A clean diesel tune increases power without increasing emissions and therefore does not over-tax the emissions systems including the diesel particulate filter (DPF). As manufacturers improve modern turbo diesels, the engines produce less in-cylinder emissions which means the after-treatment systems like the DPF, the DOC, and the SCR can be made less restrictive. Understanding how the DPF and regens work is a major part of tuning diesel engines safely and keeping the emissions system functioning properly. Even Gale was shocked by the Big Ass Filter and how little it restricted airflow. With less restriction, more air can make it to your intake manifold, and subsequently, your cylinders. With more air available, a turbo diesel engine like the Duramax L5P can reduce turbine shaft speed, and make the same horsepower as stock with less wear on the turbo and less back pressure in the exhaust. Or, if you want to go a little bit quicker, that extra air can be used to make more power. However you want to use it, getting the maximum amount of air into your cylinder, is nothing but a good thing! Over time, a bolt in the 2007-current stock RAM 6.7L Cummins grid heater deteriorates, falls into the intake runner, and thanks to gravity, makes its way into cylinder #6. In many cases, it results in severe piston, cylinder wall, valve and head damage, or worse... total engine failure. Many mechanics either aren't aware of the problem or have not properly diagnosed it. "This is one of the most misdiagnosed Cummins engine issues," says Protech Diesel Center's Brad Hunt. "All too often, mechanics simply replace the engine. Therefore, the problem persists." Steve Garcia, a 2016 RAM 6.7L owner, noticed a check engine light. A diagnostic scan at his local RAM dealership revealed a P2609 trouble code for the air intake heater circuit. This is often the first sign of heater failure. Those who encounter this code should immediately perform the "Jiggle Test" shown in this video. If the +12V post wiggles, do not drive the truck. Have the RAM towed to your local diesel mechanic for inspection. #tbt 1989 - In this vintage KTLA News segment of The Car Guys, Gale showed off his latest concept beast, the “Banks 502”. The 502 was a C1500 SS454 truck with a 1,300 hp twin-turbo 502 big block sporting a massive rear wing meant for speeds over 200 mph. The truck roared loud enough to set off all of the car alarms on the backlot as it comes into view. This truck was part of a larger racing effort with GM in the late ’80s and early ’90s. History buffs will recall that Banks set World Records for GMC with our Project Syclone in 1989 and 1990. In the early days, Gale had different ideas regarding what he wanted to build. He planned a regular-cab short-bed truck with all-wheel drive, armed with one of his massive racing engines tuned for the rigors of Bonneville. GM execs weighed in, Chevy said that if anyone was going to do something in a big truck it was going to be them, and that’s how we got the 454 SS truck. GMC stipulated that Bonneville should be raced with the S-15 Jimmy mini-truck, which neither had all-wheel drive nor turbos. They told him it’d have to be naturally aspirated because “We don’t sell turbocharged trucks." One only wonders what this 502 concept truck would have done at the Salt Flats, and just how many street-legal versions would have been picking fights with hot rods, even today. Eventually, GMC actually DID end up selling a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive truck called the Syclone. That truck was followed up with the turbo, all-wheel drive Typhoon.
