Continuous Line Urban Sketching - Loose Art Style Tutorial
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
In this urban sketching tutorial we'll look at my favourite technique - continuous line sketching - and how this produces beautiful effects and a dreamy loose style.
I use elements of continuous line drawing in most of my sketching, simply because I think it is brilliant. It forces you to simplify, to leave things out, to connect things. I think it's a habit that everyone should get into, simply for the benefits it gives to your development as an artist, right from the beginning.
When we're using continuous line sketching for our urban sketches, we don't need to be rigid about how we apply it. Instead of feeling the pressure to continue our single line drawing the whole way, it's ok to take the pen off occasionally, to relax and enjoy the process. And gradually learn how continous line drawing can be used to create a wonderful loose style of art and urban sketching!

An Easy Watercolour Sketching Tutorial - Paint Tyne Bridge, Newcastle
Support my channel by buying me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach £1000 I'll upgrade my tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos!
Here is another landmark sketching video, this time we are sketching 'Tyne Bridge' in Newcastle.
This is actually from a photo I took when I was there a few weeks ago, and I loved the view and contrasts looking up the river so, of course, couldn't resist sketching it!
The sketch, this time, is done with a quick pencil framework, but adding and layering our colours on top.
I'll take you step by step through my processes, and in particular we will talk a lot about how and why I make decisions on simplification of my painting. To make life manageable, and the make the painting more effective and more achievable!

Loose urban sketching is so much fun, but a few people have messaged me to ask how to move towards loose lines, creatively introducing character into our wibbly wobbly lines. Whilst maintaining accuracy and realism at the same time.
In this short tips and tricks videos, I'll show you a couple of my absolute favourite techniques for doing this, with fine liners or fountain pens. To create fun, loose and lively urban sketches.
I'll also show you a couple of ways you can practice, aside from strictly just urban sketching - using simple drawing exercises to relax and improve our skills at the same time!

Choose Your Scene or Composition in 3 Simple Steps - Urban sketching tutorials

Sketching is the easy part, if you've chosen the perfect reference, scene or view point.
But getting your reference right doesn't have to be hard either, as long as you approach it with a systematic mind and keep a few simple principles in mind.
It can be very upsetting to keep trying a scene, over and over, and never quite get it right. In this video I'll help you avoid that, giving you my best tips and tricks to choosing a scene that you'll be sketching far more effectively, and suddenly finding your art is improved!
I think about my references in three steps - discussed in detail in this video. I'll walk you through my thinking process, and give you a few useful examples to help you understand the process more clearly!
When it comes to choosing our sketching, painting or drawing reference, we just have to ask ourselves three questions - What, Where, How???
Watch this video to find out more, or use the chapters to jump to the bit you want to know more about :)

Easy Watercolour Urban Sketching - Tower Bridge, London
Today we are sketching Tower Bridge, London. A rather unique and recognisable landmark, and for that reason perhaps both tempting and intimidating to sketch.
We can be really abstract and loose in laying down our colours, and still have a fun and recognisable image at the end. You really don't have to stress about accuracy at every stage of your sketching, just focus on the processes that make you happy!
In this video I want to show you that its actually great fun to put your own stamp on well known landmarks. We can still simplify, be creative, and be playful, whilst also producing something recognisable for the place we're sketching.
I'm also using this as a start to my mini 'landmarks' series - I'm going to attempt, over a few videos, to sketch famous landmarks from google streetview. Using experimental approaches to 'travel the world', from my studio!
Let me know if you've any ideas for me to sketch!

Negative Space - What You NEED to Know to get Started!

Negative space is one of those confusing concepts in sketching, drawing and urban sketching/painting. Either it feels really hard and impossible to understand. Or you're sat there thinking - 'isn't it just, um... not painting??'
Well, while in some senses both these reponses are right, actually, I would argue that negative space is a key but simple skill to understand.
Initially, it might take a little thought and planning, but as you develop and practice it becomes second nature!
I'll talk you through, in this short tips and tricks tutorial I'll explain...
1) What is negative space!
2) Why it's important!
3) How negative space can save you time, and help simplify your art, drawing and sketching!
4) How negative space starts to inform your composition, and help guide the viewer through an image!

