Labour and Lib Dems will work together in general election but no formal pact! Insider says!
Labour and the Lib Dems will work together to deliver the Tories a fatal blow at the general election, despite denying an official Lib-Lab pact, insiders have suggested. Speaking to i at the Somerton and Frome by-election count in the early hours of Friday morning, Labour’s Bristol North West MP Darren Jones, said the Lib Dems’ overturning of a 19,213 majority in the former Tory stronghold was “great news” for Labour. Mr Jones added: “Let’s be honest, this is great for us to have the Lib Dems winning in the West Country as these are seats we won’t win.”

Keir Starmer won't commit to more money for public services
Sir Keir Starmer has refused to say whether a Labour government would spend more money on public services. The Labour leader told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg his party would always invest in public services but to do this it needed to grow the economy. "That has to start with responsible economics and it has to be coupled with reform," he added.
Some, including Labour's biggest union backer Unite, have called for the party to be more ambitious in its pledges. However, Sir Keir insisted his promise to reform public services was bold. He told the BBC he did not just want to offer "sticking plaster" solutions. "If our horizon and focus is only on the immediate problems, we will never fix the fundamentals," he said, adding that the NHS was "a classic example". He also gave the example of building more homes, which he said could be achieved not by spending taxpayers money but by reforming the planning system and restoring housebuilding targets.

Keir Starmer clashes with unions after refusing to back down on two child benefit cap
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has seen off attempts to push the party into committing to repeal the two-child benefit cap and toughen up workers’ rights in its election manifesto. Sir Keir set himself up for a clash with the party’s union backers after he refused to compromise at the meeting of the party’s national policy forum this weekend. The policy document produced by the forum, which will make up the initial framework of Labour’s next manifesto, contains “no unfunded spending commitments”, a spokesman said.

Israeli protests reignite as Netanyahu pushes new justice bill
Tens of thousands of Israeli protesters have demonstrated in Tel Aviv and other cities against proposed changes to the judicial system they say could mean a more authoritarian government. Demonstrators have kept up the pressure with weekly rallies against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who returned to power in December at the head of a coalition with ultra-Orthodox Jewish and extreme-right allies.

Israel expels Sub Labans from their home in Jerusalem’s Old City
Ramallah, occupied West Bank – Israeli forces and settlers have expelled a Palestinian family from their home in the occupied Old City of Jerusalem based on an Israeli court order. The order said the family, who have lived in their home for 70 years, should be removed so settlers could take over.
Just after dawn on Tuesday, dozens of Israeli police and paramilitary officers raided the Ghaith-Sub Laban family in occupied East Jerusalem and forced them out before settlers moved in. In videos shared by local journalists, Ahmad Sub Laban is seen carrying a small tree out of his home. He reportedly told local media the tree is as old as his 17-year-old son and that it was the one thing the family asked to take with them as a memento of the house “until they return to it”. Dozens of Israeli left-wing activists protested in front of the family’s home until late morning on Tuesday.

HS2 Rail link rated 'unachievable' by infrastructure watchdog
The HS2 rail line has been given an "unachievable" rating by an official watchdog. It has been given a "red" warning for its first two phases - from London to Birmingham then onto Crewe - by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority. The project aims to create high-speed rail links between London and central and northern England, but has faced major delays and criticism.
The government says it remains committed to delivering HS2.
The red rating came in the IPA's annual report on major projects, which was published on 20 July and gave a snapshot of progress on 244 projects.
The IPA describes itself as the government's centre of expertise for infrastructure and major projects, and reports to the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury. Under the IPA's grading system, a red rating implies: "Successful delivery of the project appears to be unachievable."

How many Namibians is too many for Suella? 935
The last week of Parliament is famously a good time to bury bad news – but Suella Braverman has made little attempt to hide her latest attack on Black and Brown people. The UK home secretary announced changes to the Immigration Rules on Wednesday that appeared to serve one purpose only – revoking visa-free travel for residents of a handful of small Black and Brown majority countries. Making the announcement, Braverman claimed people from Dominica, Honduras, Namibia, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu were “abusing” visa-free travel, which is one of the only remaining legal routes to claim asylum in Britain. The UK had previously permitted passport-holders of these countries to stay in the UK for six months at a time. Now, Braverman has revoked this right, saying Namibians and Hondurans rank first among non-visa nationals for asylum claims.

