Make INSANE soil fertility with chickens and biochar
For more info, check out my brand new biochar playlist. If you want to NERD OUT on char, this is the place for you. Not only is it great for sequestering and drawing down carbon/CO2, but it's also a 2000 year soil amendment. It holds water and nutrient. It magnifies soil microbiology. It flattens out nutrient/water spikes. It's a natural moderator and buffer. It filters toxins. What DOESN'T it do? Laundry. It doesn't do laundry.

Vancouver Pt 1 - Guerrilla Gardening JACKPOT
Offset your carbon footprint on Wren: https://www.wren.co/start/cpl. The first 100 to sign up will get their first month of the subscription covered by Wren for free!
Timestamps:
00:04 - What we will talk about - Whistler, Vancouver, City design, transportation, Guerrilla Gardening
01:21 - Why was I in British Columbia? Well, our kids are getting older, and we wanted to take them somewhere special while we have them all in the house. Whistler Photos/vidoes - STUNNING.
04:09 - Guerrilla Gardening discusion in a parking lot. Key topics like planting natives, where/how to get away with it, and responsibility.
08:20 - Blackberries - how your Guerrilla Gardening can go VERY WRONG. Warnings.
10:26 - Mass transportation is a HUGE part of the climate change solution. Here's why.
12:16 - Why the free market will not, or more accurately CAN NOT fix our problems. This has socio-political implications. Your VOTES matter, and this is why. Using Whistler mass transit as an example of world class cities (also citing Copenhagen and Amsterdam). Skip this section if you hate politics stuff.
19:02 - GUERRILLA GARDENING JACKPOT - a must see.
25:34 - University of BC and permaculture/garden themes throughout the campus. Signals towards how society is changing. Universities ARE indoctrination centers (there you go, Ben Shapiro), but they are indoctrinating our next generation to CARE about the world and how we treat it. Sign me up for some indoctrination!
___
Today's video wasn't really planned. I got stuck in Vancouver without my family for 2 days, so what is a permie to do? Well, probably walk around Vancouver and look for community gardens and food forest projects to film!
Part 1 - The first day at the Hotel, walking around discussing the trip, blackberries, guerrilla gardening, and city design (mass transportation, walkable cities, taxation and government) and using those concepts to discuss possible paths forward for human society.
Part 2 - Coming soon, hoping on the bus and spending 12 hours exploring Urban Vancouver City, going to community gardens, Food forests, and actually residents that I walk by who have killer urban gardens and talking to them! Yes, I'm that kind of guy. Plus, every gardener loves being told that someone else appreciates what they are doing!
So lets hit part 1 running, come with me and enjoy the show. It's a bit of a potpourri today - but it all links via Permaculture. In fact, one of the main underlying themes of this episode is that ... once you infect your brain with permaculture, you start seeing permaculture considerations EVERYWHERE.
All the best,
Keith

Eggshells, how to use chemistry to optimize calcium for your garden
Today we're going to be talking about the best way to use egg shells in your garden. The best way to get a calcium boost to your plants (and also a P, K, Fe, Zn, Mg, Mn boost!). It's all about turning Calcium Carbonate (a bound-up mineral) into Water Soluble Calcium (calcium that your plants can use immediately). For that, we need to do some chemistry. Don't worry, it's not difficult.
Note: If you are using method 1, once your reaction stops, if you still have eggshells remaining, you likely ran out of acid. So seive the solution into a bottle, put the remaining eggshells in a new acid bath. If the reaction still doesn't go, then you are all out of calcium carbonate and are done. Drain the acid ajd put what's left of the eggshells into the compost.
Note x2 for anyone thinking "oh no! CO2!!!!": this will happen regardless. So no, this is not a new CO2 source. It's similar to the silly argument that we shouldn't compost because it's a huge CO2 source. That's just a terrible bad faith argument, because we either make CO2 or we make Methane. THAT is the choice. I.e. what is the other option? To freeze the compost and prevent microbiology from closing the loop? Remember, nature doesn't do waste. It's a human invention.
Have fun with your chemistry!
Cheers 🍻

