The Reason Why Southerners Love Putting Salt on Watermelon
There's nothing like biting down on a slice of watermelon when the weather gets hot. Some people prefer it plain, but if you've ever spent a summer in the South, you've probably been offered the salt shaker before digging into the melon.
Essentially if you add something savory to something sweet, it opens up your tastebuds and makes it sweeter. That's why prosciutto wrapped around cantaloupe and feta and watermelon salad is so darn tasty. The sweetness of the melon comes out with a pinch of salt.
Salted watermelon makes a great appetizer or snack. Simply put a bit of salt on a sweet watermelon piece and enjoy how the sea salt brings out the watermelon taste! Whether you use kosher salt, table salt, or Himalayan salt, salting watermelon is a great way to enjoy the summertime fruit. But why stop there? Pout salt on grapefruit, pour balsamic vinegar on cantaloupe or drench your watermelon in lime juice and chili powder. The sky is the limit when it comes to food combinations. And don't get me started on margaritas. That's a whole 'other ball game.

Did you know Taco Bell is noted as being one of the healthiest fast food chains in the nation? Yes, the same chain that is known for its love of Mountain Dew, nacho cheese sauce, Doritos Locos tacos, and the XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito. While there are a few questionable menu items, there are a ton of items that make it easy to "live mas" without feeling guilty about going to the drive-thru. You can make anything on the Taco Bell menu fresco style, which lets customers substitute pico de gallo for guacamole and sour cream.
Want to keep healthy? Avoid these 8 Taco Bell favorites
Quesarito
Packing a whopping 650 calories and 33 grams of fat, this Mexican quesadilla/burrito is anything but healthy. Skip this one if you can and go for a healthier option.

Ambrosia Salad
Categorized as a jello salad, the ambrosia salad is named after the food of Greek Gods, which is said to give longevity or immortality to those who eat it. Created in the South, the first-ever recipe of the fruit salad was recorded in an 1867 cookbook titled, Dixie Cookery: or How I Managed My Table for Twelve Years written by Maria Massey Barringer of Concord, North Carolina. While the recipe is basic (it calls for coconut, sugar, and pulped oranges) it's easy to see where today's recipe came from. By the 1900s, the recipe had gained pineapple and whipped cream and in the 1970s people were adding anything from jello to mayonnaise and sour cream to their salads to bring over to the neighborhood potluck. At this time canned fruit cocktails reigned supreme at every party you attended. Remember Watergate Salad?
Today's recipe follows the classic preparation my grandmother used with canned mandarin oranges, Cool Whip, maraschino cherries, pineapple tidbits, pecans, and mini marshmallows.
Begin by combining the Cool Whip and sour cream in a large bowl and mix until combined. Fold in the marshmallows, shredded coconut, pineapple chunks (or tidbits depending on preference), maraschino cherries, and pecans. Gently fold in the mandarin oranges last to prevent them from breaking.
Cover and refrigerate the Ambrosia fruit salad for at least two hours before serving.

Visit One of the Last Bonanza Steakhouses Before It's Too Late
Do you remember the television show, Bonanza? The television show inspired a variety of merchandise; everything from Jim Beam Whiskey Ponderosa Ranch decanters to a Ponderosa Theme Park in Lake Tahoe, and most notably a chain of Ponderosa and Bonanza Steakhouses founded in 1965.
Back in 1963 Dan Blocker, who played Eric Cartright on Bonanza, opened up the first Bonanza restaurant in Westport, Connecticut. By 1989 the restaurant chain had over 600 restaurants located across the United States, serving up top sirloin and ribeye steaks for hungry customers.
Some of the last Bonanza Steakhouses are located in hidden corners of the Midwest and East Coast, including locations in Presque Isle, Maine, New Columbia, Pennsylvania, Lebanon, Virginia, and St. Cloud, Minnesota. There are also a few of them in Puerto Rico.
Step into one of the still-standing steakhouses and you'll instantly be transported in time. The steakhouse still offers an all-you-can-eat salad bar in a casual dining setting. Saddle up your horse and make your way to Bonanza Steakhouse before it gets put to the pasture for good.

