PAUL MASON 3’ | Randomized, Control Trials: Control for confounding variables…GOLD STANDARD
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1209 | Dr Paul Mason
LowCarbDownUnder podcast
Whenever see 'link' or 'associated' then the study is
observational and CANNOT show causation
-survey research is highly suspect due to
-healthy user bias [trying to give surveyor what she wants]
-or poor memory over long period
Example:
pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers put into
'red meat' category— INVALID
Hamburger eaters likely also eating
sides of fries & coke—confounding!
Example: Hawaiian pizza: meat, veggie,
fruit, or??
Healthy user bias: non-meat eaters more likely to engage in
healthy non-diet behaviors...exercise, eat organic, sleep 8 hours
Randomized Control Trials [RCT] CAN CONTROL for effects
of confounders…
-subjects RANDOMLY assigned to 2 groups
-confounding variables are EVENLY DISTRIBUTED
-do not affect results
RCT is the GOLD STANDARD approach to health studies
-CAN show CAUSATION
BEST of BEST: Systematic Reviews [meta studies]
-when done with strict selection criteria
-can be comprehensive & valid
Studies must NOT use poor OUTCOME MEASURES…
[often done in vegan research]
-surrogate markers are often used [NOT VALID]
-best outcome measure? MORTALITY
COUNTER-EXAMPLE: LDL level
-assumed to be marker associated with dying
-Research shows this DOES NOT EXIST
Major BMJ meta-study of 68k people:
-higher LDL = less chance of DYING
"Use of LDL are health marker is
INDEFENSIBLE”

LowCarbDownUnder podcast
"Well-balanced" vegan diet...means: NEEDS SUPPLEMENTING
-foods have B12 added
-take B12 supplement tablets
"Even though: well known that B12 supplementation is needed
-many, many vegetarians & vegans ARE DEFICIENT”
-62% of pregnant females
-86% children
90% elderly
B12 is essential.
-required as a cofactor in DNA synthesis,
and in both fatty acid and amino acid metabolism.
"If vegan & vegetarians fail to supplement a nutrient, which
is known to be ESSENTIAL [body cannot produce it]
-which is cheap and easy to get…
What does that mean for other difficult to get nutrients?
Grass fed steak contains D, B12, K2, A , EPA, DHA,
creatine, carnosine, carnitine, choline, heme iron,
taurine, zinc
ALL ARE ABSENT or
DEFICIENT on plant-
based diet
How can a vegan diet possibly be the healthiest diet for
humankind, when, WITHOUT ARTIFICIAL SUPPLEMENTATION
it will eventually KILL YOU?
Confused??
Vegan advocates cite piles of SEEMINGLY VALID science
"They rely on poor quality science”
Research hierarchy
Bottom: lowest level: case studies
Next: weak: observational [epidemiological]
Next: strong: non-randomized, control trials
Best: randomized control trials
Limitations of Observational studies:
-observe populations
-relationships bet. observations
Example: rate of cancer vs # of bananas eaten
Observing 2 things that relate to eat other
Does NOT confirm CAUSE
"Observational research cannot PROVE
anything”
-provides only circumstantial evidence
"Any researcher who uses observational
research to prove CAUSATION is
SCIENTIFICALLY INCOMPETENT”

presents episode 1206 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Fruits? variable...lots of fructose, but also fiber & bulk
-difficult to over eat fruit [juice is easy to over drink]
Difficult to over eat potatoes, sweet potatoes for same reason
Consider all aspects: carbs, fiber, taste, boredom…
Example: China used to eat lots of rice & veggies
-previously very poor so food scarce
-then, same food daily did not promote
over eating
2 reasons to over eat: hunger; taste
-without these, simply eat till full, no more
Now, processed foods have chemicals and ingredients that
promote HUNGER--the opposite of satiety
-people eat past fullness due to enjoyment of eating
It is complex
It is definitely not simply calories in, calories out
not a physiological approach AT ALL
Question: should women in menopause get fasting insulin tested?
-problem is that insulin levels go up & down a lot
-time of day does not help
-it is always fasting test, but that varies day to day
So, more helpful is diet, waist circumference, weight

