Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Tuesday, November 7th 2023 – St. Didacus of Alcalá 1. **Birth and Early Life (c. 1400):** Didacus of Alcalá was born in San Nicolás del Puerto, Kingdom of Seville, into a poor but devout family. As a child, he embraced the hermit life and later became a wandering hermit under the guidance of a hermit priest. 2. **Entry into Religious Life:** Didacus joined the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) and became a lay brother. He worked at various manual trades to support the brotherhood. 3. **Missionary Work in Spain:** Didacus preached in villages surrounding Córdoba, Cádiz, and Seville, displaying a strong devotion. He was highly regarded in these regions for his piety and zeal. 4. **Missionary Work in the Canary Islands (1445-1449):** Didacus was sent to the island of Lanzarote, part of the newly conquered Canary Islands. Later, he was appointed as Guardian of the Franciscan community on the island of Fuerteventura. His defense of the indigenous people against colonizers led to his return to Spain in 1449. 5. **Service During the Jubilee Year (1450):** Didacus went to Rome during the Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Nicholas V. It presents the suffering souls in Purgatory and the misery of death, emphasizing the separation of body and soul. 3. **Meditation on Death:** Reflecting on death helps individuals understand life's true dimensions. People often assume they have time to prepare for death, but sudden and unpredictable events can end life abruptly. 4. **Uncertainty of Life:** The uncertainty of life's duration should lead to detachment from earthly things. He also suffered the loss of his wife, three children, and his mother. 3. **Spiritual Awakening:** In the face of these failures and personal tragedies, Alfonso experienced a profound spiritual awakening. He recognized the wickedness of his life and saw the majesty of God in his own misery. 4. **Entrance into the Society of Jesus:** At the age of 40, Alfonso entered the Society of Jesus as a lay brother. After a six-month novitiate, he became the doorkeeper at the Jesuit College of Mount Zion on the Island of Palma de Majorca. 5. **Humble Service:** Alfonso served as the doorkeeper for 45 years. Despite his humble position, his saintly behavior and wisdom attracted numerous people seeking his spiritual advice. 6. **Gift for Spiritual Conversation:** He possessed a special gift for spiritual conversation, and his superior affirmed that no spiritual treatise produced as much spiritual good as contact with him. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Friday, October 27th, 2023 – King St. Kaleb 1. **6th Century Ethiopia:** Ethiopia was ruled by King St. Kaleb or Elesbaan, who was raised in the Catholic Faith from childhood and ruled his country wisely and justly. 2. **Persecution by King Dunaan:** Across the Red Sea, Arabia was ruled by King Dunaan, who apostatized from the Catholic Faith and persecuted the Bishops, clergy, and Catholics, destroying churches and killing thousands without trial. 3. **Request for Assistance:** Emperor Justinian I of the Eastern Roman Empire called on King Elesbaan to punish Dunaan and end the persecution. 4. **Crusade Against Dunaan:** King Elesbaan gathered his army, crossed the Red Sea, defeated Dunaan, executed him, restored the Bishop to his diocese, and rebuilt the churches in Arabia. 5. **Return to Ethiopia:** After accomplishing his mission, King Elesbaan returned to Ethiopia and continued to rule wisely, instructing his son in the Catholic Faith and governance. 6. **Renunciation of Kingship:** King Elesbaan later renounced his title and became a hermit, retiring to a monastery in the mountains. 7. **Life as a Hermit:** Disguised as a hermit, he lived a life dedicated to prayer, obedience, and work in solitude. 8. **Death:** He died with a reputation of sanctity on October 27, 532, and is often depicted as a solitary hermit holding a cross with a crown at his feet. He was sent to evangelize the East Saxons in England. 2. **Conversion of King Sigeberht:** King Sigeberht the Good decided to become Catholic and reconvert his Kingdom. St. Cedd baptized him. 3. **Excommunicated Count:** St. Cedd excommunicated a Count who was in an unlawful and scandalous marriage and forbade the faithful from entering the Count's house and dining with him. 4. **Disobedience of the King:** King Sigeberht continued to visit the Count's house, despite St. Cedd's order. One day, after attending a lavish dinner at the Count's castle, he encountered St. Cedd. 5. **Meeting Between King and Saint:** The King and St. Cedd, both on horseback, dismounted to greet each other.
