How to Sketch and Draw Textures - Sketching Tutorial #urbansketch
Here is a quick tip on sketching and drawing textures.
I’m using my LAMY safari ink fountain pen, and want to show you my best tip for quick and interesting textures in your art.
Sketching in 10 Minutes Goes Wrong! But I'm still Happy! Urban Sketch Tutorial

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this ten minute sketching challenge I'll use my watercolours and ink pens to try and quickly capture this lovely snowy tram scene!
If you're interested in learning more about sketching snowy scenes, then check out my skillshare (link towards the end of the description) where I have produced a full length in depth tutorial looking at EXACTLY that!
In this ten minute sketch, I learn that it can't always go to plan. This time, for example, ten minutes was enough to capture a lovely simple sketch - but not quite what I had in my mind's eye! And not quite enough to get the snow feeling real and 3D.
The big learning point from this sketch is to know and accept your limits, and be happy with them.
It can be tempting to rush a sketch, get frustrated when our ink and watercolours aren't producing us the perfect painting as quick as we hoped. BUT understanding that sometimes we just need to spend a little time can let us relaxed and move on with our sketch, eventually producing something that we're really proud of.
Hopefully in this sketch you can learn from my mistakes. And have a good bit of fun along the way too.
I'll take you step by step through everything I'm doing, and show you the simple and fun processes I use to capture snow, and awkward aspects like perspective and foreshortening!

Watercolour Winter Scene - Urban Sketch Snowy Landscapes
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this video I will talk you through the key things that I think about when sketching and painting snowy scenes in watercolour and ink.
Snow and winter scenes are not easy to paint and draw, you do have to do a little thinking and planning. The problem is, when the white paper is gone - it's gone! It's not easy to get it back.
Therefore, when we are sketching and painting, especially loose and quick urban sketches, we need to be thinking from the beginning about our process and where we are going to leave white paper.
Understanding, from there, how to develop contrasts, shadows and shape from this scene, and how to build shapes up from a white page.
We'll also look at how you can actually add a bit of white to the page, using a couple of techniques, as well as the importance of some really bold lines for this style.

Rules of Composition Made Easy - Urban Sketching Tutorial
The rules of composition are sometimes confusion, and it's a pretty boring thing to read about if we're honest. But learning these simple rules of composition in an easy and flexible way can make the world of difference for your sketching.

In this video I'll show you my basic process for setting out an urban sketch composition, enabling us to then get to drawing architecture with a loose and interesting one line sketch, a drawing that captures the essence of the scene, but is also simple and easy to complete.
We will use the rule of thirds and the fibonacci spiral to look at features of our reference photo, and find what composition works the best for our chosen subject and sketch.
And it's really not as hard as it looks, or that boring. In fact, I think it's quite fun to try out these little composition sketches and work towards our perfect focal point and sketch!

SKETCHING SHADOWS for Beginners - 3 Simple Techniques for Quick Effective Sketches

Shadows are the key to defining shape and volume of objects - but can also be after thoughts in our sketching process as we get caught up in the fun of the detail and energy of the scene.
In this easy sketching video I'll walk you through my three most commonly used techniques for creating shadows in my sketches and urban sketching.
These techniques aren't rocket science, by any means, but sometimes I find laying out these concepts clearly can show just how simple they are and get you thinking, as you're sketching, in more detail about which process you would most like to use.
Within each hint/tip for the techniques, I'll talk you through several variations you can use, for example different methods for hatching, different types of pen or watercolour you might use.
By the end I hope you'll have some more confidence to go out, grab those shadows in your drawings, sketches and urban sketches, and take them to the next level!

Sketching snow can be really challenging, but it absolutely doesn't have to be.
In fact, shouldn't it be really easy because snow it white - and in watercolours that means NOT painting!
So how on earth can we sketch lovely snow-filled scenes, and make them feel real, alive and stress free to sketch?
Well, in this video I hope to show you exactly how to paint snow, specifically in this instance a lovely snowy village scene straight out of the Cotswolds.
We will talk through the use of shadows, which is absolutely key when sketching snow, both on the ground and around our objects.
We'll also look at how to get those lovely snow filled trees in the background and looking at lovely colours to use for a gentle snowy winter sky.