JASON FUNG 10’ | ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS Raise INSULIN; shut down fat burning
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1204 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Drinking artificial sweeteners gives a sweetness signal
that sometimes raises insulin…
-newer ones don't do it so much
-signal tells body, "we are going to eat”
-insulin rises and stops burning calories…
-prepares to begin fat storage
-so, whatever you eat, body won't burn
-you will be hungry
Ever heard: 'I switched to diet Coke, lost 25#’
Never
You could hear: I used to drink 12 diet Cokes
a day. Stopped, and lost 25#
Eat 100 cal of cookies or 100 cal of eggs…
-Immediately, the HORMONAL RESPONSE to these is
COMPLETELY, UTTERLY DIFFERENT
Cookies: spike INSULIN so body STORES THAT AS BODY FAT
-No energy for rest of body---so, still HUNGRY for MORE
Eggs: insulin DOES NOT GO UP
-ENERGY for rest of body [NO FAT STORAGE]
-you feel FULL, NOT HUNGRY
-body uses that very energy; no fat storage
EITHER BURN or STORE
Not # of calories, but type of calories
"I never asked, is a calorie a calorie???
-I asked ARE CALORIES EQUALLY FATTENING?? NO

JASON FUNG 9’ | Key to fat LOSS? Turn INSULIN DOWN: low carb; fasting
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1203 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Studies: you don't continue to burn 2000 cal/day!
What happens is: You eat only 1500 cal/day
Your body burns 1400 cal/day...then you start to GAIN WEIGHT
"You do lose weight for 6 months. THEN body adapts…
Your metabolic rate drops to 1400; gain weight back +”
'You must be cheating!!’ NO
-your energy expenditure is so low, you gain
HAVE NOT CREATED CONDITIONS TO USE
YOUR BODY FAT
-so: you have 2000 cal IN and 2000 cal OUT...stores body fat
Like: to store 3/day, eat food & store some in fridge
Then: don't go & eat; but fridge is LOCKED
-if insulin is HIGH, the fridge is locked!
When eating low fat; high carb foods
-you KEEP INSULIN HIGH
body fat [locked] not accessible
calories in [reduced to 1500]
calories out [must reduce to 1500 to balance]
=cold; tired; hungry; GAINING WEIGHT
Real solution?
UNLOCK your own calories stored in your own body fat…
-so you can continue to eat 2000, and the body fat does go!
=must GET INSULIN LEVELS DOWN
Question: what is keeping insulin high??
the CORRUPT idea that:
'eat super low cal; super low fat; 6 times/day’
was EXACTLY WRONG
Must Get Energy From Your Own Body Fat
Difference between intermitent fasting and calorie deficit??
Both can create calorie deficit, BUT
you must create right hormonal balance [low insulin]
-if eat 1500 calories within 6 hours;
-rest of day INSULIN is down
-body gets signal: burn body fat baby
THAT GIVES YOU THE 500 CALORIES!!
If you eat 1500 calories throughout day
BODY GETS NO SIGNAL TO BURN FAT
-you WILL GET HUNGRY!!!!!
-metabolic rate will DROP!!!!!

JASON FUNG 8’ | CALORIE DEFICIT?? Circular logic—IT NEVER WORKS
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1202 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Women have higher spikes in ghrelin when fasting...
-but it also comes down more deeply than in men over time
-women may fast better during this time when
-ghrelin is such an issue
Look one step deeper than calories: Why are you eating those?
-you are hungry--YOU CANNOT CHOOSE TO LOSE HUNGER
Why calories OUT?
-it is NOT EXERCISE; it is METABOLIC RATE
[heart; lungs; kidneys]
IT IS NOT WILL POWER
CANNOT CHOOSE HUNGER LEVEL
CANNOT CHOOSE METABOLIC RATE
"Must influence the HORMONES that influence your body"
Most of academic medicine is harmful to the core...
-they believe and preach obesity is your fault. Period.
That is NOT TRUE.
-your hormones are all messed up
-let's fix the hormones
-not assign guilt
"I get hundreds of comments from women who are being
told--just eat less & exercise more
or, don't come back until you lose this much weight"
-it is body shaming
Dr Fung
"Those people saying that actually believe it"
Calorie deficit is CIRCULAR LOGIC
'e a t l e s s than you burn...'
Question: How do you know??
'y o u. a r e gaining weight...'
That Is Circular Logic!
How to know how much you should eat?
-we are all different
It goes in a circle...that is not a solution...
'you are gaining weight because eating too much;
we know you are eating too much because gaining weight'
There is never a calorie deficit, because it is a balanced equation
If you say: [Body Fat = cal in - cal out]
3 variables
1-reduce calories IN
--that COULD reduce body fat OR
--could reduce calories OUT
Example: reduce calories in from 2000 to 1500 a day
'this will certainly work to lose body fat'
BUT--it almost NEVER WORKS
in every single study: you don't continue to burn 2000 cal/day!
What happens is:
You eat 1500 cal/day
Your body burns 1500 cal/day
Your body fat stays same

