How I Spend My Day as a Digital Marketer
How I spend my day as a digital marketer. Getting your work done isn't enough if you want to succeed as a digital marketer. What makes the life of a digital marketer complicated is algorithms.

From Facebook to Google, to Instagram to even LinkedIn, pretty much all platforms have their own algorithm. And the issue isn't that they have a algorithm, it's more so that they continually change their algorithm.
In 2020, Google made more than 4,500 algorithm updates. That's roughly 12 updates a day! Now, as time goes on, Google makes even more algorithm updates. So this year, you can expect way more than that.
Now, you don't have to keep up with each and every single algorithm change, but you have to keep up with the major ones. Either way, it's a lot of work, but as a digital marketer, you can't spend all your time focusing just on algorithm changes. There's much more to do. And here's how I spend my days.

5 Hacks for Small Businesses to Outrank Larger Ones
Five hacks for small businesses to outrank larger ones. How can you compete with those big guns when it comes to SEO? If they already have a better domain authority than you and they have the fingerprints all over the best search queries in your vertical, it can seem like it's impossible to outrank them, right? Well, no, that's wrong. You can outrank them.
That means not just going after the biggest, most important keywords within your industry that has major players already sitting at the top. Because if you do that, it's going to take a very long time. You're going to be playing their game and it's going to be harder to win. What you need to do is make them play your game. Remember, these are big brands that we're talking about here, massive corporations. And, although they're stocked with resources, they're not agile.
Let's dive into five ways that your small business can supersize your SEO strategy and maybe even compete with some of the biggest names in your industry.
RESOURCES & LINKS:
____________________________________________
Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________
Hack number one, focus on UX or user experience. Think SEO and UX don't go hand in hand? Think again. Google pays attention not just to keywords and links, but how people click on your website. And if your UX is terrible, you simply will not rank really high.
Hack number two, work on your social presence. Two tips in a row don't even include SEO. Strange, right? Except both UX and social media can play a central role in your SEO just not in your traditional way. Just think about it this way, those big name competitors might have a monopoly on the major keywords that you want to rank for, but anyone can go viral. Building your brand on social media can still drive a ton of traffic to your website and branding is one of the most important factors in SEO.
Hack number three, use canonical tags. Need to avoid duplicate content? It's an absolute SEO must. And the big companies over time tend to create a lot of content on the same topic over and over and over again, which causes Google to be ensure which page to rank for a popular keyword. For example, if I have a page on the Beginner's Guide to SEO, and then I have another post on A Guide on How to Get Started with SEO, both are pretty much the same thing. They're talking about how to do SEO or get started if you're a beginner. So Google doesn't know which one to rank.
Hack number four, optimize your local listings. Remember what I said earlier about how almost half SEO searches are local ones? That just goes to show how important local SEO is. A huge part of it is to create local search listings, especially for small businesses. Remember, you can't just go from big industry head keywords that everyone is searching for from day one. Focus on what you can control, your local listings. This should include high quality images, up-to-date hours, extensive product listing, and specific creative content that reflects your brand and what you have to offer. Any inconsistencies with your local SEO listing can create issues for you, not just with Google crawling and listing your page, but with your audience actually not being able to find you.
Hack number five, write detailed content and refresh it often. I want to emphasize the refresh it often. You want to stand out in your niche? Becoming a thought leader is hard work, but it can pay off big. And writing a lot of content, especially long form content, with high quality keywords and links is essential to get ahead, but you also need to refresh that content on a regular basis. That's what a lot of big companies don't do.
Remember Google prioritizes experience, so not just refreshing content, but getting your message out as short and as quick as possible. Sometimes that could be in 100 words, sometimes that could be in 500 words. Sometimes that needs to be 5 or 10,000 words.
And if you keep refreshing your content, although I mentioned this time and time again, it can really get you a lot of traffic. Now, I also want you to check out your competition's content about similar keywords and make sure you are trying to find new ways to outrank them and assert yourself as an industry leader.
Now that you know these five hacks, you should be able to really take off when it comes to SEO and beat these big companies that have bigger brands than you. Trust me, I've done it and it works. We do it at our ad agency, NP Digital, for both large companies and even startups to midsize companies.

