Delhi riots: Activists held over citizenship law protests leave jail
Two prominent female activists have left an Indian jail 48 hours after a court ordered their release on bail. Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita had been kept in as police wanted time to verify their addresses. The judge in Delhi said this was "not plausible".
The students had joined a protest last year against a controversial citizenship law, a day before deadly riots broke out in Delhi. They were arrested in May 2020 under a stringent anti-terrorism law.
"We have received tremendous support inside jail and we will continue our struggle," Ms Narwal told reporters outside Tihar jail.
She and Ms Kalita are founding members of Pinjra Tod (Break the Cage), a popular student movement that wants women to reclaim public spaces. Granting bail on Tuesday, the judges had criticised the government for confusing the right to protest with terrorist activity.

Kim Jong Un confrontation with the US
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said his country needs to prepare for both "dialogue and confrontation" with the US, and "especially to get fully prepared for confrontation".
This marks the first time Mr Kim has directly commented on President Biden's administration. North Korea had earlier snubbed efforts by the new US government to establish diplomatic communication.
Mr Kim was speaking at a meeting of senior leaders in Pyongyang. The ruling Workers' Party central committee meeting started this week in the capital Pyongyang.
Mr Kim said they needed "especially to get fully prepared for confrontation in order to protect the dignity of our state and its interests for independent development", as well as to guarantee a peaceful environment and North Korea's security.

82 million displaced despite Covid: UN refugee agency
The number of people who have been forced to flee their homes around the world has risen to a record 82 million despite the impact of the pandemic, the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) says.
The total has doubled in a decade and means more than 1% of the world's population is displaced. The pandemic had led to a significant reduction in asylum applications and overall migration, the UNHCR said.
But the 11.2 million people displaced last year was still more than in 2019. Many were forced to flee because of persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations.
The vast majority were internally displaced, with travel restrictions leaving them less able to cross international borders.
Meanwhile, only 250,000 refugees were able to return to their countries of origin and only 34,000 were able to be resettled in third countries, the UNHCR said in its Global Trends Report.

Iranians vote marred by disqualification row
Iranians are voting to elect a new president, with all but one of the four candidates to succeed Hassan Rouhani regarded as hardliners.
Opinion polls suggest Ebrahim Raisi, a conservative Shia cleric who heads the judiciary, is the clear favourite. Moderate former central bank governor Abdolnasser Hemmati is his main rival.
Dissidents and some reformists have called for a boycott, saying the barring of several contenders left Mr Raisi with no serious competition.
Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast his vote early on Friday morning in Tehran and encouraged people to go the polls. "Each vote counts come and vote and choose your president," he said. "This is important for the future of your country,"
There is widespread discontent among Iranians at the economic hardship they have faced since the US abandoned a nuclear deal with Iran three years ago and reinstated crippling sanctions.

Covovax, Biological E - India's new Covid-19 vaccines
India has ramped up its coronavirus vaccine production amid a deadly second wave of infections that is now abating. It is preparing to use a local version of Novavax vaccine, which will be produced by the Serum Institute of India.
The vaccine was more than 90% effective in a late-stage US-based clinical trial, according to the company. The government has also ordered 300 million doses of another vaccine from Indian firm Biological E.
India has so far given more than 260 million doses of three approved vaccines - Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V.
With the total case tally of more than 29 million, India is now only behind the United States which has reported over 33 million cases. With 17.5 million cases, Brazil is now at number three.
The country is also only the third in the world to record more than 300,000 deaths - behind the US and Brazil.

Major Australian banks hit by website outage
Several Australian banks and US airlines suffered website crashes on Thursday, following an issue with the web services company Akamai.
Customers reported problems with banks including ANZ, Westpac, St George, ME bank, Macquarie Bank, Allianz, and the Commonwealth Bank.
Banking apps were likewise unavailable. The airlines affected suffered short outages. American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were among them.
The disruption began at about 14:10 Sydney time. Australia Post, the postal service, was hit too - as well as Virgin Australia, the country's second-biggest carrier.
Akamai admitted it was the source of the problem, telling news agency AFP: "We are aware of the issue and actively working to restore services as soon as possible."

