10 Minute Simple Urban Sketch - Watercolour First then Pen
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Here is another 10 minute Urban Sketch, done in a loose and simple style. We're experimenting a little bit here as well, applying our colours first, with a little help from some pencil lines, before adding our ink pen lines on top to tie things all together.
This gives a lovely loose and expressive look to our sketch, as we bend our lines to fit our scene!
Well, like I often do I tried really hard to do it in 10 minutes, but it ended up a couple of minutes longer :)
This time I have an excuse - we are tackling a fun little alley scene from St Neots, the photo reference is available below. I started with pencil, then added colour before quickly drying and adding some brown watercolour ink.
The effect is a moody shadow and light filled sketch which captures, for me, what I hoped to in a very short time!
The aim of a 10 minute challenge is to loosen up, experiment and have a bit of fun - and that's what I did today.
I hope you guys enjoy!

Fountain Pen Sketching - 8 DIFFERENT USES for ink and fountain drawing

Experimenting in our sketching isn't just about using lots of different media, or trying to be clever and combine ink, colour, pens and everything else.
No, experimenting can also be getting to know your trusting single pen really really well. And in this, you can find so many new and fun ways to get sketching and drawing with your fountain pen.
I love my LAMY safari fountain pens - I have a few in my collection, and the reason is they have different uses. Or so I claim. Certainly, they have different inks and nibs, and I find that variety fun.
But perhaps I'm just being greedy, in reality we can do so much to draw and sketch with just one pen, producing enormous variety and lovely textures.
So here you go, my 8 different uses for JUST ONE pen!!

Here is a loose and interesting urban sketch tutorial, using simple techniques to create a really fun and easy urban sketch in just ten minutes!
This simple urban sketch is great for beginners, but also has it's own unique challenges in it's protrayal. And that is where being simple, approaching our sketch in a relaxed fashion and producing a lovely easy sketch comes to our rescue!
The added pressure of a 'ten minute challenge' makes us simplify the sketch, keeps us grounded and makes the sketching process quick and easy too.
The sketch is an instagram challenge - set by Katiesbrushandnib and jal.art377 - you can find their post and reference here -- https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmbsQ5r2KO/

How and Why to Use a LAMY Ink Fountain Pen Converter / LAMY Safari and Al Star

How to use an ink converter or fountain pen converter is an excellent question! LAMY produces LAMY Safari and LAMY Al Star pens, which are super popular LAMY fountain pens - but they also produce the z27 and z28 converters - which allow us to use bottled ink.
Ink converters, also known as fountain pen converters, allow us to use almost any ink in our fountain pen - no just the branded ink cartridges that LAMY provide for us!
That's right, it's really easy to use any other ink.
This is not just cheaper, it's also better for the environment.
There is, of course, a catch - you must make sure the ink you want to use is fountain pen safe - we'll discuss this and give a common example of an ink to avoid in this video.

You NEED to know your Hot and Cold Pressed Watercolour Paper - What's the difference? Which is best?

Hot pressed vs Cold pressed paper, a classic match up and a confusing or difficult choice to make. Especially if you’re not quite sure what the effect you’re after is!
I have changed over the years, I used to be a lover of hot pressed paper, but increasingly I love my cold pressed and textured papers. But what is the reason for this??
Well, in this video I’ll show you the difference between the two – I can’t say which is better, that is for you and your style to decide. But I will show you the different effects.
We’ll look at how they interact with pen lines, and normal watercolour washes.
What about the textures and more interesting/wacky wet on wet sketching – well of course we’ll look at that too.
As I paint more loose and with more water over the years, the reason I love cold pressed paper is I value the absorbancy and the textures it gives me. Whilst illustrators and botanical artists will love the accuracy and clean colours you can achieve on hot pressed paper.
I don’t go into it in this video, but both the papers I’m using at 300gsm, and good quality ‘own brand’ rather than super expensive ‘professional quality’ papers. However, the same rules apply to hot and cold paper, no matter who is selling them to you 😉

Urban Sketching People in a Scene - Four Simple Tips
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Here is my new, updated, video on how to easily, simply and quickly draw people in your urban sketches. This time the focus is on making people a PART of your scene.
In this video I'll give you my latest, most up to date, top four tips, hints and hacks to add people to your scenes - including quick line work, perspective and sense of scale made easy, and even a splash of colour!
Urban sketches can be brought to life with peoples and figures, often capturing a simple portrait or even a busy crowd can be, if not key then certainly beneficial to busy streets or market scenes, for example.
But sketching people can also be scary or challenging.
For me, it's all about breaking down figures into something more simple. Remembering that we don't have to draw every line, feature and aspect of people to make them effective. Instead easy, simple and quick people can be added without fear, and can be super effective, perhaps even more effective in a lot of sketches!
So, without further ado, lets get to sketching our people!