Today I want to talk about literally the only thing that actually matters.
This video is going to SUUUUCK...
I have a really hard time making a video on this, because I'm a forever optimist. I also really want to avoid existential nihilism. We can only save humanity if we act. Giving up because things look bleak is how humanity fails. It's for this reason I've gone 3 years without making this video, but it's also why I've made this past series. Laying the groundwork until this moment.
I wanted to end this video on the pathways to decarbonization work that has been done by the IESO, and many other country's around the world. Similar reports are being done, on HOW humanity transitions to a future economy.
The problem is, they all have one fundamental flaw in them. They want to sustain our current society. I.e. ... They ignore overshoot.
The story begins in 1980 with probably the most important book ever written on this topic, and that is "overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change" by William R. Catton Jr. Actually, that's not entirely true. The story REALLY begins with the invent of one single tool: The plough.
Why?
We'll talk about this in the video. It is because the plough represents humanity's fork in the road. We had sustainable human societies on one path, and on the other side, we have what we created.
Why does Canadian Permaculture Legacy exist?
My youtube channel exists to teach you how to garden. What I've not been clear on is why. I've kind of lied to you all. The reason for this isn't deceit, it's because the reason is too big. CPL exists because gardening is no less than step one of saving the human race. Yes step 1. Of about a thousands steps, but it's step 1.
Saving the human race? That's a bit grandiose, isn't it?
It is what it is.
This isn't a gardening channel. Sure, technically it is, but that's not why it exists. You may be asking yourself, why am I showing you the man behind the curtain (wizard of oz)? Why am I telling you these things? Why am I even spending all my free time, working for $1 an hour on videos about gardening?
When I got into permaculture, I devoured everything I could on the topic. I read a hundred books. I read every article I could. I became consumed by it. Not only permaculture, but WHY we needed it. I got consumed by the works of people like Mr Catton. Richard Heinberg. Jean-Baptiste Fourier, John Tyndall, Wallace Broeker, Thomas Chrowder Chamberlain, Gilbert Plass, William Ophuls. But not just Western "white" writers, also indigenous writing such as Daniel Wildcat, and Robin Wall Kimmerer. The more I learned about the environment, about humanity, about our trajectory and problems, the more I realized I needed to do something about it. So I started teaching people how to garden. We'll get to why, later. First we need to get to the point here.
This channel teaches gardening, but that's not why it exists. It exists because the real purpose of this channel is trying to save humanity. So what is this video about?
It is about the only one thing that matters.

Just chatting session - Electric Vehicles Part 1 - General information, and info on my Tesla Model 3
Offset your carbon footprint on Wren: https://www.wren.co/start/cpl. The first 100 to sign up will get their first month of the subscription covered by Wren for free!
Many people wanted more free flowing just chatting content. Just a warning - some of you will HATE this format, and I fully understand. It's going to take me a while to get to points. I'm going to ramble and go on tangents. Some people have said they LOVE those videos, so this one is for them. If it bugs you too much, stay tuned for the next one, where we laser focus on the economics and data in part 2. For what it's worth, the sit down chat was 2.5 hours long. I edited out a lot of it in the end, because I felt that was just WAAAAY too long. I have a lot to say on this topic though (and all the other tangents I went on, like Magnetic Flux, Eddy currents in stator cores, hysterisis losses, etc.
Today, in part 1, I decided to do a chat on Electric Vehicles, because I now have 5 years of data driving my Tesla. That, plus being an engineer, plus being a permaculturist, means that I may have a unique take on EVs that many "Tesla youtubers" maybe wouldn't have. This should also be used hand in hand with the "misinformation in renewables" video just released, as it provides the data basis for many of my opinions on the sustainability side of things.
Lets get into all that, plus a tiiiiny bit of a carbon rant at the end. It's unfortunate that 2% of the people make so much noise, but now that literally every single oil company has accepted that climate change is a human made problem, and that they are the core of it (even though these campaigns are more advertising than action on their part), I don't think there's much excuse for anyone else still denying it. That, plus recent news of severe Greenland melting, the fact that it's 15 degrees in Toronto this week, and record temps set just about everywhere this year, I think we can start getting harder on people who still haven't gotten the memo yet. So I'm going to get into some engineering and climate science aspects of carbon, water melting, and some really nasty things call ... you know... feedback loops.
So if you want some general info on how my EV has performed in Canada, you want to hear some Musk/Carbon ranting, and maybe just want to learn more about me and my family, then this is the video for you. If that's not for you, well, we'll still have more epic food forest stuff in the spring, when this nature sanctuary food production system starts waking up!
One last thing, I know I said in a community post that we'd do the collapse video next. I've drafted it a few times, and redone it a few times. It's way too negative. And I think that's kind of the point. However, I want to provide hope, so I'm still working on more fine tuning of that video so that I don't cause too much existential dread and panic. It's important to wake up, but it's also important to act. So the next video will be the detailed economics of my EV, using my REAL information on how much we've saved, what the ROI is on it, and all the nitty gritty financial implications of the EV.
For today, lets just freeform chat a bit.

