Time and again, we see a "W" villainous character rise in Jane Austen's novels: from George Wickham in Pride and Prejudice (1813) to John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility (1811). But come to Austen's last finished novel, Persuasion (1816) and Captain Frederick Wentworth is a very sympathetic character. Is it a coincidence that Wentworth sounds a lot like Wordsworth, as in John Wordsworth, the tragic philosopher sailor lost at sea in 1805?
