Diversity is key: an early June good forest walk-around.
This February, we popped well above freezing for a week or two and flower buds swelled. We then dipped back below -30C which is common for February. Because of that, nobody around here has any peaches.
Some apple and pear trees also have nothing. We still got about 25% of our pears and apples flowering, so we will get some. However, imagine if I just had peaches? I'd be in big trouble if I depended on it for income!
A well diverse portfolio of trees isn't the only thing. I discuss herb diversity when I discuss mosquitoes.
So come on a tour, let's see what is producing this week. We've got paw paws setting fruit!!! Could this be the year we get our first paw paws, or will the tree shed them? One things certain though, we got pollination and fruit set, without me hand pollinating! Yeah!!

14 Minutes of Paradise - What it's like to live in a permaculture food forest
My transition from Clueless Suburbanite to Permaculture and ecology-aware member of humanity has been a long one. It's a journey that started a few decades ago, but really started in earnest about 10 years ago. I felt a calling to something more meaningful. I felt the call of the forest.
Permaculture isn't something that needs to happen in a large scale. It's something that can happen in an apartment in the city. I visited my brother this past week (because my father is in Toronto General hospital for quadruple bypass surgery), and stayed there with him, my mother, my sister, and came together as a family to support our patriarch, and the best father a kid could have.
In the city, every day, I saw opportunity for permaculture. Even down on Bloor street in Toronto... for community groups to join, for park-edges to guerilla plant, for integration of energy, resiliency and community spaces, even on rooftops. There is so much opportunity to drive change, even inside North America's 4th largest city (bet you didn't know that!).
My own personal path towards permaculture was to move further out of the suburbs, just on the urban/rural fringe, and buy 4 acres of property (2 of which is a swamp), and just start planting. I turned dead grass into a lush vibrant food forest. I turned a dry dead hill into an ecosystem pond, and beating heart of the entire system.
... But more, I changed nearly every aspect of my life, to minimize consumption, minimize waste, maximize resiliency, maximize natural resources. Many sacrifices on what many people consider luxury "normalities" of a modern life. I still have a computer and internet (but mostly only so that I can broadcast this message to everyone)... We shop at garage sales and upcycle everything we can. I wear clothes until it's socially awkward (and my wife secretly throws it in the garbage). I basically don't spend money. Like... ever. We grow a significant portion of our own food, and we are conscious of where we buy what we need. We support local business always. We pay more for things, even though it's more inconvenient. If we want something, we try to wait a month to see if we still need it, and only THEN buy it. We eliminate impulse buying completely.
I track and find free things on the internet. Wood left at the side of the road can become emergency heat in the winter, a heart of a new hugenkulture bed, or even just habitat for insects when thrown on the ground. We grow our food focusing on how to bring in other life to enjoy it with us. We access loss to them. We accept nibbled greens. No, we CHERISH nibbled greens.
Simplifying your life is step 1 to becoming alive. Sacrificing what you think makes you happy, is the true path to happiness. Here is 14 minutes of what all my sacrifices and hard work have brought me and my family. Here is 14 minutes of a what it's like to live inside permaculture paradise.
Please consider starting your journey. Share this message with your loved ones and friends. This is the path to salvation for our planet. It's NOT too late, but it's getting very close. We MUST re-integrate human civilization and nature, and we must do it immediately. The time for analysis paralysis is over. Our time is running out, if we do not change drastically and right now.
And this is what that change looks like.
(It's better in every conceivable way.)

Permaculture Food Forest Tour - May 25, 2023
Today we talk about... well, mostly bugs. We also talk about peach leaf curl, some guilds, and the value of intrusive herbaceous layers into tree canopies.

After a rain, In the Permacuture Food Forest Garden
Also, I fixed a part of the pond! I have suspected we had a leak for a while and I've been trying to find it. It's really pronounced when I'm filling the pond, or after a large rain, and it takes forever to fill, OR it just doesn't fill back up at all. Well, after about a year trying to figure it out, I found it!

How to properly fill a hugelkulture raised garden bed and in situ worms - ft Brenton Thwaites
A lot of this video I angled the camera to show the bed, and didn't realize my face wasn't in the shot, so I thought I'd be silly and get Brenton Thwaites to explain some stuff to you. (Full story, when I was at my sisters she asked me if I knew who Brenton Thwaites was, and like a true shut-in I said no, then she showed me some pictures she lined up side/by side (the thumbnail)). I don't see it THAT MUCH, but there's definitely the odd picture where we look like clones. In fact, my mom looked at this one on the thumbnail and said to my sister "okay now show me the actor's photo". LOL