The Difference Between Soul Food and Southern Food
Cornbread, fried chicken, black-eyed peas, yams, macaroni and cheese and collard greens cooked iwht ham hocks are indistinguishable ingredients found in soul food. Food of the Deep South, the term soul food was first introduced in print during the 1960s during the rise of the civil rights marches and Black nationalist movements. But what makes soul food different than Southern food?
African Americans arrived in America as slaves where they were given limited food rations by their masters. Typically rations such as cornmeal, lard, molasses, peas, greens, flour, and some kind of meat, were distributed every Saturday. From these ingredients came classic recipes such as fried chitlins, bbq, cornbread, fried fish, and cooked okra. It was a cooking culture that came to fruition out of necessity and the limits that were put on enslaved African Americans.
Once slavery was abolished, the Great Migration brought soul food and southern cuisine to the North and West. Not all Southern food is soul food, but all soul food is Southern food. In fact, Southern food is the mother of soul food. It's comfort food at its core, with entrees and side dishes inspired by the south and African descent. Home cooking soul food usually means cooking up anything from hush puppies and banana pudding to candied yams and sweet potato pie. Let's not forget the chitterlings and grits!

Whatever Happened to Frito Bandito?
If you watched television in the late 1960s, chances are you were introduced to the animated mascot for Fritos Corn Chips. Wearing a sombrero, sporting a thin mustache, stubble, a gold tooth, and carrying two six-shooter pistols on his hips, the Frito Bandito was created by Foote, Cone & Belding, animated by Tex Avery (the same animator who created Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck), and voiced by Mel Blanc, who also voiced Speedy Gonzales and Porky Pig. While Frito corn chips thought the cartoon mascot was a win, many advocacy groups, including the National Mexican-American Anti-Defamation Committee found the Frito Bandito campaign to be racist. With a Mexican accent and jingle, the NMAADC found the Mexican bandit to be highly disrespectful.
Frito-Lay eventually retired the Frito Bandito commercial in 1971 and moved on to promoting the company with the muncha bunch.

What is Margarita Burn and How to Avoid It
Have you ever heard of a margarita burn? Known as Phytophotodermatitis, margarita burn is an inflammatory eruption resulting from contact with botanical substances then exposure to UVA rays. Simply put, it's a chemical burn and chemical reaction from juice and oil from citrus fruits that reacts to sun exposure by blistering.
While it's known as margarita burn, you can get blisters from any kind of citrus fruit (lime juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice), celery, figs, fennel, and even wild parsnips. The skin condition causes painful blisters and mild burns that show up the next day and feels like a severe sunburn.

The Difference Between Garlic Powder & Garlic Salt
The taste of garlic can bring a meal from zero to 100. Seriously, if you're frying up meat that's been thawed for a couple of days, and you aren't even sure what you're preparing for dinner, just pull out some garlic cloves, garlic powder, and garlic salt.
Fresh garlic cloves are unmatched, but I don't necessarily feel like I'm settling for the bottom of the barrel spices when I use garlic powder or garlic salt. Although, I find myself using both when I don't have garlic cloves. Is that going overboard? There has got to a difference between the two.
Garlic Powder vs Garlic Salt
The major difference is that garlic salt is a mixture of garlic powder and salt. That's right, if you've been shaking table salt into your food items after using garlic salt, you were just diluting the garlic flavor with more salt.
I love the garlic and saltiness flavor with my veggies. I truly have to watch out for my salt intake because I can really throw down in the kitchen as long as I have garlic salt in the pantry. For one of the best garlic salts available, check out Amazon or Walmart for Lawry's garlic salt.

Dandelion Wine is an Old-Fashioned Liquor You Can Make at Home
Got patches of dandelions popping up on your lawn? Don't spray them with weed killer, pick them and turn them into delicious wine! This dandelion wine recipe is the pergect recipe for first time winemaking. Keep your white wine, I'll have homemade dandelion wine.
To start, collect about a gallon of dandelion flowers in a large bucket or bowl. Remove the green parts before moving on. The green parts on the whole flower give a bitter taste, so stick to the yellow flower heads. Winemakers suggest harvesting the dandelion blossoms and flower petals when they are fully open, usually in the early afternoon.
In a large pot, bring the water and sugar to a boil. In a large one-gallon fermentation vessel, add the dandelion petals, citrus zest, citrus juice, and yeast nutrient. Pour in the boiling water.
In a separate bowl dissolved the champagne yeast or wine yeast in lukewarm water and allow to stand until cool, about 2 hours. Pour the yeast into the container and top with water, leaving at least an inch of headspace for the carboy.
Cap the homebrewing container with an airlock and ferment for three weeks at room temperature or until fermentation has stopped.
Siphon the wine into a clean container and let the wine ferment for an additional 6 to 8 weeks. Once time has passed, Sciphon the dandelion wine into a clean container and prepare it for bottling. Bottle the flower wine into wine bottles and cork. Store the bottled wine in a cool dark place for 2-6 months at minimum before drinking.

