Try This NEW Fountain Pen Technique in your URBAN SKETCHING - Simple Tutorial
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

Urban sketching is all about being lightweight, mobile and having fun capturing the essence of a scene.
And what is more lightweight and mobile than a sketchbook and a couple of pens?
Well, the obvious answer to that is just one pen - but here I'll show you the advantage of trying to sketch with two different fountain pens and inks. All the inks I use are up on my website (urbansketch.co.uk - the 'supplies' tab) so check them out if you're interested, BUT, the exact inks aren't important - in fact, I bought them just as normal writing inks before realising how much loved sketching with them.
In this scene we'll use these two inks to create a lovely tonal sketch... but that's not all.
We'll also use our pens a bit like watercolour pans - you'll see what I mean when we get sketching. And it's a really fun way to sketch, get tone and shadow and have a play in your sketching.
So, if you want to have a bit of fun capturing tone and detail in your sketching, without faff and heavy weight equipment, check out this simple urban sketching tutorial using fountain pens!

Simplifying Complexity with ink and watercolour - An Urban Sketching Tutorial
Today we are sketching a gorgeous little scene from Hydra, a small island near Athens.
This is a beautiful little sketch across two pages of my watercolour sketchbook. We use ink and watercolour techniques, with loose but vibrant colours.
Along the way we can make decisions, change positions of objects in our scene, and generally have a bit of fun chopping changing and moving things around! And we will, of course, still end up with a lovely sketch.
We are using loose and vibrant colours, on top of a wobbly and interesting pen sketch.
The sketch aims to get the biggest shapes, and pick out key features. By manipulating the positions of different features on the page, and suggesting details, and adding or eliminating other parts of the reference, we can make a potentially challenging image so simple to sketch and really get stuck in and enjoy the process.
We even add in a few people, and enjoy adding colours to them to make them an extra feature of the scene.
The colours build on the image, they don't overpower but are there to highlight key parts, bring a bit of life, and shadows also create lovely shapes.

Abstract Urban Sketching with Ink and Watercolour
Here is another quick, simple and fun sketch from a splash. A great way to produce an abstract and loose urban sketch, with ink and watercolour paints.
The idea is simple - make a splash with your watercolours, pick your favourite colours or experiment with a couple of new colours.
From that splash, pick out shapes and textures and build up your scene.
A super quick sketch today, using pencil, normal water soluble ink and one watercolour we can create a fun, lively and interesting tonal sketch.
Highly recommend trying this technique out - it's a lot of fun, and very freeing!
I use the following:
Size 2 mop, size 8 round brush
Permanent alizerin, cobalt blue
Lamy Safari pen
Black ink
Watch and enjoy :)

Sketch a UNIQUE DOG PORTRAIT - An Easy Ink and Watercolour Sketch Tutorial
Today we'll be sketching this characterful and unique dog portrait, using our watercolour paints and ink pens and our good old urban sketching tips and techniques.
The idea here is to focus not on drawing a dog... instead, we'll start with shapes, and shapes and shapes! Of course!
The shapes help us to define our lovely dog's outline - and then, from the shapes we can build up the planes of the dog. The planes are the different tufts of fur, patches of light, areas of shadow - by identifying these we will automatically end up with a beautiful sketch and a characterful little dog portrait.
The best bit is yet to come though, by producing such a geometric sketch we can move on and use these planes and patches to paint, applying splodges and splashes of paint in these areas creating a quirky and fun finished portrait.
I'm sure you'll find the process interesting, but please let me know in the comments if you agree!!

Fude Nib Fountain Pen Urban Sketching Tutorial // Sailor Fude Pen
Here is a fun sketch with a fude pen - a really lovely bit of kit, designed for calligraphy, but brilliant for sketching and bringing all sorts of bold, fine and textured lines into our sketching.
When we are urban sketching, especially, getting out and about - what is more lightweight than one pen and a sketchbook??
You might have seen me use it in a few of my tutorials before as well. If you want to see exactly which pens I use, check out the supplies tab on my website - urbansketch.co.uk
Now, there are, of course, alternatives - such as using a felt pen, or a range of different fine liners. That said, these alternatives aren't not quite the same either.
In this sketch we'll look at how we can use outlines and shapes to create our image, and then a range of different textures and techniques to play with our fude pen.
We'll treat the image as a series of layers, and these different fude pen techniques will separate those layers out and give us a quirky and fun sketch.