JASON FUNG 7’ | It’s CALORIES?? Then why: puberty; menopause FAT UP??
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1201 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Myths around women and fasting...
-no reason women should not fast
-men & women have same digestion & metabolic systems
There are differences in weight loss and behaviors
-men often lose weight more quickly
but hormonally: insulin & ghrelin work pretty much the same
"Most of our program is women fasting"
Estrogens & progesterone not really affected
by fasting
So affect weight management a lot
Example: before puberty, boys & girls very similar in
-weight and body fat
After puberty: boys, due to testosterone, gain muscle
-girls, due to estrogen, gain body fat
-gain 50% more body fat
"Why would people think it is all about
CALORIES & WILL POWER???"
-body only responds to hormones
Same idea at menopause...
-due to estrogen & progesterone, many have weight issues
Studies show perimenopause is worst one
-highest amount of ghrelin in this period
Focus on calories is detrimental
-trainers imply it is all about will power
"Look at puberty, or at injecting insulin...
doesn't matter how much will power!"
-When ghrelin is high, you will be HUNGRY
-like your doctor, the gurus love to blame
the victim--YOU

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1200 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
Recommend changing up fast method occasionally...
-establish pattern first to make it easier to start
Example: cutting out snacks and breakfast
-body is accustomed and hunger goes away
If hit plateau, then change it up
-go longer; go stricter
Similar to exercise where, when progress
is stalled, you make changes
Should you do a day without fasting?
-depends on goal
Example: if in poor health, stick with the fasting plan
but, if doing well, and want a cheat day, go ahead
Problem: often, on holiday, make it a cheat day,
but, then don't make up for it...so progress lags
-need to have equal period of eating less
to make up for the overeating

https://youtu.be/T7o_hF1XB84?si=imXrUOguZeRxe_e9
5 stages of fasting
-burn glucose
-gluconeogenesis [burn protein -not muscle]
-helps autophagy [24 - 36 hours]
-fat burning [longer]
-protein SPARING fasting
Implement into regular day...
-multi-day fasts not easy to fit into daily schedule
-dinner with family, socializing very important
-fit fasting into lifestyle
Example 16x8 fast; eat from 11am to 7pm
-fits working schedule
-allows eating at work, with family & friends

JASON FUNG 4’ | FASTING: make it a habit…then NO WILLPOWER NEEDED
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1198 | Dr Jason Fung
Morphus podcast
You will get hungry during a fast...
-for most, during fast, when time to eat, hunger goes up, but
-soon goes back down
Example: fast, at noon, hunger goes up
dinner time: ghrelin does not go up...body took energy from
body fat
"Body essentially has fed itself on body fat"
-you are no longer hungry
-if you can ignore wave of hunger for 90 min.
-it will pass
-hunger is also due to habit
Simply train yourself to eat less often...
Example: I skipped breakfast for many years
-now I am no longer hungry in mornings
-New habits will help you fast on a regular basis
-at this point, no will power is needed. It is natural.
Compared to dieting, where constantly have to decide
-what to eat
-how much
A lot of the myths turn out to be false
-most are the OPPOSITE of what happens
When I started to research this ten years ago...
-science was already there, but perceptions were wrong
-so, I just had to get the knowledge out there for people to see
Nothing is stopping us from doing this

