Biden wants G7 to forge alliance against china
US President Joe Biden is to urge Western countries to counter China's growing influence at the second day of the G7 summit, an aide told the media.
At the meeting in Britain, President Biden is expected to call for a new alliance to rival Beijing's spending on infrastructure in developing countries. The US and its allies accuse China of forced labour and other human rights abuses in Xinjiang province.
G7 leaders will also commit to a new plan to stop future pandemics. The measures include cutting the time needed to develop vaccines and treatments for Covid-19 to under 100 days.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hosting the three-day gathering at the seaside resort of Carbis Bay in Cornwall.

Teen who filmed George Floyd's murder given award
A teenager who filmed the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer has been given a special journalism award by the Pulitzer Prize board. Darnella Frazier, now 18, was awarded the citation for her courage, the Pulitzer committee said.
Her film spurred protests for racial justice around the world and was used as evidence in the trial that convicted police officer Derek Chauvin. The Pulitzers are the most prestigious journalism awards in the US.
The committee said they honoured Ms Frazier for "courageously recording the murder of George Floyd, a video that spurred protests against police brutality around the world, highlighting the crucial role of citizens in journalists' quest for truth and justice."
Ms Frazier came across the arrest of Floyd while walking with her cousin in Minneapolis on 25 May last year.
She told a court earlier this year that she started recording the incident on her phone because "I saw a man terrified, begging for his life".
Ms Frazier described hearing Floyd "saying I can't breathe'. He was terrified, he was calling for his mom".

33,000 Tigray children risk death from hunger
About 33,000 severely malnourished children in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are at high risk of death, the UN children's agency Unicef has warned. Tigray has been devastated by fighting between government forces and rebels, with 1.7 million people displaced since the conflict began in November 2020.
A UN-backed study released on Thursday found that 353,000 people in the region were living in "severe crisis". The Ethiopian government disputes the finding, saying aid is getting through.
According to Thursday's assessment, the food situation in the region has reached the level of a "catastrophe", which it defines as starvation and death affecting small groups of people spread over large areas.
Unicef is calling for humanitarian access to cut-off areas in Tigray.

California jury awards $15m over lost fertility clinic eggs
A California jury has awarded $14.9m (£10m) to five patients who lost frozen eggs or embryos in a 2018 storage tank failure at a fertility clinic.
The cryogenic tank malfunction at the Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco ruined some 3,500 eggs, embryos and other genetic material. The jurors found a tank production defect was largely to blame. This is the first case to see an award for victims of a fertility clinic freezer problem, lawyers say.
Three women and a couple will share the nearly $15m award after losing their frozen eggs and embryos, respectively. The tank manufacturer, Chart Industries Inc, will pay 90%, with the clinic being held liable for the remaining 10%.
A Chart-made tank at the centre lost liquid nitrogen for a short period of time, which led to the destruction of some frozen material, the centre said.

Israel ex-top spy reveals operations against Iran
The outgoing head of the Israeli spy agency Mossad has given a revelatory interview about the country's operations against Iran. Yossi Cohen gave details about the theft of Iran's nuclear archive. The warehouse raid in 2018 ferried tens of thousands of documents out of the country to Israel.
He also hinted at Israeli involvement in the destruction of Iran's nuclear facility at Natanz, and the assassination of a nuclear scientist. Mr Cohen retired as the head of Mossad last week. He spoke to journalist Ilan Dayan on Channel 12's Uvda documentary programme, which was broadcast on Israeli television on Thursday night.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Mr Cohen as Mossad chief in late 2015. He joined the agency in 1982 after studying at university in London, and told the programme he had had "hundreds" of passports throughout his career. The most revelatory moments in the interview were about the theft of Iran's nuclear archive.

China has created a dystopian hellscape in Xinjiang
The human rights organisation Amnesty International has said China is committing crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, the north-western region that is home to the Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. In a report published on Thursday, Amnesty called on the UN to investigate, saying China had subjected Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other Muslims to mass detention, surveillance, and torture.
Agnès Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty International, accused Chinese authorities of creating "a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale". "It should shock the conscience of humanity that massive numbers of people have been subjected to brainwashing, torture and other degrading treatment in internment camps, while millions more live in fear amid a vast surveillance apparatus," Ms Callamard said.
She also accused the UN Secretary General António Guterres of "failing to act according to his mandate".
Mr Guterres "has not denounced the situation, he has not called for an international investigation", Ms Callamard told the media. "It is incumbent on him to protect the values upon which the United Nations has been founded, and certainly not to stay silent in front of crimes against humanity," she said.