7 Social Media Metrics You Need to Track
Social Media has a lot of different ways to track the metrics and it’s importing to know where to put your time and effort. But which numbers? I have 7 key metrics that I always track.
0:00 Intro
0:55 Metric #1 | Reach
1:45 Metric #2 | Impressions
2:25 Metric #3 | Engagement Rate
3:04 Metric #4 | Amplification Rate
3:37 Metric #5 | Virality Rate
3:52 Metric #6 | Audience Growth Rate
4:15 Metric #7 | Social Referrals
4:45 Bonus Metric | ROI

You might be on every single meaningful social media site out there but all your effort isn't really worth anything unless you're tracking what's driving your results and what's not. Trust me, there have been plenty of times I post something out there and I thought that was great. Well, I gained no traction. Sure, I may have gotten some likes or impressions but those things really didn't help my business grow. So, what do I do after a post like that? I go to the numbers.
So metric number one, reach. Reach is the number of people who see your content. It's always important to ask yourself two main questions with this one, whether or not you're reaching enough people. If you're reaching enough people why aren't they converting? Pay attention to an important subset of your reach. If you're targeting the wrong type of people you may want to adjust your content, look to see what some of your competitors do so that way you can target the right people and generate more sales.
Metric two, impressions. Meta saw impressions grow 10% in 2021. But when you think about this, if these social networks are seeing their percentages grow, your percentages should also grow. But on the flip side, if their percentages are decreasing and yours are decreasing, you're like, wait, I'm not getting as many impressions. What am I doing wrong? Well, let's say a social platform's, you know, impressions decrease by 20%, but your impressions maintain flat. That means you're doing something right. If they're actually gaining users, you would be doing better, but that's why tracking impressions is super important.
Metric three, engagement rate. The easiest way to figure out how you're doing on all the social networks is go look at your competition, see their engagement rate with how many likes and comments they're getting per post based on how many followers they have. If you're doing better than your competition, you're doing good.
Metric four, amplification rate. The ratio of shares per post to the overall number of followers. So, you want to really look at this because you can see what kind of content is helping you and which content isn't really getting you the amplification that you're looking for. You want to create more of the content that is getting you the amplification and less of the content that isn't getting you much of it.
Metric five, virality rate. Similar to amplification in that it measures how much your content is shared, but virality rate calculates share as a percentage of the impressions rather than as an impression of followers.
Metric six, audience growth rate. How many new followers are you getting on social media over a certain period of time as a percentage of your total audience? Here's a tip for you. If you want to grow your audience fast, get on TikTok. It's the fastest growing social network with 105% user growth in the US over the last couple years.
Metric seven, social referrals. According to HubSpot, consumers are 71% more likely to make a purchase based on social referrals. Now, social referrals are huge because it's other people vouching for you saying your product or your service is good. Think of it as a version of review or a rating on Amazon. That's the same concept with let's say, social referrals.
Now, a bonus metric for you and this is the most important one which is why I really want to save it for last and this would technically be number eight, is ROI. What is your ROI on social media? What posts are getting you the most return versus which posts are generating very little to nothing? And you can track this in Google Analytics. You can set up goal and conversion tracking. Also, when someone completes a lead form or a purchase or buys a service from your signs up you can also survey them and ask them how they find you and where they signed up from.

Do This Email Marketing Strategy for 100 Days
Are your emails actually getting open? Are your subscribers actually clicking on the content you're sending? If they're not getting open, and your click-through rate is just in the gutter, it's time to change things up.
00:00 Intro
01:04 Step 1 | Scrub Your List
02:08 Step 2 | Personalize Your Messages
03:04 Step 3 | Segment Your Audience
03:40 Step 4 | Test, Test, Test!
04:10 Step 5 | Automate When You Can

