a short while that I could tell which species was on my head by the difference in the weight!

How To Use A Rose Index
This video features the Rose-Index made by Timm Rosenthal of Rosenthal Products. https://rosenthalproducts.com.
He has asked Randy to use them and give an honest critic of the Rose-Index. Randy could tell by watching a video Timm has on his site that they would be very handy. After talking with Timm Randy agreed to feature the Rose-Index in a video review.
Timm was kind enough to send us the product and we want as many of our viewers as possible to see the Rose-Index.
Because of your loyalty and support, we wanted to give you first viewing “rights”.
Please, if you are a machinist, reach out to Timm and order the Rose-Index. You won’t regret it.
“The Rose-Index is a patented product, and the “Rose-Index” name is trademarked.”
Here is his website:
https://rosenthalproducts.com/ See Timm Rosenthal’s comments below in the description box.
Randy really enjoyed using this for machining the brake in the large barrel, as shown in the video. He knows he will get much use out of both sizes of the Rose-Index. Very well thought out, very well machined, produced and marketed.
Thanks for watching.

@RosenthalProducts
Randy- Thank you for the video I appreciate your efforts. I am glad you like my Rose-Index . I made a video on my “Rosenthal Products” YouTube channel showing all the forms of indexers I have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5aO1DIb7Mo&t=183s Over the years I have ended up with a significant investment in indexers trying to increase my shop’s capabilities and to be more efficient working with round parts. Even though I have a large variety of indexers they brought disappointment when I needed to do something quickly. Having all these forms of indexers, and being disappointed in them I knew I needed to re-invent the wheel a bit. The intent for this video is to show that I didn’t just create something to sell…….I created something in my shop that would make my day easier, and to hopefully save others similar disappointments. The Rose-Index is really much more than an indexer. I am working on videos to show various uses. Simply put the Rose-Index is a convenient tool that hardly takes up space in your tool box yet will really increase your machines capabilities. (My investment in indexers is collecting dust and taking up quite a bit of storage space.) In Randy’s video he needed a 30 degree index. There are a couple easy ways I do this. Process #1 (Using the Degree Wheel and machinist square) Step 1 - Place the Rose index on the shaft with the shaft protruding out just a thou or two. (This will keep you from scratching the face of the Rose-Index in step 4)
Step 2 - Line up the Rose-Index with the Vee pointing towards the operator. Push the machinist square into the outside of the square next to the Vee, and continue to push as the Rose-Index makes contact and centers itself up.
Step 3 - Tighten the set screw. (At this time the degree wheel will either have the 0 degree mark up and the 180 degree down, or vice versa.)
Step 4 - Rotate the part until your straight edge of the machinist square shows the 30 degree line and 210 degree line are inline. Process #2 (Using a Machinist Square and Adjustable parallel) Step 1 - Set the Rose-Index up with your machinist square using the “Hex” and tighten the set screw. (Just like Randy did in his video). You could also reference the machinist’s square to the square that is parallel to the hex. (Please note that all the shapes are machined during the same operation which creates great accuracy in each shape’s relationship to the others.)
Step 2 - Loosen your vise so that you can rotate your part
Step 3 - Rotate your part and reference on the hex of the Rose-Index with an adjustable parallel from the machines table.
Step 4 -Tighten the vise.
This works because you are changing your Rose-Index’s 60 degree reference by 90 degrees, which gives you a 30 degree change. Thank You and Best Regards, Timm Rosenthal

More on the 6.8 Western
First of all, yes, Randy calls it the Westerner. It is his colloquialism for a cartridge he feels there is a lot of ado about not much. So, please, save the comments that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He does know that of which he speaks. And, on that note, yes, “irregardless” IS a word, though less standard form of “regardless” and has been in dictionaries since 1922. Deal with it. [The Real Gunsmith’s Wife]
Second, before content description, this video is the last one you will hear occasional groans and moans from our dear old bloodhound, Duke, who was very vocal when he changed positions. You can often hear him in the background. We had to say good-bye last month. He was, of all the hounds we’ve had, the best for keeping track of us on walks and rides in the mountains, for being compliant with all of the treatments he had to have of eyes, ears, gums, and more recently, knee repair surgery. He dealt with Canine Lupus for the last 9+ years of his nearly 11 years of life, and on our insistence he was treated more holistically than the normal protocol. Thus, he had a much longer and better life than he’d have had otherwise. He made us smile and laugh, daily, for the nearly 10 ½ years we had him. A big hole is left in our lives. In loving memory.
Randy discusses why the 6.8 Western, though bullets with high BC, is lacking due to construction, thin jacketed and with plastic tips, is not the game bullet it is hyped to be. He breaks down an article in the last #ShootingSportsRetailer magazine by Wayne Van Zwoll, who compares the 6.8 Western to two other cartridges. What was right and what was off base.