Gulf stream could collapse as early as 2025, study suggests
The Gulf Stream system could collapse as soon as 2025, a new study suggests. The shutting down of the vital ocean currents, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (Amoc) by scientists, would bring catastrophic climate impacts. Amoc was already known to be at its weakest in 1,600 years owing to global heating and researchers spotted warning signs of a tipping point in 2021. The new analysis estimates a timescale for the collapse of between 2025 and 2095, with a central estimate of 2050, if global carbon emissions are not reduced. Evidence from past collapses indicate changes of temperature of 10C in a few decades, although these occurred during ice ages. Other scientists said the assumptions about how a tipping point would play out and uncertainties in the underlying data are too large for a reliable estimate of the timing of the tipping point. But all said the prospect of an Amoc collapse was extremely concerning and should spur rapid cuts in carbon emissions.

Flagship Brexit trade deal with Pacific has ‘no major economic gains for UK’
The government’s new flagship Brexit trade deal with Pacific countries will "not lead to substantial economic gains for the UK", top trade experts have said. Business secretary Kemi Badenoch last week signed Britain up to the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) and claimed it would provide "a big boost" for the economy possible only outside the EU. She claimed official estimates from her own department of just a tiny 0.08 per cent GDP gain over 10 years were too small and did not take into account potential hidden benefits from joining.
But academics at the respected UK Trade Policy Observatory who have examined the agreement say the conditions for such a hidden further boost appear to be “highly unlikely”. The Sussex University academics also note that the deal’s small benefit of 0.08 per cent appears to “fall somewhat short of compensating for the predicted 4 per cent GDP loss of leaving the EU”.

Energy bill support More than 700,000 households miss out
More than 700,000 households in Great Britain have missed out on £300m worth of support for energy bills, according to BBC analysis of government figures. These are households in places such as park homes and houseboats who did not have an energy supplier to apply a one-off £400 payment automatically. The government said in February that more than 900,000 such households were eligible. But only about 200,000 applications were made before the 31 May deadline. The government announced last year that all households would get £400 taken off their energy bill over winter. For households who pay their bills by direct debit, the support was given through monthly payments from October to March. However, for those with non-conventional energy set-ups the government launched the £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme Alternative Funding earlier this year.
BBC Verify analysis of data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero shows that of the more than 200,000 applications made under the scheme.

Drunk A&E patients should be fined, senior medics say as they reveal plan to save the NHS
Fining patients for missing appointments or turning up to A&E drunk, bringing staff out of retirement to update millions of people on waiting lists, and having a Bank of England-style independent board to run the health service are just some of the radical ideas that can transform the NHS, senior health figures have written in a new book out on Friday, July 28.
A group of healthcare leaders, policymakers and patient representatives has come together to reflect on what the NHS can and should do to adapt to remain fit for purpose. Conversations About the NHS sets out the case for change, chapter by chapter, by those who know it best.
“I’ve spent 40-plus years in the NHS from training to consultant to academic, so the idea for this has been bubbling along in my mind for some time,” says the book’s author and editor, Professor Dinesh Bhugra.

Dan Wootton was a ‘Serial Bully’ at the Sun – But Bosses Promoted Him as Complaints were Silenced!
Dan Wootton was the subject of at least six bullying claims from colleagues while working for The Sun – but was promoted by the newspaper as complainants were silenced with large pay-offs and non-disclosure agreements, Byline Times can reveal. The allegations against the journalist – today a star presenter for GB News and columnist for MailOnline – range from constructive dismissal to age discrimination, while several witnesses have also described a culture of sexual harassment under Wootton.
It follows this newspaper’s revelations on Monday that Wootton used the online pseudonyms ‘Martin Branning’ and ‘Maria Joseph’ – among others – to trick and bribe scores of men into revealing compromising sexual material for “tax free” sums of money of up to £30,000. Representatives for Wootton have been asked by this newspaper to confirm or deny whether the presenter was, or is connected to, Branning. Neither Wootton, in his GB News statement on Tuesday, nor his representatives, have yet clarified this point. He denies any allegations of “criminality”. Byline Times has now spoken to multiple former editorial and support staff at Britain’s biggest tabloid, many of whom are fearful of being identified after their experiences working at Murdoch-owned News UK – with one left suicidal, another suffering stress-induced hair loss, and others deserting the industry.