89% of markers use email as their primary channel for lead-generation, and 22% of markers actually report click-through rates of over 20%, versus the industry average of 10.69%. So, if you want sky-high click-through rates, it's attainable. You just have to execute the right strategy. Here are few simple steps that you need to implement ASAP, for the next hundred days, so that your email campaigns can be successful.
Step one, scrub your list. Here's the thing. You want your list to keep growing bigger and bigger, right? If you keep sending emails to people who don't open up your email, even if they don't mark it as spam, even if they don't unsubscribe, but if they don't open up your email. So offer solutions like Gmail and Outlook, will start putting your emails in other people's spam boxes. So you want to unsubscribe. In other words, scrub your email list, remove people that don't engage with your email list. It's the easiest way to get your emails delivered in the inbox for everyone.
Step two, personalize your messages. We found that, when we personalize our subject line in our emails, we get open rates of up to 74% more. So, you can do little things like putting the person's name in the subject line, right? That's an easy way to personalize it. Or you can make your subject line all lowercase. See, when someone's sending you a business email, a lot of times, they use the correct capitalizations, and punctuations, but when a buddy just sends you an email, it's just short, to the point. A lot of times, it's sloppy, but those kind of subject lines, they get a lot of opens, such as, like, if I have a buddy named John, and then I saw something cool, my subject line will be like, John, check this out. It's short, it's simple, but I know my buddy John will open it.
Step three, segment your audience. When you segment your email list, you can do things like, buyers versus non-buyers, people who have added things to their cart, but have not completed. We found that, when you segment, you generate more revenue, versus non-segmenting. For example, if you're already a repeat buyer, and you're on my email list, why would I send you the same email I would send someone who hasn't ever made a purchase? You'd be like, I already bought that. Why are you sending me an email on that? That's why segmenting is really important.
Step four, test, test, and test some more. Test out copy. Test out your design and button variations. More than 50% of markers use A/B testing to boost conversions. Look, just because I'm telling you what's working for our clients at our ad agency, NP Digital, doesn't mean it's always going to work a hundred percent of the time. You have to test, 'cause it's a little bit different for every single industry, and every type of list. And if you just want my team to do all this testing, and email marketing for you, check us out at npdigital.com.
Step five, automate when you can. Trigger-based emails are super-effective. Open rates for trigger emails can be highest, 49% from what we've seen, such as, they buy this. You may send another email, with a upsell or a downsell. That's a really effective trickle-based email.

In a year marked by economic fluctuations and uncertainties, the resilience of consumer confidence remains evident as individuals approach the holiday shopping season with a steady outlook. Forecasts indicate that the familiar jingle of cash registers will resonate with a consistency mirroring that of previous years, with neither a significant surge nor a decline in overall spending.
This neutral stance in holiday spending is reflective of a broader economic landscape where consumers are navigating carefully through fluctuating market conditions. As inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions continue to make headlines, shoppers appear to be adopting a pragmatic approach, perhaps weighing the allure of festive indulgence against the backdrop of economic caution.
What emerges is a narrative of stability, as shoppers strive to strike a balance between celebrating the season and being mindful of their financial well-being. The familiar rituals of gift-giving, decorating homes, and partaking in seasonal festivities are set to endure, with a subtle undertone of moderation in the air.
RKeenly attuned to these consumer sentiments, are adjusting their strategies to align with the prevailing trend. From promotional campaigns to inventory management, businesses are gearing up for a season where the keyword is not extravagance but rather reliability – a reflection of the collective mindset that permeates the holiday shopping landscape.
As shoppers prepare to embark on their seasonal shopping journeys, the prevailing sentiment seems to echo a harmonious refrain – a commitment to festive joy, tempered by a pragmatic awareness of economic realities. In this delicate dance between celebration and moderation, the forthcoming holiday season promises to be not only a time of joyous festivities but also a testament to the enduring spirit of stability in the face of uncertainty.

You probably know at least a little about SEO, but there's a way you can even take things even further and fully optimize your website so it performs better with search engines. It's called All in One SEO, and it's one of the best plugins you can install for your WordPress site.
Here's how it can help your website, feature number one, set custom SEO titles and meta descriptions. You can control SEO settings on a per page basis, set an SEO title and meta tag manually, you can preview how it looks in search results on either the desktop or mobile. With advanced settings, you can also set up a canonical URL, include other meta tags, and configure additional settings. Now, when you're optimizing your meta description title tag, keep in mind you want to include keywords. You want to do a search on Google for the terms you want to rank for and see what other people are using for both the title and description, 'cause it'll give you ideas. With your title, short and to the point is better than using up all the characters. We've found that shorter title tags under 50 characters tend to get more clicks compared to using longer ones. In many cases, we even find ones that are under 40 characters perform better. And with your meta description, make sure it's compelling so people want to click through and read the rest.
Feature number two, on-page optimization. Simply enter a focus key phrase and the plugin will make sure your content has been properly optimized, evaluating keywords in your title, meta description, URLs, intros, subheadings, and even more. It also checks content length, internal and external links, title tag length, and other essential SEO factors.
Feature three, readability analysis. Remember, Google factors in how useful and user-friendly your content is. All in One SEO checks images and visuals, paragraph and sentence length, passive-voice usage, transition word, and repetition.
Feature four, customized search result appearance. Take full control of what your posts and pages look like in search engines. This is super important because the last thing you want to do is write this masterpiece, but then have your post look terrible in the search engine results page.

