Repairing Dirty Painted MIG Welds
This video is on the repairing of dirty, painted, welds that may also have porosity in them. It is also equally effective for repairing any other welds from any other process, TIG or stick that needs to be cleaned up, and re-worked. In this case my brother-in-law Keven Berns is working with his best friend Jeff Wood, on Keven’s son Colton Berns #307 Amsoil Championship Off-road 1600 buggy. Colton started racing at the Crandon 50th annual race in 2019 so 2024 will be Colton’s sixth season in the seat of this 1600 buggy. He has come a long ways and finished fourth in points the 2023 season, his sponsorship has been growing steadily every year, which helps greatly as any racer will tell you, it takes money to race, and it is really helpful when it’s not all coming out of your families pocket.

Aluminum Weld Repair of Arctic Cat F7 Bulkhead
This project was brought to me for a crack repair on an aluminum bulkhead of an Arctic Cat F7 sled. You can see it the video that the crack started from the factory wire fed weld where they stopped welding and never filled in the puck mark, or asshole as welders call it. It was only cracked on the left side of the sled; I dug out the crack so I could get full penetration by welding from both sides. Most welding now is done with MIG, it is the way to lay down as much filler as possible in the shortest span of time, regardless of the material, but what may look terrific from the outside is not always so good on the inside. When you run over it with TIG the porosity and contaminants appear, and start to burn off. The key is that with TIG you are not continually adding filler material, so you can burn out those contaminants.

ShelterLogic tent to metal shed conversion
Originally I bought this ShelterLogic tent in 2018 to have more storage so I could rotate summer and winter toys to and from this tent and have extra space for my business in my big shed, then the fabric top tore in the winter of 2020. I talked with my brother-in-law Keven Berns as he had a pair of tents that were more like quonset huts (more rounded), his tent fabric lasted much longer, and eventually tore, he was the one who came up with the corrugated metal fix for his tent, so I just followed his lead. I found some used corrugated material on line where a tree had fallen on someone’s new pole shed, insurance bought him all new material, and I repurposed his old stuff. I got some #12 x 1-1/2” metal tek screws from my neighbor Tom Hauterbrook, and stated work on my new metal shed.

Setting Kohler K4402AS/K3402AS Timing
This video is how to set the timing on a Kohler K4402AS or K3402AS as installed in a Mercury Trail-Twister. I misspeak in the video the K4402AS timing is .095” BTDC, and the K3402AS is .080” BTDC. I also misspeak and call it 95 degrees which is easy to do most of the time talking about timing your talking in degrees of rotation, but here I am talking about .095” which is the reading BTDC of the piston (Before Top Dead Center). At the end of this video are three pages from my Mercury repair manual, the first is of this How to set the timing video, The second is how to check the timing with a timing light, and the third is the specifications for setting the timing and other information as well. Thank you to Mercury for providing this material. Click the links below to my Part 1, & Part 2 of stator replacement on the same engine.

Dirt Bike Steering Stabilizer Installation
I have a 2013 Suzuki RMZ 450 that I ride on the ice in winter, and wanted to install a steering stabilizer on it, there is no room to install an inline stabilizer without permanently removing body panels so I started looking at the Scotts stabilizer systems, they were around $600.00, but they didn’t even make a kit for a Suzuki. So I started searching farther, I seen that I could mount a stabilizer above the handlebars or below, if I mounted below I would need to raise the handlebars, then I would need a mount on the neck of the bike frame. I found a stabilizer on Amazon that looked exactly like the Scotts stabilizer only it was $140.00 compared to the Scotts stabilizer at $386.00. I then added it to my 2023 Christmas list, figuring if I couldn’t find the parts I could make them. My bike has a 71mm neck and Scotts used to sell them I found out they no longer do when I called them, so I gave up looking and decided to build it all myself from scratch. This video runs through the whole process, I also believe I figured out why Scotts no longer makes the neck clamp as the fuel tank bolt location is the perfect mounting area.

Replacing a Rusted Section of I-Beam
This is my latest welding project, the building was built in 1974, the owners used to wash their van in the area where the I-beam rusted out. I was hired to replace the lower section of the i-beam it has 4” flanges, and was 7-5/16” flange to flange; I replaced 12” in length plus the lower mounting plate which was 3/8” thick. The concrete anchors were ¾”, and the whole lower section was severely rusted. I started out by needle gunning the existing beam in the area to be replaced. I cleaned that up then I tried to chase the remaining portion of the concrete anchors above the nuts, which did not go very well but I figured the thread inside of the nuts being covered by the nuts would be structurally sound if I could get the old nuts off without ruining the threads. I was right after removing the old I-beam I chased the anchors again and they were good. The job of replacing the I-beam took me 3 hours, not including making the I-beam from scratch. It took me 2.5 hours to cut the 3/16” plate for the I-beam, fit it up, & weld it, and also to cut, and drill the base plate.

