Everyone is measuring airflow WRONG - Here's why | Banks Entry
Level In this episode of Entry Level, Banks' Special Projects Lead Erik Reider explains the function of a flowbench and its uses. This leads to the problem of evaluating air by volume instead of mass, and the inaccuracy of ratiometric measurements. Finally, he shows how to hot-rod a flowbench to get accurate and relevant readings that correlate with readings from parts tested on an engine.

Flawed for 50 years. How we fixed the flowbench. | Banks Entry Level
This tool measures the amount of air that flows through engine components. Or, does it? The flowbench has been an automotive industry standard for over 50 years. While engines and our understanding of airflow have evolved, the flowbench remains relatively unchanged. Measuring airflow by CFM (cubic feet per minute) alone was good enough for most people in the 1960s. But with today's turbos, superchargers and MAF (mass airflow) sensors, the flowbench is in need of an update.
In this episode of Entry Level, Banks' Special Projects Lead Erik Reider explains the function of a flowbench and its uses. This leads to the problem of evaluating air by volume instead of mass, and the inaccuracy of ratiometric measurements. Finally, he shows how to hot-rod a flowbench to get accurate and relevant readings that correlate with readings from parts tested on an engine.
All sensor data on our modified flowbench is recorded at 20 samples per second using a Banks iDash DataMonster.

RAM-killing grid heater bolt failure up close.
RAM 6.7L grid heater bolt failure is real. It's killed an untold number of Cummins engines. Over time, a bolt in the 2007-current stock RAM 6.7L Cummins grid heater deteriorates, falls into the intake runner, and thanks to gravity, makes its way into cylinder #6. In many cases, it results in severe piston, cylinder wall, valve and head damage, or worse... total engine failure. Many mechanics either aren't aware of the problem or have not properly diagnosed it. "This is one of the most misdiagnosed Cummins engine issues," says Protech Diesel Center's Brad Hunt. "All too often, mechanics simply replace the engine. Therefore, the problem persists."
Thanks to Randy for allowing us to share his story.
The 50-state emissions compliant Monster-Ram intake system not only eliminates this point of failure, but it also provides a mass airflow gain of 88.3% over stock. That's throttle response you can feel and insurance your wallet will appreciate.

How to read a dyno sheet | Banks Entry Level
There's much more information on a dyno sheet than just peak horsepower. On this episode of Banks Entry Level, Erik Reider (Banks Special Projects Lead) walks you through how a dynamometer works, how to make sure the data being collected is accurate, and even how to catch someone who is faking their numbers.
We’ll start with the dynamometer itself and explore the differences between our eddy-current chassis dyno, and five engine dyno cells that we use for engine development. Next, we’ll get into how we make sure that a vehicle on a chassis dyno is seeing similar conditions to what it would on the road. This includes high velocity, high volume air, stable temperatures across all cooling components and fluids, and ambient conditions that reflect the environment in which the vehicle is used.
Erik also explains importance of sweep time, the direct-drive gear ratio, and the source of RPM data collection for the run. We also discuss steady-state testing and its importance in developing components that can stand up to anything from daily driving to a grueling military operation.
With the testing done, Erik goes on to talk about the dyno sheet itself. This includes how the data is organized, what data is the most relevant, and how two dyno operators in very different climates can compare results with the use of correction factors.
Finally, Erik helps you put this newfound knowledge to work catching cheaters who decide to inflate their power gains by hiding data or taking creative liberties with the graph curve.
Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the dyno sheet and how a dynamometer works is in this video!

RAM 6.7L grid heater bolt almost kills another engine
Chris got a check engine light for the heater solenoid in his 2016 RAM 6.7L. After replacing the solenoid, he checked his grid heater +12v lead by jiggling it. When it rocked back and forth, he knew he had a problem. Over time, the bolt can deform under normal use, elongating and deforming like a stalactite from the roof of a cave. Failure to inspect the bolt could result in it falling off into the intake manifold and rolling downhill, ultimately falling into cylinder #6.
Chris' solution to this potential failure point was to replace the factory intake elbow and grid heater assembly with a Banks Monster-Ram. The system ships with a billet aluminum high-flow heater plate and vertical coil-style heater that threads into the top of the top of the Monster-Ram.

Ram 6.7L Grid Heater Bolt Failure Jiggle Test
Here's how you test to see if the nut and bolt in your factory RAM 6.7L Cummins grid heater is loose. If the post jiggles, it indicates that the nut and bolt on the bottom are loose and should be inspected by a mechanic immediately. Over time, the bolt can deform under normal use, elongating and deforming like a stalactite from the roof of a cave. Failure to inspect the bolt could result in it falling off into the intake manifold and rolling downhill, ultimately falling into cylinder #6.
Prevention begins with the jiggle test. One solution to this potential failure point is to replace the factory intake elbow and grid heater assembly with a Banks Monster-Ram. The system ships with a billet aluminum high-flow heater plate and vertical coil-style heater that threads into the top of the top of the Monster-Ram.

How Banks got into diesel | Speed School Podcast Ep 13
Gale Banks wraps up his multi-part interview with Walt Ware, former President of Garrett AiResearch by revealing their biggest achievements. Did you know Walt was responsible for turbos in all Ford 7.3L Power Strokes? He was also responsible for creating the world's first robotic turbocharger assembly plant. The two also discuss how and why Banks transitioned from gas diesel to diesel performance in the early 80s. Banks Sidewinder Turbo Systems were available as a dealer-specified option at GMC dealers throughout the mid-80s. You could buy a GMC pickup or Suburban with a turbocharged 6.2L diesel engine a full year before RAM offered the Cummins turbo diesel! This is just one of the many stories the pair cover in this week’s fascinating episode.

How to Clean and Re-Oil Your Air Filter
One of the most commonly asked questions in our service center is, “How do I clean my air filter?” In this tutorial, we explain the differences between oiled and dry filters, as well as how to clean and re-oil them. We’ve even created a free re-oiling calculator so you know precisely how much oil to use. You'll come across people online complaining about oil filters caking up their MAF sensor located in their air intake tube. This occurs only when filters are improperly oiled. In this video, we’ll show you the right way to do it so this doesn't occur. If properly cared for, your Ram-Air filter element should last years and years.

Tuned 2021 Duramax Shaves Half Second Off 1/4 Mile Time
Hallman Chevrolet's "Truck Guy Joe" Fallon is outspoken for his love of trucks, especially diesel. The 3500HD Duramax owner delivers new vehicles to customers using his 2021 Silverado as the tow rig. A fan of racing, Joe recently hit the track to test his new Derringer and PedalMonster setup. At 14.1 seconds, he shaved almost half a second off a stock '21 Duramax! Not bad for a 12,100-pound 1-ton truck! However, Joe is quick to point out that as much fun as the Derringer is on the track, its 81 horsepower and 144 lb-ft addition really comes in handy when towing. Add the PedalMonster throttle controller and its a game-changer.

S&B Filters recently posted a video about their new RAM 1500 TRX intake system. In the video, JLT Performance, an S&B company, compares the stock intake with the S&B unit using a typical chassis dynamometer. Not long after the video was posted, fans began blowing up Gale's inbox. "You've gotta see this. They're testing with the hood open!" Having the hood closed during testing is critical in replicating real-world conditions. But in order to close the hood during testing, you must provide ample airflow or the vehicle will overheat. This is where the wheels fall off. Before the respected 80-year-old engineer had a chance to see the video, we convinced him to watch it on camera. We set up a computer in the race shop and clicked play as the cameras rolled.
Note: Banks has no plans to produce a TRX intake system.