India boatman praised for saving baby girl floating in a box
A boatman in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state is being praised after he rescued a baby girl found floating in a wooden box in the Ganges river.
Gullu Chaudhary said he was alerted by the cries of the 21-day-old and found her wrapped in a red scarf in the box decorated with images of Hindu deities. The baby has been taken to hospital and her health is being monitored. She will be sent to a shelter home later.
Officials are investigating how the baby ended up in the river.
They have not speculated on possible motives for the abandonment, but India's gender ratio is one of the worst in the world. Women are often discriminated against socially and girls are seen as a financial burden, particularly among poor communities.
Although most unwanted female foetuses are aborted with help from illegal sex determination clinics, cases of baby girls being killed or abandoned after birth are not uncommon either.

Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi faces probe ahead of market debut
Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing is being probed by the country's market watchdog, according to media report.
The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), is said to be investigating whether Didi has been unfairly squeezing out smaller rivals. It comes as Didi readies for what could be this year's biggest US market debut.
Beijing has been increasingly reigning in China's tech giants, including Alibaba and Tencent. The SAMR is also examining whether the pricing mechanism used by the firm's core ride-hailing business is transparent enough, said Reuters quoting people familiar with the matter.
"We do not comment on unsubstantiated speculation from unnamed sources," a Didi spokesperson told the media.

Kim Jong-un admits to 'tense' food situation
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has formally acknowledged that his country is facing food shortages.
Addressing a meeting of senior leaders, Mr Kim said "the people's food situation is now getting tense". He said the agricultural sector had failed to meet its grain targets due to typhoons last year, which caused flooding.
There are reports that food prices have spiked, with NK News reporting that a kilogram of bananas costs $45. North Korea has closed its borders to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Trade with China has plummeted as a result. North Korea relies on China for food, fertiliser and fuel. North Korea is also struggling under international sanctions, imposed because of its nuclear programmes.

China admits damage to fuel rods
The Chinese government has acknowledged damage to fuel rods at a nuclear power plant in the south of the country, but said no radioactivity had leaked.
China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment said the problem was "common" with no need for concern.
The admission comes after media reported that the US government was assessing a reported leak at the facility.
The French energy firm which helps operate the plant in Guangdong province earlier reported a "performance issue".
On Monday, a spokesperson for EDF Energy said a problem with fuel rods had led to the build-up of gases, which had to be released into the atmosphere.
In its report, media said the company had warned the US government that China's nuclear regulator had raised limits on permissible levels of radiation outside the plant to avoid shutting it down.

Myanmar village burns down after clashes
A village in the centre of Myanmar has been burned down after clashes between the security forces and local guerrillas, leaving at least two people dead.
Residents told the BBC that 200 of the 240 houses in Kin Ma were razed to the ground by the military on Tuesday.
They said the incident began after forces clashed with a local militia opposed to the governing regime.
Dan Chugg, UK ambassador to Myanmar, has condemned the attack.
"Reports that the junta has burned down an entire village in Magway, killing elderly residents, demonstrate once again that the military continues to commit terrible crimes and has no regard for the people of Myanmar," a Facebook post read.
State television however blamed the fire on "terrorists".

Police also arrested the editor-in-chief and four other executives at their homes. It also froze HK$18m of assets owned by three companies linked to Apple Daily.
The paper is owned by Jimmy Lai, who is in jail on a string of charges. Apple Daily is known to be critical of the mainland Chinese leadership.
In a press briefing, police said that since 2019, Apple Daily had published more than 30 articles calling on countries to impose sanctions on Hong Kong and mainland China. It added that the assets of Apple Daily Limited, Apple Daily Printing Limited and AD internet Limited had been frozen.
Dozens of prominent activists have been arrested since the national security law was introduced last year.

The three men - Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo - are to spend three months aboard the Tianhe module some 380km (236 miles) above the Earth.
It will be China's longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years.
On Thursday, their Shenzhou-12 capsule successfully took off atop its Long March 2F rocket.
Lift-off from the Jiuquan satellite launch centre in the Gobi desert was at 09:22 Beijing time.
The launch and subsequent mission are another demonstration of China's growing confidence and capability in the space domain.

US and Russian leaders set for tense Geneva talks
US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are preparing sit down for their first, highly-anticipated summit.
The talks in Geneva, Switzerland, come at a time when both sides describe relations as being at rock bottom. Issues include china involvement, arms control, sanctions and US allegations of Russian cyber-attacks and election interference.
No major breakthroughs are expected but there are hopes of finding small areas of agreement.
The meeting will be held in a villa overlooking Lake Geneva. The choice of Geneva as the setting harks back to the Cold War summit between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985.