Kit Kat Released a Birthday Cake-Flavored Candy Bar in April
It may not be your birthday today, but today still calls for some birthday cake treats. Kit Kat has announced that they're releasing a Kit Kat Birthday Cake bar. It will be a limited-edition flavor, so be sure to catch them while you can. They'll be hitting store shelves in April. It's so close!
We've seen a lot of birthday cake-flavored food and drinks over the years. From Dr Pepper Birthday Cake to Halo Top Birthday Cake Ice Cream, there are plenty of ways to get your special cake fix any time of the year. Luckily Kit Kat is on board with birthday cake flavor because a crispy wafer and white crème frosting will be so satisfying.
Yay for white chocolate frosting! This is the first time Kit Kat will add sprinkles to a Kit Kat candy bar. What's a birthday cake without sprinkles? Everything the new Kit Kat entails makes it sound exactly like the birthday cakes we love from the bakery.
I have a feeling the Kit Kat Birthday Cake bar will taste like an ice cream cake or birthday cake with buttercream frosting. (By the way, if you need a birthday cake anytime soon, Walmart has the best ice cream cake I've ever had).
Leave the cake mix, Funfetti cake frosting, and cake pans in the cabinet. Once April rolls around, all you'll need to do is visit Amazon or a grocery store aisle for the cupcake taste you tastebuds long for.
It looks like Kit Kat has eight new Kit Kat flavors coming in 2020. Instagram user markie_devo says it's going to be the year of the Kit Kat. Take a peek of what could possibly be in store for us.

The Major Difference Between Bleach & Splash-less Bleach
As I was shopping for bleach, I came across a variety of Clorox bleach products that I've never touched before. I've always used regular bleach for all of my everyday cleaning, but I was surprised to see lavender-scented bleach and splash-less bleach on the store shelf.
I can see why scented bleach may be appealing, but splash-less bleach? It turns out that splash-less bleach is popular for simply protecting your clothes while you clean. I have my fair share of ruined clothes from bleach, so I thought, "Why not give splash-less bleach a chance?" Although, I realized it wasn't ideal for disinfecting.
Does Splash-less Bleach Disinfect?
Unfortunately, splash-less bleach does not disinfect. It is still a powerful cleaner, but it shouldn't be used for sanitizing. The splash-less bleach formula even says on the back of the bottle that it does not sanitize. To prove this, I went to clorox.com and looked at their bleach products.
If you filter to bleach, you see regular bleach and splash-less bleach products. Once you add the disinfecting filter, splash-less bleach disappears from the list. I do appreciate the transparency, but if you weren't aware that it wasn't a disinfectant, it might be time to use Clorox bleach instead.
It seems as that Clorox Splash-Less Bleach will clean your household surfaces of germs, but it won't disinfect your countertops. To fight viruses and bacteria, a product meant for disinfection is what you need.
Continue to use a splash-less formula as a deodorizer or in washing machines to deep clean tough laundry stains. The last thing, check out this review from a customer. You'd think that all Clorox brand products consist of disinfecting household chemicals, but they don't.
Oh, bleach. Out of all of the cleaning products sitting under the sink, you're my favorite. Bleach whitens my dingy fabrics (old college T-Shirts, of course), and keeps my trash can, sinks, and bathtub looking sparkly clean.
This bleach solution disinfects and kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria. This liquid may not have a controlled pour, but you could also put bleach in the bottle cap. Deep cleaning benefits are worth it. You should absolutely prevent the spread of bacteria growth on an array of household surfaces.
Both formulas seem to be excellent on white clothing and tough stains. If you happen to have a no-splash formula, make it the designated laundry bleach. (Keep it next to your laundry detergent and keep out of reach of children.) If you have a regular bottle of bleach, only use that one for disinfecting purposes.
I'll use bleach over splash-less formulas any day. Less spilling does sound amazing, but regular bleach seems to be deodorizing and sanitizing all of my household surfaces just fine.