Just a side discussion I want to have on galvanized steel. Galvainization is done using Zinc, and the Zinc is used as a sacrificial plating, so that it gets eaten instead of the steel. Unfortunately, it can also have some other nasties in it like lead and cadmium in the molten zinc dip process.
We had a few people bring this up, and I think it's worth having an expanded discussion on - thank you kindly for the concern!
Using old galvanized steel like this should be done with caution, but it can be done. The leeching rate of the toxins only happens when the coating is exposed to both extreme moisture and also acidic conditions, which are unlikely to be present in your raised bed. However, to be extra safe, we can take some precautions.
For us, we made sure to orient the tin coating on the outside of the bed, so that there is never any soil contact. We will also monitor our soil and test for these things (but I do not expect to find them). We also made sure that the interior of the beds were in good condition (i.e. the metal wasn't rusting through, getting access to the coating on the outside from the inside - soil). On one panel there was a little backside rust, and we made sure to orient that on the bottom of the bed, and surround it with gravel to give better drainage there. I'm honestly not too worried about it.
However, it's important that we know that's something that we should be considering in our designs. For example, as much as I am okay with using the metal in this way, I wouldn't be okay with orienting the paint on the inside of the bed, in direct soil contact. That would likely still be okay, as long as the soil pH isn't overly acidic, but it's still just another barrier I'd like to have, so we might as well be extra safe. If I had no choice but to do that, then I would line the bed with greenhouse poly (making sure there is drainage at the bottom of course), however I wouldn't really want to rely on that never getting damaged, so I would probably just avoid it.
If someone feels that's even not a risk they'd like to take, then I would recommend avoiding using any galvanized coated metal at all, but as I said, almost all resources that I found which were well cited and referenced with research/science, it was stated that it was something to be aware of, but not to be overly concerned with. Just don't add aluminum sulphate to make the soil acidic and then grow blueberries in that bed.

Building raised beds using reclaimed barn wood
I don't need these yet, but I will probably want them one day.
Today we build some raised beds using reclaimed barn wood and metal siding. Anytime I can, I like to intercept things going into the waste stream. I go through the build to show you how we did it.
Many of these tips were learned from Sherry and Derek, over at Gardening in the North. She may have other tips for you as well! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHk8xZzWYjZv0pjfr9iOjxw

We boosted our ecosystem recreation swim pond with hundreds of native plants
What's growing in our pond? Lets take a look at the native plants we've boosted our pond with! In this video.
5AM next morning edit (before video went live - and yes, I woke up early with a dream about my food forest, then I couldnt sleep because I was thinking about this and couldnt stop): I had a sinking feeling that the haory plantain ID was wrong so I have done more research. Broad leaf plantain looks very different to Hoary plantain, and varieties of plantain can look very different from eachother, but even still, I didn't like the bottom of the leaf shape.
I won't know until it flowers, but I'm now pretty sure that this is actually Canadian Fleabane, Erigeron spp, and it would make sense if it was because I collected seed last fall to spread. If so, I may do a video on it this summer, because it's a plant that is despised and called a weed by many, but is a fantastic plant and attracts many different moths who feed exclusively on it, and do not harm other plants. I.e. exactly what you want to be doing... bringing in insect food for birds and other insects, in ways that don't cause them to eat your fruit.
Erigeron is also a fantastic bee plant, and absolutely has a home in any pollinator garden, and is very welcome here. It looks very much like a daisy, and I spread this everywhere last fall. I'm excited to see it join the wildflower hill guild!

This is your wake-up call - Start a Garden
This is your wake-up call to start building self sufficiency.
My prediction: We are 7-10 years away from massive societal change due to the End of Growth (See Richard Heinberg's work here, among thousands of other economists, and ecologists). You know what is also about 7-10 years away? Fruit if you plant trees TODAY.
That means that this could be the single most important year of your life. Start building your self sufficiency now, so that you and your family are prepared for what is coming?
What is coming? I discuss that in this video.

Grafting Pears, Plums, Cherries, Apples, and Peaches With Poppy
Lets graft and make a Frankenstein's monster apple tree.
I've seen some videos of people who were able to do cheery and plum to apple, since they are both Rosacea, however most internet wisdom says they must both be prunus, or malus, or pyrus for example. We figured we'd try it for fun.
What we do know works is cherry to plum, plum to apricot, etc. Prunus to Prunus.
That's the point, try to experiment. With grafting, the cost is nothing!

A permaculture consultation with Colin and Maia (Zone 3)
Disclaimer: I have closed consultations for the time being - I just simply don't have the time to get to all the demand. I am incredibly honored that so many of you want me to help you design your projects. Perhaps when life gets a little less hectic I will do more of these, and even do this full time. I do really enjoy helping people out.
In today's episode, Colin and Maia wanted to share their consultation with everyone (it was their idea infact!). What an incredible couple these two are. Newly married, child on the way, just jumped on a large suburban/semi-rural property, and want to build a food forest.
In this consult, we discuss access, water, grading, plant selection, location, soil pH, site design, site goals, geothermal, ponds, raised beds, even a hockey rink, and all sorts of other great stuff.
Unfortunately, the video cut out and when we rejoined we talked about pollination, fertility building, thermal microclimates, plant selection, and a few other things, which weren't captured by the recording. However, I think enough of this video was captured, that I think there's value in sharing it.
One last thing, as much as Colin and Maia didn't mind their information being made semi-public, please still respect their privacy. We are all a family here.
Happy growing season everyone! I'm hoping that Colin and Maia will share their progress in maybe a fall "viewer vids" series. I wasn't able to do one last year due to just how incredibly busy work got, but I'm hoping to be able to do one this year.
Much love,
Keith