Fighting Against Misinformation in the Renewable Energy Sector
Sometimes we think in isolation. We do this the most with our energy options.
Wind kills birds.
Hydro kills fish.
Coal pollutes the air and water.
Natural gas emits methane.
Solar has waste and cobalt/lithium mining issues.
Nuclear waste is scary and it takes a long time to build a new plant.
These lines of thinking all lead to one conclusion - we shouldn't have any electricity. This is called the Utopian Fallacy. If a solution isn't perfect, we shouldn't do it. I find permaculturists especially get a real kick out of feeling morally superior for hating on the above, using that rationale, but remain in la-la-land without any real world solutions.
If there was a perfect solution, this wouldn't even be a topic. Unfortunately for us, we live in the real world, and we need to design power systems. When power goes out, people die. It's that simple.
A temporary power outage, if sustained, can kill hundreds or thousands of people within a few days. What happens when entire society sees long term and possibly permanent energy crisis'?
What happens when countries all around the world figure out, collectively at the same time, that to phase out coal oil and gas, they need 3 to 10 times the power generation (i.e. removing coal = electrifying transportation = TONS more power needed). What happens when all countries try to hire the same labour force, try to engage the same vendors, to build the same products? "Sure, we can meet that order, you are country 79 on the list, and we should have your order completed in roughly 40 years". There is going to be a RACE for renewables. It will be the war of the future. Who gets the vendors to build them the power they need.
So lets flatten that out, and get started now.
That requires dispelling myths and misinformation.
A large part of the solution is absolutely going to be to try to reduce consumption in all ways possible. However, our current energy situation on planet earth is that 84% of our energy comes from Fossil Fuels (https://ourworldindata.org/energy-mix).
To replace fossil fuels isn't a question of IF. It's a question of WHEN. They are non renewables. They emit carbon (and don't forget OTHER waste also). We are sitting at 420ppm CO2 right now. You may think that CO2 isn't bad. That plants grow faster. So what is okay then? 840ppm? 1680ppm? 16800ppm? The reality is that it's going up 2.5 to 3ppm every year, accelerating, AND THAT MEANS THAT TREES ARE NOT CAPABLE OF REMOVING WHAT WE ARE PUTTING OUT, or it would be going down. And at SOME POINT, if it keeps going up, we won't be able to breathe. It's already making us sick (see in video). So to say it's not a problem, is delusion.
We HAVE to get off them, because they are, by very definition, a non-renewable resource.
For the economists out there - ask yourself what happens to the global economy if 84% of the energy running it disappears. Even if you think CO2 emissions don't matter, we still have to replace fossil fuels before we run out, even just to save the economy and prevent the collapse of civilization as we know it.
Permaculture isn't THE solution. But it can be part of the solution. Why? We could stop injustice in the world, transition all farms to permaculture farms, and pat ourselves on our backs, but once coal, oil and gas run out, society would utterly collapse and not in a good way. Death, starvation, riots.
When people starve, they destroy the environment to feed their families.
Renewable energy is the soft landing pad that will help us pull the economy into the realm of sustainability. Then, regenerative practices like permaculture can restore our earth. This isn't the "new world order". This isn't "the grand design". This isn't "the great reset".
This is just humans reacting to inevitability.
So why is there such a big misinformation campaign to prevent building the very Noah's ark that we KNOW we need? In one word: Greed. In another: Corruption. But lets debunk some of their BS, shall we?
Or more succinctly, in 3 words: Fk Rupert Murdoch.