Cost of Grenfell Tower disaster soars to nearly £1 2bn
The financial cost of the Grenfell Tower disaster has reached nearly £1.2bn – 4,000 times the amount that was saved by replacing fire-retardant cladding with a cheaper combustible alternative during the disastrous refurbishment.
The bulk of the cost is being met from the public purse, dwarfing the compensation to bereaved and survivors paid by companies involved in wrapping the west London council’s block in combustible materials before the fire in June 2017 that killed 72 people. The £1.17bn known to have been spent or allocated so far is enough to fund more than 10,000 new social homes. The figure is certain to be an underestimate because several organisations involved in the disaster have not disclosed their costs.
Deborah Coles, the director of Inquest, a charity that provides expertise on state-related deaths, said: “The human cost of preventable tragedies is always paramount, but this staggering sum shows how failing to enact change when it is called for has a significant cost to the public purse because death is expensive.

Climate change Which countries will foot the bill??
Record-breaking heat in China. Wildfires forcing Swiss villages to evacuate. Drought ravaging Spanish crops. As the costs of climate change rack up, a debate is surging among governments: who should pay? The question has been in the spotlight amid this week's climate talks between the U.S. and China, where the world's two biggest economies tried to find ways to work together on issues ranging from renewable energy deployment to climate finance ahead of this year's U.N. climate summit, COP28, in Dubai. Given China's rapid economic growth and increasing emissions, pressure has grown on Beijing to join the group of countries providing this funding.
During the talks in Beijing, U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said the two sides would continue to discuss climate finance over the next four months, before the COP28 conference starting Nov. 30. "It's difficult to argue that countries like China, Brazil or Saudi Arabia should still be put at the same level as the least developed countries and small island developing states," a diplomat from one European Union country told Reuters.

Citizen science survey finds that one in ten people have become ill after swimming in UK rivers
More than one in 10 people have fallen ill directly as a result of exposure to polluted river water, according to the participants in a new citizen science project. This found that 11.4 per cent of participants believed they had become ill after coming into contact with sewage, agricultural run-off, heavy metals from disused mines and chemicals leaching from plastic in rivers, canals, streams, lakes and ponds – although it cannot be proved definitively that that was the cause of any illness. Even so, the figures provide valuable evidence about the potential health risks posed by polluted water to humans – which are disputed and about which little research has been done.

Cabinet ministers being sued by Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers 'falsely imprisoned' on Diego Garcia
Three British cabinet ministers are being sued by a group of Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers, who claim they are being falsely imprisoned in dangerous conditions on a small island in the Indian Ocean. Some of the migrants have spent more than a year-and-a-half on Diego Garcia, a British overseas territory, after the navy rescued their ailing fishing boat as it attempted a crossing to Canada in October 2021. Residents at the camp said the conditions were unbearable and reported cases of sexual and physical assault. Several people have committed acts of self-harm or attempted suicide. In total, 89 asylum seekers have since arrived in Diego Garcia.

The ‘green bus’ revolution in chaos as Government says scheme that cost millions isn’t working!
A flagship pledge by Boris Johnson to turn Britain’s bus services “green” is facing fresh problems after the Government admitted a scheme to reduce emissions that cost millions is not working. Local councils have spent at least £45m since 2016 retro fitting older, diesel buses with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhausts which were supposed to reduce the amount of nitrous oxides they emit. But the Department for Transport has quietly been writing to local authorities in recent months to tell them it has paused funding for retrofitting as a result of ‘poor performance’.

Bodies of 87 people found in Sudan mass grave, says UN
At least 87 people including ethnic Masalits have been found buried in a mass grave in Sudan’s West Darfur, the UN human rights office has said, adding that it had credible information that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were responsible. RSF officials denied any involvement, saying the paramilitary group was not a party to the conflict in West Darfur.
Ethnically motivated bloodshed has escalated in recent weeks in step with fighting between rival military factions that erupted in April. In El Geneina, witnesses and rights groups have reported waves of attacks by the RSF and Arab militias against the non-Arab Masalit people, including shootings at close range. Local people were forced to dispose of the bodies including those of women and children in a shallow grave in an open area near the city between 20-21 June, the UN statement said. Some of the people had died from untreated injuries, it said.

Black Lives Matter movement to mark 10 years of activism, renews call to defund the police
The Black Lives Matter movement hits a milestone on Thursday, marking 10 years since its 2013 founding in response to the acquittal of the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Gunned down in a Florida gated community where his father lived in 2012, Martin was one of the earliest symbols of a movement that now wields influence in politics, law enforcement and broader conversations about racial progress in and outside the U.S. BLM activists and organizations plan to mark a decade of the movement with in-person and virtual events. Calls to action include a renewed push to defund police departments and reinvest in Black communities that have suffered disproportionately from police brutality, unequal treatment in criminal justice systems and mass incarceration.