Aluminum Welding with DCEP
I had a request for this video of aluminum welding with Direct Current Electrode Positive or DCEP by a subscriber named Immigrant Freedom. I have never tried this before, and maybe it is just me or my machine, but I could not hold a consistent arc unless I had the high frequency arc start on, and using my thumb control. With the use of both of those it welded ok, but was still a very hot arc which made the use of a large tungsten electrode, 1/8” or 5/32” a necessity, and because your welding at the electrical companies 60 hertz input and output the tungsten will ball, this makes welding thinner materials more difficult as it is much harder to direct the arc with a balled tungsten compared with a sharp tungsten, square wave and 200 hertz output. Also all the excess heat is rough on ceramic cups, I ruined a couple making this video. All in all this does work, but if you already need to have the thumb control and high frequency arc starting, why not get an AC/DC machine. Now that I know it works I will stick to my AC high frequency arc starting square wave technology Miller Dynasty 200. Sorry Immigration Freedom I am pretty sure this was not what you wanted to hear, but I’m always going give it my best shot and my opinion, good luck!

Cast Aluminum Repair
This is the repair of a Volvo Penta Helmut from a boat outdrive unit, this part covers the universals that drive the lower unit from the engine. It is made of cast aluminum and one of the ears was broken off, I cleaned it up and beveled both sides for a full penetration weld, found a section of ¼” x 2” flat stock (forged) which was also cleaned and beveled both sides. I clamped it to a piece of angle to keep all parts straight and square. I then welded the flat stock to the helmut one side at a time. I ground the welds smooth, mocked up a template from the unbroken side so I would get the threaded hole in the correct location. I cut the new ear to match the existing ear. I had to build up the thickness of the new ear close to 5/16” on the back side. With my template and using a centering punch I marked the hole, and used the proper size drill bit for the tap, and completed the piece.

Clean Algae & Fungus from Roof Shingles
Clean your roof shingles with laundry bleach to kill mold, mildew, algae, moss, fungus and other general unsightly objects from view without special tools. Fungus and algae will grow under your shingles and loosen them making them susceptible to wind blowing them off and you will need to prematurely replace your roof. Walk on the roof as little as possible and do not use a scrub brush on your roof or you will knock off a great deal of the gravel on the shingles and lose the lifespan of your roof. Custom Made Stainless Steel Handrails
This is one of the first videos I made and it was in the year 2015 when I first started my YouTube channel, I was hacked in 2020, my Ricky Hembel outdoor channel was deleted, and two bit coin videos uploadeded. At that point YouTube locked me out of my account, my HRI Services channel still exists but I have no access to my own videos, or to answer viewer’s questions. I no longer make stainless handrails as it’s time consuming hard work, and most who want them are the elite who are picky, & expect everything for nothing, and don’t appreciate anything, I won’t work for them! If you have questions or would like me to make a specific video let me know in the comments. Please like, subscribe, share and comment as that will increase my views. Horseshoe Wine Bottle /Glass Holder
Watch in a picture video as I build a horseshoe wine bottle/glass holder that you will be able to stick in the ground at your favorite area, adjust the height to fit your needs, sit in your favorite chair, drink your favorite wine, from your favorite wine glass. I will tell you what you will need, give you the measurements, and explain how to do it.
Most wine bottles are 3-1/2” in diameter, the widest point of a #1 horseshoe is also that dimension. You will need two #1 horseshoes, four #00 horseshoes, two ¼” x ¾” x 1-5/8” flat bar, one 1/4” x ¾” x 3-1/2” flat bar, and one ½” x 30” steel round stock to build this project.
Here are some jigs I made to speed up the process and make the finished product more consistent. You will see them in use as we go along.
I use this half horseshoe as a pattern for the angle to cut the #1 horseshoes at.
I use this jig to mark the lines on the table at 3-1/2” they need to be parallel and square.
Lay the ¼” x ¾” x 3-5/8” flat between hold square and straight with some vise-grips and weld, do the same for the opposite side.
Lay out one of the other half horseshoes with one of the ¼” x 1-5/8” flat and square with the lines, clamp down and weld. Repeat for opposite side.
If you are looking for an antique look with clear lacquer, then at this time you should run a grinder with a 60 grit flap disk randomly on all parts.
Fit the parts in the jig, and holding all parts tight to the jig and square tack the two smaller sections in place, and weld.
I install the rod in the center of the jig, set the jig on a vise, clamp the rod in the vise at the right height, center the horseshoes and tack the rod in place.
Then gently remove the project from the jig, place in a vise and weld complete, quartering it. (Weld one side then the other, welding one quarter at a time).
Lay the four #00 horseshoes upside down on the bench, and set the project down on top of them. Use a square to make each of the glass holders square to each other. Eyeball to make sure all looks good and tack all in place; you will need the vise-grips for this again to hold all square and keep it from pulling, repeat all the way around.
That is the completed project, now it just needs paint or in this case I went with the antique look and clear lacquer. Hope you enjoyed the project, please like and subscribe. Here it is with clear lacquer the bottom section is just a display stand. This wine bottle glass holder can also double as a Baltimore Oriole feeder install four glasses, the cut two oranges in half and ½ in each glass they will flock to it in the spring, & summer.
This can all be done without the jig. Below is the address if you want to build the jig: https://rumble.com/v3vqt6y-build-a-jig-for-the-wine-bottle-glass-holder.html