The Carbon Tax: Capitalism, and discussing what happens when the "free market" is not regulated
Additional info:
In 1940, 33.9% of workforce unionized - mostly in the private sector with only 4% of the public sector being unionized, in 2022 just 11.3% is unionized - 36% in the public sector and only 6% in private. Compare that with Iceland 92%. In fact, when America was in it's glory days in the 1940s to 1980s, it had some of the most "socialist" policies it has ever had. Socialism in quotes there, because that's not socialism, but rather social democratic policies. I explain the difference in the video also.
For tax years 1944 through 1951, the highest marginal tax rate for individuals was 91%. These are the same glory days that many right wing voters want to return the US to. It is 37% now. I.e. the rich - at least the rich who actually pay taxes - pay a cap of 37% now. And compare that with the wealth inequality chart from the previous video. Lets not even get started on capital gains tax changes...Since Reaganomics hit, the capitalists have pulled back worker freedoms and increased inequality, with the people being oppressed the most cheering them on.
Now, for my whole life I've labelled myself as a small government fiscal conservative. However, I've seen what lack of regulation does to the "free market". The main problem in capitalism is that negative social/environmental impacts are not priced into a companies bottom line. Beneficial social/environmental policies of the company are ALSO not priced in.
This means that the impact on the planet is ignored in the choices a company makes. If we want companies to make the correct choices, we must incentivize people in ways that you want them to behave.
The Carbon tax attempts to provide a penalty to companies that damage the environment, but in my opinion is too singularly focused on carbon in the air. However, it's a good step in the right direction. Of course, the problem always is that then politicians get in the way. I asked myself, where does this money then go? So I decided to actually find out. I had in my mind that the government wastes this money. But then I thought... Where did I get this opinion from if I've never actually dug into this in depth myself?
It turns out, it was propaganda, and I've been brainwashed. In Canada, more than 90% of the carbon tax is directly paid back to families. Where does the other 10% go? I discuss that also. Yes, that means that more than 80% of families will actually MAKE money from the carbon tax. The ones who don't are the heaviest consumers, which almost exclusively lines up with the richest households. In my opinion, if a family is financially set, and STILL chooses to spend money in ways that hurt the environment -buying everything from Amazon for example - then they deserve to subsidize the families who are not doing that. Again, that's only my opinion. So actually, I found out that not only am I okay with a carbon tax, I would prefer it was larger. Yes, me, a historic financial conservative, supports a LARGER tax. Crazy.
This picture that most Canadian's get back more than they spend is certainly not what certain corporations, and the politicians who they lobby are trying to make you believe. For example, here: https://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/election-2019/conservative-leader-andrew-scheer-holds-rally-in-calgary-skyview where Andrew Scheer tells people who the carbon tax is benefiting, that they will remove the tax as a first order of getting elected - and the people cheer. Unfortunately nobody does any research and digging anymore, which makes everyone extremely susceptible to political spin.
This is not saying a carbon tax is always a good idea. It all depends on the details. How is it funded? Where does it go? But please, do your own research and don't let corporations/politicians tell you what your opinion is.
This video hopes to get into details on what the Carbon tax works in Canada.
I am including Carbon tax in a video about political systems, to help elucidate how, when regulations are lifted, capitalism always trends towards the gross inequality we see today. Regulations like the Carbon tax are important to avoid the pitfalls of capitalism from happening - Capitalists only looking at the bottom line.
I also include a discussion of the difference between social programs (social democracy) and socialism, for completeness, as the term "socialism" is used incorrectly and as propaganda these days.

Late Stage Capitalism (corporatocracy) can only lead here
I know anytime someone posts a video where so much depth is covered... so many topics, that there's just simply no possible way someone agrees with everything being said. The way people are these days, we can hear 99% of what we like, but if we don't like 1%, we throw it all in the garbage and walk away with our hands over our ears. I do hope that people understand that we're all different people, and that there isn't anybody on this planet that you will agree about everything with. That's a pretty important thing too. The world would be boring otherwise, and we'd never challenge our current beliefs and evolve them and we would never grow as people.
So what is this video about?
There are a few examples in our collective human history of where complete oppression leads society. There has never however been one of these cases that also aligned with the complete collapse of our natural environment. We must all collectively understand lessons from the past, so that we can see where it's taking us. This lets us plan. Not only how to best survive this future, but on how we can fight back.

Glyphosate (Round up) in your soils? My concern with glyphosate, and things you can do.
One thing I wish I was more clear about in this video is what this video is and what it isn't. This video absolutely is not a defense of glyphosate, and I hope nobody takes it that way. I structured it in this way because I want to ensure that I'm being as responsible and open minded as possible.
My main point I want to make in this video is that even IF glyphosate isn't as bad as permies often make it out to be, that it's STILL awful for the environment in the way that humans are using it. I also mention GMOs in here, because I really feel like the problems with both of these things are completely intertwined.