My Favorite Keyword Research Strategy
Want to know how I find keywords that bring me tons of traffic? It's maybe the most important part of nailing your SEO strategy. 68% of online activity starts with a query in a search engine like Google or Bing. Identifying the right word to include in your content is essential.
And according to Ubersuggest 89% of the keywords get only 10 monthly searches or fewer. And according to Atrex, only 0.16% of the most popular keywords are responsible for 60% of all searches. What does that tell you? If you want your keywords to actually show up in your audience searches, you have to choose them extremely carefully. SEO is not a strategy where you can guess and hope for the best. Want me to tell you my favorite keyword strategy? Well, let's dive right in.

Moz: https://moz.com/
SEO Unlocked: https://neilpatel.com/training/seo-unlocked/
Ubersuggest: https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/
____________________________________________
Step one, keyword discovery. This can be the most difficult part about the process but you need to get it right. I see a lot of beginners make mistakes in this phase. Maybe they'll choose really broad targeted words or obscure phrases that no one is searching for. That's why I love using keyword research tools like Ubersuggest or even Answer The Public. So once you head over to Ubersuggest, all you have to do is import a phrase and click search. You'll get a detailed breakdown that includes search volume, which is the number of searches per month, SEO difficulty, estimated competition for organic search, paid difficulty, estimated competition for paid search, cost per click.
But the best part, scroll down and you'll see plenty of variations of the keyword phrase you search for. If you're on a tighter budget, optimize a low competition, low cost per click option that still gets you good results or choose a few different ones and A/B test them to see what kind of results you're getting by running some Google paid ad campaign.
And then from there, use the five keyword idea variables to expand your search. Seeing the Ubersuggest search results page, you'll see suggestions, related, questions, propositions and comparisons. These are all tabs that you can click on to get even more keyword ideas.
Step two, analyzing and choosing the best keywords. Ready to narrow down your results from step one? I like going with no more than a hundred keywords for this part of the process. Eliminate the obvious ones that you don't want to use. Ubersuggest can help you see what page is ranked for for the keywords you want to use, plus how many back reads those pages have, and how many shares they have on Facebook and Pinterest and Reddit.
You can also narrow down your target keywords with Moz. If you have a pro membership or if you just have one keyword project to complete, you can always start a 30-day free trial. You can use their keyword difficulty and SERP analysis tool as well.
Step three, make final choices. The last crucial step. There are four critical components for making your final choices, but first keep a spreadsheet throughout the process and make sure you're recording every single piece of data that you want to use later on. Once you have your spreadsheet, organize it, make the following considerations. If your website is commercial, go with keywords that have commercial intent.
Find keywords that offer the sweet spot of high search volume plus low difficulty and minimal competition. Use keywords with high search volume with competitors that have lower domain authority and back reads.
This might seem like a ton of information but making that final decision isn't the most difficult. If you've done the research and compiled the data, the hard parts are already basically done.
Plus, if you have some informational keywords left over, you can always use them for other content topic ideas. If you have more questions about how to conduct better keyword research, check out the training courses I've created such as SEO Unlocked. You can find these all at NeilPatel.com/training.
I want you to put these keywords in practice so that you can have high rankings, not just for your blog post pages but all the webpages and start driving traffic and sales in no time. Again, the key is to use keywords in your content. From blog posts to webpages, if you don't integrate them in within your content whether it's your title tags, your meta tags, or just within your text or your headings, you're not going to do well.

My 6 Favorite Productivity Hacks
So how do I keep myself from getting overwhelmed? And how do I make sure that I'm hitting deadlines, driving growth for my company, and making sure that everything is getting done? Well, I try to explore so many ways to increase my productivity, and here are some of my favorite productivity hacks.