Evolution S355MCS Miter Chop Saw Review
I’ve been waiting for years for someone to come out with a carbide tooth miter saw for metal.
About two years ago when I first seen it I wanted one and knew it would be a useful tool.
Well this summer 2023, a job came up where the saw would pay for itself, I bought one two weeks ago.
At the end of the video you will see a photo collage of the job.
I really like this saw a lot, although unlike what most state there is some transfer of heat to the piece being cut, obviously there is still friction causing heat, but nothing compared to a carborundum abrasive blade.
The angles are so precise as you will see in the pictures, that it’s just like putting together a puzzle, set your welding machine once as all of your joints will be the same, and tight.
The fence is about 3-3/8” high so it’s easy if you require multiple duplicate pieces to use your first one as a guide to measure and cut the rest.
The clamps are awesome they hold pieces very securely in place for the cut.
This saw is very messy so you will want a roller magnet to pick up the shavings, out of luck for aluminum.
My saw was almost $1200.00 including a spare blade and an aluminum cutting blade, and I have already used it for a second job!
The job I bought the saw with was to build six steel sawhorses for a waste water treatment plant, they are cradles to hold the drain hoses for the sanitation tanker trucks to dump at the treatment plant. The cradle hold the hoses up at the height of the connection on the back of the trucks.

GroundBreaker Installation tips
GroundBreaker is a foundation covering that comes in a 50’ long roll and can be purchased in various heights, mine and most are 24” high. The product is called FRP which stands for fiberglass reinforced plastic, with the addition of fiberglass it makes the plastic tougher, but it also makes it more susceptible to fractures. In this video I cover some experiences I ran into during my installation, I would say this is a medium task, not too hard, it sure made a quick diferance in the looks of my house though! I am very happy with the results and have had some 85 degree weather already this year and the waves have not gotten any worse so the fiberglass/plastic mix seems to not expand so much. Hope this video helps you. I will put links to the products below.

Cast Iron Weld Repair low hydrogen 7018 stick rod
This video is on the repair of a section of Cast Iron with low hydrogen 7018 stick rod or SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process. There will be clean up as the piece to be repaired had be done before with braze rod so I had to remove all of that first, then bevel the sections to be welded, preheat, tack it up, weld it out, post heat, put in fiberglass insulation for 24 hours for slow cooling, clean off the residue from fiberglass, complete final clean up of the piece, including putting a radius on all the edges, (sharp corners and edges is where cracking begins), and finally clean out the holes with a carbide burr so the 5/8” rod fits through the holes. Old Paint Removal Using Heat
Remove old hardened paint from any surface using a torch. Use the information in this video at your own risk. Using a Propane or Mapp gas torch and a scraper for removing old paint is very fast and easy, but there are certain risks involved. Never get the paint too hot, lead based paints melt at 1630 °F which will emit fumes harmful to your health, keep the temperature of the paint as low as possible. Remove all combustibles from the surrounding area, have a fire extinguisher handy, vacuum up all debris in the area like leaves etc. do not do this right before you have to leave the area to go somewhere, I suggest you be in the area for a couple hours afterwards just in case you get something a little too hot and create embers. If you use a vacuum cleaner as I do to vacuum up the scraped off paint, you could vacuum up some embers, so put the vacuum somewhere that it will not start a fire. Always scrape away from your body. Sorry the video wasn’t better, but I think you get the idea! Please use common sense, and most of all be careful. Westward Welding Hood 44R236 Unboxing and Review
I will unbox and review the Westward welding hood 44R236 , you will get to see the graphics, all of the adjustments, including face to shield adjustment, the different modes, Grind, cut, and weld, all of the mode settings like shade, sensitivity, and delay. I will test the hood out in my work shop, and at the end of the video will be a copy of the owner’s manual in case didn’t cover something you were looking for. This original review video was made in 2016, I had purchased two helmets at that time, and as of 4/4/23 I still have both and other than replacing the clear lens and batteries, I have not had to replace anything else, nor have I had any negative issues with either hood. Currently you can find these hoods ranging from $108.00 to $280.00. Thanks for watching. I use a pre/post heat on all of my cast iron repairs, this rod I’m using is a cast rod with no flux coating, when the rod is hot you dip it in a dry cast iron flux, the process is a torch oxygen/acetylene process. I put the parts put back together and held in place with a couple vise grips, tack it up, complete the weld process both inside and out, clean up the outside without gouging the base metal, decrease in grit with different tools until you have a finished product with about the same look/texture as the original metal. If you are very picky you can sand blast the finish to give it a more like cast finish.