Simple Urban Sketch - Easy Hatching for Shadow, Light and Negative Space
Here's a really simple way to sketch a scene that incorporates both lots of lovely greens and trees, alongside some picturesque village-y buildings.
Please leave a comment letting me know what you think? Is this much negative space great or boring?
We will be using minimal equipment - one 0.2mm fineliner and a size 2 mop brush, on A4 cold pressed paper.
We focus on an enjoyable pen sketch, using simple shapes and measurements to guide us towards accuracy. Before building up details and contrast using really simple hatching techniques.
The colours come next, and we'll be focussing on how to mix lovely greens - for example, how do we take a base green and make it brighter, duller, more realistic, or deeper? Well watch this video to find out exactly how I do this!

Really Quick Urban Sketching - Easy Tutorial in 10 minutes!
Hello everyone! In this 10 minute (give or take...) urban sketch tutorial, I'll show you how to use line work to capture an urban scene, and add loose and fun colours to make the scene come to life.
We'll talk about how to create variations in your green washes, how to leave negative space and, if you stick around to the end, how to create bold shapes from negative space to make your painting and sketching really punchy / interesting.
My tutorials are all about having fun, simple sketching tips for people who want to do more in less time, and not spend their time worrying and stressing.
Painting and sketching can be really fun, easy, and enjoyable - but too often we get stuck in the detail.
Pushing ourselves, stretching our comfort zone, but doing it in a relaxed way - that's how I love to sketch, paint and use watercolours.
Hopefully you'll agree :)

This Dreamy Landscape Technique will give you GOOSEBUMPS!
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
This is a really wonderful technique for sketching a simple landscape, but making it look amazing.
The joy of watercolours is the textures and mixes that you can create, if you just let the pigments do their thing!
In this simple sketching technique we use a fineliner or fountain pen to capture a silhouetted outline - then we add a couple of loose washes of paints, paying attention to how the paints move and just prompting and probing them to do the right thing!
There is nothing super hard or super clever about this, and it's a really wonderful, relaxing way to paint.
The materials I use are all listed on my website - urbansketch.co.uk under supplies, and I talk about the pigments as we use them. Of course!

UNIQUE PORTRAIT - in 3 SIMPLE STEPs - Sketching Tutorials

Recently I’ve been loving this portrait technique using three little steps – you might have seen me upload a few shorts using this technique too. Basically, I’ve been filling sketchbooks with these quirky, quick, fun and expressive portraits.
Expect a few more step-by-step tutorials along these lines.
I’m finding it fun to sketch this way, because it lets me sketch loose, but also be bold and build up an image in a clear step-by-step manner. The focus isn’t on total accuracy, but on important features, and make the image interesting.
I’ll take you through exactly what I mean in this tutorial, including discussing the kinds of references you might use, and why sketching loved ones (or even yourself) is so much harder than taking other references or sketching people en plein air.
What I hope to do is inspire you to go out there, no focus on being ‘right’ but still enjoy capturing people either at home, in the studio, or out and about!

This video is all about sketching loose - getting that easy going feel in your sketches, and feeling confident to sketch, simplify and enjoy the scenes around you!
I had a long think about what my top tips are, and here they are - my six top hints, tips and tricks for sketching and drawing loose, ideal for improving your urban sketching and more.
Sketching is the art of producing quick and expressive drawings or paintings representing the chief features of an object or scene.
Loose sketching takes this a step further - we use our sketching skills in a looser and more relaxed way. This gives sketches a spontaneous, easy going and energetic or characterful feel.
How can I sketch more loose? How to I loosen up my pen work? And do you have any tips to make my art more relaxed? Are three of the most common question I get - and so I finally got round to making a video to answer these questions!
So, here it is, my six top tips to sketch more loosely!
They aren't rocket science, and you might have heard a couple of them before - but I also imagine a couple of them with be novel or new.

