Inside a Variable Geometry Turbo
Gale Banks opens up the variable geometry turbo from a Duramax L5P to show the inner workings of this ingenious technology. VGTs use an electronic actuator connected to internal vanes to change the turbine shaft speed while maintaining the same turbine drive pressure. The result is that a VGT can act like a small turbo to quickly spool up and minimize turbo lag, then open up the vanes to reduce backpressure and increase air density more efficiently.

RAM 6.7L Grid Heater Bolt Failure Explained
Over time, a bolt in the 2007-current RAM 6.7L Cummins stock grid heater deteriorates, falls into the intake runner, and thanks to gravity, makes its way into cylinder #6. In many cases, this results in severe piston, valve, and head damage or total engine failure.
Learn why the problem occurs and how to prevent it.

Gale Banks receives the SAE's Peter Bryant Challenger Award
The Society of Automotive Engineers Southern California section chose to honor Gale Banks with the Peter Bryant Challenger Award. It’s an amazing honor to share this award with the likes of Dan Gurney, Phil Remington, and Ed Iskenderian. The event, held at the Lions Automobilia Foundation & Museum in Long Beach, CA, also presented an opportunity to talk to students in the Society of Automotive Engineers about the future of automotive engineering and Banks Power.

Getting precise pressure readings using water
To test airflow in our products and accurately compare them to the competition we need a scale of measurement that shows subtle differences. Our flowbench measures pressure from in inches of water, and to explain how that works, Special Projects Lead Erik Reider has set up a water column manometer for demonstration.

Accidentally solved a huge RAM 6.7 issue
We built the Banks Monster-Ram for the 6.7L Cummins to reduce restrictions in the intake system, unload the compressor, and improve turbo response. It turns out that we also solved the problem of grid heater bolt failure by replacing the factory grid heater. With each Monster-Ram comes an Banks high-flow billet intake plate and a coil heater that threads vertically into the Monster-Ram casting.
The 50-state emissions-compliant Monster-Ram intake system not only eliminates this point of failure, but it also provides a mass airflow gain of 88.3% over stock. That's throttle response you can feel and insurance your wallet will appreciate.

Upgrading to head studs might be a bad idea
We've pushed the Duramax L5P and many other engines over 1000 hp on stock internals and stock head bolts. Gale Banks explains how the stock head bolts and head gasket work together to reduce the stresses in the block and the head compared to an aftermarket head stud system. Many engine builders upgrade to head studs to protect the engine from head gasket failure, but without the cushioning the stock head bolts provide, there's a greater risk of damaging the actual block. On your next engine build, are you using head studs or head bolts?

How a boost gauge can be fooled
If you've always assumed that more boost means more power, Gale has some bad news for you. The boost gauge is not an accurate representation of the potential horsepower, because pressure can increase with heat regardless of whether there is more air present or not. For the most accurate, and reliable measure of horsepower potential, you need to be reading air density.
The Banks iDash can display and log air density as well as dozens of other patented parameters. https://bnks.pw/idash

How a Roots supercharger works
What's the right way to supercharge our Duramax diesel-powered monster truck engine? In this clip from our "Building a Monster Truck Engine" series, Gale details the internal workings of a few Roots-type superchargers. After extensive testing, we eventually swapped the Roots type blower for a 5-liter Whipple screw-type supercharger to pair with two 68/70 Precision turbos.

Competitor tries to fake a big air intake
Everyone wants an air intake that will flow more air into the engine to increase horsepower or improve fuel economy. One of our competitors boasted a huge intake tube however, the inside of the tube told a different story. We knew we had to respond. The Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor in the intake tube sends the engine a mass airflow reading that only works when the sensor is in a tube that has a specific cross-sectional area. In other words, if you install a large diameter tube without addressing the MAF sensor, the readings will be so far out of spec that it will result in a check engine light. Our competitor's solution was to eliminate all of the airflow gains they would have achieved from their big tube. They used an insert that restricts the mass airflow to stock performance in order to avoid a check engine light.
For our Ram-Air intake system, we wanted a huge free-flowing tube and no check engine lights. How did we manage it? Our patented electronic Air Mass Control Module recalibrates the stock sensor's MAF readings to accurately report the mass flow to the truck's ECM. This allowed to increase the tube size without limits.
The Air Mass Control Module is available with our 2020-2023 Duramax L5P Ram-Air Intake System https://bnks.pw/3sHSbpK

RAM 6.7L grid heater failure happens in warm climates too.
Many RAM 6.7L owners are under the assumption that only trucks in cold climates are susceptible to grid heater bolt failure. Yes, trucks in cold climates do see more use of the grid heater, but frequent grid heater use is not the main culprit. As an example, Chris lives in a beach community thirty miles north of Los Angeles where it rarely drops below 50°F. His grid heater sees very little activity if any. So, why did his grid heater fail, nearly killing his engine? The heater solenoid failed. His grid heater was energized whenever the truck was running. Had he not had a check engine light for a P2609 code, his engine may have swallowed the bolt leading to catastrophic damage.
Learn more about P2609 and P0542 diagnostic trouble codes and how to prevent RAm grid heater failure.

CFM =/= airflow
An engine pumps cubic feet of air per minute (CFM), but what makes horsepower is the air mass within that volume. The more you compress air, the higher its density, assuming you've cooled the air properly. Dense air packs more oxygen in the same given volume. In other words, air density is king. The Banks Monster-Ram provides an 88.3% increase in mass airflow over stock, meaning more air density makes it into the cylinder even though the engine is still pumping the same CFM.

This fuel line neuters the Cummins air intake system
The stock fuel delivery arrangement on the RAM Cummins 6.7 engine causes a massive restriction on the intake elbow feeding air to the manifold. Even so-called "performance" intake elbows from other companies seem to sacrifice airflow for the sake of not touching the stock fuel line. The Banks Monster-Ram not only provides an 88.3% increase in mass airflow over stock, but it also includes a new #1 fuel line to allow for unobstructed airflow.

When Does an L5P Turbo give up?
Gale Banks talks about what the limitations are on the stock Duramax L5P Turbocharger and how so many tuners don't know when they've reached that limit because they lack proper instrumentation. The Banks iDash is the easiest way to keep an eye on any parameter you may want, even if you're killing a Duramax in on an engine dyno.

No More Hot Air Intakes!
Open element intakes are not cold air intakes, they are hot air intakes! Inducting under-hood air means the air has expanded from heat and is therefore less dense. To get the most oxygen possible into your cylinder, you need an intake that inducts cool dry air.
