Asch’s Conformity Experiment: Can You Withstand Groupthink?
In the 1950s the psychologist Solomon Asch devised a study to investigate whether peer pressure can be strong enough to change our perception, and make us believe in things that are not true. To do so, he set up a clever experiment on conformity that raises questions about our ability to think freely.

The Milgram Experiment: When Ordinary People Do Terrible Things
Are ordinary people able to do terrible things? And if so, how many would give high electric shocks to an innocent student, just because they are following an order? To find out, Stanley Milgram, a young psychologist at Yale University, conducted a clever, but controversial, experiment that changed our understanding of human behavior forever.

Opportunity Cost: The Hidden Cost of Everything
Every day, we have to make decisions, be it small, like trying a new soap, or huge, like moving abroad. Each such decision comes at a price. This price is the benefit we forego by not choosing the other option. Economists call these benefits “opportunity costs”. Although they are often less obvious and sometimes speculative, opportunity costs can be huge, therefore, learning about them makes sense! Watch our video to learn more about what opportunity costs are, how they work in real life, and how you can calculate the true costs of going to college.

Exercise 1: The costs of dropping out of college
Let your class calculate the opportunity costs of a high school student who thinks about dropping out of college to help in the family business instead:
The cost of tuition and living is $2,000 a month.
It takes a total of 6 years to finish university.
After obtaining a degree the student can work in the field of medicine for 34 years earning $10,000 a month and spending $3,000 on monthly living expenses.
If the student is entering the family business he or she earns $3,500 a month right away for the next 40 years with zero living expenses.

The Science of Phobias & The Famous Case of Button Boy
A phobia is an excessive fear of a seemingly harmless thing. Those affected, go to great lengths to avoid certain situations and if a situation cannot be avoided, they experience severe distress, panic attacks or even fainting. The famous case of Button Boy shows how a single childhood event can create a phobia that is surprisingly complex to treat.

Set up the room in a way that groups of two can sit together.
Let the students pick a phobia from this list, or allow them choose one that they experience themselves.
Each student then writes down the main aspects of their phobia in their own words. What phobia do you have? Does it smell and feel like something? Where do you think it comes from?
Now they go together in pairs and share with each other what they have written. Together they think about ideas for each other on how to overcome the phobia.
Once they are done, let them present the phobia of their partner.
Finally let the students vote on one phobia which they want to explore deeper and research possible treatment protocols.

Sibling Dynamics: How Brothers and Sisters Affect Each Other
Most people have a sibling — in fact, children in the U.S. today are more likely to grow up with a brother or sister than with a father. While a lot of social scientists research the impact of schools and parenting, little attention is given to a relationship that might be even more consequential. To understand just how important our relationship with our siblings are, let’s remind ourselves of the tragic story of the two most famous brothers in Western history.

Adler's research mostly resisted the test of time with modern science techniques showing that his theories were quite accurate. The main one being that order of birth impacts the most children's personalities. This interacts also with gender. One huge limitation of adlerian theories was that he performed his research only on caucasian english and north american children which means that his research could not be generalized to other ethnicities and populations and cultures. However recent research is trying to do this and apparently although the effects are slightly different across cultures there is always a difference in behavior that is correlated with order of birth. Social Learning Theory: Bandura’s Bobo Beatdown Experiments
What do you think? Can we learn only through direct experience, or also from studying others? To prove that children can learn by mere observation, american-canadian psychologist Albert Bandura came up with the Bobo Doll Experiments - a set of controversial studies, which involved preschool children, adult models and a stand-up punch doll. Experiment! Choose two or more activities that your class will be doing together (best would be simple physical actions like summersaults or yoga poses). For each activity select a different style of demonstration (one demonstrate yourself, one let a student demonstrate, and one will only be described to the students). Make sure everyone executes each pose or activity once. Which learning style do your students prefer? Could they do it better? Encourage each of your students to demonstrate their own activity or pose and explain it in a way they think their classmates will get it. Vary the level of detail of explanation for more interesting results!

Tragedy of the Commons
The tragedy of the commons is a situation in which individuals acting in their own self-interest behave contrary to the common good of all others by depleting or spoiling a shared resource through their collective action. The phenomenon was first described by the British economist William Forster Lloyd in 1833. Lloyd observed that because grazing on the commons (fields that were open to anyone) was free, the land was spoiled, which diminished the value of the fields for everyone. Can you think of a free resource that’s possibly subject to the same tragedy? Sharks might!

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
Don’t Kill The Rabbit! To experience the tragedy of the commons first hand, here is a group game.
The game has four elements:
A circle = the commons
Participants = farmers
Carrots = food
Rabbits = animals to be fed
Getting started:
Choose a number of people (say 5) to do this exercise with.
On an erasable board, draw a circle, then draw carrots in it (say 20).
Give each participant a secret note with a number on it (say: 1, 3, 1, 1, 4). This number represents how many rabbits each participant has to feed. Each rabbit needs to eat at least one carrot per round to stay alive.
Ask participants, one after the other, to take as many carrots from the circle as they want. At the end of the round, double the amount of all the carrots that are left.
Then continue to play round after round until all carrots are gone and the first rabbit dies.
The first time you do this, make sure you have exactly twice as many carrots as there are rabbits to feed so that if everyone picks just what they need (the carrots are replenished). What do you observe? Are the commons being depleted and do the rabbits die?
Try to do this again with a different number of carrots, letting participants tell each other how many rabbits they are feeding, or with settings we haven’t thought of. Let us know what you observe in the comments below.