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1187 | Dr Nadir Ali
Eat More Fat podcast
Gluten affects zonulin protein...
-gluten breaks down into gliadin
-gliadin interacts [binds] with receptor on cell surface
-makes zonulin [cell membrane still tightly bound, no gaps]
-ZONULIN loosens junctions
-CREATES GAP
-foreign proteins & bacteria
enter gut lining
-INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
-capable of both helping us
and HARMING US
When zonulin is activated by eating gluten, some of us can get
-celiac disease; type 1 diabetes; IBS
-coronary artery disease; chronic inflammation
Plants are defenseless...right? wrong
-create antinutrients; chemical warfare; toxins; lectins
Example: group of young kids ate uncooked red kidney beans...
-became sick, hospitalized, recovered
-lectins bound to protein
on gut lining; rapidly
created abdominal pain
Lectin mechanism: binds to proteins, causes
red blood cells to clump together [agglutination]
Study: rats, fed lectins at .5% of diet, died in 2 weeks
From Dr Mercola: lectins are present in these plants
-nightshades
-tomatoes
-peppers

NADIR ALI 8‘ | Leaky gut: antibodies -cause T2Diabetes -multiple sclerosis

Eat More Fat podcast
Gut bacteria are not symbionts [there to help us], they are
pathobionts. Necessary to promote HOST DEFENSE in our
gut lining by: activating your
-lymphocytes; antibodies; white blood cells
But, if go too far, turn on own body by autoimmunity action
Interaction bet. enteric microbiota & mucosal immune system
-constant, dynamic, intimate interaction among these players
and our gut lining--not a passive coexistence!
Mucosal immune system
-adaptive, renewing, repairing...
Microbiome is needed
-to maintain epithelial
barriers&
-mature defenses
The mucosal immune system consists of
-cellular component
-humoral immunity
-defense mechanisms
that prevent the invasion of microorganisms
These defense mechanisms can be
-physical barriers [epithelial lining, mucus, cilia function]
-chemical factors [pH, antimicrobial peptides]
Gut lining & bacteria [microbiome] should protect us by making
us ready for pathogens...
Disrupted by our actions: eat lots of probiotics; and
-plants; polyphenols; tannins; lectins; fiber..
This causes break in membrane integrity then bacteria
infiltrates into gaps in wall...
-creates inflamed response
Example: leaky gut:
-gap allows bacteria in
-response is inflammation
-antibodies created to kill
If ANTIBODIES IN EXCESS
or, If NO BACTERIA
-can kill pancreas; give T2D
-damage nerves;
-cause multiple sclerosis

Dr Kraft: tested 15k people with NORMAL BLOOD SUGAR...
75% of them were INSULIN RESISTANT!
-your doctor will likely NOT DO THE RIGHT TEST--insulin level
If checked, insulin levels too high, in order to keep glucose low
-IR=many, many chronic diseases
Eating carbs in excess can
increase insulin
-blocks leptin signal to brain
[leptin tells brain stop eating]
Health of fat cells determines how healthy you are...
-healthy fat cell is empty enough to accommodate fat storage
-if continual high carb eating, sending fat to fat cells
-when they cannot accept any more: they are 'dead'
-get inflamed,
-fat deposition into blood
vessels, heart, liver
Stomach acid & pepsins & muscular contractions digest protein...
-if not, malabsorption of B12 & protein can occur
-if no stomach acid--bacteria will grow
-go up into lungs, cause pneumonia
-grow in small intestines
causing SIBO
[small intestine
bacteria overgrowth]
As you age, stomach acid goes down...
-cooking food important
-eating raw vegetables--be careful

