Autism Spectrum: Atypical Minds in a Stereotypical World
Help us to reach more teachers and students to learn about autism and other important topics in their classrooms! https://www.patreon.com/sprouts 🐦
When we examine 100 random teenagers, around 1 to 2 will have minds that are atypical in a particular way and could be diagnosed with autism. Autism is not a disease and therefore can not be cured. What we can do, however, is to learn more about it and gain an understanding of it. In this video Timo, a young boy diagnosed with Autism will help us understand how living with a neurodivergent mind can be.

ABOUT Fröbel:
In 1838 the German educator Friedrich Fröbel laid the foundations of modern education when he opened the Play and Activity Institute. He soon called it Kindergarten, reflecting his belief that young children should be nurtured and nourished ‘like plants in a garden’. #kindergarten #learn #teach #sproutslearning

5 Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Life
There are four widely researched styles of parenting: authoritative, permissive, authoritarian, and neglectful. The styles range from controlling to undemanding, and from cold and unresponsive to loving and receptive. In recent years, over-involved parents, who are present in every aspect of their child’s life, are often referred to as the fifth style. They are also known as snowplow or helicopter parents. #parenting

The Dunning Kruger Effect
The Dunning Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias that makes people believe they are smarter and more capable than they actually are. The effect is related to people’s general inaptitude to recognize their lack of ability. To learn how this comes about and what you can do to avoid it from happening to you, watch our video. #learn #motivation #bias

Extrinsic vs Intrinsic Motivation
When we study how we get motivated to learn, develop, and succeed, we can identify two contrary forces: extrinsic and intrinsic ones. Extrinsic motivation drives your thinking and behavior from the outside, though rewards such as money or fame. Intrinsic motivation comes from within in the form of natural curiosity.

John Dewey’s 4 Principles of Education
There are only a few ideas that had as much of an impact on education as those of John Dewey. The American philosopher, psychologist and educator believed children to be active contributors and agents of their learning, and not just passive recipients of knowledge of previous generations. He believed that for knowledge to be acquired successfully, learning should be an experience. His Experiential Learning approach was based on four core principles. To find out what these are and how it works in real life, watch our video. Enjoy the sound effects with headphones on! 😊 🎧 #learn #dewey #theory

Sapolsky’s Theory of Evolutionary Psychology
Robert Sapolsky's theory of behavioral biology claims that behind every human action is a biological explanation. The concept centers around the idea that in order to truly understand human behavior, we must study it at all levels — from what happens inside the brain a nano second before a behavior occurred all the way to the time when humans and apes last shared a common ancestor. This is our first video with sound effects — enjoy it on headphones 😊 🎧#learn #evolutionary #psychology

The Whole Child: Ackermann’s 4 Natural Forces of Development
The Ackermann theory of The Whole Child Development pays respect to the fact that there are many aspects of human potential that grades can't measure. Besides curiosity and intelligence, children may want to develop creativity, passion, resilience, intuition, confidence, generosity, mindfulness, humor, and many, many other important traits. Instead of splitting children into a collection of 4-8 skills, such as social, emotional and so forth, the theory identified four natural urges that drive our growth throughout childhood into adult life: Being Me, Us, the World, and Human Creations. #learn #wholechild

The Active Learning Method
"Active learning" means you participate, collaborate with others, and apply concepts to the real world. It requires hard mental effort but leads to better retention and an understanding of the material that can be transferred to other situations. To explain how to apply Active Learning in classrooms, we collaborated with Professor Carl Wieman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, who researches and champions the approach. Prof. Wieman helped us proofread, fact check and write the script — he was an invaluable source of information. It was our greatest honor to be able to work with a mind as bright as his. #activelearning

Piaget’s Schema: Accommodation and Assimilation of New Information

Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning is a mental manipulation to reprogram natural body functions. It is a way of learning where a stimulus that triggers a biological response is paired with a new stimulus that then results in the same reaction.

Watson’s Theory of Behaviourism
John B. Watson famously claimed that if he were to be given a dozen healthy infants, he could shape them into anything; doctors, lawyers, artists, beggars, or thieves, regardless of their background or genetic predispositions. First, he completed experiments with 8-month old Albert. He later applied his theory when raising his own children. In essence, he applied the scientific method to human psychology which he called behaviorism.

ADHD at School: Signs, Symptoms, Examples and Solutions
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and is considered a mental disorder. Education Reform: The New Orleans School Experiment
After publishing this video we realized we gave an all too one-sided view on the topic. To give the other side a voice, we highly recommend you to listen to this conversion with Diane Ravitch:

In 2005, Katrina, a massive hurricane, struck the city of New Orleans and destroyed virtually everything, including all schools. As a result, everyone left the city, kids stopped going to school, the school board lost its funding, the teachers lost their jobs leading to the unions losing all of their members. It was a true disaster for everyone.
Then the city's government came up with a great idea...

Bruner’s 3 Steps of Learning in a Spiral Curriculum
In the 1980s, the Singaporean government decided to stop importing foreign textbooks and, instead, build the world's best math curriculum from scratch. Since that time, Singaporeans study fewer concepts with greater detail, following Bruner's guideline.

The Confirmation Bias
Confirmation bias is a tendency to look for, interpret, and recall information in ways that affirm our preconception. Whenever we encounter objective facts on an issue we look at them through the lens of our own beliefs. As a result, we see and overrate where the two intercept. The bias is strongest for emotionally charged issues or when we search for desired outcomes. This joke illustrates it quite well...

Kohlberg’s 6 Stages of Moral Development
Lawrence Kohlberg's theory claims that our development of moral reasoning happens in six stages: 1. Obedience and Punishment, 2. Self-interest 3. Interpersonal Accord and Conformity 4.Authority and maintaining social order, 5.Social Contract, 6.Universal Ethical principles.
Kohlberg claims that we reach one stage after another showing an ever-deeper understanding of moral questions. The stages themselves are structured in three levels: Pre-Conventional, Conventional and Post-Conventional.

The Big Five Personality Traits
The theory of the Big Five Personality Traits, claims that we can describe ourselves with five main characteristics: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism.
Each of us varies in how much of each trait is shown in our personality.
In order to understand what each trait really means, let’s look at these five characters who stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean.

Peter Principle: When People Get Promoted Into Maximum Incompetence
The Peter Principle argues that people who have success in big hierarchical organizations are promoted until they reach their own "level of incompetence”. Here they are often stuck for life.
Let´s look at the story about David and Diana, two graduates, who first met at a sales training. They were so proud to have gotten a job in which they could actually help people. Little did they know, that they had joined one of the most dangerous organizations in modern America.