Direct Watercolour THEN Ink! Simple Urban Sketching Tutorials
Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!

Simple direct colours - https://youtu.be/oatytIn3a04
In this fun and loose watercolour urban sketch we will be going straight into our sketching with watercolours.
That's right, no sketching, no practice, no ink, no hard lines to draw everything together (no pun intended either!).
But it's not as hard as it sounds, in fact, it's quite simple, quick and wonderfully expressive.
I'll start by using a 1 inch flat brush - this is great because it allows you to immediately capture long straight edges, allowing us to pull together the shapes making up an image quickly and easily.
Just like with normal sketching by keeping things loose and light with our watercolour paints we can always come back later and correct and move things.
These are the joys of watercolour sketching.
I'll show you in this easy, fully narrated and step-by-step tutorial how I go about applying watercolours direct to our watercolour paper and producing these lovely sketches quickly and without stress. A lovely relaxing and freeing way to sketch, draw and paint.

Loose Continuous Line Urban Sketch in 10 Minutes - Tutorial
This little art tutorial is an urban sketching first - i.e. me doing a 10 minute challenge in, you guessed it, 10 minutes.
I really liked how this sketch came out - I used one long continuous line to capture all the line work, before adding a loose glaze of colours on top. The result a simple, but effective and loose, watercolour and ink sketch.
Continuous line sketching is such a wonderful way of capturing scenes, loosely having to choose details, and focus on features like perspective and flow of the image to keep your sketching interesting.
Here, for me, is an example that worked out just right!
But let me know, please, what you think :)

A Giant Sketch in JUST ONE LINE?? Use Your Fountain Pen to Urban Sketch

Now here is a really fun urban sketch using my fountain pen, one big line (or is it - I'll let you decide if it counts!), and a quick wash of water.
This sketch took me less than five minutes. Now, there is no need to rush BUT with a continuous line sketch it never feels like rushing to me.
Things just happy quickly - we make it simple, that makes it easy to be quick. In fact, I had no idea how long this took until I came to edit the video because I find this technique so absorbing.
If you want to join in, all you need is a normal pen or fountain pen. Even a biro would work - the ink just needs to be soluble, and that will let you create lovely shadows and tone really quickly!
Happy sketching, hope you enjoy this quick urban sketching tutorial!

How to Sketch Your Garden - A Simple Watercolour Demo
Today we'll be sketching this lovely little corner of, as it happens, my Mum's garden!
It's a great fun idea for what you can do to sketch from home, but STILL be sketching on location/en plein air.
Gardens are full of corners of interest. Be it a tree, a bird bath, little plants in pots, or so many other things! There are hundreds of possibilities even in the smallest of spaces.
So why not have a bit of fun sketching and painting.
It's a scene you could spend hours on, getting all those little details, petals, leaves, trees, bushes and everything else. But you can also have a lot of fun loosely sketching, bring out the lights, shadows and shapes.
Let me know in the comments what you think! Have you found a nice spot in your garden that you might have some fun with and sketch or paint?
The colours used are:
Pthalo green, quin gold, quin sienna, moon glow, lunar black, van dyke brown, magenta, pthalo blue, hansa yellow, Carmine

Painting SIMPLE Watercolour Figures - Semi-Abstract People, Crowds, Humans
Drawing, sketching and painting people can be a little scary. Especially in watercolour, where everything you do feels 'permanent', and controlling the water can make it hard to add little details or undo mistakes.
BUT, I'm here to persuade you that painting people in watercolour can be fun and simple.
I try to let go of my perfectionism, in all my sketching and painting, but especially with people, and watercolour figures.
It's amazing how simple a figure can be, and how easy it can be to sketch them, yet they remain super effective as a piece of art, or within a wider painting.
In this little tutorial I'll talk you through my processes for using loose colours, adding little details, thinking about whether proportions are important, and fundamentally, producing some quick, effective watercolour people!
