Denmark parliament approves giant artificial island
Plans for an artificial island to house 35,000 people and protect the port of Copenhagen from rising sea levels have been approved by Danish MPs.
The giant island, named Lynetteholm, would be connected to the mainland via a ring road, tunnels and a metro line. The approval by Denmark's parliament paves the way for the 1 sq mile (2.6 sq km) project to begin later this year.
But it faces opposition from environmentalists who have concerns over the impact of its construction.
Plans for Lynetteholm include a dam system around its perimeter, with the aim of protecting the harbour from rising sea levels and storm surges.
If construction goes ahead as planned, the majority of the foundations for the island off Denmark's capital should be in place by 2035, with an aim to fully complete the project by 2070.

Supersonic passenger flights by 2029 | The Daily Update

Supersonic passenger flights by 2029
US airline United has announced plans to buy 15 new supersonic airliners and "return supersonic speeds to aviation" in the year 2029. Supersonic passenger flights ended in 2003 when Air France and British Airways retired Concorde.
The new Overture aircraft will be produced by a Denver-based company called Boom, which has yet to flight-test a supersonic jet. United's deal is conditional on the new aircraft meeting safety standards.
Supersonic flight is when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound. At an altitude of 60,000ft (18,300m), that means flying faster than 660mph (1,060km/h).
At that speed, journey times on transatlantic routes such as London to New York can be cut in half. Boom says Overture would be able to make the trip in 3.5 hours, saving three hours off the flight.
Concorde, which entered passenger service in 1976, was even faster with a maximum speed of Mach 2.04 - about 1,350mph (2180km/h).

Facebook suspends Trump accounts for two years
Facebook Inc has suspended former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts for two years.
He was barred indefinitely from both sites in January in the wake of posts he made on the US Capitol riots, but last month Facebook's Oversight Board criticised the open-ended penalty.
Facebook said Mr Trump's actions were "a severe violation of our rules".
Mr Trump said the move was "an insult" to the millions who voted for him in last year's presidential election.
Facebook's move comes as the social media giant is also ending a policy shielding politicians from some content moderation rules.
It said that it would no longer give politicians immunity for deceptive or abusive content based on their comments being newsworthy.
Mr Trump's ban was effective from the date of the initial suspension on 7 January, Facebook's vice-president of global affairs Nick Clegg said in a post.

Belarus journalist's confession was forced - family says
The family of Belarusian journalist Roman Protasevich says he was coerced into making a confession on TV of organising anti-government protests.
Mr Protasevich, 26, was arrested in Minsk last month after his flight to Lithuania was diverted.
In a tearful appearance on state TV, he praised President Alexander Lukashenko and admitted attempting to topple him.
Marks were visible on his wrists. Human rights and opposition campaigners say he was tortured.
Mr Protasevich was editor of the opposition Nexta channel on the Telegram messaging app until last year.
He was put on a list of "individuals involved in terrorist activity" by the government in Belarus.
Mass protests erupted across Belarus after Mr Lukashenko claimed victory in a 9 August presidential election widely condemned as rigged, which was followed by a crackdown.
The protests have been curbed and opposition leaders have been sent to prison or into exile.

White House defends Dr Fauci over lab leak emails
The White House has defended the president's top coronavirus adviser, Dr Anthony Fauci, amid scrutiny of his recently released work emails.
Dr Fauci has been the face of the nation's Covid-19 response, drawing both praise and criticism.
And press secretary Jen Psaki said Dr Fauci had been an "undeniable asset".
But emails have raised questions on whether he backed Chinese denials of the theory that Covid-19 leaked from a lab in Wuhan.
A trove of Dr Fauci's emails covering the onset of the coronavirus outbreak were released this week to media under a freedom of information request.

Tiananmen: Hong Kong vigil organiser arrested on 32nd anniversary
Pro-democracy activist Chow Hang Tung has been arrested by Hong Kong police on the 32nd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Ms Chow is vice chairwoman of the Hong Kong Alliance which organises annual vigils for victims of Beijing's deadly crackdown on democracy protesters.
She has been arrested for promoting unauthorised assembly.
It comes as Hong Kong has banned the vigil for the second year running, citing coronavirus restrictions.
Hong Kong and Macau are the only places in Chinese territory where people can commemorate the deadly 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.
But this year, authorities in Macau also banned the vigil for the second year in a row, saying it would violate local criminal laws.