Growing in contaminated soils - discussion and science
Today we have a discussion on contaminated soils and is it safe to grow in them? What things can we think about and how can we design our land when we take into account the possibility that an area may not be ideal for growing food?
I have been reading about this topic for years, and it's impossible to link all the articles and studies that I've read on the topic. There are many influential researchers in this area, but among my favorites I've found are Dr John Todd (www.toddecological.com/about), Dr. Paul Stamets (www.fungi.com), and Dr Ganga Hettiarachchi.
The KC study mentioned in the video is behind a paywall, but this site here is an article about the study that is a good read: https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/jun15/soilstudy61115.html. She has a bunch of interesting research you can find here: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Ganga-Hettiarachchi
The tables in the video are from SUPER HELPFUL paper from the Environmental Protection Agency:
https://clu-in.org/download/remed/epa-542-r-07-013.pdf
There is also an EPA fact sheet that is a little easier to digest, but has less discrete information:
https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2014-03/documents/urban_gardening_fina_fact_sheet.pdf
Soil pH chart is from Emporium Hydroponics.

NUTS! My recommended nut trees for a cold hardy permaculture food forest
Nut trees I'm growing:
- Hazelnuts
- Filberts
- Hazelberts
- Walnut (black, Carpathian)
- Butternut
- Buartnut
- Hickory
- Cold hardy almond
- Cold hardy pecan (may have died this winter)
- Heartnut
- Oak (acorn)
- Chestnut (various, mostly seedlings, Eng/Eu mix to try to restore them - likely to expand this in the future, especially in wilder areas)
Am I forgetting some? Possibly...
Which are my favorites?
It may change over the years, because right now only some of those are producing, but already I have some advice to give on what you SHOULD be growing, and what you may want to grow more selectively.
This is likely my last video before Christmas. Whatever your religion, holiday that you celebrate, I hope you are having a wonderful time with friends and family, and are being safe and secure.
Have a great end to 2022, and a wonderful start to 2023. Start planning that food forest, or where you are going to expand it!
NEVER STOP PLANTING!

Why nuclear is key to sustainability and permaculture

Osama's Video, go subscribe to him for more nuclear videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxOvcnRbnno
Important disclaimer - The opinions in this video are mine and may not necessarily represent those of my employer, or other nuclear professionals.
I also fully acknowledge my personal bias on the topic of nuclear, being that I work in the industry. However, I work in the industry BECAUSE I believe in it's critical importance in our current and future energy mix.
Now I know there's going to be questions on nuclear waste, nuclear safety, other technologies like thorium reactors, MSRs, SMRs, difference between Candu BWR and PWR, concerns about Chernobyl and Fukushima, and so much more. These topics are all things I'd like to touch on in future videos, but there's just no room in this one.
I hope you enjoy this, and I hope that those of you who skeptical (it's GOOD to be skeptical, especially here) can at least get another perspective. If that doesn't change your mind, that's also good, it's REALLY REALLY SUPER IMPORTANT to be extremely skeptical and inquisitive about something as serious as nuclear power.
All the best everyone,
Keith.
Errata in Osama's video: When he discusses California power mix, it's important to note that California actually has 2 nuclear units at Diablo Canyon which are 1100MWe Pressurized Water reactors and produce roughly 18,000GW·h annually. I also believe there was a typo when he said wind makes up 15% but the graphic said 50%; the correct value is 15%. Now, his points are still correct, because although California has 2 reactors, compare that to it's population and economy, and then consider that Southern Ontario has 6 units at Pickering, 4 at Darlington and 8 at Bruce for a much smaller population.

Chickenmath - The economics of Backyard chickens in 3 different setups.
We did a trial of 3 different feed systems.
1) 100% store bought feed.
2) 50% store bought feed, 50% food forest harvest
3) 90%+ food forest harvest.
How did each do in terms of eggs produced, cost of eggs, etc? What is the average cost of backyard eggs?
Then we also take a look at some long term chicken strategies. Raising chicks vs buying laying hens. How long to keep the chickens. Overwinter them? Lights in the winter? We talk about the economics of each, and also the ethical implications of each.
Looking to start backyard chickens and wondering if it's economical? This is the video for you.

What to do with a Woodchip garden in the fall
So many questions get asked about this topic. What do I do with a woodchip garden? How do I add manure or compost? Put on top? Pull woodchips back? What about leaves?
