Babyface: Nancy Carroll
Who was the "star of the talkies", the "child of Manhattan" with links to the underworld of Times Square? This was Nancy Carroll (1903-1965) who starred in over forty films, many of which have not been remastered and released by Paramount & Universal. Why is that? Could there be an ongoing grudge against Carroll by Paramount due to her liaison with Joe Kennedy Senior in 1931? Find out in this video.

The Last Mount Vernon Heir
Learn about John Augustine Washington III "Gus" (1821-1861), the private heir of Mount Vernon. Selling timber, potatoes and herring from his Mount Vernon estate, Gus found it hard to manage the plantation and eventually decided to embrace visiting tourists. A great-great nephew of General George Washington (1732-1799), Gus was friends and relatives with General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870). Serving as Lee's aide-de-camp in 1861, Gus was gunned down in a reconnaissance mission and his death subsequently paraded as a Yankee victory. Oddly, it seems mentions to his Confederate service have been scrubbed from Mount Vernon.

George Brent | Easter Rising in Hollywood
Who was the suave hero to Bette Davis' heroine in eleven films? This was Irish-born George Brent (1899-1979) who would marry five women and propose marriage to Davis in 1940 (she refused). Acting as a courier for the IRA or a doppelganger for Michael Collins (1890-1922) depending on who you asked, Brent was relied upon by Warner Brothers to tame their more high-spirited leading ladies. Happy Easter!

Cultural Appropriation by Beyoncé
In Beyoncé's March 2024 album Act II: Cowboy Carter leans into country music. But this is strange for a woman who actively campaigned against American interests, American public safety and the American flag, in Black is King (2016) and Black Parade (2020). The lucrative country music scene is what Beyoncé seems to be after. Beyoncé culturally appropriated Indian culture back in 2016 with a Coldplay music video, and so this seems to be part of a pattern.

Madams of Melbourne
The Little Lon district of Melbourne was host to many madams, brothels and bordellos during the 1890s. Madame Brussels (1851-1908) provided three of the longest lasting brothels near Melbourne's parliamentary buildings. She is commemorated in street names and the Madame Brussels Bar. Her rival, Annie Wilson, and smaller owners such as Mary Williams and Alicia Bond have come to light due to archaecological digs of latrines in Melbourne.

Jane Austen's Mysteries
Time and again, we see a "W" villainous character rise in Jane Austen's novels: from George Wickham in Pride and Prejudice (1813) to John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility (1811). But come to Austen's last finished novel, Persuasion (1816) and Captain Frederick Wentworth is a very sympathetic character. Is it a coincidence that Wentworth sounds a lot like Wordsworth, as in John Wordsworth, the tragic philosopher sailor lost at sea in 1805? Learn more about the mysteries of Jane Austen's W in this video.

Ghosts of Lyndhurst
Lyndhurst (1887-1944) was the Pittsburgh mansion of the Gilded Age Thaw family. The Thaw family rose to prominence through its development of steamships by its patriarch, William Thaw Sr (1818-1889). After Thaw's death, one of his ten children, Harry K. Thaw (1871-1947) shot Gilded Age architect Stanford White (1853-1906) to death. Thaw's mother, Mrs. William Thaw (1843-1929) was a devout Presbyterian and Thaw was haunted by images of demons in Madison Square Garden. But years earlier, in 1902, the Thaws were kept awake by a mysterious woman who died in their home. Lyndhurst became unused and was demolished in 1944, but the ghost remains.

Anna Held: The First Ziegfeld Girl
Who was the first Ziegfeld girl? Arguably it was Anna Held (1872-1918), Florence Ziegfeld's common-law wife he lived with in a 13-room suite in Manhattan's Ansonia Hotel. Bringing risqué jokes, flesh and women from around America on stage, Held was Ziegfeld's partner in crime for 14 years, from 1896 to 1910. Leaving a daughter, Lianne Carrera (1895-1988) from her first marriage to a Paraguayan playboy, Held toured the French trenches during World War I and supposedly had a gown made of 3000 diamonds.

Where is Princess Kate?
Princess Kate of Wales (1982- ) has been out of the public eye since December 2023 for an "abdominal surgery" that is now over. After leaving the London Clinic, Princess Kate Middleton has spent time at Amner Hall with her family and her Windsor home. As her husband, Prince William, juggles his wife's illness, his father's cancer diagnosis and public duties, questions are being raised on what surgery Princess Kate got? Is it related to her hypnotherapy methods of her pregnancy? Her childhood scar on her left temple? Is it related to the death of financier Thomas Kingson (1979-2024), ex boyfriend of her sister Pippa?
