Hurricane Nicholas hits Texas bringing flash floods and destroying buildings
TROPICAL Storm Nicholas became a Category 1 hurricane after it made landfall in Texas on Monday night, but has since been downgraded again to a tropical storm.
Now, Louisiana braces for heavy rain and threats of flash floods as Texas deals with widespread power outages.
Nicholas strengthened as it closed in on the Gulf Coast, threatening to bring heavy rains and life-threatening flash flooding.
Trackers correctly predicted that it would make landfall by Monday night as the storm grew stronger as it moved toward the coastline.
The NHC warned of "life-threatening storm surge inundation" along the coast of Texas from Port Aransas to San Luis Pass.
Texas Gov Greg Abbott tweeted on Sunday night that the state had already begun mobilizing resources due to the threats of heavy rains, winds, and potential floods posed by Nicholas.

DETECTIVES have launched an investigation after a gunman opened fire on a car leaving two men pouring with blood.
Terrifying footage shows the moment the men were shot at by a gunman riding on the back of a bike in Kirkdale, Liverpool.
Three men appear to get out of the car and flee the scene on Stanley Road just after midnight on Wednesday.
A gunman then seems to fire off a series of shots at all three men as they crouch behind the car for cover. All three manage to escape the scene on foot, before the gunman runs out of sight still shooting.
The car then slowly drives away after three of the occupants have dived out and fled the scene. Cops have confirmed that two men self presented at Royal Liverpool University hospital in the early hours with gunshot wounds.

North Korea: Military parade features hazmat suits, gas masks
North Korea has held a military parade to mark the communist state's 73rd founding anniversary, but did not display any major ballistic missiles. State media photos of the night-time parade showed marching soldiers and workers in hazmat suits instead.
Leader Kim Jong-un, who looked visibly slimmer, was seen among the unmasked crowds hugging children. North Korea is suffering from food shortages and a deepening economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Thursday, state media released images of fire trucks, tractors, and fireworks at the parade.
One section of the parade marched in what appeared to be bright red hazmat suits and gas masks, which may be a sign that a special force has been created to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, according to our correspondent.
North Korea's parades serve two functions. On some occasions, they can be a way to show off new military hardware and ballistic missiles to the outside world in defiance of international sanctions.
But most are a means of shoring up domestic support, especially in difficult times. It is a way to boost morale and encourage the crowds to watch the mass displays of strength and cheer them up with fireworks, even if in some parts of the country they have empty stomachs.
The special red hazmat unit is especially curious and would suggest Pyongyang is keen to show its people that even as the country claims it has no cases of the virus, the constant battle against the spread of Covid-19 goes on.
Pyongyang has held three parades in the space of 12 months - unusually frequent even for North Korea. Just think of the risk of gathering the masses of unmasked crowds in the capital during a pandemic in a country which has yet to receive any vaccines.
For whatever reason, Kim Jong-un must be making the calculation that the risk is worth it.

Afghanistan: Women beaten for demanding their rights
"We want equal rights, we want women in government," dozens of female protesters chanted as they marched down a street in Kabul on Wednesday.
A day earlier, the Taliban had announced their interim cabinet of ministers. There are no women in it, and they've also abolished the women's affairs ministry.
"We cannot accept this, and that's why we came out," Sara (name changed) told the media. It was the second demonstration she was participating in over the past week.
"We were marching peacefully. Then I saw 4-5 vehicles with about 10 Taliban fighters in each of them, following us," said Jia (name changed), another protester.
The women say they were stopped, lashed with whips, and beaten with batons that emit electric shocks.
"They struck my shoulder twice. I could feel pain all over my body. It still hurts and I can't move my arm," Jia said. "They also used a lot of bad words and abused us. It's too shameful for me to repeat the names they called us."

Covid: North Macedonia hospital fire kills at least 10
At least 10 people have been killed in a fire at a hospital treating Covid-19 patients in North Macedonia.
Footage shared on social media showed a building in flames and a thick cloud of black smoke billowing into the air near a main road in the city of Tetovo. Firefighters reportedly extinguished the blaze less than an hour after it broke out at about 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
Health Minister Venko Filipce warned the number of casualties could rise.
"This is a very sad day," he wrote on Twitter, adding that several patients had been "urgently transported" to a hospital in the capital Skopje. "Doctors are fighting for the lives of the injured," Mr Filipce said. He described the fire as a "terrible accident", but provided no further details.
It is unclear how many patients were being treated at the centre in Tetovo when the incident occurred. The temporary facility was reportedly constructed last year to care for people made seriously ill from the coronavirus.
North Macedonia has a population of about two million people.
The country has reported more than 180,000 cases of Covid-19 and 6,153 coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Paris attacks 2015: Historic trial of 20 suspects to open in France
An historic trial is beginning in France over the 2015 Paris attacks which left 130 people dead.
The shooting and bombing assault by Islamist State (IS) group extremists was the worst post-World War Two atrocity in France. The only surviving attacker, Salah Abdeslam, will appear in court with 13 other defendants at a purpose-built facility in Paris.
The trial is being described as the biggest in France's modern history. Over the next nine months, there will be over 140 days of hearings involving about 330 lawyers and 1,800 civil plaintiffs. About 300 witnesses will be heard, including survivors and François Hollande, French president at the time of the attacks.
Ahead of the trial, Mr Hollande told French media that this was an important moment for the victims of the attacks, which he described as an "act of war" at the time. IS admitted carrying out the attacks on the Bataclan concert hall, a major stadium, restaurants and bars on 13 November, 2015.
Philippe Duperron, who lost his son Thomas in the Bataclan attack, said there were mixed feelings about the trial, not least impatience and anxiety.
"It will be the occasion for all the victims to bear witness, so it will be a very painful moment, and bring back the pain again," he said. One survivor, Jerome Barthelemy, said he wanted to hear how other victims had been coping since the attacks but didn't expect the accused to speak.
Of the 20 suspects on trial, six are being tried in absentia. They are facing charges of murder, complicity and terrorist conspiracy. Most of the accused, including Abdeslam, could be sentenced to life in jail if convicted.Abdeslam, 31, is accused of providing logistical support to the assailants. Abdeslam fled the scene of the carnage after abandoning his suicide belt, which investigators later found to be defective.

