Only the head will be covered in plaster cloth, and that's just because it's faster and I'm lazy. Should we be calling it a mixed media dragon? The plaster cloth shell was formed over a WED clay form, then a small amount of texture and detailing was added using paper mache and air dry clay. It only took a few days, so it would make a great school project. Someone mentioned in a comment that a unicorn would be nice. I have a unicorn in my mask book. You can use the techniques in this video to make any kind of face - it doesn't have to be a silly Wild Man - but this one was fun. This video is long because it shows you the entire process of sculpting a face, from making the initial "mask form" armature, to sculpting the details with the Silky-Smooth Air Dry Clay, to finishing him with a light brown glaze. You don't need to use the WED clay for the initial form - any kind of clay will work. Use whatever kind you have on hand. http://UltimatePaperMache.com This chicken clock took less than three hours of hands-on time to make. The recipe for the fast-setting paper mache paste: Mix together - 1/4 cup (60 ml) white glue (Elmer's Glue All or any PVA glue) 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cold water 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vinegar, any kind Then mix in - 1/4 cup (60 ml) plaster of Paris These are all volume measurements. I have not weighed the ingredients, but the exact measurements aren't terribly important anyway. If you come close, the paste will still work. It sets up fast so you can remove the paper mache from the mold more quickly than you can with normal paper mache paste. However, it still takes time to dry. (The drying time wasn't included in the three-hour limit for the challenge, of course). http://UltimatePaperMache.com The lion head is finished. The first one had a lot of air bubbles in the surface, so I made a second one with a thinner mix of Quikwall. I ordered some products that should help when I make my next concrete sculpture, directly over an armature. I'll be making the armatures just like the ones I make for paper mache, but with a plywood pattern instead of cardboard. Stay tuned! Also, I was wondering if anyone would be interested if I put up a Kickstarter campaign to buy a better camera for these videos - one with an external mic so the noise problem would go away.