NADIR ALI 6‘ | STUDY: FIBER NOT NEEDED to support colon bacteria
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1184 | Dr Nadir Ali
Eat More Fat podcast
Fiber is fermented in the colon by bacteria...
-converts into short chain fatty acids [SCFA]
-SCFA feed colon lining
Some say: if don't eat fiber, won't make butyrate [SCFA]
'this will destroy lining of gut'
Returning to study of Low Carb vs High Carb...
Low carb: butyrate dropped 18 to 14; Total SCFA 102 to 86
High carb: no change
Bacteria: Low Carb dropped 8 to 6; High carb: no change
Problem eating too much protein?
-remember: stomach acid important to break down protein
-If this is issue for you [old, taking PPIs, have reflux problems]
-should cook protein well; don't let whole proteins into colon
-bacteria ferment it; create cytotoxins & carcinogens
-ammonia
-BCFAs
-phenols
"Careful of rare
meats when
older!"
Study results: BOTH GROUPS: NO CHANGE IN BCFAs!
-no increase in URINE PHENOL or P-CREOSOL
"No increase in deleterious protein fermentation products"
-energy intake was restricted--may have enhanced functionality
of small intestine
to handle proteins
Dr Ali: "Due to high
protein in diet, they
did not over eat as
usual!"

NADIR ALI 4‘ | HUMAN DIGESTION: Fiber BLOCKS protein, B12, mineral absorption
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1182 | Dr Nadir Ali
Eat More Fat podcast
Expensive tissue hypothesis...
-large brain that must get priority energy and lots of it
-small intestine [digests 60% of food];
ideal for macro & micro-nutrient DENSE foods
Many think that fiber is VERY GOOD--it is not!
Where do we metabolize fiber? ONLY PLACE IS COLON!
-it is rudimentary
-15% of our digestion
-limited fermenting capacity
FERMENT & MAKE B12
in colon;
but can't absorb it there!
Acid-based digestion...
Food we eat NOT BROKEN DOWN BY BACTERIA
Broken down by stomach acid with pepsin
To absorb protein, B12, minerals NEED STOMACH ACID
-if eat lots of fiber with
protein: will NOT absorb
-protein nor minerals
We have small, weak pancreas...Role of pancreas: release insulin:
Insulin required to process carbs [& keep blood sugars in check]
"We are bestowed with pancreas that cannot handle large
glycemic load --if overloaded with sugar, will simply die"
FAILURE TO MAKE INSULIN
Many do not support expensive tissue hypothesis...
Dr Ali, "I have read the papers and I do not agree"
The hypothesis is absolutely right
Fermentation: either in foregut [ruminants] or
hind gut [horses & primates]
Or: acid-based auto enzyme digestion, breaking down food:
-stomach acid; enzymes [pepsin; amylase; lipase]

Low Carb Lifestyle Hub podcast
As husband & father, highest priority is to be able to provide
for & protect family...
-work hard to provide well for family
-be physically capable of protecting family in all circumstances
Considering the day would be grandfather...in decade or so
-the kind of grandpa I want to be...
"My health matters more than just to
my own interests--playing sports, but
for family & community.
Steps I can take to help, I want to do"
Question: How have your thoughts on health changed?
-have benefited from being biomedical scientist...
-able to rely on cold, hard data
For years, I thought, like most that key of health was:
-be calorically balanced--watch calories & how much expending
-as well as, avoid saturated fat
Change:
-NOW: no one should count calories
[how much we eat matters, but it is
taken care of if we are mindful of
our macronutrients]
For men: well-done studies have tracked testosterone levels
& sperm production in men who deliberately adopt low fat diets...
[what we have been told to do for decades]
Results
-lower fat intake: lower testosterone & lower sperm production
"The less fat a man eats, the less
manly he becomes, unfortunately"

MIKE MENTZER e | BASIC START Workout A: 2 sets to failure B: 2 sets to failure 7 days rest between
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1167 | Mike Mentzer
Heavy Duty College podcast
From a certain perspective, this program is perfect for
implementation for a portion of the year...
Start: train 1/week; do 2 different basic workouts [A & B]
Week 1: do workout A; week 2: do workout B
7 days rest between A & B
Workout A [deliberate motion..no momentum
1-squat, on machine [or sub leg press]
to failure [8-15 reps]
brief rest [~1min]
2-close grip, palms up pull down
to clavicle, strict control, 3 sec pause
That is workout A
After 1 week rest: Workout B...
1-regular [not stiff leg] dead lift [can use trap bar]
5-8 reps to failure
brief rest
2-set of dips 6-10 reps to failure
"Don't gauge progress based on
'pump' or soreness"
YOU WON'T KNOW IF SUCCESS UNTIL
NEXT TIME YOU DO SAME WORKOUT
"If you are stronger on that exercise,
then you have achieved progress"
Keep journal: date; body weight at start
-exercise; weight; accurately record # of reps

