The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that often 20% of the causes create around 80% of the outcomes while the remaining causes are responsible for the rest. Discovered by the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, the principle became a valuable rule of thumb that allows our mind to understand all sorts of complex distributions, focus on the essentials, and prioritize what to do next.

These obsessions then make them do things to relieve the thoughts, a behavior called compulsions. Today we know that the Mere Exposure Effect is so robust, that it can even be demonstrated on animals as an experiment with fertile chicken eggs has shown. Tones of two different frequencies were played to different groups of chicks while they were still unhatched. Once hatched, each tone was played to both groups of chicks. The chicks consistently chose the tone played to them prenatally.

Two Types of Liberty
We often think of freedom as being able to act without restraints. But as one’s freedom can affect the freedom of another, acting without restraint usually creates problems. To prevent that, we create rules. Philosopher Isaiah Berlin went one step further and distinguished two types of freedom: negative liberty, the absence of constraints, and positive liberty, the power to act regardless of limitations.

The Peak-End Rule: 2 Things We Actually Remember
People tend to judge and remember experiences based on how they felt at the peak and at the end of it. This psychological phenomenon is known as the peak-end-rule. The model was first proposed by Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Kahneman and infers that instead of remembering a whole experience we only remember snapshots of it. Today we know that how well the rule works also depends on our expectation going into the experience.

The Universe 25 Mouse Experiments
In 1972, John B. Calhoun built an utopia for mice. Every aspect of Universe 25, as this particular model was called, was designed to cater for the well-being of its rodent residents, increase their lifespan, and allow them to mate. It was not the first time the ethologist had built a world for rodents. Colhoun had been creating utopian environments for rats and mice since the 1940s, with consistent results: overpopulation leads to explosive violence and hypersexual activity, followed by asexuality, self-destruction, and extinction.