Sketch Expressive Portraits Using Ink and Wash - Simple Drawing Tutorial

Sketching people, a wonderful hobby! And a scary one perhaps.
Our eyes are very good at picking up when a person isn't quite right, we're wired for this, it's what we're socially evolved to do.
But in art we're trying to do something different - we're trying to express not just the person, but also ourselves and our personality. We want fun, we want relaxation and we want to put ourselves on the page with our ink and pen sketching.
In this tutorial I'll show you a lovely technique to easily capture a portrait - or in this case TWO portraits!
I'll use a continuous line drawing to capture the face, talking about how to build up details and facial features. Using 'anchors' to make it look that much better.
We'll move on to a light wash of water, then a bold brush pen - this is where we get to pick the shapes that are working, simplify things, and provide easy and simple shadows.
Finally, the background, a nice warm ink wash - here we'll make things pop, using wet and dry ink sketching to produce a range of tones.
These kind of techniques are great for getting out and about urban sketching, or drawing or painting portraits at home.
The techniques are simple, great for beginners, but also important fundamentals of drawing and sketching to build on if your building your own style!

How to DRAW ANYTHING in 3D // Sketching in Planes
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

So, you'll definitely be sketching in planes already - for some things. For example, if you draw a box, a house, or something that is obviously a geometric shape.
That's just simple and how our brains work.
But what if I told you that you could train yourself, with a few simple tips and tricks, to draw literally anything in 3D by focussing on the planes in an object?
Well, you definitely can!
This little sketching tutorial breaks down what planes are, what they mean in urban sketching, buildings and normal geometric objects. But then also takes it to the next step showing you how to apply these same principles in sketches of nature - including trees, cliffs and rocks.
I've no doubt that this simple technique and easy tutorial has the potential to help you take your sketching to the next level!

How to Make Your Sketching Simpler - Even if it doesn't look it - Urban Sketching Tutorial

Yes, the scene looks so complicated - a Cathedral, Ely Cathedral to be precise.
And YES, we could make it a really complicated sketch - but I didn't want to.
I'm adding this, as well, to my 'famous places' series - a series of sketches of famous landmarks that show that simple and easy sketches can be super effective. You don't need to be overawed by your choice of scene :)
Instead, lets make it easy, fun, relaxing and simple to get our urban sketch down today. Including a cathedral, millions of windows, and a crowd of people having tea on the lawn. So much going on :)
Instead of getting drawn in to all the myriad of complicated details, instead we can make things amazingly simple - focus on those big shapes, suggest details, don't worry about mistakes, and keep things loose and gentle until you're sure you can be a bit bolder.
Most of all, stop BEFORE you've gone to far - this means taking a step back every couple of minutes and thinking, 'am I happy with this?'.
It doesn't have to be perfect, and it really doesn't matter if it goes all wrong. But I bet, if you start simplifying things a bit, you'll be happy far more often than not :)

How and Why to Use a Platinum Ink Fountain Pen Converter / Platinum Preppy

How to use an ink converter or fountain pen converter is an excellent question! Platinum produces the famous platinum preppy fountain pen - a brilliant budget fountain pen option. They also produce 'Carbon Black' ink - which is a very water fast ink - but expensive to buy in cartridge form.
Ink converters, also known as fountain pen converters, allow us to use almost any ink in our fountain pen - no just the branded ink cartridges that platinum provide for us!
That's right, it's really easy to use any other ink.
This is not just cheaper, it's also better for the environment.
There is, of course, a catch - you must make sure the ink you want to use is fountain pen safe - we'll discuss this and give a common example of an ink to avoid in this video.

Hot Pressed Paper, Soluble Ink - So Good Together! Urban Sketching Tutorial
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Usually I use cold pressed paper to get those beautiful textures and marks on the page, but sometimes, especially when sketching loose and fast, I do love to use hot pressed paper.
You can check my channel (here) for a video I’ve done previously on the difference between hot and cold pressed paper – but in short, hot pressed paper is flat and slippy. Our ink, colours, fingers and everything can slip and slide more easily over it.
This leads to some fascinating and fun effects.
So, in today’s sketch I’ll use water soluble ink to create a loose and lively sketch of a panoramic city centre, and on top of that I’ll use water to produce tone and shape.
This is the kind of sketch you can easily do out and about with a travel brush or water brush and fountain pen. Then, if you want, bring home to add colour or leave as a beatiful monochromatic image.
Let me know in the comments what you think of this simple and quick sketching technique.
Do you often use hot pressed paper yourself? Will you give it a go and see if it suits you?
As an urban sketcher I’m always looking for shortcuts that mean I can grab a scene and sketch and draw it quickly, using a combination of ink and watercolour, but always simplifying and having fun. Being flexible and making my sketching techniques easy is key to this – making it more simple to be accurate, but also to bend and break rules and be experimental!