In this video I'll show you my basic process for drawing architecture with a loose and interesting one line sketch, a drawing that captures the essence of the scene, but is also simple and easy to complete.
For my urban sketches, I almost always use elements of continuous line drawing in my ink sketching - why? Because it makes for such a quick way to grab my scene, and get a really interesting sketch down.
And it's really not as hard as it looks, in fact, I think it's easier than sketching in the 'normal' way!

Direct Watercolour and Ink Urban Sketching made Simple - A Line And Wash Watercolor Tutorial

In this sketch I'll show you how to combine direct watercolours with ink lines to create a vivid and fun watercolour urban sketch, using simple techniques and a loose and fun approach.
This is a line and wash watercolor, but the other way around! We will use a watercolor urban sketching process before adding the ink line work to create structure and shape!
In this sketching process, we use watercolours first in a process known as 'direct watercolour sketching'. We don't use pencil or pen to make our lines, instead, we grab shapes and outlines with our brush first.
And madder still... we'll do this 'fine' work all with a big brush.
Of course, we will be adding some ink later, and this part is key - it takes our loose and beautiful colours and gives them some structure and brings the whole image together.
My aim is to make urban sketching fun and interesting, take away the stress of perfectionism and instead enjoy exploring different techniques with a variety of loose sketches like this.
As an urban sketcher I'm at my happiest when I can pass on the joy of simple and fun sketching techniques!

Here is another in my series of EASY URBAN SKETCHING tutorials! The aim of these is to help anyone, even total beginners, to be able to break down and simplify scenes they are sketching.
Urban sketching can be easy simple and fun!
In these guides I show you how I break down scenes, and capture them in a fun and easy manner, simplifying the scene but making it pack a punch of fun, colour and character.
Today I'm using ink, with a fude pen, and my normal set of watercolours to capture this beautiful scene from Malta. (Where I was lucky enough to go on holiday a few weeks ago!).
The scene could be complicated or scary - but I'll show you every step of my process, with a real focus even on making the composition simple and effective. And how to use our line work to capture a heap of texture and character before we get to the colours.
By painting fast and loose we get lovely effects, like drips, splashes and mingling of colours - and I'll give you a few pointers (if you stick with me to the end!!) on how to achieve this too.

This is a continuous line urban sketch of a really interesting scene in Norwich, UK.
Using a loose approach we can get really fun and beautiful urban sketches, relaxing and enjoying the process.
The result is semi-abstract, but recognisable and a great way to develop your urban sketching and architecture sketching.

This is my 2022 Robin sketch! Following my pretty much yearly for the past 5 or more years sketching of robins when it gets even vaguely near Christmas!
They're just such a lovely shape, and wonderful colours, and great fun to sketch and draw. And birds can be really easy to sketch as well.
Every year I love sketching and painting robins, it just feels festive at this time of year. You'll find on my instagram and youtube, every December, another variation on a Robin!
So, I thought, why not do it again and show you how easy and fun it can be.
Using this little chap I'll talk to you a lot about structure and planes (again!) and how we can use them to sketch anything and everything you could imagine wanting to sketch. Including birds, people, dogs, hats, cats, buildings, ice sculptures... you get the idea...
So I'm going to try to persuade you to have a go at this technique, using structural lines to pin not just the shape but the colours and shadows. And see how easy and simple it becomes to get these interesting vivid sketches done yourself.
Let me know, too, your thoughts on this semi-abstract chap! Did it go wrong somewhere for you? Or is this the best thing ever - love to hear your thoughts :)

FOUR steps to SKETCH WINDOWS - Urban Sketching Hacks, Tips and Tricks

This is my simple guide to get you confident sketching windows! All in 4 simple steps. Including ink sketching AND watercolours too.
A great guide, I hope, for beginners, looking to simplify and enjoy their urban sketching a little more.
You might recognise this video from a few months ago - I'm going through my back catalogue at the moment making some small improvements to audio and shortening my videos a little bit too :)
We cover getting the shape, the details and the 3D nature of windows (they aren't flat you know!?!). And then we also move into how you can add tone, and make sure you're getting the light reflecting off the windows.
Windows are beautiful details to add into sketches, but I remember when I was starting out it always made me anxious when it came to adding them.
Well, here is the benefits of all that anxiety and trial and error - a really simple technique for getting effective and interesting windows!
I hope you enjoy :)