'Record number' of Chinese jets in Taiwan air zone
Some 28 Chinese military aircraft flew into Taiwan's air defence zone on Tuesday, said its defence ministry, the largest reported incursion so far.
Fighters and nuclear-capable bombers were among those in the so-called air defence identification zone (ADIZ). The incident comes after Nato leaders on Monday warned of the military challenge posed by China.
While democratic Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state, Beijing views the island as a breakaway province. According to Taipei, the Chinese mission included 14 J-16, six J-11 fighters, four nuclear capable H-6 bombers as well as anti-submarine, electronic warfare and early warning aircraft.
An air defence identification zone is an area outside of a country's territory and national airspace but where foreign aircraft are still identified, monitored, and controlled in the interest of national security. It is self-declared and technically remains international airspace.
The Chinese aircraft flew close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, as well as around the southern part of Taiwan itself.

Israel strikes in Gaza after fire balloons launched
Israel says it has carried out air strikes against Hamas militant targets in Gaza, in retaliation for incendiary balloons launched from the territory.
Explosions were heard in Gaza City in the early hours of Wednesday. Several balloons were sent from Gaza into Israel earlier on Tuesday causing multiple fires, according to the Israeli fire service.
It is the first major flare-up since 11 days of fighting between the two sides ended in a ceasefire on 21 May.
It followed a march by Jewish nationalists in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday, which had drawn threats from Hamas, the militant group that runs Gaza.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its fighter jets had hit military compounds operated by Hamas in Khan Younis and Gaza City.

WW2: Unearthing the brutal camps housing allied forces
Surrounded by rolling hills, Jinguashi is a picturesque former mining town on Taiwan's north-eastern coast. But beneath the lush foliage and distant ocean views lies a dark and forgotten chapter in history.
Jinguashi was the location of Kinkaseki camp, one of more than a dozen prisoner of war (POW) camps, where around 4,500 Allied soldiers were held captive during World War Two.
Taiwan was a Japanese colony at the time and the soldiers - who were captured by the Japanese military between 1942 and 1945 - were forced to work in copper mines under appalling conditions. At the camps, they would be forced to heave massive stones from the valleys for the farming of sugar cane and dig man-made lakes on a paltry diet of rice and watery vegetable soup.
Many suffered from a disease called beriberi, a vitamin deficiency that made their testicles swell, but were still forced to work. Captives slogged in temperatures of more than 40C in the summer, and in the winter, their manholes were so cold, many died.

China accuses G7 of manipulation and slander
China has accused the G7 of "political manipulation" after it criticised Beijing over a range of issues. In a joint statement at the end of a three-day summit, leaders of the G7 countries urged China to "respect human rights and fundamental freedoms".
Issues highlighted included abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority group and the crackdown on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists. China's embassy in the UK accused the G7 of "baseless accusations".
"Stop slandering China, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and stop harming China's interests," a spokesman said on Monday.
The statement by the G7 - the world's seven largest so-called advanced economies - included pledges on a number of issues, such as ending the coronavirus pandemic and steps to tackle climate change, as well as references to China.

Nato must face up to China's rise, chief says
The head of Nato has urged members to respond to China's rise ahead of a key summit designed to shore up US support for the western alliance. Nato leaders are expected to issue a statement branding China a security risk after they meet in Belgium on Monday.
Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the summit was a "pivotal moment" for the alliance. It is US President Joe Biden's first Nato meeting since taking office.
Nato is a powerful political and military alliance between 30 European and North American countries. It was established after World War Two in response to the expansion of the Soviet Union. President Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said the Nato talks would focus on collective security, including standing up to China and its rapid military rise.
"We're not entering a new Cold War and China is not our adversary, not our enemy," Mr Stoltenberg told reporters at Nato headquarters ahead of the summit. "But we need to address together, as the alliance, the challenges that the rise of China poses to our security."
Climate change, cyber-security, Russia, withdrawal of Nato forces from Afghanistan and the alliance's longest overseas deployment will also be on the agenda.