Line Work and Composition Tips to Avoid Boring Sketches

This is the biggest learning point I remember from when I first set out on my drawing journey. And by using this simple compositional trick it my drawings and sketches I can see a huge difference - the same scene, still life, portrait or whatever else can go from boring to fascinating.
And all it takes is a little planning, or a little bit of artistic licence.
And what is this trick? Well it's honestly really simple, really easy, and you'll either kick yourself that you've not worked it out already OR you'll already be doing it yourself.
It's all about relationships, how you position objects in your scene - and this counts for still life sketches and drawings, just as much for how you position people on a street you are urban sketching, or the angle of reference photo you use for the grandest of oil paintings.
Watch this short video to find out more, including a couple of easy examples!

An Easy Sketch Using NEGATIVE SPACE - Urban sketching and watercolour tutorial
Today's sketch is all about the negative space! And I'd love your opinion - is this enough, too much or just right?
Learning how to use negative space in your urbansketching is really important, it speeds things up - but also it adds drama, simplicity and makes your end images so much more effective. If you're a beginner in urban sketching then start to learn how to use negative space as soon as you can and you'll see your art sky rocket in quality and interest.
Whatever your answer, I'm sure there will be a range of opinions, and they're all valid. And that is what makes art and sketching so brilliant and inclusive.
The reason I love negative space is it's a simple technique for simplifying scenes, whilst make them punchy and interesting.
It isn't as easy as not drawing something, you actually need some skill and confidence to pick the right area, the right amount and the right shapes to make negative space effective.
In this easy sketch tutorial I'll talk you through the decisions I make, and how I choose where to add colour, where to add hatching and where to leave completely blank.

Easy Urban Sketching - Pencil, then Colour, then Brown Ink!

Today we are having fun, re-ordering our sketching process and starting with the colours!
What on earth would we do this for??
Well, if just experimenting and having fun isn't enough of a reason... I guess I can explain myself a bit more!
When we start with colours, for me, it gives a different feel. The colours become looser and when we add our ink, suddenly the shapes become adaptable, and we can add our own stamp and creativity to it.
It also means we take a super simple approach to our inital sketch, my pencil sketch today being a few rectangles and triangles thrown on the page. And learning these simplification skills is really valuable!
Finally, it means we can use some really lovely soluble inks - today I'm using brown in, which washes out to become a lovely warm almost pink colour.
Let me know what you think in the comments!

Sketching Bikes Made Incredibly Easy - Urban Sketching Basics!

Bikes are everywhere in our urban scenes, popped against walls, cycling past us as we sketch or take our reference photos.
They're also really really hard to sketch...
UNTIL NOW!
Yes, even bikes can actually be made incredibly easy. Bikes, bicycles, cycles, cylists, motorbikes, you name it, they can all be sketched using a few simple steps. And before you know it, all your sketches will be filled with bikes.
Well, maybe...
We just have to break them down into simple, manageable and achievable shapes.
And that's exactly what we'll be doing in this short video - starting with how to break bikes down, using easing sketching steps and shapes, we'll then work through three quick examples so you'll be ready to sketch bikes in all your scenes, quickly, easily and with confidence!
Enjoy!

Urban Sketch - Loose Semi-Abstract Ink and Watercolour Tutorial

This scene is incredibly complicated - so many shadows, people, flashes of light, details, perspective. Everything that's scary to sketch, right?
Well never fear, just simplify! Here we focus on pen techniques that 'suggest' detail, making a scene look like a really intricate sketch, when really it's just a simple collection of lines and shapes. From these lines and shapes evolves something beautiful.
After this we splash on some colours - the exact colours aren't important - what's fun here is the beauty of letting our colours do their thing! We add on a range of complimentary colours, moving them about the page, with plenty of water - and hey presto a beautiful glaze of colour emerges.
At the end we really add some punches of strong colours - bringing out key details and highlighting the figures we've sketched too.
Please leave a commenting letting me know what you think about the colours - is this the kind of sketch you like? Or it is too random to be good?