China show off as Zhurong Mars rover takes a selfie
China's Zhurong rover has sent back a batch of new images from Mars - including a "selfie". The robot, which landed in May, positioned a wireless camera on the ground and then rolled back a short distance to take the snap. To Zhurong's right is the rocket-powered platform that brought the six-wheeled vehicle to a soft touchdown. Both display prominent Chinese flags.
A second image, taken by the rover, shows the platform on its own. Visible is the ramp down which Zhurong had to drive to get on to the surface; and the tracks it left in the dust as it turned around. A third picture looks out to the horizon from the landing site. This region is known as Utopia Planitia, a vast terrain in Mars' northern hemisphere.
All the images were released by the Chinese space agency in a ceremony to celebrate the success of the rover mission.

Biden warns Russia as he opens foreign trip in UK
US President Joe Biden has launched his first official overseas trip with a warning to Russia that it faces "robust and meaningful" consequences if it engages in "harmful activities". Mr Biden made clear his intention to strengthen ties with US allies, following strained relations under the Trump administration.
President Biden arrived in the UK on Wednesday. He will meet PM Boris Johnson to agree a new "Atlantic Charter". The pact will be a modern version of the one agreed between Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt in 1941, with a focus on challenges including climate change and security.
The media says the two are aiming to refresh a vital relationship, after the turbulence of the Trump years and the pressures of the pandemic. During a packed eight-day European visit Mr Biden will meet the Queen at Windsor Castle, attend a G7 leaders' meeting, and join his first Nato summit as president.
At the end of his trip Mr Biden is due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva.

Nigeria's Twitter ban: Donald Trump hails Buhari
Former US president Donald Trump has praised Nigeria's government for banning Twitter after it deleted President Muhammadu Buhari's post for breaching its rules.
"Who are they to dictate good and evil, if they themselves are evil?" Mr Trump said in a statement. He urged other countries to ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing "free and open speech". Mr Trump was banned from both platforms after the US Capitol riot in January. His posts before and after the raid were alleged to have encouraged violence.
While Twitter made its ban permanent, Facebook announced last week that its suspension, including of the former president's Instagram account, would last at least two years.

Biloela: Australia pressured to free refugee family
Australia is under pressure to release a refugee innocent family from a Christmas Island detention centre after their three-year-old child had to be medically evacuated to the mainland.
Tharnicaa Murugappan was taken to a Perth hospital after being unwell with a fever, vomiting and dizziness. Advocates say she has since been diagnosed with sepsis and pneumonia, and is in a stable condition. But they criticised the delay in obtaining adequate medical care.
Tharnicaa had been sick for about 10 days before authorities took her to the hospital on Christmas Island, and later transferred her to Perth.
Her mother, Priya Nadesalingdram, said she had repeatedly asked for antibiotics or hospital treatment, but doctors gave her only paracetamol and ibuprofen pills. The three-year-old's medical evacuation has reignited public concern for the family's welfare. They have been detained for more than three years.

Israel approves flag march through Jerusalem's Old City
Israel's outgoing government has said a flag march by Israeli nationalists through Jerusalem's Old City can happen next week pending police approval.
The event had been due to take place this Thursday. But organisers cancelled it after Israeli police rejected the proposed route through the Muslim Quarter, citing security concerns. Palestinians see it as a provocation.
The militant group Hamas has warned the march could trigger a new round of conflict in Gaza should it proceed.
At least 256 people were killed in Gaza and 13 people were killed in Israel during 11 days of fierce fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants last month.
After a meeting on Tuesday, the cabinet of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the flag march could go ahead on 15 June "in a format to be agreed between the police and the parade's organisers".