MIKE MENTZER d | Resistance training 2 PRINCIPLES—Both 100% EQUAL—1-workout itself 2-recovery period
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1166 | Mike Mentzer
Heavy Duty College podcast
"Majority of bodybuilders today seem to operate by seeing...
-how many sets they can do or how much they can take"
-but: bodybuilding is NOT AEROBIC; not endurance contest
Purpose of bodybuilding:
-into gym
-logically, methodically do what
is required to trigger body's growth
mechanism...no more than that
"Then, get the hell out of the gym
get some rest; grow"
Big picture of bodybuilding: 2 equal elements...
NEITHER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE OTHER
1-the workout itself
2-rest period between workouts
Workout does not produce
muscular growth; IT IS A STIMULUS
-stimulates body's growth mechanism
into motion
-the BODY produces growth...but only
if left alone to do so
[don't rest; don't grow]
How much time for rest between workouts?
-immediately following a workout, you are exhausted
-you feel fully fatigued &
-considerable resources were used to fuel the workout
-feel like in a hole; a deficit
First thing body must do following
workout is NOT BUILD MOUNTAIN
but begin filling the hole [recovery]
Recovery Process could take 5 days
before body can build mountain
-if you train again before recovery
complete: will short circuit process
Proof: every experienced bodybuilder has had experience of...
-say, heavy leg workout on Fri afternoon
-breaks personal records & reps are up
-rests all weekend, thinking
will wake up Monday all refreshed...
But, Monday wakes up sytemically
fatigued
Confusing because exercise not only
fatigues focused muscle group, but
also has systemic effect
Rest enough for local recovery &
systemic recovery...can take weeks

Low Carb Down Under podcast
Safely reduce insulin for T2D:
-is your blood sugar controlled? A1C?
-if very well controlled, may be concerned about hypoglycemia
-if badly controlled, can be less anxious
-if on short-acting insulin: since now on keto, just stop it
-on long-acting insulin [once daily], just cut in half
-mixed insulin is more complex
-if poorly controlled blood sugars,
just half the mixed insulin
-if well controlled, switch to
once-daily long-acting insulin
Patient needs to measure blood sugar before and 2 hours after
each meal--inform the doctor if there is a spike
-aim for 10 mmol/L [180 mg/dL]
-if next day level is below 10; can drop insulin down
-have daily contact with doctor
Case 1: 65 yr male on 20 units long-acting, once daily insulin...
-pretty well controlled blood sugar [3 to 14 mmol/L] after
eating porridge for breakfast; is hypoglycemic in afternoon!
Doctor: let's STOP all insulin; and no more porridge
THAT WAS IT
Case 2: 55 yr male T2D on 140 units long-acting daily insulin...
-on insulin 10 years, more over time
-A1C 6.8%; glucose 5-8
Cut Insulin In Half--next day: OK
so: cut completely...no problem
"that was 2 years ago!"
TG down from 5.4 to 1.1

MIKE MENTZER c | 2 sets is not just linear unit increase…it DOUBLES VOLUME & INROAD RECOVERY
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1164 | Mike Mentzer
Heavy Duty College podcast
Directly from Arthur Jones: once you understand INTENSITY
this is the key to
-understanding exercise science &
-perfect application necessary for real progress
The volume you do in a workout is a NEGATIVE
WHY?
every set performed causes deeper
INROAD to recovery ability
-for every set: more of body's
limited reserve of resources is USED
AT THE ATTEMPT TO RECOVER or:
compensate for exhaustion...no muscle growth
INROAD: like digging hole...1 set = small hole ; 2nd set =. deeper...
-for every set, hole gets deeper & body has to expend or
waster more resources IN RECOVERY to overcome the INROAD
-leaving that much less to build muscle
Question: big difference bet. 1 & 2 sets?
YES--biggest mistake you could make
-from 1 to 2 is not 1 unit linear increase
-it is 100% increase in volume...
DOUBLES INROAD RECOVERY need
Even if second set is better stimulus
-nullified by doubling INROAD recovery
needs
"Greatest cause of lack of progress in muscle growth...
is OVERTRAINING"
-#1 reason bodybuilders fail to achieve their goals
"Since it is never considered in the field of bodybuilding,
I have to state it many times"
Volume training is promoted, while
not revealing that most leaders in
the field have to rely on PEDs"

