Lyndhurst (1887-1944) was the Pittsburgh mansion of the Gilded Age Thaw family. The Thaw family rose to prominence through its development of steamships by its patriarch, William Thaw Sr (1818-1889). After Thaw's death, one of his ten children, Harry K. Thaw (1871-1947) shot Gilded Age architect Stanford White (1853-1906) to death. Thaw's mother, Mrs. William Thaw (1843-1929) was a devout Presbyterian and Thaw was haunted by images of demons in Madison Square Garden. But years earlier, in 1902, the Thaws were kept awake by a mysterious woman who died in their home. Lyndhurst became unused and was demolished in 1944, but the ghost remains.