01:16 Delegating
02:08 Understand the Power of “No”
02:39 Tame Your Inbox

Hack number one, schedule shorter meetings. Look, the longer your meetings go, the less likely you are to be efficient. I block off 30 minutes for meetings max and when I'm doing phone calls, I try to keep my phone calls to 15 minutes. Not 30-minute phone calls, none one-hour phone calls, I try to keep 'em short. Because what happens is when you have your meetings or phone calls too long, people ramble and they waste time and they don't actually prepare in advance. When they're short, people know that they don't have as much time, so they prepare before they join the phone call.
Hack number two, delegating. When it comes to running my ad agency NP Digital, my goal is this: be more essential, but less involved. Now that doesn't mean I'm spending less time. I'm actually spending probably 60-plus hours a week on my ad agency, but I'm trying to get other people to continually do well so that way they not reliant on me. I try to focus more of my time on strategic directions, setting priorities, and providing helpful feedback versus acting as a bottleneck. When you hire smarter people and you continually grow, we have roughly 750 people, things can't be reliant on me, or else we're not going to perform well. And that's why I built a system in which people don't necessarily need me. Sure, I'm still there. They're not reliant on me, but I'm still there and I'm still cranking away and I'm energized each and every single day, but I'm not the bottleneck now.
Hack number three, understand the power of no. I say no to certain kinds of speaking engagements all the time. Not because I don't want to do them, not because they don't have the money, not because it won't help me grow, it's just there's certain ones that are better for the business versus others, and you can't do them all. So I look for the right type of speaking engagements. Before, I used to just go and speak based on whoever could pay me the most amount of money, now I speak whatever is best for the business. And I chooses less engagements, but better engagements with more people in the audience that are my ideal customer.
Hack four, tame your inbox. I spend at least 30 minutes in the morning answering emails, and that's the first thing I do when I wake up. Look, I don't want to go to sleep with a ton of emails that I got to answer the next day, so I try to keep my inbox clean and I spend five, 10 minutes here and there whenever I'm free or in the car, not doing much, or going to a business meeting, so that way I don't have a full inbox when I go home, and I can spend more time with my family.
Hack five, batch creation. When I create content like this, I shoot a little bit more than a month's worth of content in three to four hours. When I write a blog post, I write a blog post every Sunday, sometimes Saturday, depending on my schedule, and that way, I know that hey, my blog post that I publish is coming up on Tuesday. I write it in advance, and if I have time, I try to do two or three of them. When I record my podcast with my co-host Eric Siu for my podcast Marketing School, if you haven't checked it out, make sure you subscribe, with Marketing School, we record 10 episodes at once. It takes us less than an hour to record 10 episodes.
Hack six, automate when you can. Automation for content creation is real easy. There's a lot of tools, like Ubersuggest, AI tool. There's a lot of tools out there when it just comes to AI that marketers are releasing. And what you want to do is automate as much as possible. Even using simple tools like UiPath, you can get a lot more done in the same amount of time each and every single day because it'll automate a lot of those mundane tasks that you're used to.

As someone that posts regularly on just about every meaningful social media platform, I see all sorts of crazy takes everywhere all the time. And the one that absolutely drives me crazy, because of how untrue it is, is social media marketing doesn't drive bottom-line results. That's just flat-out wrong.
For a lot of the old-school business owners, they just assume that social media marketing is something that kids are on and their brand social media presence is basically set up to keep up appearances and maintain some kind of online presence. But the reality is that social media marketing can drive tons of traffic leads and conversions, period. Don't believe me.
Here are a few stats that show you what a big fat lie that, hey social media marketing doesn't provide results really is. 34% of consumers use social media to learn about brands and their products and services. In essence, people love figuring out what products and services to use based on what they see on the social web. 70% of marketers use Facebook ads and there were 10 million active advertisers on the platform last year. 83% of people used Instagram to discover new products and 87% said that they would took a specific action after seeing more information. 64% of buyers would rather send a message to a brand on social media, then call customer service. And 43% of Gen Z consumers have made a purchase from social media platforms. 79% of people say that UGC impacts their purchasing decisions.
Look, that's a lot of stats. So if you think that social media marketing isn't important, you're dead wrong. It really does help. What I want you to do is first off, go on all the major social platforms that your ideal customers on, whether that's LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, all the main ones.
Two, I want you to post at least one time a day. And yes, you can repurpose the content they use for one social network for others. You may have to adjust it here and there, but that's what I want you to start off with.
Three, when people leave a comment on your social profiles, I want you to respond to 'em, engage with them and take care of 'em. By taking care of people, it creates amazing word-of-mouth marketing and it creates a lot of brand evangelists.
Four, look to see what content that you're posting resonates and what content doesn't. Post more of this stuff that's working for audience and less of this stuff that's not working.
And five, last but not least, what I really really want you to do is go look at Facebook's ad library. You can see what a lot of your competition's doing with their Facebook campaigns and this will give you ideas on what can also work with both your organic and paid social campaigns.