Dr Penny Figtree: Regarding Type 2 Diabetes...
"Sadly, most general practitioner [GP] doctor education on
diabetes is about
prescribing INSULIN!"
From drug company:
'get prescribing!'
"Do they know that it is NOT GREAT OUTCOME to PUT
EXOGENOUS INSULIN INTO T2D patients"
Increases: mortality & cardiovascular events
More insulin given, more insulin resistant they become
Putting on weight & driving metabolic diseases
Increases SGLT2 receptor [opposite of the inhibitor drug]
Raises blood pressure
"I say, let's give you lowest
amount that keeps your
blood sugar below 10mmol
[180 mg/dL]
How to start DE-PRESCRIBING insulin?
-complicated? government funding???
-NO: just have an omelet for breakfast
"Have cereal & some insulin...or have an omelet and NO insulin"
My patient did this and asked:
'Why was i ever on insulin, if it was
just about what I was eating?'
If you are a GP, before you PRESCRIBE INSULIN...why not
scan food of patient & simply REDUCE THEIR CARBS"
It is easy...and cuts the need for insulin injections
"My approach: reduce carb intake to 30g and can get them off
insulin quickly"
I started with this

Low Carb Diets'
I give that to my

presents episode 1162 | Mike Mentzer
Heavy Duty College podcast
Absolute Failure: shaking, gritting
teeth, barely get bar to top
Which rep required most intensity? LAST REP
Exercising that last almost impossible rep causes body to
-dip into RESERVE ability
-only has small amount of reserve
"Body protects itself against future
reserve assaults by enlarging on
it s existing ability by compensatory
build up of MORE MUSCLE MASS"
Only high intensity training can FORCE body to use its
reserve ability sufficiently to stimulate ADAPTIVE RESPONSE
of muscle mass increase
REPEATING tasks that are well within existing CAPACITY
do NOTHING to stimulate growth
-ending set before failure will do
NOTHING to stimulate ADAPTIVE
RESPONSE of muscle mass increase
Carrying a set to point you are
forced to use 100% momentary
muscular ability: SINGLE MOST
IMPORTANT FACTOR for STRENGTH & SIZE
Working to point of momentary muscular failure
[another rep IMPOSSIBLE despite greatest effort]
-ensures you pass thru BREAK-OVER POINT
[below which growth is NOT stimulated & above which
GROWTH IS STIMULATED]
-detractors of HIT must admit that
last rep of set to failure is more
productive than any other rep...
embracing first principle of HIT
Is it actually necessary to take a set all the way to full failure?
-where 100% effort is required
PROBLEM: how to measure intensity...
"Only 2 ways: 0 intensity [at rest]; or
100% at maximum exertion"
-going too full 100% max exertion
means you have passed every
break over point: therefore
GROWTH WILL BE STIMULATED
Besides working out in a set to 100% exertion, what else needed?
-besides man's physiological characteristic dictates that this
TRAINING STRESS must be carefully regulated
in volume & frequency...is his
STRICTLY LIMITED RECOVERY ABILITY
-we do not possess infinite capacity
to tolerate exhaustive effects
of extreme exertion
This is why Arthur Jones said:
"Only rational to use that which
exists in limited supply as
economical as possible"
The principle of intensity understood as first priority in value
of exercise, the fact of a limited recovery ability...
is next key concept that must be grasped in the
hierarchy of logical approach to exercise
"Knowing that the body has a limited
recovery ability, enables knowing
WHY volume & frequency must
be HYPER-cautiously regulated"