Afghanistan: Don't recognise Taliban regime, resistance urges Anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan have asked the international community not to recognise the new government announced by the Islamists on Tuesday.
The interim cabinet - which has no women, and consists entirely of Taliban leaders or their associates - has also been criticised by the US.
Fighters opposing the Taliban in the Panjshir province said the new government was "illegal". The US expressed expressed concern at figures linked to attacks on US forces. The interim cabinet is led by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, who is on a UN blacklist. Another figure, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is wanted by the American FBI.
The NRF said it considered the announcement of the Taliban's caretaker cabinet "a clear sign of the group's enmity with the Afghan people". The Taliban insist they have now defeated the National Resistance Front (NRF) in the Panjshir Valley north of Kabul, but NRF leaders say they are still fighting.
In a statement, the US state department said it was concerned by the "affiliations and track records of some of the individuals".
The statement said Washington would "continue to hold the Taliban to their commitments" to allow safe passage for foreign nationals and Afghans with travel documents, "including permitting flights currently ready to fly out of Afghanistan".

Flooding hits Mexico hospital, killing 17 patients
At least 17 patients have been killed after heavy rainfall caused flooding at a hospital in Mexico's central Hidalgo state, officials say.
They say a river burst its banks and water then cut the power supply at the hospital in the town of Tula.
Some of the victims were Covid-19 patients who were being treated with oxygen therapy, local media report.
Rescuers evacuated about 40 patients. Meanwhile, a boat transporting the state governor sank in the river.
Omar Fayad later tweeted that he was "safe and sound", adding that the state authorities would continue co-ordinating emergency operations in the affected areas.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he was "very saddened" by the hospital deaths.
He urged residents of low-lying areas to move to shelters or stay with relatives or friends in safer places.
More than 30,000 people in towns across the state have been affected by the floods.
Separately, two people died after flooding in Ecatepec, a northern suburb of Mexico City, the authorities said.

Italy equal European unbeaten record in draw with Bulgaria
Italy's homecoming after winning Euro 2020 ended in a disappointing draw with Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying in Florence. The point did extend Italy's unbeaten run to 35 games, equalling Spain's old European record.
Federico Chiesa blasted Roberto Mancini's side into the lead from outside the box. Atanas Iliev, who plays for Ascoli in Serie B, scored the equaliser against the run of play.
Italy dominated, with 27 shots to Hungary's four, but Ciro Immobile's effort cleared off the line was as close as they got. They top Group C with 10 points from four games, four points above Switzerland, who have only played twice.
Third-placed Northern Ireland won 4-1 in Lithuania.

Afghanistan: Facebook says it helped people flee, including staff
Facebook has told the BBC that it took part in an effort to help 175 citizens leave Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country.
The company said some staff members were also on the flight to Mexico City.
The Mexican government confirmed the flight was carrying activists and independent journalists along with their families, including 75 children.
Multi-national companies and organisations have continued to pull out of Afghanistan.
"In the process of assisting Facebook employees and close partners leave Afghanistan, we joined an effort to help a group of journalists and their families who were in grave danger," a Facebook spokesperson told the BBC.
"Thanks to the leadership of the Mexican government, and the support of the UAE in providing the initial landing, the journalists have been welcomed in Mexico," the company added.
The firm declined to give any further details due to the ongoing security situation in Afghanistan.

The top US general has described the Taliban as a "ruthless group" and says it is unclear whether they will change.
Gen Mark Milley said, however, it was "possible" that the US would co-ordinate with the Islamist militants on future counter-terrorism operations.
US forces withdrew from Afghanistan on Tuesday, ending America's longest war 20 years after launching an invasion to oust the Taliban.
The Islamists are now in control and expected to announce a new government.
Gen Milley was speaking alongside US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, in their first public remarks since the last troops left Afghanistan.
US President Joe Biden has been widely criticised over the abrupt manner of the withdrawal, which led to the unexpected collapse of the Afghan security forces the US had trained and funded for years.
The Taliban's lightning advance sparked off a frenetic effort to evacuate thousands of foreign nationals and local Afghans who had been working for them.
In the news conference on Wednesday, both Gen Milley and Secretary Austin praised the troops who had served in Afghanistan and the massive evacuation mission.
Asked about their co-ordination with the Taliban in getting evacuees to the airport, Mr Austin said: "We were working with the Taliban on a very narrow set of issues, and that was just that - to get as many people out as we possibly could."

Texas abortion law: US Supreme Court votes not to block ban
The US Supreme Court has refused to block a new law in Texas that bans abortions for most women.
The so-called Heartbeat Act bans terminations after the detection of what anti-abortion campaigners call a foetal heartbeat - a point when many women do not know they are pregnant.
The law gives any individual the right to sue doctors who perform an abortion past the six-week point.
Rights groups had asked for an injunction to prevent its enforcement.
But in a late night vote, the Supreme Court justices ruled 5-4 against granting this.
The court's majority said their decision was not based on any conclusion about whether the Texas law was constitutional or not, and that the door remained open for legal challenges.
All three of former President Donald Trump's Supreme Court appointees voted against blocking the ban. One of the court's six conservatives, Chief Justice John Roberts, joined the three liberal justices in dissent.
Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor called the court's order "stunning".
"Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights and evade judicial scrutiny, a majority of justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand," she said.