Will Joe Biden take action against China? | The Daily Update

Will Joe Biden take action against China?
A Chinese virologist, who was among the first to suggest the COVID-19 virus leaked from a Wuhan lab, said that US top coronavirus advisor Anthony Fauci's emails prove that she was right all along. A trove of Fauci's emails covering the onset of the coronavirus outbreak was released this week to media under a freedom of information request.
In one email sent last April, an executive at a health charity thanked Fauci for publicly stating that scientific evidence does not support the lab-leak theory.
Dr. Li-Meng Yan was one of the first to research the emerging coronavirus and previously revealed she was forced into hiding after accusing Beijing of a cover-up, New York Post reported.
Now, as international leaders finally focus on her Wuhan lab-leak theory, Dr. Li-Meng Yan told media that Fauci's emails contain "a lot of useful information" suggesting he always knew more than he revealed.
"They verify my work from the very beginning, even from last January, that these people know what happened, but they choose to hide for the Chinese Communist Party and for their own benefits," Dr. Li-Meng Yan insisted speaking of the treasure trove of documents released this week.
"He knows all these things," she insisted of Fauci and the apparent gain-of-function work carried out by the now-notorious Wuhan Institute of Virology in the heart of the city where the pandemic first emerged.
One email, she said, showed that "Dr. Fauci even back to 1st of February last year immediately realized that there would be gain-of-function experiment involved in the COVID-19 virus."
Over 3,000 pages of emails were obtained by the Washington Post, Buzzfeed News and CNN through Freedom of Information Act requests, date from January to June 2020.
The emails have sparked the debate whether Fauci chose to remain mum despite knowing about the onset of the virus.
The emails revealed about early days of the US Covid outbreak. Dr Fauci and his colleagues took notice, in the early days, of the theory that COVID-19 may have leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
Following this, Joe Biden said on Sunday (June 13) China had to be more transparent and allow access to their laboratories, so the West could determine whether or not the Covid-19 virus was the result of "an experiment gone awry".
"We haven't had access to the laboratories to determine whether or not, - I've not reached a conclusion because our intelligence community is not certain yet.
Biden's statement had raised a questions among the people and receiving negative feedback.

China says small groups do not rule the world
China has warned the G7 leaders that the days when a "small" group of countries decided the fate of the world were long gone. The comments, by a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in London, come as the leaders, who are meeting in England, seek a unified position over China.
They adopted a spending plan in response to a massive Chinese scheme. Analysts say US President Joe Biden is determined that Western powers need to act now to counter a resurgent China.
On Sunday, the G7 leaders are expected to issue a closing declaration promising more financial support for developing countries hit by the climate crisis, and funds for infrastructure projects in the developing world, an alternative to a Chinese programme.
A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in London was quoted by news agency as saying: "The days when global decisions were dictated by a small group of countries are long gone.
"We always believe that countries, big or small, strong or weak, poor or rich, are equals, and that world affairs should be handled through consultation by all countries", Chinese spokesperson said.

G7 adopts infrastructure plan to rival China
G7 leaders seeking to rival China have adopted a plan to support lower- and middle-income companies in building better infrastructure. President Joe Biden said he wanted the US-backed (B3W) Build Back Better World plan to be a higher-quality alternative to a similar Chinese programme.
China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has helped finance trains, roads, and ports in many countries. But it has been criticised for saddling some with debt.
In a statement at their summit in the English county of Cornwall, the G7 leaders said they would offer a "values-driven, high-standard and transparent" partnership.
It is not yet clear how the G7 plan will be financed. The US has been particularly critical of China's so-called "debt diplomacy".

Nigerian president admits failure to end violence
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that he has failed to end insecurity in the country, a promise he made when he was elected in 2015.
In a TV address, he said the fight against Islamist militants in the north had had the unintended consequence of spreading violence to other areas. Mr Buhari extended his "heartfelt condolences" to families of victims. The Boko Haram Islamist group, which began its insurgency in 2009, has stepped up attacks in recent months.
After his election in 2015, President Buhari said the group had been "technically defeated" by an army offensive. But there have been dozens of attacks in the north-east since the start of the year, and a number of military bases as well as towns have been overrun by the militants. Weapons, food and medicines have also been looted.

US officials to probe seizure of Democrats data
The US justice department will investigate attempts by officials in the Trump administration to seize the phone records of leading Democrats.
The internal probe comes after reports that the department ordered Apple to release data as part of efforts to track down who was leaking information. Two House Intelligence Committee members said they had been told records of their iPhone calls were handed over.
An official at the Biden White House criticised the actions as "appalling". Prosecutors under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued subpoenas - or orders to submit evidence - to Apple requesting data in 2017 and early 2018, according to the New York Times.
They were reportedly looking for the source of news reports about contacts between Russia and associates of Republican President Donald Trump, a matter that was then the subject of congressional investigations, including by the House Intelligence Committee.
