When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this urban sketching tutorial we will look at how to break down a scene quickly, separating out the planes of the image an thus allowing us to focus our colour in just a few key places.
This use of minimal colour or a restricted palette makes our sketching more lightweight, more mobile and more punchy.
It's really easy as well, once we have our eye in, to start making these lovely little decisions to simplify and reduce the complexity of out colours - thus producing a lovely sketch with less effort.

Why you NEED to think in SHAPES - Make Sketching Easy!

Shapes are absolutely fundamental in almost all forms of art. And this is never more true than in sketching, drawing and urban sketching.
To break down a big complicated scene into shapes means you can take control of your art, make decisions on simplification vs detail and start to get to grips with proportions, perspective and other things that make your sketches and art look great.
This class is a excerpt from one of my skillshare classes, recently released. This class has 11 lessons in it, and focusses on 'Direct Watercolour and Ink Sketching' - using watercolours straight onto the paper with no ink or pencil lines, instead, adding ink after the watercolours to bring structure whilst celebrating the uniqueness of watercolour paints.
As such, this lesson looks at shapes in both ink sketching AND in watercolour painting - and you know what? They're still the same - shapes are shapes no matter how you paint them.
What we discuss in this lesson is simply ways to make finding shapes easy, to look for the biggest shapes and also recognise that details like windows - well, they're just small shapes too.
I talk about this concept in all of my sketches and I though it was about time that I just did a brief explanatory video to make the point even clearer!

Urban Sketching: It's EASY when you SIMPLIFY - tips and tricks to break down complex scene

Today we are urban sketching a characterful and complex street view in St Neots.l, my home town. But however complex the view there are ALWAYS tips and tricks we can use to simplify our scene and create something wonderful that really captures our imagination.
And that is what today is all about. A tutorial guide to show you that Urban Sketching with ink pen and watercolour really is that easy!
This is a reupload of one of my most popular videos, with a new voiceover and audio. It's shorter than the last video, but gets across all the same points - and it's one of my all time favourite sketches. On this day many months ago, it all went right for me - the shapes, the simplifying and the colours - so here it is again, how I successfully simplified this scene, despite the details and perspective. And produced something I love looking back on months and months down the line!
I will talk you through, step by step, how I set the scale of this imagine and use simple comparative measurements to make life easier for us. The sketching is all about using big shapes to set the scene, and suggesting details rather than trying to sketch every last window perfectly.
If you check out the chapters you'll get a flavour of the kinds of tips, tricks and hacks throughout this whole tutorial. Alternatively join me for the whole sketch as we relax and have a bit of fun sketching the day away.
As ever, the focus of today's tutorial is simplicity, accepting errors and embracing the random moments that give us happy little accidents and real beauty in our image.
In addition, I am trying out a 'fude pen' - a wonderful textured pen with a flexible nib, but still capable of acting mostly like a fine liner. The best of both worlds? You decide!

COMPLEX MADE EASY - Shapes and Outlines - Urban Sketching Tutorial

This is a sketch of a busy street in Cambridge - it's busy not just in the people and cyclists walking and pedalling around, but also because of the perspective, the slope of the hill, the up and down nature of the buildings, and all the different colours and styles of houses and buildings going on.
So, how can we make this relaxing to sketch?
Well, there is, of course, an easy way!
We will start off by considering shapes and outlines - but unlike normal we won't actually be starting with sketching shapes!
I'll talk you through exactly why in this tutorial, but suffice to say for now there are good reasons in this sketch.
Shapes are, of course, a fundamental way to make sketching easier, and something that beginners and the most advanced sketchers in the world all practice and need to master. But sometimes (like in this photo) it can be easier to start somewhere else, and leave the shapes for a few minutes!
So, why don't you join me for this step-by-step tutorial to get this alive and exciting feeling urbansketch, using simple techniques and basic principles that we can apply to all sorts of sketches in the future!

In this little video we are, of course, sketching some flowers.
These flowers, something like poppies, are sketched from the imagination. Our flower sketch uses loose ink and watercolours, using wet on wet techniques to create a beautiful and vivid image.
I'd love to hear what you think of this loose flower sketch - is it too loose? Is the ink good or was it even better without when just those lovely watercolours were on the page?

Wet-on-Wet Watercolours - A Short Beginners Introduction
Support my channel by buying me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos!
In this little tutorial we are talking all about wet on wet watercolours. Consider it a primer for beginners in wet on wet and loose watercolour sketching where we will cover the basics to get you started.
Wet on wet watercolours can be scary at the start - so loose, so free, so uncontrollable? Well actually, they're beautiful and easy, and if you are a beginner this should give you a good start in how to paint with wet on wet watercolour paints.
This is an excerpt from my latest Skillshare class, all about Direct Watercolour and Ink Sketching, exploring wet-on-wet watercolour painting in urban scenes. To find out more you can follow my affiliate link here - http://bitly.ws/viDd - which will give you some money off a year subscription and let you have a free week to explore all the courses on there.
Of course, people spend lifetimes mastering this beautiful art, so in just 10 minutes we can't cover everything - but as with all sketching and painting techniques we can make them easy, and simple and learn through exploring them ourselves.
I love using wet on wet watercolours they are truly unique - no other artistic medium can produce these effects, only watercolours and nothing else. So why not explore the textures and beauty that it can create!?
It's also how I love painting - whether I'm sketching with a pen, or watercolours, or both - the colour part is always loose and lively. Watercolours just love to paint themselves, if you let them.
SO if you're excited, please join me in some loose and fun watercolour sketching and lets see what this can offer us as painters, sketchers and urban sketchers!

When I reach £1000 I'll upgrade my tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos!
Today we are sketching a scene from a splodge! This is a great fun technique, for quickly and spontaneously grabbing gorgeous urban sketch scenes.
If you're starting out urban sketching then this is a great fun technique to try - and experiment with!
I'm going through my back catalogue and improving some of my old videos - just simple improvements to audio with my knew mic and software, and in some doing some new voiceovers! So you might (or might now) recognise this video from a few months ago :)
We will start off creating an interesting watercolour splodge, before crafting this into a fully fledged, easy, interesting and characterful urban sketch!
I'll take you step-by-step along my processes, from initial watercolour, to ink application, to creating a fascinating frame.
Stick around to the very end to see how the last bit of ink work really makes a huge difference!!
The pen I use is a platinum preppy pen, with 'absolute brown' ink - both of these are in my Amazon associates links if you want to find out more about them.