Sketching becomes automatic after a while, and it's all because a few simple tips, tricks and techniques become muscle memory. The more you sketch, the more automatic and easy it becomes, because you simply don't have to think about every little thing.
One of the most important things I learnt early in my sketching, drawing and urban sketching days was the importance of a couple of simple tips and tricks to get objects, people and focal points seated correctly in my sketches.
In this video I'll take you through those points in an easy, simple way - of course using a couple of little examples along the way to make understanding this kind of 'drawing theory' more interesting and fun.
Practice is, of course, important, so I'd recommend picking up a pencil or pen and putting these tips into action. See what happens, where it takes you, and whether you think it makes a difference to your sketching!

Urban Sketching: Why Simplification Always Works - Painting Westminster Abbey

Here is another of my landmarks and famous places series - please leave a comment if you've got another suggestion of where to sketch next!
One of the main reasons I wanted to do this mini-series of urban sketches was to show you that it's really ok to simplify even the most recognisable of places.
So yes I would say that simplification ALWAYS works in sketching, and whether you're a beginner or experienced sketcher it's worth remembering and practicing these types of skills!
It can feel, perhaps, that when you are near something very recognisable, our sketches and art needs to fully live up to the fame and beauty, to make a perfect sketch.
I promise you, this is NOT the case.
In fact, it's the opposite!
Because these landmarks are so famous, we can take our urban sketching skills and creativity to the max. As long as we get the basic shapes, we can actually have a lot of fun with simplification, manipulation, changes to colours, and whatever else you can think of.
All it needs, is a bit of confidence and a bit of creativity.
So, here is my sketch of Westminster Abbey, in London - simplified to the max, but still fun and recognisable!

Soluble Ink and Watercolour - Urban Sketching for Beginners

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
So this is rapidly becoming my favourite simple technique for urban sketching.
Instead of sketching our lines first, we take our watercolours and go straight for it. Capturing our shapes and colours and the light on the page with those loose brush strokes.
Afterwards we can enforce some structure on the page, using a fountain pen with soluble ink to grab those shapes, suggest some details and finish off our sketch.
This technique can feel scary to start with, those colours can look like they're out of control, but they ARE NOT! A little practice and faith, and you'll be sketching away in no time producing lovely loose light and airy sketches every time!
My aim is to make urban sketching fun and interesting, take away the stress of perfectionism and instead enjoy exploring different techniques with a variety of loose sketches like this.
As an urban sketcher I'm at my happiest when I can pass on the joy of simple and fun sketching techniques!

This is a loose sketch of Fortnum and Mason in London. In this easy tutorial, I'll talk you through my loose sketching techniques for urban sketching and urban sketchers!
Fortnum and Mason always feels very Christmassy to me, which is why I've chosen to release this video today - now I know the sketch isn't super Christmass-y BUT it's important to keep your sketching and creative motivations in mind if you're looking to keep that creative spark alive.
In this easy tutorial, I'll take you step by step through my sketching techniques, in my fun and loose style that I love using for my urban sketching. This gives us a really interesting semi-abstract image - something recognisable though certainly not figurative.
For me, sketching with ink and watercolours, is just as much about celebrating the watercolour paints and what they can (and want) to do as it is about sketching an exact location or scene.
So join me for a fun little sketch and lets see what we can produce :)

Cobalt blue, one of my favourite watercolour colours. Let’s have a look at it in a little watercolour swatching short and see what it really looks like!

So it’s time for to update you on what’s currently in my watercolour palette – what are my favourite colours for urban sketching and why?
This video should give you all the answers. But please let me know in the comments any questions, thoughts or challenges!
I’ll show you my palette, and quickly explain why I use this specific design of palette. Before swatching out each of the watercolour paints in my palette, and discussing their pros and cons.
This is supposed to be a quick look inside my palette, something to give you ideas/inspiration, and it also helps answer the most common question I get – what watercolours do you use??
These are mostly Daniel Smith colours, though a couple (e.g. ultramarine) are Winsor Newton. I prefer Daniel Smith for their vibrancy and their texture when you squeeze them out into a tube.
It’s worth noting that I have several palettes – this is specifically my urban sketching palette. It’s small, portable, hard wearing, and the colours are interesting and heavily granulating. Making for awesome textures.
For watercolours and illustrations I have different palettes, with flatter perhaps less vibrant but more easily mixed colours. Though the idea is still the same, lots of shadows, lots of blues, and a couple of other primary colours in there too.
I think my particular urban sketching palette is fairly unique – lots of the colours are popular amongst all sorts of sketchers, but I’ve not yet seen someone with this same collection so I’m going to (for now) at least pretend it’s totally unique 😊