Tax details of US super-rich allegedly leaked
Details claiming to reveal how little income tax US billionaires pay have been leaked to a news website. ProPublica says it has seen the tax returns of some of the world's richest people, including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Warren Buffett.
The website alleges Amazon's Mr Bezos paid no tax in 2007 and 2011, while Tesla's Mr Musk paid nothing in 2018. A White House spokeswoman called the leak "illegal", and the FBI and tax authorities are investigating. ProPublica said it was analysing what it called a "vast trove of Internal Revenue Service data" on the taxes of the billionaires, and would release further details over coming weeks.
While the BBC has not been able to confirm the claims, the alleged leak comes at a time of growing debate about the amount of tax paid by the wealthy and widening inequality.

Kamala Harris under pressure about US-Mexico border issue
Vice-President Kamala Harris has faced pressure to visit the US-Mexico border, as she tackled a record migration spike on her first official foreign trip. Ms Harris had a testy exchange with a news anchor who asked why she had not gone to the US' southern boundary.
Members of Ms Harris' own Democratic party meanwhile assailed her after she warned against illegal immigration. Some 178,000 undocumented migrants arrived at the border this April, the highest total in more than two decades.
The vice-president's staff initially said the border was part of Ms Harris' portfolio when US President Joe Biden assigned her in March to stem migration from Latin America. But aides have recently been seeking to distance her from the politically toxic crisis.
While recent public polling suggests a generally favourable view of the Biden administration's policies on the economy and pandemic, its handling of the immigration crisis has proven less popular.

Kamala Harris tells Guatemala migrants: 'Do not come to US'
US Vice President Kamala Harris has urged would-be migrants in Guatemala not to try to enter the United States illegally. Speaking on her first overseas trip since taking office, she said the journey north was dangerous and would mainly benefit people smugglers.
Ms Harris warned people they would be turned back at the border. She has been tasked by President Joe Biden with controlling a surge in migration at the southern border.
Ms Harris has described her task as finding solutions to tackle the root causes of the border crisis, including corruption and the lack of economic opportunities. Her staff say this first visit is primarily an information-gathering trip.
In a news conference alongside Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, she warned against illegal migration to the US, saying: "Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders."
She added: "If you come to our border, you will be turned back."

ANOM: Hundreds arrested in massive global crime sting
Law enforcement agencies say they have arrested hundreds of criminals around the world in a three-year operation, using a secure messaging app run by the American FBI.
The operation, jointly conceived by Australia and the FBI, saw the app ANOM secretly distributed among criminals, allowing police to monitor their conversations without their knowledge. It has led to arrests in 18 countries.
They include suspects linked to the mafia and organised criminal groups. Drugs, weapons and cash have also been seized. Australia said it had arrested 224 people as a result of the operation, and had acted on 20 "threats to kill", potentially saving the lives of a "significant number of innocent bystanders".
The country's prime minister called the sting a "watershed" operation that had hit criminal gangs globally.
"[It] has struck a heavy blow against organised crime - not just in this country, but one that will echo around organised crime around the world," Scott Morrison said in a press conference.
New Zealand, which detained 35 people, called the operation the "world's most sophisticated law enforcement action against organised crime to date". The FBI and Europol will present more details later on Tuesday.

UNICEF warns G7 countries
Millions of Covid vaccines could be wasted if rich countries send large amounts of leftover doses to poorer nations in one go, UNICEF has warned.
The charity said there needed to be a steady supply throughout the year because poor countries do not have resources to use them all at once. The UK and others have promised to donate their surplus doses - but they have been asked to give more earlier.
Stars including Billie Eilish and David Beckham are backing UNICEF's plea. The celebrities have signed a letter to the G7 group of rich countries - including the UK - asking them to donate 20% of their vaccines by August.
"The pandemic will not be over anywhere until it is over everywhere," said Beckham.
The other stars who have signed the letter include Andy Murray, Olivia Colman, Ewan McGregor, Liam Payne, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, Gemma Chan, Whoopi Goldberg, Claudia Schiffer and Chris Hoy.

Chinese birth-control policy for Uyghur births | The Daily Update

Chinese birth-control policy for Uyghur births
Chinese birth-control policies could reduce the ethnic minority population in southern Xinjiang by up to a third over the next 20 years, according to new analysis by a German researcher.
The analysis concluded that regional policies could cut between 2.6 and 4.5 million minority births in that time.
China has been accused by some Western nations of genocide in Xinjiang, partly through forced birth-control measures.
China denies the allegations, saying birth-rate declines have other causes. The new research, by Adrian Zenz, is the first such peer-reviewed academic study of the long-term population impact of China's crackdown on the Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang.
It found that under China's birth-control policies in the region, the population of ethnic minorities in southern Xinjiang would reach somewhere between 8.6 and 10.5 million by 2040, compared to 13.1 million projected by Chinese researchers before Beijing's crackdown.

