Episode Run Time: 1:11:36
Our guest is Johann Hari, writer, journalist, and author of “Chasing the Scream”, “Lost Connections”, and his most recent one entitled “Stolen Focus”. We talk about our waning attention spans and how this is affecting our children, how his trip to Provence Town changed (or didn’t change) his life, and how Google is stealing our attention.

01:09:12 Where to Find Johann
“Your attention didn’t collapse. It was stolen.”
Johann tells the story of his godson Adam who, once was a curious, precocious child obsessed with Elvis Presley, now has become glued to his phone, and won’t stop checking Snapchat. There is an ongoing crisis right now with children with short attention spans, are not independent, and are being locked away at home in fear of their safety or of kidnappings which in turn stunts their social skills and ability to think on their own, even before the pandemic started. This led to Johann advocating for Lenore Skenazy’s LetGrow.org non-profit where she promotes “free-range kids” who can do things on their own, like take the subway alone. According to psychologist Steven Pinker who wrote a book called “Better Angels”, violence has declined over the past few decades which Johann agrees with in helping create more independent children.
Burnout and Our Collective Responsibility Against Social Media
We’ve been getting our sense of fulfillment externally on social media, which harms our ability to focus. Johann went to MIT to interview Professor Earl K. Miller who explains that the human brain can only consciously think about one or two things at the same time. We’ve fallen into a collective delusion where we can do more one thing at once leading to a culture of overworking and burnout, also called the switch-cost effect. Hewlett-Packard did an experiment between two working groups in the company and saw that the group that had been uninterrupted by calls and e-mails scored 10 IQ points higher. In France, a phenomenon called “Le Burnout” let to the government implementing a legal right to disconnect. Tristan Harris of Google was shocked by the addicting effects they built within Gmail and together with Aza Raskin formed Center for Humane Technology. Just like the moms who banned lead in paint, we can collectively fight against the ongoing phenomenon of our losing focus by not banning Google and Facebook, but by having an individual and collective responsibility to find the root of the problem and challenge these ideas and concepts of the way we work in our hyper productive world.

The Current State of Marriage Psychology and Therapy
If you’re married and going through a rough patch in your marriage, chances are, you’ve considered marriage therapy at some point in time. It may be because you genuinely want your relationship to work, or you’re not the type that gives up too quickly. But the question is, does marriage counseling work?
Yes, counseling helps couples identify and resolve conflicts that may be contributing to the problems in their relationship. However, Geoffrey believes that the marriage counseling of today is sadly built on a foundation of victimization. One or both partners have to be the source of most relationship issues before a solution can be found. He goes on to explain that some couples argue a lot because one partner is just being petty. Others are just hungry, while a vast majority would fix their marital issues by simply exercising a lot more. Unfortunately, most marriage therapists don’t go as far as checking a couple’s diet or exercise routine before prescribing a solution, and that’s a problem. If marriage counselors could dig a little deeper to understand the root cause of a couple’s disputes, that would immensely help couples strengthen their relationship and build a solid foundation for their future together.
The Right Way to Negotiate With Your Partner
Marriage is built on negotiations-- one partner takes out the trash while the other takes the kids to school. Unfortunately, the longer people stay together, the more likely they are to compromise, yet always compromising rarely gets anybody what they want. According to Geoffrey, successful marriages are built on successful negotiations. On any given day, there are numerous marriage matters that need to be discussed and deliberated. Understanding how to negotiate properly makes marriage life easier.
He goes on to add that negotiations should be taken a step further and implemented in the bedroom. The more you deliberate on what you want as a couple in the bedroom, the more fun your sex life will be.
Understanding Healthy and Unhealthy Jealousy in Marriage
Jealousy is the reaction to a real or imagined threat to a valued relationship. It’s a normal human emotion that everyone experiences and forms a vital part of our primal evolution. The good news is that a little jealousy can be positive and reassuring in a relationship. However, problems can arise when jealousy turns from a healthy human emotion to an irrational one. For example, if your partner is constantly stalking you or becomes violent when you interact with people of the opposite sex, that’s a red flag you should never ignore.
Geoffrey explains that mild and occasional feelings of jealousy in marriage reminds couples not to take each other for granted. Jealousy also motivates partners to appreciate one another, heightening emotions, making sex more passionate and love even stronger.
Toxic jealousy is not an emotion that can be banished by wishful thinking. It runs right to an individual's core, and takes awareness and effort to overcome these feelings.