Bereaved families demand reform to UK’s outdated drug laws
“It’s been ten years since my daughter died,” says Anne-Marie Cockburn, a softly spoken woman wearing a T-shirt reading, ‘My daughter’. “It feels very distorted to say that number. But it has been ten years since I last held my child’s hand.” Cockburn’s daughter, Martha, died at the age of 15 after taking MDMA. Today, her bereaved mother is part of Anyone’s Child, a network of families impacted by drug-related deaths. When I meet Cockburn, she is standing outside Parliament alongside 150 others, many of whom are wearing similar T-shirts: ‘My son’, ‘My nephew’, ‘My friend’. All are united not only by the pain of losing a loved one, but in their belief that the UK’s drug laws were to blame for their deaths. In the 52 years since the Misuse of Drugs Act was introduced, both the availability of drugs and our understanding of them have radically changed. But the prohibition model still stands. Drug production and distribution are in the hands of criminals, many users are ignorant of what they are taking, and addiction is still treated as a criminal matter, rather than a health issue.

Badenoch clashes with Kuenssberg over post Brexit trade deals ‘Stop interrupting me’
Kemi Badenoch clashed with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg during a feisty exchange on the merits the Indo-Pacific trade bloc and post-Brexit trade deals – at one point telling the host: “Stop interrupting me.” The trade secretary lashed out at her Brexit critics during her round of Sunday interviews – claiming they had been wrong to “laugh” at the government and should “stop talking Britain down”. It comes as the UK formally agreed to become the first European country to join a major Indo-Pacific trade bloc – hailed as “momentous” despite forecasts placing its value at just £1.8bn a year. But Ms Badenoch admitted that the chances of the UK securing a free trade agreement with the US are “very low” and said: “We can’t force other countries to do things.” Appearing on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the host remined her of the Tory manifesto promise to get a post-Brexit agreement with the Americans – asking the minister if Brexiteers had been wrong to promise “buccaneering Britain” that would benefit from trade deals.

55% would vote to Remain in the EU and two thirds think Brexit was a mistake, poll shows
The majority of Britons would vote to rejoin the European Union in a major shift in opinion against Brexit seven years after the referendum vote, new polling shows. A survey of adults by YouGov shows that 51 per cent of people would vote to re-enter the EU, the highest the pollster has recorded since the 2016 referendum. Asked how they would vote if a second referendum were to be held now, in 2023, the number of those opting for “Remain” is 55 per cent, while just 31 per cent said they would vote Leave.

‘It can’t be any worse’ In Boris Johnson’s back yard, Britons are desperate for a change
“Everything now is a struggle,” Mike Okoli says, in the world-weary tone he slumps into the moment a customer shuffles out of his store.
“When I started this business, my hair was all black,” insists Okoli, an affable 64-year-old who left Nigeria in the 1990s to set up an Afro-Caribbean food store on the western edge of London. But prices have soared, money has disappeared, and Okoli’s head is hairless, save for a patch of gray hiding his chin. On the surface, there is little connecting Okoli with Boris Johnson – the most dominant and divisive presence in British politics in a generation, who took the United Kingdom out of the European Union and once told his family he wanted to be “World King.” But until last month, Okoli could count Johnson as his neighbor. “As a person, he’s a jolly good fellow,” the shopkeeper tells CNN, one eye locked on the couriers dropping off produce, as he recalls with some pride a rare visit Johnson made to the town. “He’s somebody that you want to listen to, no matter what he’s saying.”
Okoli says he still “loves” the disgraced ex-leader’s charisma. “But…” he adds, trailing off. With Johnson, now, there is always a “but.”

Almost 600 schools in England undergoing urgent structural checks
Specialists are carrying out urgent checks on almost 600 schools in England identified as being at possible risk of structural collapse because of crumbling concrete, with many more not aware of the danger of their buildings, a new report finds. The Department for Education (DfE) has identified 572 schools so far where it believes reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), a building material that deteriorates over time and is susceptible to sudden failure, may have been used during construction.
RAAC has been confirmed in 65 schools after 196 surveys, of which 24 required emergency action, according to a report by the National Audit Office (NAO). The danger has been considered so great that a number of schools have had to close, either fully or partly, while others have required emergency propping up owing to fears of collapse.