Biden expands US ban on Chinese firms
US President Joe Biden is set to ban Americans from investing in dozens of Chinese tech and defence firms with alleged military ties.
The new executive order will come into effect on 2 August, hitting 59 firms including communications giant Huawei. The list of firms will be updated on a rolling basis.
The move expands an order previously issued by ex-President Donald Trump.
Even before the official announcement, China suggested it would retaliate.
Under the new order, US investors will be banned from buying or selling publicly-traded securities for other companies including the China General Nuclear Power Corporation, China Mobile Limited and Costar Group.
It expands the previous list from 31 firms to include surveillance companies and is aimed at ensuring "US persons are not financing the military industrial complex of the People's Republic of China," one White House official said.

France suspends military ties with Mali
France is halting joint military operations with Mali over last week's coup in the West African country.
It said the suspension would continue until it received guarantees about a return to civilian rule in Mali.
French forces have been supporting troops from Mali, Chad, Mauritania, Niger, and Burkina Faso to fight militants in the Sahel region.
On 25 May Mali's military strongman, Col Assimi Goïta, ousted the country's civilian president and prime minister.
This week the West African grouping Ecowas and the African Union (AU) suspended Mali from their bodies.
On Thursday France's armed forces ministry said that both Ecowas and the AU had set "the framework for the political transition in Mali".

Canada is mourning the deaths of 215 children
The preliminary discovery last week of the remains of 215 Indigenous children - students of Canada's largest residential school - has prompted nationwide outrage and calls for further searches of unmarked graves.
These government-run boarding schools were part of policy to attempt to assimilate Indigenous children and destroy Indigenous cultures and languages.
The remains had been confirmed days before with the help of ground-penetrating radar technology, Chief Casimir said, following preliminary work on identifying the burial sites in the early 2000s.
The full report into the remains found is due in mid-June, and the preliminary findings may be revised. Indigenous leaders and advocates have said they expect the 215 figure to rise.

Tokyo 2020: Olympics '100%' going ahead
Tokyo president Seiko Hashimoto is "100%" certain the Olympics will go ahead, but warned the Games "must be prepared" to proceed without spectators in the event of a coronavirus outbreak.
There are 50 days until the delayed Tokyo Games begin on 23 July. Japan is dealing with a fourth wave of coronavirus cases, with 10 areas of the country under a state of emergency.
Hashimoto told the media: "I believe that the possibility of these Games going on is 100% that we will do this."
A new wave of infections began in April in Japan, where some areas face restrictions until 20 June.
Hashimoto said it was a "very painful decision" to have no overseas spectators present, but one necessary to ensure "a safe and secure Games".

More than 800 people have been killed in Myanmar
The violent reaction of the military in Myanmar to those opposing its coup has shocked the world.
More than 800 people have been killed, most of them unarmed protesters gunned down by police and soldiers using battlefield weapons against them. Some have died in custody, or been brutally beaten.
Much of this violence has been captured on smartphone cameras, offering powerful evidence to support international prosecutions for crimes against humanity.

US Capitol riots Updates
A Florida man has become only the second person so far to enter a guilty plea for taking part in the storming of the US Capitol building.
Paul Hodgkins, 38, entered the Senate chamber wearing a Trump T-shirt and carrying a "Trump 2020" flag.
The crane operator admitted obstructing an official proceeding of Congress.
Hodgkins, of Tampa, is one of at least 450 people charged in the riot. Prosecutors meanwhile dropped charges against another defendant.
A group of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on 6 January, temporarily suspending lawmakers' certification of Joe Biden as the winner of last November's presidential election.
Hodgkins had been facing five charges, including disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, but his lawyers managed to negotiate it down to one charge.

Massive sinkhole threatens to swallow Mexican house
A massive sinkhole has appeared in a paddock in central Mexico, threatening to swallow a nearby house as it widens every day.
The giant sinkhole appeared in Santa María Zacatepec, a rural area in the central Puebla state, with a loud crack on Saturday and has since grown rapidly.
It was 60 metres wide by Monday, and 80 metres wide by Tuesday.
State governor Miguel Barbosa Huerta said the family that lived closest to the expanding sinkhole – which is about 20 metres deep – had since been evacuated.
No one has been injured and the governor has warned locals to stay away.
But his warnings have largely been ignored, with crowds flocking to see the ever-growing sinkhole. As they peer over the security cordon, large chunks of earth keep breaking away from the rim.