Sex & Porn Addiction
There’s no doubt that some people are more addicted to sex and porn than others, but the question as a clinician is to ask: “How do I treat this?”. One model could be addiction and some of the things that are required to call some things as an addiction would be developing tolerance around the stimulus or behavior, Curie activity, having negative consequences as a result of the behavior. Each of these will be undergone and have disproven some aspects of them in science, called falsification. An addiction has to fulfill all criteria otherwise it’s not an addiction. Having shame because of conservative upbringings, having a high sex drive and not being able to complete everyday tasks and relationships, leading up to impulsive and compulsive disorders are not the same as addiction. In the field of science, no scientist has labelled porn as addictive and most of this stigma is around public perception.
Women Who Watch Porn
Women are the biggest spenders in OnlyFans and women who watch porn are seen to have positive effects such as improved sexual satisfaction, increased orgasm consistency, and higher relationship satisfaction. The big gender difference is that in sex clinics, the most common problem women report is low desire which has been going on for 40 years and watching pornography could be one of the ways to spark drive.
Sex Research on Trauma Healing and Sexual Reframing
PTSD is affective dampening, which is when a person shuts their emotions off because of the fear that their traumatic experience will happen again. Through orgasm meditation, the idea is if there’s a way to get victims to have intense emotional experiences that are safe where they can start to experience feelings of intensity again in a way that isn’t frightening so they can do exposures. This allows them to feel high intensity but a positive, pleasurable thing which can make their affective range broaden out again. CPT is one of the most common form of therapies for PTSD victims. Dr.

2022 Forecast
In terms of Numerology, it’s a Six Year and a Nine Cycle for the planet and a Six Year vibration can act in different ways depending on the other numbers that are on top of it whether it’s on a person’s or a planet’s chart. For reference, the last Six Year was 2013 and when Andrew tries to figure out what the next year’s going to be for the planet, he looks back at other years with the same vibration. What he saw in 2013 was a lot of seeds. It wasn’t a difficult year for the planet, there wasn’t a lot of conflict or major chaotic global events. What he did see was that a lot of the storylines that later became big for the planet, the seeds were already planted in 2013 such as Bitcoin, geopolitics, and pop culture.
Do We Make Mistakes?
Based on his intuition, when we end up on a certain path in life after making a less ideal decision, there are serendipities and things that fall into place perfectly to the point that maybe it was meant to happen. When a person has free will, the universe will always organize around you. No matter what you do, the order will always be there because there is feedback and a need to go through a certain experience because of the choice a person makes. In Numerology, there is a theme for the year and if you think about your life according to that theme, the universe will organize around the choice you make but still give that theme back. The order will always be present because a person can’t escape that bubble of perfection where you will be given what you need to evolve regardless of what choice you make.
Are Babies Born with Debts to Pay?
Without invalidating the pain that humans go through, Andrew would never dare negate those experiences, but there is a possibility that the pain humans go through is not measured in the same ways from the spiritual perspective. He compares it to walking out after a rollercoaster ride or a horror movie. When you’re back in the spiritual plane, it’s easier to understand pain in a way that humans can’t. It’s not so much that horrible things happen in the world but maybe there’s something that we don’t understand in the spiritual side of things that humans are not going to be able to explain right away. Secondly, difficult experiences are not earned, but there’s a chance that we just don’t immediately understand the purpose of these experiences from the actual perspective of the explanation that makes sense. One on hand, there’s a purpose to everything but on the other, it’s best to edit yourself out of the situation and be as empathetic and understanding when communicating that to others.
