DS-1: Learn to hit your target with the first shot
In this video we’ll help you learn how to hit your target reliably on the first shot.
When you’re target shooting, the idea is to slowly and carefully hit the bulls-eye.
In defensive shooting, the idea is to quickly hit anywhere inside this center-of-mass circle.
This is one of the most basic defensive firearms skills.
You’ll use it every time you shoot your gun.
When practicing this skill, you’re training your hands and eyes to work together to acquire the target.
Your objective is to build muscle memory for getting on-target quickly in all types of situations.

In this video our trainees practice shooting from a prone position. Our instructor leads them through three variations of this exercise:
-- Standard prone. Best for quick shots. This is a one-handed shot and it’s difficult to hold this position for an extended time.
-- Roll to side prone. Very good if you have enough time to get into this position. It’s very stable and comfortable for nice, steady two-handed shots.
-- Monopod “golf-grip”. Good for precise or distance shots. Using a fisted support hand as a shelf to elevate the grip and use as a monopod to hold the guns steady and shoot from any of the prone positions.

Experienced Shooters: Why Train Beginners?
ABOUT OUR MISSION
Our mission is helping beginners learn to shoot. After helping to found Armed Defense Training Association in 2010, it became clear the big demand for firearms training was with beginners. Gun sales had begun to take off and have not let up since. We wanted to help train all those new shooters. This was the genesis of New Shooter 101: the idea that any competent defensive handgun shooter can become qualified to teach beginners how to shoot.
After many years of development we decided to spin off New Shooter 101 as a separate entity.
—One of our goals is to make our curriculum available without cost to a wide audience.
—Another is to provide training in classroom presentation skills via our Mentor Academy.
—A third goal is to actively support the Second Amendment by providing educational resources for helping beginners learn to shoot.
Why are we doing this? We believe we have a duty as firearms instructors to help preserve our Constitutional rights. This is our small contribution to that effort.
As Patriots, we think that a well-trained populace will align with our Founders’ belief that a citizen militia is necessary to defend against both outside attacks AND government tyranny. Our country's experienced shooters are the ones who can make this happen.

You will see in the video that they are in a rotational sequence. This means each one has been striking for perhaps a couple of minutes before moving downrange to shoot.