FBI says Russia-linked group hacked meat supplier
A Russian cyber-criminal group was behind a ransomware attack that has targeted the world's largest meat processing company, the FBI has said.
The FBI said it would was working to bring the REvil group to justice for the hack on JBS.
The cyber-breach over the weekend shut some JBS operations in the US, Canada and Australia.
Revil - also known as Sodinokobi - is one of the most prolific and profitable cyber-criminal cartels in the world.
"We have attributed the JBS attack to REvil and Sodinokibi and are working diligently to bring the threat actors to justice," the FBI statement said.
"We continue to focus our efforts on imposing risk and consequences and holding the responsible cyber actors accountable."

Venus: Nasa announces two new missions!
Nasa has announced that it is sending two new missions to Venus in order to examine the planet's atmosphere and geological features.
The missions, which have each been awarded $500m (£352m) in funding, are due to launch between 2028 and 2030.
Nasa administrator Bill Nelson said the missions would offer the "chance to investigate a planet we haven't been to in more than 30 years".
The last probe to visit the planet was the Magellan orbiter in 1990.
However other vessels have made fly-bys since then.
The missions were picked following a peer-review process and were chosen based on their potential scientific value and the feasibility of their development plans.

Israel opposition parties agree to form new unity government
Israeli opposition parties have reached an agreement to form a new government that would end Benjamin Netanyahu's 12-year tenure as prime minister.
Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party, announced an eight-faction coalition had been formed.
Under a rotation arrangement, the head of the right-wing Yamina party, Naftali Bennett, would serve as prime minister first before handing over to Mr Lapid.
There still needs to be a parliamentary vote before the government is sworn in.
In a statement, Mr Lapid said he had informed President Reuven Rivlin of the agreement, adding: "I pledge that this government will work in the service of all Israeli citizens, those who voted for it and those who did not.
"It will respect its opponents and do everything in its power to unite and connect all parts of Israeli society."

Sri Lanka oil-laden ship sinks off updates
A chemical-laden cargo ship is sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka, sparking fears of an environmental disaster.
The Singapore-registered X-Press Pearl had been on fire for almost two weeks before the blaze was put out this week.
Hundreds of tonnes of oil from fuel tanks could leak into the sea if it sinks, devastating nearby marine life.
The Sri Lankan and Indian navies had worked jointly over the past days in an attempt to put out the fire and prevent the ship from breaking up and sinking.
But rough seas and monsoonal winds hampered the operation, just outside the port of Colombo.
"The ship is sinking. Salvers are trying to tow the ship to deep sea before it sinks to minimise the marine pollution but the rear area of the ship has drifted," Sri Lanka Navy spokesman Captain Indika Silva said.

Malaysia accuses China of breaching airspace
Malaysia says it is to summon China's ambassador after 16 Chinese military aircraft flew over disputed waters off its eastern state of Sarawak.
Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the transport planes on Monday after detecting "suspicious" activity over the South China Sea.
Malaysia's foreign ministry described the manoeuvre as a "serious threat to national sovereignty".
China, however, said its aircraft had abided by international law.
Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, Taiwan and Vietnam all contest China's claim to almost all of the South China Sea. The row has rumbled on for decades but tensions have increased in recent years.
Beijing continues to claim an area known as the "nine-dash line" and has backed its claim with island-building and patrols, expanding its military presence while maintaining that its intentions are peaceful.

A man in China is found to have H10N3 bird flu
A 41-year-old man in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province is the first known human to be infected with a strain of bird flu known as H10N3, China’s National Health Commission said on Tuesday — a development that experts said merited close monitoring because of an underlying continued risk of pandemic flus.
Avian viruses do not typically spread among humans, but they can pose a danger to humans if they mix with a human virus, said Raina MacIntyre, the head of the biosecurity program at the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales in Australia.
“If someone has human flu and is infected with bird flu, the two viruses can swap genetic material,” she said. “That’s why you see the concern for pandemic flu arising in countries where humans and livestock have very close contact.”
The Health Commission’s announcement said that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the Jiangsu case. Contact tracing and surveillance have not uncovered any other infections, officials said.