Kim Jong-un against slang, jeans and foreign films
North Korea has recently introduced a sweeping new law which seeks to stamp out any kind of foreign influence - harshly punishing anyone caught with foreign films, clothing or even using slang. But why?
Yoon Mi-so says she was 11 when she first saw a man executed for being caught with a South Korean drama. His entire neighbourhood was ordered to watch.
"If you didn't, it would be classed as treason," she told the media from her home in Seoul. The North Korean guards were making sure everyone knew the penalty for smuggling illicit videos was death.
"I have a strong memory of the man who was blindfolded, I can still see his tears flow down. That was traumatic for me. The blindfold was completely drenched in his tears. "They put him on a stake and bound him, then shot him."

G7 tax deal doesn't go far enough, campaigners say
A landmark deal struck by rich nations to make multinational companies pay more tax has been criticised by campaigners for not going far enough. G7 finance ministers meeting in London agreed to battle tax avoidance by making big companies pay more tax in the countries where they do business.
Tech giants firms likely to be impacted have welcomed the new rules. But the charity Oxfam says an agreed 15% global minimum corporate tax rate is "far too low" to make a difference.
The deal announced on Saturday between the G7 group of wealthy nations - US, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Italy and Japan, plus the EU - could see billions of dollars flow to governments to pay off debts incurred during the Covid crisis.
UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, who hosted the summit, said the agreement would create "a fairer tax system fit for the 21st Century".

Burkina Faso attack: More than 130 killed
Armed men have killed over 132 people in an attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso, the country's worst attack in recent years, the government says. Homes and the local market were burned during the overnight raid on Solhan.
No group has said it was behind the violence, but Islamist attacks are increasingly common in the country, especially in border regions. The UN chief said he was "outraged" by the incident.
António Guterres "strongly condemns the heinous attack and underscores the urgent need for the international community to redouble support to member states in the fight against violent extremism and its unacceptable human toll," his spokesperson said.
The Burkinabe President Roch Kabore declared three days of national mourning saying, in a tweet, that "we must stand united against the forces of evil". The security forces are currently looking for the perpetrators, he added.

TB Joshua: Influential Nigerian preacher dies at 57
Nigerian preacher TB Joshua, one of Africa's most influential evangelists, has died at the age of 57.
A post on his Facebook page, which has more than five million followers, said: "God has taken His servant".
He was said to have died on Saturday shortly after conducting a live broadcast, but the cause of his death has not been made public.
Tens of thousands would attend his services, with top politicians from across Africa among his followers.
But his teachings and practises were also controversial.
In April, YouTube suspended his account due to allegations of hate speech after a rights body filed a complaint over videos showing the preacher conducting prayers to "cure" gay people.

G7: Rich nations target Microsoft, Amazon?
Finance ministers from the G7 group of leading economies are confident of striking a deal on taxing multinational companies at their meeting in London.
The agreement is expected to include a global minimum rate of corporation tax. It would target tech giants such as Amazon and Microsoft.
German finance minister Olaf Scholz said the deal would "change the world". He said a 15% rate would help pay back debts that have built up during the pandemic - and that he was "absolutely confident" there would be an agreement.
"If we agree on the minimum taxation for corporates, this will help to go out of this race to the bottom we see with taxes today," he told the media.

G7 Summit meeting updates
World leaders including US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are expected in a Cornish resort next week. They will be there to hold face-to-face meetings during a summit of G7 nations.
The G7 (Group of Seven) is an organisation made up of the world's seven largest so-called advanced economies. They are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the United States.
Russia joined in 1998, creating the "G8", but was excluded in 2014 for its takeover of Crimea.
China has never been a member, despite its large economy and having the world's biggest population. Its relatively low level of wealth per person means it is not seen as an advanced economy in the way the G7 members are.
Representatives from the European Union are usually present and India, South Korea and Australia have been invited this year.