What is Deep South Chocolate Gravy?
It's not a southern brunch without chocolate gravy and buttermilk biscuits! This Appalachian chocolate gravy recipe is the epitome of comfort food. All you need is for this recipe is:
1/4 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup sugar
3 Tbsp all-purpose flour

I Tried 3 Grocery Pickup Services & Here's Who I Prefer
After thinking about how many hours I spend a month in the grocery store, I decided it was time to maximize my time when it came to running errands. In an attempt to make grocery shopping something I can do in under an hour, I tried three grocery pickup services in Texas.
I've used H-E-B for online orders plenty of times already. As someone who loves H-E-B tortillas and numerous H-E-B products, it's no surprise that I love shopping at their store. As for online, I love it just as much. The H-E-B website is easy to navigate, and so is their app.
Before I start shopping, I get to choose a pickup slot convenient for me. I love going in the mornings, and I always find a pickup time before work. I often see online coupons while I create my shopping list.
Their service offers fantastic scheduling, easy navigation, and coupons. Overall, I love that I'm able to order perishable items. That's right, you can order produce and meat online.
Target doesn't have a pickup fee or minimum purchase. I love it! Sometimes I don't want to run inside for five items. Target knows that and allows you to order groceries even if your bill is only $14.
You can use those coupons as you shop, so take advantage of it. Once you check out on the app, Target will let you know when your order is ready. This means there is no time slot.
If you have no idea when you'll be able to get from work to the Target on the other side of town, no worries, Target will hold your order for three days.
Walmart also has a pickup service. Yes, it's completely free. You can shop from the app or a desktop. My biggest con is the minimum order. You must order at least $30 of groceries to use the service.
It's worth it to me. I love saving time and, of course, not having to leave my car. As I mentioned, safety does play a massive role for me. I'm not one to grocery shop alone after dark, so having the option to pick up groceries before or after work without leaving my car is fantastic.

This Stain Remover Works Great on Stains and Poison Ivy
Who else is going to their grave blaming their laundry detergent and fabric softener on stains and won't admit that it could possibly be food grease? Me too! As long as we're buying laundry detergent and clothes, we're still keeping an eye out of the best stain remover. My Dawn dish washing liquid trick has done more for me than most pre-treatments.
According to customer reviews, Fels Naptha Laundry Soap is the laundry stain remover we've been looking for. Like I mentioned, the second I feel a drop of food on my shirt I'm rushing to the sink to add dishwashing liquid to it. The soap bar seems much more efficient! All you have to do is rub the stain with the wet soap bar and let it sit for a few minutes.
The next thing you need to do is load the washing machine. This powerful laundry bar is made to remove the tough stains from your clothes. I'm really interested to see if this works well with essential oil stains. Sometimes dealing with diffusers or making homemade face masks can be messy.
I was surprised to see that this bar of soap doesn't end with tackling the toughest stains. If you click to the top reviews on Amazon you'll see that this pre-treatment can dry up poison oak and poison ivy. Again, I'm not surprised that this could be safe for sensitive skin.
Back in college when I had my first major breakout, I used Dawn dish soap to wash my face. I'm not sure if it was safe, but it did work. It dried out some oily blemishes from finals stress just in time for summer break. I guess if it can remove oily stains, an oily face is nothing! I'm not recommending that of course, but it makes sense that a cleaning product can be safe on skin.
You can get this pre-treater bar soap at Amazon or Walmart. This just might be the one saving grace for dealing with oily foods. I've tried making a DIY remover with baking soda and cleaning products, and it didn't work out for me. I'm really looking forward to trying a bar of Fels Naptha.
Sometimes I am skeptical about my own laundry detergent. After I made the switch to a certain liquid laundry detergent I noticed random spotting on my T-shirts. They definitely weren't bleach stains. I'm hoping Fels Naptha is the solution to that problem! I can't believe I've missed this at the grocery store all of these years.
Word of mouth says a lot, so I'm going to give this Fels Naptha laundry bar a chance. If it can work on soiled baby clothes, hopefully, it will get that taco grease stain out of my favorite T-shirt.