Dyslexia: Reading, Writing and Spelling Problems
Around 5-10% of all children are born with dyslexia. Minds of children with dyslexia may switch numbers when reading, swap letters as they appear, or skip words when writing. Some see their hand-written letters backwards and others struggle with grammar rules — spelling correctly is often impossible. While most struggle with education, some have turned dyslexia to their advantage, as is the case of Ingvar Kamprad, who built a multi-billion dollar empire despite being dyslexic.

Rent Seeking: Taking Without Giving
Rent-seeking is a behavior that describes the tendency of people to seek profits without doing any real work. This reduces economic efficiency through the misallocation of resources. Rent-seeking also hinders the creation of wealth, reduces government revenue, increases income inequality, and potentially leads to national decline.

Role play with your students: If available, find a real life example of a company exhibiting rent-seeking behavior that was brought to the public eye and resolved recently. Split your class into company representatives, company employees and government officials or other key players in the case. Act out the case of how the officials are accusing the company of rent seeking behavior. But how should the company react? How does this affect the employees? What would your students do differently as compared to how the case was resolved in real life?

Skin in the Game: No Risk No Learning
Skin in the game is an economic and ethical principle whereby those who seek to gain from their activity, should also lose when things go wrong. The principal is also important for learning, skill building and human development. Because those that want to learn without taking the risks of failure, don’t receive the feedback necessary to experience what it means to make mistakes. They can study their entire lives, but actually don’t learn anything.

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
Do you have “skin in the game”? Reflect with your students on how this concept applies to real life situations and ask them for ideas on how to put their skin in the game for their own learning.
In addition you can ask your students to rate the effectiveness of your teaching on a scale of 1-5 after every class. Start the next session with publishing the results and continue to do so for the entire course. Like that the students learn that you put your skin in the game and as a result might realize how the classroom experience changes.

Neglect Theory: The Story of the Romanian Orphans
Children who experience physical, cognitive or emotional neglect, often face anxiety. As a result, their body produces stress hormones. If this happens a lot, these hormones become toxic for their developing brain, which then later can repress emotional and cognitive well-being for life.
Non profit of Daniel Rucareanu: https://www.facebook.com/federeii/
TREATMENTS
If a child is used to suppressing their emotions, because of neglect, it may be difficult to recognize and experience them in a healthy way. Therapists and mental health professionals can help both children and adults learn to identify, accept, and express their emotions in a healthful manner. These treatment options include:
1. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT): CBT aims to explain to you what's going on inside your brain and how to cope with irrational feelings or fears.
2. The Hoffman Process: This 7-8 day's guided process, designed to bring participants back into their childhood to reconnect with their parents and make peace.
3. Family therapy: If a child is being emotionally neglected at home, family therapy can help both the parents and the child.
4. Parenting classes: Parents who neglect their child’s emotional needs could benefit from parenting classes.
5. Psychoanalysis: The aim of psychoanalysis therapy is to release repressed emotions and experiences, i.e., make the unconscious conscious.

The Non-Violent Communication Model
There are arguably two styles of communication. Communication that’s coercive, manipulative, and hurtful and communication that’s honest, respectful, and compassionate.
Marshall Rosenberg, who developed a model for Nonviolent Communication (NVC), liked to demonstrate the differences between the styles with two animals. The Jackal as a symbol of aggression, dominance and violent communication. The Giraffe with his long neck and big heart (the biggest of any land animal) as a representation of a clear-sighted and compassionate, nonviolent communicator.

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
Organize a brief session where your students can practice nonviolent communication. In groups of two, let your students act out a scene where one, who is always late, is late again to the birthday party of the other. Prompt your students to use the observations, feelings, needs and requests to both communicate a resolution to this issue. When the students are done, make a list of what they came up with for each stage.
Now discuss: what do you need to use Rosenberg’s methodology? Can you practice introspection and rationality or do you need to be born with them? Are there times when it is OK to get angry sometimes?

In this Sprouts special with Stephen Hicks, we examine Nietzsche’s explanation for how ethics develop and the consequences for master types living in a world that’s dominated by the morality of slaves.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger”, Friedrich Nietzsche famously wrote. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems: 5 Forces Impacting Our Lives
In 1964 most people thought that the reason people ended up poor was a matter of biology and had little to do with the environment they grew up in. Urie Bronfenbrenner, a young psychologist, helped us understand that a child’s environment also matters. When he was invented to explain his Ecological System Theory to the US congress, he made history. #sprouts #socialsciences #sproutslearning

CLASSROOM EXERCISE
Give each child a sheet of paper with Bronfenbrenner's 5 systems and let them draw the people and forces that affect their lives in each of the circles. Once they are done, let them explain the interrelationships between the different forces and how they affect their lives to a peer. Later you can ask your students what they know about poverty? Is it happening in your country and if so, how would a poor child’s 5 systems look different from theirs? You may even want to let your students simulate a congress and make an action plan to solve poverty in your country. Who knows, they might just make it come true one day ;).

Dark Triad Personalities: Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy
In psychology, the dark triad represents three personality traits: Narcissism, Psychopathy and Machiavellianism. People scoring high on the 3 traits are more likely to commit crimes, and create severe social problems in society. What do you think? Can these traits be overcome or will they always cause problems for individuals and society?

Bonhoeffer‘s Theory of Stupidity
Dietrich Bonhoeffer argued that stupid people are more dangerous than evil ones. This is because while we can protest against or fight evil people, against stupid ones we are defenseless — reasons fall on dead ears. Bonhoeffer's famous text, which we slightly edited for this video, serves any free society as a warning of what can happen when certain people gain too much power. #stupidity #sprouts

John Locke: Educating Clearly Thinking Minds
Locke’s ideas on religion and democracy became the foundation of most liberal societies, making him the father of liberalism. Some however believe that his parenting guide, “Some Thoughts Concerning Education”, may have been even more influential. To learn what ideas from 1694 are still relevant today, watch our video.