Adding Bold Colours and Shadows to Our Sketch, Is it worth it? - Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, Part 2

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
So this is part two of my Les Eclaireurs lighthouse sketch, using fun line and wash and urban sketching techniques to create a more 'finished', vibrant and detailed image!
The whole painting took me around 3 hours, a long long time for me!
Do you think it was worth it?
I certainly do, really enjoyed this painting. Lighthouses and lighthouse sketching both en plein air and at home are, I think, my long time favourite sketches.
The process for this painting includes laying of beautiful colours, and also careful use of shadows to create a sense of depth and a 3D feeling in the rocks you see in the foreground. The bold colours paired with tonal work are what, I think, makes lighthouse sketching so fun and vivid.
The opportunity too, for lighthouse sketches, to paint a gorgeous watercolour sky, is too good to miss!
I've started bringing together my favourite lighthouses and favourite sketches and popped them up as a card collection on my website - some of the originals (like this one) too are available.
You can find them on -- https://www.urbansketch.co.uk/store/set-of-5-lighthouse-cards
Anyway, enough self-promotion, happy sketching!!
I used a series of references from unsplash for this one: https://unsplash.com/s/photos/les-eclaireurs-lighthouse

In this speed sketching demonstration I'll talk you through, step by step, my exact process for completing detailed and interesting sketches on a grander scale than I usually share.
LOOK OUT FOR PART 2 COMING UP TOMORROW!
This is part one, and as ever this means we are tackling the line work - using our pen and ink to get to grips with our scene and pull out those important details and get our composition right.
From brickwork to birds, sea to sky and everything in between in this style of sketching every aspect of the sketch has a little thought put into it.
That doesn't mean, just because it takes a little longer, that it's harder and more challenging - no it's still all the same simple processes that I chat on about constantly on my channel! And I'm sure you can do the same, or better!!
This lighthouse is sketched out on an A3 sheet of paper using lots of fine ink lines. We'll discuss the use of details, hatching, and negative space in coming up with a fun and lively sketch and composition.
This scene is also part of my lighthouse collection - available on my website if you'd like as a set of cards, or also as individual original paintings! Link here --- https://www.urbansketch.co.uk/store/set-of-5-lighthouse-cards

Fortnum and Mason, one of my favourite places to sketch. The building is very interesting, and it feels like a proper Christmassy place to be - in truth I almost never go there, but occasionally for Christmas it’s nice to go and get a couple of tins of very expensive biscuits as a present for someone (or me…).
This sketch is coming up in the next couple of weeks as a full length tutorial, I’ll demonstrate all the principles of sketching in this style and of course talk you through my urban sketching processes and tips.
This loose line work, in a semi-abstract style, still resembles the original image making it recognisable but letting us break some rules and have fun with our ink and wash.

It can be tempting to always feel we MUST fill the whole page with colour. Other times we manage to leave a little white space, but feel that of course, of point of interest MUST have colour.
Well, I'm going to suggest that this isn't true, on both counts!
This is a sketch of Heceta Head lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse in Greece. One of my lighthouse collection (https://www.urbansketch.co.uk/store/set-of-5-lighthouse-cards) - check it out on my website if you'd like :)
And how did I paint the lighthouse, well, I didn't really.
Yes there is a red roof, and a couple of very light shadows - but really - the whole thing is pretty much just white paper.
And why does this work?
Simple, it because the contrast, tone and colours around the lighthouse push it forward and make it pop - and that's all we really need to achieve to make our focal point interesting, have it pop and shine!
This is a fully narrated tutorial of a sketch that took me a couple of hours, but with the magic of technology I can show you and talk you through the whole process in just 15 minutes. I'll discuss my reasons for making certain decisions, and talk you through all the colours I use, and why I manipulate/change the image quite a bit from the reference photo I'm using.
The colours are:
Sky - pthalo blue and cobal blue
Greenery - quin gold, pthalo blue
Shadows - paynes grey
Rocks - lunar earth, quin gold
Roofs - scarlet lake
